I did not intend to write a scholarly book, for I did not want to intellectualize my life. Nor did I wish to romanticize it. I wanted to describe it as I lived it, with emphasis on people. Again, this book is a story, the story of my life, wherein the personal and the professional have intermingled and strengthened each other, making a better whole of my person, personality, aspirations, and talents. The Wider Goldsmiths' Trade in Elizabethan and Stuart London is the first book to study all aspects of the Goldsmiths' trade. It challenges the assumption that the manufacture of silver plate and gold jewellery was the company's only activity during the seventeenth century. It considers allied trades such as refining, wiredrawing, and the making of small-swords and watches, as well as the development of the modern banking system. On Elizabeth I's accession, England was essentially a 'third world economy', with exports mainly of wool, unfinished woolen cloth and some minerals, whilst imports consisted of a great range of goods including luxuries such as silks, fine linens, and even scissors. By the end of the seventeenth century, the situation was transformed : a burgeoning maritime trade with many parts of the world enabled the import of raw materials as well as some luxury goods and a wide range of exports which included certain goods produced in London with an international reputation for quality, such as beaver hats and mathematical instruments. Throughout the period, religious refugees and economic migrants brought their skills and knowledge to England. At the Restoration, Royalists returning to London from the Continent introduced French and Low Country fashions in dress, manners, cuisine and dining practice. Refining, wiredrawing, and the making of plate, smallwares and jewellery were at the heart of the trade and of concern to the Goldsmiths' Company that had responsibility for ensuring that the correct alloys were used for silver and gold wares. This was not always the case for clocks, watches and swords. Nevertheless, they are included in this study as several members of the Company were instrumental in the development of clock and watch making in the city. Towards the end of the seventeenth century, the great increase in the sale of watches with gold and silver cases forced the Company to become involved in the control of this trade. Similarly, after the Civil Wars, the wearing of the small-sword by all those with aspirations to gentility gave rise to a demarcation dispute between the Goldsmiths' and Cutlers' Companies. Further, during the Commonwealth, goldsmith-bankers developed the clearing system which led to modern retail banking. This book considers the wider Goldsmiths' trade against dynamic changes : the organization and control of its branches and the design, manufacture and sale of its wares. The twelve chapters cover a range of topics - from history and context, to the various branches of the trade.

In 1896, Hilma af Klint and four other like-minded women artists left the Edelweiss Society and founded the "Friday Group", also known as "The Five". They met every Friday for spiritual meetings, including prayers, studies of the New Testament, meditation and séances. The medium exercised automatic writing and mediumistic drawing. Eventually they established contact with spiritual beings whom they called "The High Ones". In 1896, the five women began taking meticulous notes of the mediumistic messages conveyed by the spirits. In time, Hilma af Klint felt she had been selected for more important messages. After ten years of esoteric training with "The Five", aged 43, Hilma af Klint accepted a major assignment, the execution of The Paintings for the Temple. This commission, which engaged the artist from 1906 to 1915, changed the course of her life. In 1908, Rudolf Steiner, leader of the German Theosophical Society, held several lectures in Stockholm. He also visited af Klint's studio and saw some of the early Paintings for the Temple. In 1913, Steiner founded the Anthroposophical Society, which af Klint joined in 1920 and remained a member for the rest of her life.

This book presents the life and work of the Victorian landscape painter Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1921). With beautiful illustrations of his pictures, showing a timeless countryside, it explores Glendening's rapid rise from railway clerk to acclaimed artist. Whilst critics often reviewed his exhibited works, very little has been written about the artist himself. Here, new and extensive research removes layers of mystery and misinformation about his life, family and career, accurately placing him in the midst of the British art world during much of the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. Glendening was a man from humble origins, working fulltime as a railway clerk, yet was able to make his London exhibition debut at the age of twenty. This would have been almost impossible before the Victorian era, an extraordinary period when social mobility was a real possibility. Although his paintings show a tranquil and unspoiled landscape, his environment was rapidly being transformed by social, scientific and industrial developments, while advances in transport, photography and other technical discoveries undoubtedly influenced him and his fellow painters. Celebrating his uniquely Victorian story, the book places Glendening within his historical context. Running alongside the main text is a timeline outlining significant landmarks, from political and social events to artistic and technical innovations. Thoroughly researched over many years, the narrative explores why and for whom he painted, his artistic training and inspirations. Painting at Hampton and Greenwich, beside the River Thames, Glendening soon discovered the Welsh hills and became a member of the Bettws-y-Coed Artists' Colony, founded by David Cox. His masterful landscapes also include views of the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District, the Norfolk Broads, the South Downs and the Isle of Wight. Le présent ouvrage vient conclure un ambitieux programme d'inventaire de la documentation de ces fouilles conservée dans plusieurs institutions françaises et égyptiennes (Maison de l'Orient et de la Méditerranée à Lyon, Centre franco-égyptien d'étude des temples de Karnak). L'ensemble des résultats obtenus à l'issue des campagnes de recherche de 1975-1976 et 1977 est ici réévalué à la lumière d'un sondage d'évaluation stratigraphique effectué en 2015 dont le mobilier archéologique est analysé par une dizaine de spécialistes. Bien que la séquence des constructions et des occupations de la cour du Xe pylône reste très proche de celle restituée initialement par le fouilleur, les analyses récentes permettent de réviser en profondeur la chronologie du site, et se révèlent donc essentielle pour la connaissance de l'histoire urbaine de Thèbes. A une longue phase d'habitat du Moyen Empire succèdent la construction et plusieurs réaménagements de la cour monumentale du Xe pylône durant le Nouvel Empire. Quelques attestations plus tardives témoignent enfin d'une fréquentation limitée avant l'abandon définitif du secteur à l'époque islamique et la redécouverte du site au XIXe siècle. -- In the mid-1970s, Michel Azim, architect at the Franco-Egyptian Centre for the Study of the Temples of Karnak, undertook the first large-scale archaeological explorations in the courtyard of the 10th pylon since the work of Georges Legrain at the beginning of the 20th century. Despite its importance, however, this operation has remained largely unpublished and the results of the work carried out have only been the subject of a few preliminary reports and notes. The present book concludes an ambitious program of inventory of the documentation of these excavations stored in several French and Egyptian institutions (Maison de l'Orient et de la Méditerranée at Lyon, Franco-Egyptian Centre for the Study of the Temples of Karnak). All the results of the research carried out from 1975 to 1977 are re-evaluated here in the light of a stratigraphic evaluation test-pit undertaken in 2015-the archaeological material of which was analyzed by a dozen specialists. Although the restitution of the sequence of constructions and occupations of the 10th pylon courtyard remains very close to the one initially established by the excavator, recent analyses now make it possible to more precisely calibrate the chronology of the site, and thus prove essential to the study of Ancient Thebes. A long phase of settlement in the Middle Kingdom was followed by the construction and several rearrangements of the 10th pylon courtyard during the New Kingdom. Numerous later material traces indicate successive settlements in the courtyard in the 1st millennium BC, and above all a vast Paleochristian settlement in the 4th century AD. Finally, a few late attestations testify to a limited use of the area before it was abandoned in the Islamic period.

Cette synthèse régionale dresse un état des connaissances sur la mangrove, met en évidence les interactions variées entre les sociétés et leur environnement littoral, explicite la spécificité des " Rivières du Sud ", littoraux à mangrove compris entre le Sénégal et la Sierra Leone. Elle réunit un ensemble d'informations originales (volume 1) et un recueil bibliographique de plus de 3 000 références (volume 2), et constitue un outil indispensable pour les acteurs, scientifiques comme décideurs, concernés par la gestion des littoraux ouest-africains. Par un dialogue entre sciences de la nature et de la société, cet ouvrage ouvre des perspectives conceptuelles et méthodologiques et contribue ainsi à la réflexion plus générale sur les rapports entre environnement et développement, sciences et société. Mangroves are much more than just mangles. Forests in the sea or sea marshes converted into rice fields, they form one of the most original coastal landscape types in the tropics. Since their discovery by Portuguese navigators, they have generated contradictory statements and have been the centre of many issues often leading to contention between 'conservationists' and those in favour of 'productivity'. This regional synthesis reviews the state of knowledge on mangrove, shows the varied interactions between societies and their coastal environment and explains the specific features of the 'Rivières du Sud' (southern rivers), the coastal mangrove areas from Senegal to Sierra Leone. It consists of a set of original information (Volume 7) and a bibliography of more than 3,000 references (Volume 2), forming an essential tool for all those - both scientists and decision-makers - involved in the management of West African coastal zones. By establishing a dialogue between natural and social sciences, the work opens up conceptual and methodological prospects and contributes to more general reflection on the relations between the environment and development and between science and society.

The work shows the usefulness and limitation of modern logic in the study of traditional metaphysical problems. As is the usual case in all criticism of analytic philosophers against traditional philosophy, word usage must be limited to what the human mind can know. The notion of timeless knowledge for example contradicts our normal mode of word usage and cannot serve as adequate in reference to knowledge be it that of man or of God. If timeless knowledge applied to divine mode of knowing then there cannot be human freedom.

Il s'étend au-delà de l'Antiquité, intégrant des discours actuels sur les identités culturelles insulaires par rapport à celles des continents, y compris celle de la Grande-Bretagne, identité insulaire débattue. Throughout history, islands have been treated as distinct places, unlike mainland and continental masses. In geographic terms, islands are merely pieces of land surrounded by water, but the perception of island life has never been neutral. Rather, the term 'insularity' - belonging to/being of an island - has been romanticized and associated with otherness. Islands have often been deemed to have different histories from the mainland and with more readily isolated socio-political, cultural and economic characteristics. Yet connectivity has also been an important feature of island life as the sea can be a linking rather than just a dividing body, motivating and maintaining informal and formal connections. Fifty unique archaeological objects - most never displayed before outside Cyprus, Crete and Sardinia - tell exceptional stories of insular identity, over a period of 4000 years. The movement of people and episodes of migration between islands and their surrounding mainlands is also explored, through architecture, material culture, crafts and technologies present in the Mediterranean islands. Islanders has a broad diachronic scope and applies integrative analytical approach, bringing together research findings from scientific fields within archaeology, as well as a multi-scalar approach to past human interaction within continental and island environments.

Faced with the semantic wealth of literary genres and narrative processes, archaeology provides us with a huge variety of material information that makes absolute sense and covers at least three areas, architecture and the organisation of spaces, iconographical objects and programmes, as well as the practices carried out in sacred spaces, be they ritualistic or not. The main issue here is the place of religion in the everyday life of the cities : the Gods were everywhere, "in spaces with little human presence", inside and outside the walls, in urban spaces, in the private sphere but also, and above all in the wild. This book is a comparative study of Polish psychological verbs. The analysis concentrates on the lexicon-syntax interface of psych verbs, and constitutes an argument in favour of its strong dependence on event structure. The aim of this study is to show that the class of Polish psych verbs, as in many other languages, is not uniform. The analysed subclasses are differentiated on the basis of their causation and stativity. The marriage of those semantic traits and their structural representation is possible only if it is performed via event structure configuration, a layer which appears to underlie the conceptualisation of events.

Inge ARTEEL Biographie einer Biographielosen Based on my experiences writing a monographical biography of Friederike Mayröcker I explore some dilemma's and paradoxes of biographical writing, both in the texts of Mayröcker herself and in the writing about her texts. In her prose texts as well as in paratexts Mayröcker cites and parodies conventions of (auto)biographical literature ; referential truth is both suggested and thwarted. When writing a biographical portrait, these ambivalences should be taken into account. En me fondant sur mon expérience d'écrire une biographie monographique de Friederike Mayröcker, j'examinerai quelques dilemmes et paradoxes de l'écriture biographique dans les textes de Mayröcker même et dans les écrits qui traitent de ses textes. The spatiality of the room is held to be an important condition for the specific appearance and an appropriate understanding of Mayröcker's literature. The guest, who is invited to the cramped room, can be seen as a deputy of the reader. Both of them have to step onto areas, which show narrow contacts between the body of the author and the hoarded materials. In that way, Friederike Mayröcker is a challenge for literary criticism as well as for modern archival theory. Le présent article traite de photographies de l'appartement viennois de Friederike Mayröcker dans lequel l'auteure est immergée dans des morceaux de papier, des manuscrits, des coupures de journaux, des brochures, des prospectus et des livres. La spatialité de la pièce apparaît comme une condition importante pour appréhender cet aspect spécifique et comme un moyen approprié pour comprendre la littérature mayröckerienne. L'hôte qui est invité dans la pièce exiguë peut être considéré comme un représentant du lecteur. This paper tries to clarify this concept by referring to Breton's Theorization of Surrealism in the two manifestoes, and to highlight Friederike Mayröcker's relation to this movement. The confrontation of Breton's manifestoes with extracts from Mayröcker's Magische Blätter and Gesammelte Gedichte leads to an analysis of keywords of Surrealism such as madness, dream, psychic automatism, association of ideas, magic, surreality, and reveals not only similarities, but also important differences in Breton's and Friederike Mayröcker's conception and practice of their art. As a referring point the research of Francis Ponge in the field of things and their "visualization" in language helped a lot to open a space by comparing the poetics of these two great poets. The formulation of six thesis to Friederike Mayröcker's "Stilleben" tries to outline six views that interact with each other, so that the question of how we see things and their relation to language and what literature can thereby show us could be traced out more clearly. 1) The thing of "Stilleben" is the book, 2) The thing "book" is dissolved, 3) The image of "Stilleben" is the thing, 4) The thing must be created, 5) The "I" is a subject-object, 6) The thing is not the thing, but the poetic. The path towards obtaining the degree in "humanities" and his intentions to elaborate a PhD-thesis are placed in the larger context of his efforts to integrate himself in the French society on the one hand and in the context of his efforts to establish himself as a German-speaking poet, on the other. We exploit here a number of unpublished documentary materials from the French archive, as well as a number of interviews, again unpublished, that we took between 1998 and 2000 with a number of persons close at that time to Paul Celan. Laurent DEDRYVERE Les guerres du Schleswig-Holstein, lieu de mémoire nationaliste dans l'Allemagne wilhelminienne The present paper deals with German nationalist "lieux de mémoire" (sites of memory) related to the Schleswig-Holstein wars (1848-1851 and 1864) in the German Empire. Eight historical novels, published between 1881 and 1914, were used as primary sources for this article. These books played an important part in the popula-rization of the historical arguments justifying the an-nexation of both duchies by Prussia. Most novels were written either while Köller was Oberpräsident of the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein, or a little later, and they can only be understood in the light of the Germanization policy which was carried out in this province. In the case of Northern Schleswig, nationalist intellectuals were confronted with two difficulties. Firstly, even the champions of the German cause in Northern Schleswig spoke a Danish dialect as their mother tongue. Secondly, individual members of one and the same family sometimes declared their support for different national camps. So neither the mother tongue and the national-political opinions, nor the "lineage" and the national-political opinions could be automatically equated. Most authors payed attention to the national peculiarities of Northern Schleswig in their work, whilst at the same time supporting the Germanization policy. The detour via the German history allowed a legitimation of the Köllerian politics. Some radical völkisch novelists apparently promoted a German-Danish reconciliation. But this was not aimed at the "real" Danish speakers. An imagined union of all Germanic peoples was at stake, not the political rights of an ethnic minority. Der vorliegende Artikel untersucht die deutschen nationalistischen Erinnerungsorte der beiden schleswig-holsteinischen Kriege (1848-1851 und 1864) im Deutschen Kaiserreich. Als Quelle dienen acht historische Romane, die zwischen 1881 und 1914 veröffentlicht wurden. Eine wesentliche Funktion dieser Werke bestand darin, historische Argumente für einen Verzicht Dänemarks auf die Herzogtümer und für ihre Abtretung an Preußen in populärer Form anzuführen. Die meisten Romane wurden während Köllers Oberpräsidentschaft in Schleswig-Holstein oder kurz danach verfasst und sind nur vor dem Hintergrund der Germanisierungspolitik in Nordschleswig zu verstehen. Die nationalistischen Intellektuellen waren im Falle Nordschleswigs mit zwei Schwierigkeiten konfrontiert. Erstens hatten selbst die Vorkämpfer der deutschen Sache in Nordschleswig einen dänischen Dialekt als Muttersprache. Zweitens bekannten sich manchmal Mitglieder ein und derselben Familie zu unterschiedlichen nationalen Lagern. Es gab also weder zwischen Muttersprache und national-politischer Gesinnung noch zwischen "Abstammung" und national-politischer Gesinnung eine systematische Korrelation. Die meisten Verfasser beachten in ihren Werken die nationalen Besonderheiten Schleswigs, sprechen sich aber gleichzeitig für die Germanisierungspolitik aus. Der Umweg über die jüngste deutsche Geschichte dient also der Legitimierung der Köllerschen Politik. Manche radikal völkischen Schriftsteller treten für eine deutsch-dänische Versöhnung ein. In keinem Fall sind aber die wirklichen Dänischsprachigen gemeint. Es geht um ein erträumtes Bündnis aller Germanen, nicht um die politischen Rechte einer ethnischen Minderheit.
