To be or not to be, Ernst Lubitsch. Un classique dans l'histoire
To Be Or Not To Be a suscité une abondante littérature critique au cours de ces trente dernières années, et la récente mise au programme du film au baccalauréat a accru encore cette production. Mais le film d'Ernst Lubitsch est une matière inépuisable, surtout lorsqu'on l'approche avec un faisceau de méthodes capables de révéler ce qui était jusqu'ici resté dans l'ombre. Le lecteur amateur ou spécialiste, l'enseignant et l'étudiant de cinéma trouveront dans ce livre non seulement tout ce qu'on attend d'une étude du film en termes d'histoire, d'esthétique, de style, de contenu, mais ils trouveront bien davantage, grâce à des spécialistes d'histoire, d'histoire culturelle, de sociologie, de génétique, de philosophie, d'études germaniques. Tous analysent le film avec la précision critique qu'on devrait toujours attendre de la passion cinéphilique. Le sociologue Jean-Marc Leveratto nous révèle ainsi la version radiophonique du film, grâce à laquelle Lubitsch entrait dans le quotidien du grand public américain de l'époque. Jean-Pierre Esquénazi examine tout ce qui inscrit To Be Or Not Be dans la descendance du Dictateur, mais aussi tout ce qui l'en sépare ; Clélia Zernik passe pour sa part le film au filtre du thème de la répétition envisagée comme un motif philosophique. Le film a souvent été étudié sous l'angle de la théâtralité, mais l'influence du célèbre couple de théâtre formé par Alfred Lunt et Lynn Fontanne n'avait jamais jusqu'ici été étudié de façon aussi détaillée que le fait Marguerite Chabrol, comme une matrice possible du couple formé par Joseph et Maria Tura. Le riche point de vue de François Genton et Matthias Steinle permet d'approcher le versant germanique du film, parfois sacrifié à sa dimension de comédie "américaine". La question de l'engagement des Etats-Unis dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale est de nouveau mise sur le métier : Katalin Por examine en détail le contexte d'écriture et de production du film, Alain Kleinberger brosse un panorama des comédies qui constituent le cadre culturel, générique et cinématographique du film de Lubitsch, Jacqueline Nacache se demande si Lubitsch avait pour but d'expliquer le nazisme ou d'en exposer l'incompréhensible nature. Enfin, le film étant proposé à l'analyse des lycéens, Barbara Laborde examine le film à la lumière de la nouvelle épreuve du baccalauréat et en déploie les ressources esthétiques et théoriques que permet la confrontation des photogrammes. Au terme de cette lecture, on n'aura certes pas fini de découvrir tous les sens, exposés ou voilés, de ce film exceptionnel. Mais To Be Or Not To Be apparaîtra sous un nouveau jour à tous ceux qui l'aiment et l'admirent depuis longtemps, et ne manquera pas d'émerveiller ceux qui le découvrent et l'analysent pour la première fois.

Chef d'oeuvre d'Ernst Lubitsch, To be or not to be est une démonstration de virtuosité technique, un sommet de la production hollywoodienne de l'âge d'or. Au-delà des stars qu'il mobilise, il représente l'aboutissement d'un savoir-faire collectif : l'imagination de Melchior Lengyel, la photographie de Rudolf Maté, la musique de Werner Heyman, le métier et les accents de Félix Bressart et de Sig Ruman, les seconds rôles fétiches de Lubitsch, contribuent à la construction de sa qualité artistique singulière. Mais To be or not to be est aussi bien plus que cela. Il donne une leçon d'humanité, fondée sur le plaisir de jouer avec la réalité qu'offrent le théâtre et le cinéma. Child and Nation. A Study of Political Socialisation and Banal Nationalism in France and England
Where do feelings of national belonging come from ? Why is it that this belonging often seems both fundamental and banal, both intangible and omnipresent ? This book argues that the answers to these questions lie in childhood and the socialisation to the nation that we experience as children. It suggests that the banality of our own everyday nationalism is due to the fact that we have spent our lives learning to take it for granted. Just as our first understandings of reality are learned during childhood socialisation, so nationhood and national belonging are internalised as natural and necessary from the very beginning of our lives. The specific nature of this early socialisation is what confers upon banal nationalism its characteristic combination of omnipresence, inscrutability and self-evidence. To try and get around this self-evidence and explore this socialisation and its results, this study has adopted an innovative methodology involving semi-directive projective interviews with young children in France and England. This book presents an analysis of how this early socialisation to the nation plays out on young children's visions of national belonging and its justifications and implications. It also looks at what this transmission in childhood means for nationalism as an ideology and the power and pertinence of the nation today.

From the village to presidential suite, my life journey
I did not intend to write a scholarly book, for I did not want to intellectualize my life. Nor did I wish to romanticize it. I wanted to describe it as I lived it, with emphasis on people. I wanted to express in this book the joy I experienced in giving generously of myself, my time, and my modest material possessions, to make others happy and to share the many gifts of life. I wanted also to share with those who aspire to become academic leaders the myriad lessons my upbringing, education, and professional life have taught me. I thought they might find these lessons learned useful, as they strive for successful careers and, more importantly, for rewarding personal and professional lives. Again, this book is a story, the story of my life, wherein the personal and the professional have intermingled and strengthened each other, making a better whole of my person, personality, aspirations, and talents. This unique alliance between the professional and the personal dimensions of my life, I am happy to say, always triumphed and accounted for the successes that so many good people helped me achieve. Without the guidance, advice, cooperation, and support of others, I am sure my life would not have been as fulfilling.

"The autobiographical impulse" dominated German-language literature of the 1970's, finding its expression in autobiographies of crisis, women's coming-to-consciousness, and disrupted childhoods. This study examines the historical, sociological, political and literary-historical context for this phenomenon, and in so doing engages the critical international discussion of autobiography as a changing genre. Detailed analyses of works by Ingeborg Bachmann, Elisabeth Plessen, Christa Wolf and Peter Handke suggest new critical approaches to autobiographical form. Fra Francesc Moner’s Bilingual Poetics of Love and Reason
Fra Francesc Moner (1462/3-1491/2) is a Catalan author, who flourished in Barcelona during the second decade subsequent to the marriage of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile in 1469. Moner's extant production amounts to seventy-four pieces, a collection of poems and prose works of various genres, written in Catalan and in Castilian. A comprehensive study that profiles the creativity of a whole career is a rare occurrence for a Hispanic author like Moner, whose lifetime straddles the boundaries between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This book highlights the two main aspects of Fra Francesc's contribution : first, the resourceful bilingualism stemming from Moner's mastery of not only his native Catalan but also Castilian, the language that in the late 1400s kept gaining the ascendancy and prestige of officialdom throughout the Spanish realm ; second, the fashioning of an iconic text of subjectivity in the wake of the landmark innovations brought about by Ausiàs March, the Valencian luminary of the first half of the fifteenth century. Elena Kats-Chernin wrote Afterwards for the 18th birthday of a young acquaintance, Guy Knopke, who had just started playing the bassoon. The title refers to "the new adventures and changes that can lie ahead after a significant milestone", according to the composer. She created a solo [also duo] piano version for herself, which is published in the anthology Piano Village (BB 3409). The final version of the original for bassoon and piano, which is no longer quite suitable for beginners, was recorded on CD by Elena Kats-Chernin together with the soloist Lorelei Dowling on Chromart Classics in 2017. The Gay Agenda
The "gay agenda" is a rhetorical strategy deployed by the religious right and other social conservatives to magnify fear and hostility of queers. Queers are accused, among other things, of strategizing to recruit children into sexually deviant lifestyles ; dismantling family and marriage as cornerstones of civilization ; and forcing the entertainment industry and court systems to do their bidding. Queers certainly do have an agenda but it is not the one that the religious right claims it is. It is to assert their presence in the public space ; claim and name their identities ; and strategize for social justice in law, schools, and workplaces. The Gay Agenda : Claiming Space, Identity, and Justice claims and reclaims the language of "agenda" and turns the rhetoric of the religious right on its ear.
