Arabian Leopard. Treasures of Alula
A celebration of a magnificent creature : the Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr). Hardy's Wessex. The landscapes that inspired a writer
This fascinating book tells the story of Thomas Hardy's Wessex. Accompanying a multi-venue exhibition, it explores Hardy's life and work. Normandy, France, January 15, 1943. The weather is clear, the sun is shining. Two Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft fly over the Bayeux-Caen railroad. The target is a German freight train - and its locomotive. Aboard the first Spitfire, Sergeant Ferguson is aligning his gun sights on the target. It is 02 : 30 p. m. This will be his very last flight... HARASSING THE OCCUPYING FORCES TO PREPARE THE INVASION The RAF and RCAF had been flying hundreds of similar sorties over France for months, in order to weaken the German forces, particularly the Luftwaffe. The pilots of No. 401 Squadron were among those who took part in this patient work, made up of constant patrols and attacks. Among the 63 men mentioned in this book, 25 were killed in action between 1942 and 1944. A CRASH THAT AWOKE THE SPIRIT OF RESISTANCE Touched by William Ferguson's sacrifice, some French citizens decided to bury the young Canadian flier with dignity, honour and respect. Burmese Silver from the Colonial Period
This stunning catalogue presents an exceptional collection of rare Burmese silver. Accompanied by detailed photographs and explanatory texts, this ground-breaking book proposes a new way of looking at Burmese silver. Names, dates, places, and stories - identifying the who, when, where, and what of Burmese silver has been the focus of publications on the topic. Are these questions the best way to understand silver, however ? Alexandra Green argues that they are not. Too few pieces provide reliable information about silversmiths, production locations, and dates to allow for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Instead, a close examination of silver patterns reveals strong links with Burmese art history reaching as far back as the Bagan period (11th to 13th centuries), connections with contemporary artistic trends, and participation within the wider world of silversmithing. The first European to write about Burmese silver was H L Tilly, a colonial official from the late 19th into the early 20th century. Tasked with collecting objects for various fairs and exhibitions, he took an interest in Burmese art, publishing articles and books from the 1880s onwards. While much of what he wrote was factually inaccurate and coloured by the prejudices and stereotypes common at the time, his two volumes on Burmese silver published in 1902 and 1904 contain pictures of pieces from the early to mid 19th century. These enable a reconstruction of how silver designs evolved as the country was absorbed into the Indian Raj, and British and other Westerners became consumers of local silver products. Tilly was also correct in his interest in silver designs. Green uses the visual information from his books to describe the continuities and innovations of designs found on silver from the mid 19th through the mid 20th century, and she places these trends within local, regional, and global flows of ideas. Many studies of Burmese silver have been plagued by a lack of understanding of the Burmese context. In contrast, Green examines silver from a local perspective, drawing on Burmese texts and information that allows for a nuanced view of the motifs, designs, and patterns that appear repetitively on silver pieces. Using Graham Honeybill's collection, formed over many years, as a basis, she explores how designs and patterns circulated around the country and were innovatively combined and recombined on pieces by silversmiths producing objects for Burmese, Western, and commercial clients.

Acacia thorn in my heart
I started writing "Acacia thorn in my heart" after reading the book of a white South African woman about her childhood in the same region as mine but relating a completely different experience. She had maids, her father drove her to school and she played with real toys. I lived in the heart of the country, away from everything and had to walk five miles to go to school. I was born in Natal. My father rented a plot of land from a white owner to do market gardening. Although Indian families tended not to educate daughters, our parents decided that education was a priority for us. Despite financial difficulties, they were able to send us to school. We had to get up at five o'clock in order to catch the school train. In winter, as we were scantily clad, we shivered all the way to the station.

Victory will be next ! A Diary, 6th June - 10th August 1944
The story takes place in Brittany, focussing on Rennes and Redon, i.e. about 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, about fifteen minutes by plane as the crow flies. The months of June and July 1944 were very difficult for the allied troops. They relentlessly fought to block German reinforcements coming from the West and the South, which resulted in constant bombing and machine-gunning of the rear boundary of the front line, the area where we were living. As civilians, we did not take part in the fighting and everyday life alternated between calm periods, on the verge of being "normal", and tragic moments of great tension. ''Victory will be next ! " is a set of notes written at that moment in time, day by day, by a fifteen-year-old boy. They are, obviously, fragmented, even a little naive, But they are nonetheless a testimony of a snapshot of history within the larger picture of WWII. They should be taken as such.

Exploration archéologique de Délos. Tome 46, L'Artémision Tome I, L'histoire des fouilles et le temple hellénistique
Le principal sanctuaire d'Artémis de Délos est associé à celui d'Apollon. Th. Homolle y entreprit des fouilles en 1878 mettant au jour deux temples imbriqués, un autel, un portique coudé et un ensemble de sculptures archaïques comprenant plusieurs korès. Ses travaux furent poursuivis par F. Courby, qui comprit que le temple archaïque était conservé dans le temple hellénistique, et par R. Vallois, qui fut le premier à définir les limites de l'Artémision et à en écarter l'édifice dans lequel fut par la suite reconnu le Pythion. Il découvrit dans le pronaos du temple hellénistique un mobilier exceptionnel daté entre l'époque mycénienne et la seconde moitié du VIIIe s. Les grandes étapes de cette exploration de l'Artémision, qui s'est poursuivie jusqu'à nos jours, sont retracées dans la première partie de l'ouvrage, qui contient aussi le corpus des testimonia littéraires et épigraphiques relatifs au sanctuaire et une présentation de toutes ses composantes. La seconde partie est consacrée au temple hellénistique. Elle commence par une description des fondations et de l'euthyntéria conservées en place et se poursuit par celle des vestiges erratiques qui peuvent être restitués à l'élévation. La krépis, le toichobate, les colonnes, les antes, les murs, l'entablement, les frontons et la couverture sont successivement présentés. Leur analyse fonde la restitution du monument, un édifice hexastyle prostyle ionique dont toute l'élévation était en marbre cycladique. L'intérieur du naos était sans doute orné de colonnes engagées. La construction, qui s'est principalement déroulée entre 190 et 180, fut compliquée à la fois par l'existence de monuments jouxtant le nouveau temple et par la volonté de conserver intact, pendant la première phase du chantier, le naos du temple archaïque, englobé dans la construction hellénistique. L'édifice s'inscrit à la fois dans la lignée des temples athéniens ioniques prostyles hexastyles et dans la koinè hellénistique qui, sans être uniforme, prend le pas au début du IIe s. sur les spécificités du style développé par les Déliens de la fin du IVe et à la fin du IIIe s. av. J. -C. The main sanctuary of Artemis at Delos is associated with that of Apollo. In 1878, Th. Homolle undertook excavations there, unearthing two overlapping temples, an altar, an L-shaped portico and a collection of ancient sculptures including a number of korai. Homolle's work was carried on by F. Courby, who understood that the ancient temple was preserved within the Hellenistic temple, and by R. Vallois, who was the first to outline the boundaries of the Artemision, and to rule out the edifice which was later identified as the Pythion. R. Vallois also discovered exceptional material that dates from between the Mycenian era and the second half of the 8th century in the Hellenistic Temple's Pronaos. This book describes the main phases of the exploration of the Artemision, which continues today, and also contains the corpus of the literary and epigraphic testimonia related to the sanctuary, as well as a presentation of all of its components. The second part is devoted to the Hellenistic Temple. It begins with a description of the foundations and the euthynteria that remain in place, and goes on to describe the various remains that can be attributed to the elevation. The crepidoma, the toichobate, the columns, the antae, the walls, the entablature, the pediments and the roof are all presented one after the other. Their analysis forms the basis for the restitution of the monument, a hexastyle, prostyle, ionic edifice that was built in Cycladic marble. The interior of the naos was most likely decorated with engaged columns. The construction process, which took place mainly between 190 and 180 BC, was hampered by the monuments that adjoined the new temple and by the attempts, during the first phase of the construction process, to preserve the naos of the ancient temple, incorporated into the Hellenistic building. The edifice is very much in line with the Athenian ionic, prostyle, hexastyle temples and the koinè Hellenistic style that emerged at the start of the 2nd century, and to a certain extent, took over from the specific style developed by the Delians that emerged at the end of the 4th and went on until the end of the 3rd century BC.

From Scarcity to Sustainability
For futures studies and environmentalism the late 1960s and early 1970s were a heyday period of great publicity, and much scientific interest was devoted to them. The study 'Limits to Growth', commissioned by the Club of Rome, has played an important role for the further advancement of these fascinating fields. Each of them in its own way deals with the long term prospects of humankind and desirable future paths of humanity and the globe. This investigation illustrates a very important phase in the development of these two areas and writes a history of ideas and a history of impact of the Limits to Growth debate and other activities of the Club of Rome. It includes information that has so far only been known to a very limited number of directly involved individuals and looks into very recent stages of the sustainable development debate and newest developments of more pragmatic and critical futures studies. For the purpose of this study some 100 interviews have been made worldwide with very well known and often influential individuals. Among them are : Sicco Mansholt, Alexander King, Jan Tinbergen, Robert Jungk, Saburo Okita, Lord Kennet, Johan Galtung, Barry Commoner and Philip de Seynes.

Given that GCE is now perceived as a means of bringing contemporary world issues into classrooms, teachers and school principals are increasingly encouraged to adopt it. Indeed, new skills frameworks require students to develop knowledge on global issues, while students themselves are demanding this education because they seek the means to play a greater role in the world. Often addressed in the form of social or environmental issues perceived as being of serious concern, GCE is expected to feature increasingly in the curricula of schools and universities in the future. But in Belgium and around the world, Global Citizenship Education (GCE) has been the subject of debate in recent years. This handbook reflects these various debates. Initially published in French, it is, above all, an attempt to compensate for the absence of texts on the subject from the French-speaking world, notably from the Belgian research and practice world. This English version enhances the international visibility of the vital academic, institutional, and professional sectors addressing GCE in Belgium, and highlights the specific features of GCE in this country. It will be particularly useful for students, teachers and practitioners, and everyone who wants to understand the challenges of Global Citizenship Education today.

Legal Friction : Law, Narrative, and Identity Politics in Biblical Israel tracks the mystery of narratives in the Hebrew Bible and their allusions to Sinai laws by highlighting intertextual allusions created by verbal resonances. While the second and the third parts of the volume illustrate allusions to Sinai narratives made by some narratives occurring in the post-Sinaitic era, twenty-three Genesis narratives are analyzed to show that the protagonists were bound by Sinai Laws before God supposedly gave them to Moses, anticipating the Book of Jubilees. Legal Friction suggests that most of Genesis was composed during or after the Babylonian exile, after the codification of most Sinai laws, which Genesis protagonists consistently violate. The fact that they are not punished for these violations implies to the exiles that the Sinai Covenant was unconditional. In addition, the author proposes that Genesis contains a hidden polemic, encouraging the Judean exiles to follow the revisions of laws of the Covenant Code by the Holiness Code and Deuteronomy. Genesis narratives, like those describing post-Sinai events, often cannot be understood properly without recognition of their allusions to biblical laws.

Stéphane Lovighi-Bourgogne et Stéphane Ménétrier se sont rencontrés en 1996, à Barjols, dans l'arrière-pays varois. Stéphane Ménétrier qui avait promené ses objectifs par-delà les frontières fut tout de suite subjugué par les toiles, pleines de mondes, d'un jeune Lovighi. A cette époque, un premier recueil, tiré à compte d'auteur, mêlant les dessins de l'un et les photos de l'autre, voit le jour ; comme une trace nécessaire pour sceller cette amitié devenue inévitable. Quelques années après, Stéphane Lovighi-Bourgogne installe son atelier à Cotignac, et commence, dès lors, ces rendez-vous plus réguliers entre ces deux Stéphane, où quand l'un, photographie, l'autre, dessine sa peinture. Deux regards croisés - l'un sur l'autre - pour deux voyages créatifs mais qui, au fond, racontent une seule et même aventure : celle d'une mâle tendresse, toute contenue, entre ces deux écorchés qui se sont bien trouvés. This book is based on detailed interviews with a group of Irish women who have experienced marital separation. It links the women's accounts with literature on the values and beliefs about marriage, women and family which were prevalent when they were growing up in Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s. The book chronicles their young adult years, the early stages of their marriages and the events and processes which led to their separations. It explores the women's emotional reactions at the time of separating, the types of support which they found beneficial and the personal, social and financial consequences of having separated. Although the book is written from a sociological perspective, the combination of theory and practical insights make it accessible to a wide variety of readers. It aims to generate discussion and deepen understanding of an area into which there has been minimal research in Ireland and which poses a range of important questions for future researchers, practitioners and policy-makers.
