Known primarily for the novel, Aus guter Familie, Gabriele Reuter has not yet been accorded the attention she deserves for her contribution to German literature in general and women's writing in particular. The precisely observed portraits of women in the novels discussed in this volume allow us to experience the complex interplay of societal norms and individual needs which shape feminine existence. Among the themes treated are misguided motherhood, the virtue of the unwed mother, the conflict between the will to be and the need to love and be loved, woman's role in the political sphere and a comparison of womanhood in two generations. One of the enduring pleasures of reading Reuter is the rich variety of female characters from the early part of the twentieth century.

On the other hand, groups of poems which focus on specific themes are analyzed extensively, so that the principles of the poet's thoughts and the development of his work from the 40s up to the present become transparent.

In order to cope with health problems in developing or developed countries, means have to be tested before preventive, promotive and curative measures can be implemented on a nationwide basis by health authorities. Problems and constraints of such intervention trials seem to be similar in developing and developed countries although there are differences in the disease patterns. In the near future, especially the Asian countries will be facing similar health problems as the western countries, in addition to their present problems. Scientists from various Asian countries and the Federal Republic of Germany discussed intervention measures in the field of health delivery system, family planning, parasite control, mother and child health care as well as nutrition.

Market Prices and Natural Prices
In the classical tradition of economic theory, as represented by A. Smith, D. Ricardo, and more recently by P. Sraffa, market prices are seen to gravitate to or around the natural prices. Therefore, the analysis of natural prices predominated, whereas the relationship between market and natural prices was somewhat neglected. Only in the last 10 years the attempt had begun to study this relation in formal models. Chapter 1 of this book tries to assess essential features of a classical position and to provide a critical survey on the modern literature on gravitation. Among other, the following questions are discussed : how natural and how market prices and quantities are explained ; and how the capital rellocation process between sectors is specified. On this basis a discrete nonlinear dynamic model is developed in Chapter 4, which describes a classical market adjustment process. Its distinctive feature is found in asymetric decision constraints faced by producers and workers. The model dynamics which are studied using bifurcation theory and computersimulations corroborate the gravitation hypothesis. Chapter 2 introduces the necessary analytic tools and Chapter 3 surveys other formal models in this field.

This all-new critical edition of the original 1924 arrangement of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue presents an authoritative transcription of arranger Ferde Grofé's handwritten holograph score preserved in the collection of the United States Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The edition represents as best as possible the piece as premiered by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra at his "Experiment in Modern Music" concert on February 12, 1924. Grofé prepared the score for the specific talents and timbres of the Whiteman Orchestra, largely from an ink fair copy of Gershwin's two-piano short-score manuscript. Gershwin continued to modify the piano solo portion of this short score during rehearsals and, most likely, even after the premiere of the piece. Instrumentation : Jazz Band

Both theologians responded to modernist theologies by drawing from the best of their own traditions. A Life of Her Own
This study reconstructs Brittain's feminist theory, which mainly refutes assumptions made about women, supports companionate marriage, and demands the communal reorganization of child care and domestic work to enable a married woman to work outside her home. It compares her theory to her five novels. Doing so, it uncovers revealing feminist 'flaws', above all that marriage remains, the sine qua non for a woman's happiness. The study describes Brittain's way to the top as a formidable obstacle race, in which she constantly had to fight the men she loved, her children, her parents, and resulting domesticity in order to find time to write "the book of the decade". She reached her goal with the publication of Testament of Youth in 1933.

Charge of the Bull
Few will deny that 11th Bristish Armoured Division, the "Charging Bulls" of this story, was the finest armoured division on any side in the Normandy campaign in 1944. Soon after the end of the war, the history of the Division, Taurus Pursuant, was published in England in 1946. About 30 years later, Jean Brisset published his French-language book, La Charge du Taureau, about the same Division. It quickly went through two editions in France. What ensured its success was that it enlivened and humanized the well-know official accounts of the Division's battles in Operations EPSOM, GOODWOOD, BLUECOAT and others with the personal stories of participants in those battles who were often soldiers of humble but honourable rank. In addition, he paralleled the British military story with accounts of the experiences of French civilians caught up in the terror of thoses same battles, the anguish of theur tragedies and losses and the joy of their liberation. It is a history unique of its kind and deserves to be presented in this English translation. In addition to the story about 11th Armoured Division an Appendix telles about the battles in the Normandy bocage fought alongside the "Charging Bulls" by the hard-fighting 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division and how the local civilians and Resistance fighters helped them. Another Appendix recounts, among other adventures, how a little 5-year-old French girl saved an Australian Spitfire pilot from recapture by the Germans after he had been shot clown in the bocage. Finally, an Epilogue brings the story up to date. It pays homage to those, both British and French, who strove to keep alive the flames of remembrance, mutual gratitude and friendship. Containing over 100 photographs and illustrated by 9 maps, specially draw for this edition, The Charge of the Bull is a nostalgic trip back for those who fought in Normandy in 1944 and an important addition to the litterature about that campaign.

The Artist Helen Coombe (1864–1937). The Tragedy of Roger Fry's Wife
This fascinating book presents the ? rst biography of Helen Coombe, a woman admired not only for her artistic skill, but also for her intellect, personality and wit. It reveals her family background and education, her place in the Arts and Crafts Movement and her outstanding artistic output. Helen Coombe was married to Roger Fry, an artist who was to achieve most fame as an art critic, historian and protagonist of the Bloomsbury Group. Soon after their marriage in 1896, she displayed symptoms of schizophrenia. After the ? rst episode, she temporarily resumed her career and had two children with Fry, but for the last thirty years of her life she was sectioned under the Lunacy Act and committed to an institution. This thoroughly researched book makes full use of archival material, including correspondence, diaries and medical records. It illuminates late Victorian and Edwardian society and culture. It throws new light, by no means all of it favourable, on Roger Fry. It is a 'must' for all interested in the Bloomsbury Group, art history, and the handling of mental illness at a time before ef ? cacious antipsychotic drugs were available.

Série de vingt-et-une photographies, And Also The Trees ("et bien sûr les arbres") propose une approche visuelle et textuelle du paysage où l'arbre joue son rôle de modèle comme de sentinelle, soit dans sa solitude, soit dans une solitude "rassemblée" : la forêt. Souvent prises au crépuscule ou de nuit, ou dans la vitesse, ces photographies proches de la matérialité de la gravure apparaissent comme une suite de déflagrations où la notion de composition s'avère essentielle. Ecritures photographique et littéraire se retrouvent, se côtoient ou se disjoignent pour tisser un rapport au monde et établir une pensée du paysage. After the Last Ship illustrates the author's own history, as well as its connection to the history of other women and children who left India and made the journey across the Kala Pani, the Indian Ocean, and lived as migrants in other countries. In this book the author brings greater understanding of how subjectivities are shaped through embodied experiences of ‘mixed race'. She bears witness to the oppressive policies of the fascist government in Portugal in the 1960's and 1970's and the effects of displacement and exile, by reconstructing her own passage from India to Mozambique and finally to Australia. Further, the author shows the devastation that labels such as ‘half-caste', ‘canecos' and ‘monhe' can cause, when they eat at your flesh, your being, and your body. She sheds light on how identity and culture can serve as vehicles of empowerment, how experiences of belonging can germinate and take root post-diaspora.

The Public Concept of Land Ownership
In South Korea the increase of population and the economic growth together with a shortage of arable land has led to land speculation. The government has tried to encounter this speculation with legislative acts introducing ceilings on land ownership, imposing taxes on excessive land holding and controlling real-estate transactions. These public policy measures are understood in Korea as the "Public Concept of Land Ownership". The Korean reports collected in this book explain in detail this concept and measure it by its economic efficiency as well as by its constitutionality.
