On Deixis in English and Polish
Deixis verges on the borderline of philosophy, semantics and pragmatics. Since no satisfactory theory of deixis has been proposed so far, this book gives a critical examination of the state of the art and suggests a solution within the framework of discourse analysis. The deictic systems of English and Polish are compared in termes of algorithms, which determine the distribution of demonstrative pronouns in the two languages. Many difficulties found in other approaches can be escaped through the application of algorithms accounting for the speaker's choices in his use of demonstratives during the discourse flow.

Untold Tales of Spider-Man. L'intégrale 1996-1997
Cela ne fait pas longtemps que Peter Parker a été mordu par une araignée radioactive, qui lui a donné les pouvoirs de Spider-Man. S'il essaie de suivre les précieux conseils de son défunt Oncle Ben sur la responsabilité d'un super-héros, Peter a bien du mal à concilier ses études, son travail de photographe au Daily Bugle et ses affrontements avec les pires vilains, comme Electro et le Lézard ! Dans la deuxième moitié des années 90, Kurt Busiek (Marvels, Avengers Forever) a eu la bonne idée de revenir aux premières années de Spider-Man, avec une approche moderne qui reste cependant respectueuse du style des épisodes d'origine. La série n'avait à l'époque pas été publiée en intégralité, les épisodes inédits sont donc dans cet album. Le prochain tome est prévu pour la deuxième moitié 2024 !

Arts du Nigéria Central revisités. Mumuye et peuples environnants
In previous studies, Jan Strybol pointed out that sculpture in Northern Nigeria - contrary to what is generally assumed - flourished. Wood sculptures could be found just about everywhere, with the exception of a part of the Far North. In this study, the author first examines the sculptural traditions of a number of peoples in Central Nigeria, in particular from the Jos Plateau and from the valley of the Middle Benue to the source area of the Taraba River. These peoples can be described as non-centralized communities where mainly art in perishable materials was produced by part-time specialists, in contrast to the centralized empires in the South (Ife, Benin) where full-time specialists created complex works of art in durable materials (stone, bronze, iron). Perhaps the most well-known ethnic group in the Middle Benue region among aficionados of African art are the Mumuye. Since the end of the last century, the traditional rites of the Mumuye have rapidly disappeared as a result of the advance of the world religions and with them the Mumuye sculpture so much admired in Europe and America. In addition to wood sculpture, Jan Strybol also pays attention to objects in bronze, iron, terracotta and other materials. Until now, these art forms have been very underexposed and have now almost completely disappeared. Finally, the author also elaborates on some artistic achievements of a number of little-known residual groups within the Mumuye territory, which can boast a rich art tradition.

Polygyny in Pre-christian Bafut and New Moral Theological Perspectives
Polygyny, commonly called polygamy, has been one of the main obstacles to evangelisation in Africa. After Vatican II many theologians began to question the traditional church policy towards polygamists and their wives who, after receiving the faith, asked for baptism. The two main solutions proposed were the baptism and the life catechumenate solutions. The present work studies polygyny in pre-christian Bafut and traces the history of the problem of polygynous converts from 1201. It suggests that the real obstacle to their baptism is polysex, not poly-marriage. In the concluding chapter, a solution is offered to polysex, according to which the polygamist, after baptism, becomes a special kind of monogamist.

Nicolas de Staël du Trait à la couleur
Dans ce livre, Anne de Staël, fille aînée du peintre, rassemble ses souvenirs d'enfant augmentés d'une réflexion originale sur le rapport du dessin au tableau. Les moments de vie évoqués étaient toujours mêlés à l'urgence et à l'intensité de l'expression picturale. Il ne s'agit donc pas ici d'une analyse d'historienne de l'art, mais du regard d'une enfant qui a grandi auprès de cette peinture et qui, devenue adulte, a cherché à dénouer le mystère de la création dont elle a été en partie témoin. Jusqu'ici, le lien entre le trait du dessin - encre de Chine, fusain, mine de plomb - et la densité de la couleur n'avait jamais été aussi clairement établi. Dans une langue toujours poétique, l'auteur a voulu montrer comment le travail du dessin dans l'oeuvre de Nicolas de Staël sous-tend la couleur. Le peintre est en effet l'un des plus grands coloristes de la peinture du XXe siècle, et nous découvrons ici l'importance de son travail de dessinateur. L'entrelacement des noirs et des blancs a aussi permis d'exalter la lumière au coeur du pigment. Devant un tableau, Anne de Staël fait surgir ses souvenirs, conséquence de l'émotion esthétique reçue. L'ouvrage est richement illustré, et la fille de l'artiste nous livre un texte à la fois poétique et personnel enrichi de lettres et d'écrits du peintre, nous permettant de redécouvrir l'ensemble de l'oeuvre de Nicolas de Staël.

Nicolas de Staël. Enfant de l'étoile polaire
"Je t'embrasse de tout coeur, toi, Paris, toute la ville et ton pays tout entier. Je vous aime plus profondément, plus désespérément que je ne vous ai jamais aimés" écrivait Nicolas de Staël à son grand ami René Char en 1953, un an avant de se jeter dans le vide. Né à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1914, Nicolas de Staël von Holstein a cinq ans lorsque sa famille fuit la Russie pour se réfugier en Pologne. Après la mort de leurs parents, Nicolas et ses soeurs sont accueillis par des amis en Belgique. Après des études aux Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, il voyage en Espagne, au Maroc, en Italie où il se nourrit du spectacle de la nature, de la lumière et de leurs contrastes. En 1943, il s'installe définitivement en France et se lance dans l'aventure de l'abstraction avec l'intuition que "sa vie [sera] un continuel voyage sur une mer incertaine". Pinceau des mots à la main, au plus près de son sujet, Karin Müller raconte à la première personne le destin fulgurant de ce peintre intransigeant et généreux, ami des surréalistes, de Kandinsky, Braque, Lanskoy, Magnelli, Sonia Delaunay et bien d'autres, que le succès et la reconnaissance tardive n'empêcheront pas de mettre fin à ses jours à l'âge de 41 ans. Un texte magistral à la hauteur du génie de Nicolas de Staël. Le peintre foudroyé laisse plus de mille tableaux peints dans l'urgence des malheurs, privations, souffrances et bonheurs traversés.

Cette formule que Nicolas de Staël couche sur le papier dans une lettre de janvier 1955, deux mois avant de se donner la mort à Antibes, synthétise le principe qui a gouverné sa trajectoire. Guidé par un puissant instinct et une vive aspiration spirituelle, il a su transformer les coups de l'adversité en ressort de créativité. Des ciels gris-bleu de Saint-Pétersbourg à la perspective azur de la Méditerranée, Staël a cheminé en solitaire, à la fois ombrageux et solaire, entouré et seul, orgueilleux et compassionnel, avant de s'éteindre comme une comète folle au terme d'un parcours aussi lumineux que tragique.

Nicolas de Staël est un peintre français d'origine russe. Sa carrière s'étale sur 15 ans, de 1940 à sa mort en 1955. Il a peint durant ces années plus d'un millier de tableaux. Sa peinture est en constante évolution. Sombre à ses début, elle aboutit à l'exaltation de la couleur. Ses toiles se caractérisent par d'épaisses couches superposées et un important jeu de matières à une peinture plus fluide. Par son style évolutif, qu'il a lui-même qualifié d'" évolution continue ", il appartient aussi bien à l'Ecole de Paris, qu'aux abstrait ou à l'art informel. The Phenomenology of Freedom in Kleist's Die Familie Schroffenstein</I> and "Penthesilea</I>"
This study describes from an ontological perspective the foundation of freedom in two of Kleist's dramas. The novelty of this approach lies in the author's departure from the ontic considerations of freedom characterizing traditional Kleist scholarship. The present study advocates a de-construction of Kleist's concept of freedom back to its ontological basis : freedom is a cooperative enterprise of man and his situation. It is the author's contention that freedom in Kleist's works, rather than being defined by "a priori" categories, ensues primarily from the situation wherein it is being enacted. Man's relation to this situation is explored in a universal (Schroffenstein) and particular (Penthesilea) environment.

La porte de Tibère à Médamoud. Tome 1, Le décor
Bien que contemporaine de l'enceinte datant d'Auguste, la "Porte de Tibère" , ainsi nommée par des inscriptions comportant le nom de l'empereur, constitue un monument-clé de la théologie thébaine pour les époques hellénistique et romaine. Il s'agit du premier volume d'une série consacrée au temple de Médamoud. Un propylône introduit, dès le début du premier millénaire de notre ère, le complexe religieux de Médamoud, sur lequel s'appuie une enceinte datée d'Auguste par une stèle commémorative. Quoique l'édification de la porte ait été sans doute contemporaine de celle de l'enceinte et que le décor des embrasures ait été commencé sous ce règne, le monument est connu sous le nom de " Porte de Tibère ", les scènes et inscriptions de la façade et du revers, ainsi que trois scènes de l'embrasure nord-est, comportant les noms de cet empereur. L'écroulement de la porte, dans le courant de la deuxième moitié du XVIIIe siècle, a fait disparaître une part importante du décor avant le dégagement de l'éboulis par F. Bisson de la Roque en 1926. Un nombre conséquent de blocs, heureusement photographiés par Cl. Robichon en 1936, a encore disparu avant la fin du XXe siècle. En dépit de ces pertes regrettables, les scènes et inscriptions conservées, presque entièrement inédites, représentent un apport extrêmement précieux et révélateur pour notre connaissance de la théologie locale aux époques ptolémaïque et romaine, l'élévation du temple étant largement détruite, et des théologies thébaines dans lesquelles Médamoud et ses divinités jouent un rôle majeur. -- A propylon introduces, from the beginning of the first millennium AD, the religious complex of Medamud, on which is based an enclosure dated to Augustus by a commemorative stele. Although the construction of the gate was probably contemporary with that of the enclosure and the decoration of the embrasures began during this reign, the monument is known as the "Gate of Tiberius", as the scenes and inscriptions on the façade and on the reverse side, as well as three scenes in the northeast embrasure, bear the names of this emperor. The collapse of the doorway in the second half of the 18th century caused a large part of the decoration to disappear before F. Bisson de la Roque cleared the scree in 1926. A significant number of blocks, fortunately photographed by Cl. Robichon in 1936, disappeared also before the end of the 20th century. In spite of these regrettable losses, the preserved scenes and inscriptions, almost entirely unpublished, represent an extremely precious and revealing contribution to our knowledge of the local theology in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, the elevation of the temple having been largely destroyed, and of the Theban theologies in which Medamud and its gods play a major role.

Weierstrass-Stone,
The Weierstrass-Stone Theorem is one of the main tools of modern analysis, and several parts of functional analysis would not exist without it. The purpose of this monograph is to present its true nature by proving several increasing generalizations of this theorem, going from the classical case of subalgebras to submodules and to arbitrary subsets of continuous functions over compact spaces. Some closely connected results on uniform approximation which are important for many applications are also presented, namely the Choquet-Deny and the Kakutani Theorems for semi-lattices and for lattices of continuous functions, respectively. The beautiful variation of the Weierstrass-Stone Theorem due to von Neumann is also included with the proof due to R. I. Jewett. The monograph ends with several recent results on uniform approximation of bounded continuous functions over non-compact spaces.
