To her reputation as a minor mystic and the author of the first autobiography in the English language can be added a greater claim. The Book, Margery Kempe's record of her struggle for self-definition, demands inclusion among the serious contributions to feminist literature.

She was born in Mwumba, in the north of Burundi. Shy and hardworking, Denise Bucumi met a man, Pierre Nkurunziza. Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940), hitherto consigned to a footnote in musical history as Stravinsky's piano teacher, is undergoing rediscovery. A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Balakirev and Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920. Songs of Love was first published in 1904. No evidence survives of any public performance in Kashperova's lifetime although it is very likely that they were performed at her regular 'musical evenings at home on Tuesdays' mentioned in her Memoirs. The transparency of the piano writing strongly suggests that she would accompany herself singing. Kashperova, by all accounts, possessed a fine voice, and in the summer of 1906 she decided 'to learn from the artistry', as she put it, of the tenor Raimond von Zur-Mühlen who was widely celebrated for having developed (with Clara Schumann) the Lieder-Abend tradition. His summer-schools on the Baltic coast were frequented by aspiring singers from all over Europe, even Japan and India. Kashperova herself was responsible for the poetic lyrics of Songs of Love (in both Russian and German), which may well have emerged from her own bittersweet experience of life and love ; she was not to marry until 1916 at the age of forty-four. That Kashperova is the author of both the music and the lyrics of Songs of Love would suggest that they express very personal sentiments. Instrumentation : soprano (tenor) and piano

Jean-Jacques Cambrelin nous propose de découvrir son roman "Pièges" dont l'héroïne, Carole, est envasée dans un marécage nauséabond. Née d'une mère odieuse qui n'aura de cesse de l'anéantir et d'un père émigré algérien aimant mais plongé lui-même dans une atmosphère de calomnie et de peurs, Carole, alias Jacqueline, alias Aziza croit tromper l'ennui et l'écoeurement en changeant de prénom. Cela ne suffira pas à la sortir des sables mouvants dans lesquels elle est enlisée. Elle et les siens pataugent dans cet univers désespérant où la terre du Nord, belle et lourde, les enterre vivants. La méchanceté de la mère, les soubresauts vains du père, l'apathie des frères et soeurs et des habitants, ouvriers à l'usine du bourg, tissent autour de Carole un véritable piège, une toile semblable à celle de l'araignée qu'elle apprivoisera en prison après son crime. Carole sera désignée sans mal coupable idéale d'un infanticide dans lequel se sustenteront la justice, les ragots et les bassesses. L'auteur ne ternit ni n'accable en aucune manière sa région, le Nord de la France, qui lui est chère. Au contraire, il veut nous la faire comprendre et nous la faire aimer, en nous emmenant explorer ses fonds les plus bas pour mieux lui rendre gloire. Voilà donc un roman noir, un vrai, où le jour et la nuit se ressemblent mais où les vraies couleurs sont intérieures et profondes. Jean-Jacques Cambrelin se découvre être un peintre des âmes autant que des paysages dans ce livre troublant et subversif. Un rien de Céline, un rien de Zola, de Moravia... mais un tout de Cambrelin, poétique et sombre. Extrait : Mon pays, on ne s'y arrête pas. On y passe et on l'oublie. Les chemins qui le traversent mènent vers l'horizon et l'horizon est un mirage. Ici, l'ennui vous happe comme un engrenage monstrueux. Ici, l'ennui, c'est une vis sans fin. Vraiment sans fin... Et pourtant, il faut vivre ici. Comme on peut... Je suis née là et je ne suis jamais partie. Pourquoi partir ? Il aurait fallu suivre un de ces types avec un sourire comme un couperet qui vous prend la main et vous promet la lune. Je n'avais pas la tête à ça. Le désastre n'est jamais loin quand vous vous fiez à un sourire. Je n'allais pas unir mon existence à ce genre de comète qui, à la première occasion venue, me laisserait tomber... J'avais au moins compris que l'amour est un mirage. J'ai regardé partir mes amies mais je ne les enviais pas. Il suffisait que le type parle de la ville, du soleil ou de la mer pour emporter la mise. Ces idiotes ont rêvé mais l'amour de leur vie n'était qu'un dom Juan en quête d'aventure. Les espoirs de ces grues les ont menées au fond d'un lit, ce marécage où la vie s'enlise et se désespère...

Inge ARTEEL Biographie einer Biographielosen Based on my experiences writing a monographical biography of Friederike Mayröcker I explore some dilemma's and paradoxes of biographical writing, both in the texts of Mayröcker herself and in the writing about her texts. In her prose texts as well as in paratexts Mayröcker cites and parodies conventions of (auto)biographical literature ; referential truth is both suggested and thwarted. When writing a biographical portrait, these ambivalences should be taken into account. En me fondant sur mon expérience d'écrire une biographie monographique de Friederike Mayröcker, j'examinerai quelques dilemmes et paradoxes de l'écriture biographique dans les textes de Mayröcker même et dans les écrits qui traitent de ses textes. Dans ses textes en prose ainsi que dans les paratextes, Mayröcker cite et parodie des conventions de la littérature (auto)biographique ; la vérité référentielle est en même temps suggérée et troublée/contrariée. The spatiality of the room is held to be an important condition for the specific appearance and an appropriate understanding of Mayröcker's literature. The guest, who is invited to the cramped room, can be seen as a deputy of the reader. Both of them have to step onto areas, which show narrow contacts between the body of the author and the hoarded materials. In that way, Friederike Mayröcker is a challenge for literary criticism as well as for modern archival theory. Le présent article traite de photographies de l'appartement viennois de Friederike Mayröcker dans lequel l'auteure est immergée dans des morceaux de papier, des manuscrits, des coupures de journaux, des brochures, des prospectus et des livres. La spatialité de la pièce apparaît comme une condition importante pour appréhender cet aspect spécifique et comme un moyen approprié pour comprendre la littérature mayröckerienne. L'hôte qui est invité dans la pièce exiguë peut être considéré comme un représentant du lecteur. This paper tries to clarify this concept by referring to Breton's Theorization of Surrealism in the two manifestoes, and to highlight Friederike Mayröcker's relation to this movement. The confrontation of Breton's manifestoes with extracts from Mayröcker's Magische Blätter and Gesammelte Gedichte leads to an analysis of keywords of Surrealism such as madness, dream, psychic automatism, association of ideas, magic, surreality, and reveals not only similarities, but also important differences in Breton's and Friederike Mayröcker's conception and practice of their art. As a referring point the research of Francis Ponge in the field of things and their "visualization" in language helped a lot to open a space by comparing the poetics of these two great poets. The formulation of six thesis to Friederike Mayröcker's "Stilleben" tries to outline six views that interact with each other, so that the question of how we see things and their relation to language and what literature can thereby show us could be traced out more clearly. 1) The thing of "Stilleben" is the book, 2) The thing "book" is dissolved, 3) The image of "Stilleben" is the thing, 4) The thing must be created, 5) The "I" is a subject-object, 6) The thing is not the thing, but the poetic. Andrei CORBEA-HOISIE Paul Celan Student an der Sorbonne The paper represents the first biographical synthesis dedicated to the university studies of the young Paul Celan, registered at Sorbonne immediately after his arrival in Paris in the summer of 1945, that is more than half of year after he had left Romania. The path towards obtaining the degree in "humanities" and his intentions to elaborate a PhD-thesis are placed in the larger context of his efforts to integrate himself in the French society on the one hand and in the context of his efforts to establish himself as a German-speaking poet, on the other. We exploit here a number of unpublished documentary materials from the French archive, as well as a number of interviews, again unpublished, that we took between 1998 and 2000 with a number of persons close at that time to Paul Celan. Laurent DEDRYVERE Les guerres du Schleswig-Holstein, lieu de mémoire nationaliste dans l'Allemagne wilhelminienne The present paper deals with German nationalist "lieux de mémoire" (sites of memory) related to the Schleswig-Holstein wars (1848-1851 and 1864) in the German Empire. Eight historical novels, published between 1881 and 1914, were used as primary sources for this article. These books played an important part in the popula-rization of the historical arguments justifying the an-nexation of both duchies by Prussia. Most novels were written either while Köller was Oberpräsident of the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein, or a little later, and they can only be understood in the light of the Germanization policy which was carried out in this province. In the case of Northern Schleswig, nationalist intellectuals were confronted with two difficulties. Firstly, even the champions of the German cause in Northern Schleswig spoke a Danish dialect as their mother tongue. Secondly, individual members of one and the same family sometimes declared their support for different national camps. So neither the mother tongue and the national-political opinions, nor the "lineage" and the national-political opinions could be automatically equated. Most authors payed attention to the national peculiarities of Northern Schleswig in their work, whilst at the same time supporting the Germanization policy. The detour via the German history allowed a legitimation of the Köllerian politics. Some radical völkisch novelists apparently promoted a German-Danish reconciliation. But this was not aimed at the "real" Danish speakers. An imagined union of all Germanic peoples was at stake, not the political rights of an ethnic minority. Der vorliegende Artikel untersucht die deutschen nationalistischen Erinnerungsorte der beiden schleswig-holsteinischen Kriege (1848-1851 und 1864) im Deutschen Kaiserreich. Als Quelle dienen acht historische Romane, die zwischen 1881 und 1914 veröffentlicht wurden. Eine wesentliche Funktion dieser Werke bestand darin, historische Argumente für einen Verzicht Dänemarks auf die Herzogtümer und für ihre Abtretung an Preußen in populärer Form anzuführen. Die meisten Romane wurden während Köllers Oberpräsidentschaft in Schleswig-Holstein oder kurz danach verfasst und sind nur vor dem Hintergrund der Germanisierungspolitik in Nordschleswig zu verstehen. Die nationalistischen Intellektuellen waren im Falle Nordschleswigs mit zwei Schwierigkeiten konfrontiert. Erstens hatten selbst die Vorkämpfer der deutschen Sache in Nordschleswig einen dänischen Dialekt als Muttersprache. Zweitens bekannten sich manchmal Mitglieder ein und derselben Familie zu unterschiedlichen nationalen Lagern. Es gab also weder zwischen Muttersprache und national-politischer Gesinnung noch zwischen "Abstammung" und national-politischer Gesinnung eine systematische Korrelation. Die meisten Verfasser beachten in ihren Werken die nationalen Besonderheiten Schleswigs, sprechen sich aber gleichzeitig für die Germanisierungspolitik aus. Der Umweg über die jüngste deutsche Geschichte dient also der Legitimierung der Köllerschen Politik. Manche radikal völkischen Schriftsteller treten für eine deutsch-dänische Versöhnung ein. In keinem Fall sind aber die wirklichen Dänischsprachigen gemeint. Es geht um ein erträumtes Bündnis aller Germanen, nicht um die politischen Rechte einer ethnischen Minderheit.

Ce livre retrace l'histoire du premier grand kidnapping français qui agita le pays en 1960 avant de découvrir qu'il était calqué mot pour mot sur un roman américain de la Série noire ! Un jeune ouvrier, séducteur invétéré, revenu de la guerre d'Algérie et reconverti dans la vente d'électrophones, se jette dans les nuits parisiennes. Il rencontre une jeune reine de beauté danoise qui découvre Paris en traînant aux terrasses de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Tout bascule lorsqu'un escroc de 39 ans, antisocial viscéral, met la main sur un livre de la Série noire qui le révèle à lui-même. Au gré des rencontres, des voyages entre Copenhague et la Côte d'Azur, ces trois personnages que rien ne destinait à réunir, se retrouvent au coeur de l'affaire la plus retentissante du début des années 1960. S'appuyant sur une enquête approfondie et des documents judiciaires inédits, le livre se déploie comme un roman policier qui peu à peu se déplace sur une autre scène, où la littérature et le cinéma deviennent les vrais protagonistes de l'histoire. This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition devoted to a fascinating group of drawings by the Anglo-Swiss Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), one of eighteenth-century Europe's most idiosyncratic, original and controversial artists. Best known for his notoriously provocative painting The Nightmare, Fuseli energetically cultivated a reputation for eccentricity, with vividly stylised images of supernatural creatures, muscle-bound heroes, and damsels in distress. While these convinced some viewers of the greatness of his genius, others dismissed him as a charlatan, or as completely mad. Fuseli's contemporaries might have thought him even crazier had they been aware that in private he harboured an obsessive preoccupation with the figure of the modern woman, which he pursued almost exclusively in his drawings. Where one might have expected idealised bodies with the grace and proportions of classical statues, here instead we encounter figures whose anatomies have been shaped by stiff bodices, waistbands, puffed sleeves, and pointed shoes, and whose heads are crowned by coiffures of the most bizarre and complicated sort. Often based on the artist's wife Sophia Rawlins, the women who populate Fuseli's graphic work tend to adopt brazenly aggressive attitudes, either fixing their gaze directly on the viewer or ignoring our presence altogether. Usually they appear on their own, in isolation on the page ; sometimes they are grouped together to form disturbing narratives, erotic fantasies that may be mysterious, vaguely menacing, or overtly transgressive, but where women always play a dominant role. Among the many intriguing questions raised by these works is the extent to which his wife Sophia was actively involved in fashioning her appearance for her own pleasure, as well as for the benefit of her husband. By bringing together more than fifty of these studies (roughly a third of the known total), The Courtauld Gallery will give audiences an unprecedented opportunity to see one of the finest Romantic-period draughtsmen at his most innovative and exciting. Visitors to the show and readers of the lavishly illustrated catalogue will further be invited to consider how Fuseli's drawings of women, as products of the turbulent aftermath of the American and French Revolutions, speak to concerns about gender and sexuality that have never been more relevant than they are today. The exhibition showcases drawings brought together from international collections, including the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand, and from other European and North American institutions.

After the Last Ship illustrates the author's own history, as well as its connection to the history of other women and children who left India and made the journey across the Kala Pani, the Indian Ocean, and lived as migrants in other countries. In this book the author brings greater understanding of how subjectivities are shaped through embodied experiences of ‘mixed race'. She bears witness to the oppressive policies of the fascist government in Portugal in the 1960's and 1970's and the effects of displacement and exile, by reconstructing her own passage from India to Mozambique and finally to Australia. Further, the author shows the devastation that labels such as ‘half-caste', ‘canecos' and ‘monhe' can cause, when they eat at your flesh, your being, and your body. She sheds light on how identity and culture can serve as vehicles of empowerment, how experiences of belonging can germinate and take root post-diaspora.
