Nicolas de Staël. Peintures et dessins
Nicolas de Staël (1914-1955) a quitté la vie à l'âge de 41 ans après avoir mené la peinture à une incandescence inconnue jusqu'alors. On ne comprend pas ce peintre d'origine russe si l'on ne prend pas en compte la synthèse, unique dans l'art européen de son temps, entre le prisme pictural nordique et le prisme pictural byzantin méditerranéen. C'est la grille de lecture qui éclaire le regard de Jean-Claude Marcadé tout au long de cette monographie. L'auteur voit un lien essentiel entre l'énergie sublimée de la couleur dans l'icône et les unités colorées de nombreux tableaux de Nicolas de Staël, tout particulièrement dans l'ultime phase de sa création. L'iconique flamboie dans son authentique visée : l'au-delà de la représentation, la visibilité apparaissant au sein de l'invisibilité, venant à la naissance à travers elle. En d'autres termes : l'abstraction essentielle faisant se manifester, se révéler les objets et les êtres. Sans parler des " rouges staëliens dans leur sublime simplicité, ces rouges de toutes les nuances, des sourdes aux transparentes, des carmins, des cramoisis aux pourpres et aux vermillons, ces rouges ont la même énergie que dans la peinture d'icône orthodoxe ". Et pourtant, dans son art, Nicolas de Staël apparaît, à première vue, parmi les génies issus de l'Empire russe, comme le plus " français ". Ses premières abstractions sont, certes, pleines de violence, mais il saura se plier à la discipline française. On ne saurait cependant le réduire à ça : c'est l'apport capital de la lecture novatrice que nous propose Jean-Claude Marcadé ici que de restituer l'impact de Ravenne, de l'art roman et de la lumière de la Sicile dans l'art fulgurant de cet artiste qui est passé dans le ciel de la peinture tel une comète. Une iconographie exceptionnelle de près de 300 œuvres est réunie ici avec, pour la première fois, une présentation de l'œuvre graphique substantielle.

Nicolas de Staël, l'impossible Concert
Seul dans son atelier d'Antibes, face à la mer, Nicolas de Staël entame, le 14 mars 1955, une toile géante de 3,5 m sur 6 m : Le Concert. On y voit d'un côté, un piano à queue noir et, de l'autre, une contrebasse ocre, séparés par des partitions posées sur des pupitres. Mais ce qui frappe c'est le fond de la composition qui mange tout le tableau : un vermillon écarlate, comme un grand rideau de scène incandescent. Deux jours plus tard, Nicolas brûle quelques papiers, écrit trois lettres, monte sur la terrasse de son atelier et bascule dans le vide. Dans ce gigantesque tableau, dans ces deux instruments de musique les seuls visibles de cet orchestre, dans ce rouge de feu se trouve sans doute, enfouie, l'explication de son geste. Nicolas de Staël a quarante et un an lorsqu'il peint Le Concert. Après dix ans de souffrances et de privations, il connaît enfin, depuis quelques mois, un réel succès.

Ce rouge incandescent selon de Staël
Récit mêlant romanesque et vérités historiques. Un tableau raconté par une auteure. Le rouge est là, vibrant comme une mer où flottent les instruments. On s'y noie, on s'y perd. Le Concert, oeuvre ultime de Nicolas de Staël, inachevée, ne cède rien de son mystère. L'oeuvre détonne, étonne, par sa taille, par son style, par ce rouge incandescent qui fascine. Pourquoi ce rouge ? Pourquoi ce retour au figuratif ? Pourquoi, comment, un homme dans la force de l'âge, au sommet de sa gloire choisit-il de mettre fin à ses jours ? D'un bout à l'autre de sa vie, du petit prince de Saint Pétersbourg fuyant la violence de la révolution russe aux rives lumineuses de la Méditerranée ; de l'enfant orphelin au peintre fou d'amour, De Staël questionne. Assoiffé d'absolu, tendu toujours vers la perfection de son art, il a vécu passionnément, désespérément, allant venant d'un lieu à l'autre, d'une femme à l'autre, pour finir sa vie sur ce rouge chavirant. A Morbid Democracy. Old and New Populisms
The crisis of democracy in Europe and the inability of the political parties and élites to adequately meet the challenges of globalisation exposes the increasingly fragmented middle classes to the temptations of Euroscepticism, and, in some cases, xenophobia. This appears to be a portrait of contemporary reality, but the current crisis has deep roots. The Spanish thinker José Ortega y Gasset described the pathologies of the mass man and of the nascent democratic system as far back as the beginning of the twentieth century, in a significant text entitled Una democracia morbosa, which appears to foreshadow the present state of affairs. The crisis of the average man, the degradation and devaluation of culture appear to be the distinctive traits of the new, post-ideological democracy of our times, known as "audience democracy". The political parties, faced with this profound crisis, in some cases seek dangerous shortcuts through demagogic and rhetorical use of the term "people", while the charismatic figure of the leader gains in prestige as a reference model. Resentment, caused by lack of representation of the just demands of the citizens, can turn to anger and destabilise the institutions of democracy. There is therefore an urgent need for an inclusive Europe with a renewed welfare system, based around the citizenry and not the masses.

A multitude of Sins. Richard Ford
A sequel to Rock Springs and Women with Men, the collection of short stories entitled A Multitude of Sins was published in 2001 and immediately achieved worldwide recognition. If this series of ten short stories seems to feature adultery, it would be a major mistake to believe that the stories can be reduced to what is actually a side issue or a pretext to something else, sometimes of much greater importance. As often with great writers, Richard Ford tackles several other topics along with the sin of unfaithfulness which is a base camp from which to go further up into the knowledge of human deficiency, lack and want. Pondering these sins, Richard Ford lays them all bare while often unveiling the issue of the story right from the beginning, instead of cautiously preserving it as a last chance literary trick to pull it off at the fast moment. Showing insight through observation, his writing is deceptive in as much as it seems natural and easygoing when it requires close analysis and several successive readings to yield up its literary and humane secrets. The comparison some critics have made to Chekhov is not overblown and Agregation students, certainly among the most perceptive readers in the world, should naturally enjoy both reading and studying A Multitude of Sins, pleasure and scholarship being complementary, not antagonistic. The exclusive interview of Richard Ford at the end of the book will certainly be appreciated by Agregation students, who will thus be able to finish off their knowledge of Ford's works.

«Phädon», or «On the Immortality of the Soul»
This is the first modern translation of Moses Mendelssohn's classic work of 1767, the Phädon. It includes Mendelssohn's own introduction and appendix, as well as footnotes and explanatory introduction by David Shavin. (Charles Cullen's translation of 1789 is the only other extant translation.) The "modern Socrates" of the German classical period, Mendelssohn has created a beautiful translation and elaboration of Plato's Phädo led to a revolution in thought, and a subsequent renaissance in Germany. The debt of the German classical period to ancient Greece is embodied in Mendelssohn's Phädon, as is the promise of the American Revolution. The translation and accompanying notes recapture Mendelssohn's unique marriage of depth of thought and breadth of appeal.

Que ce qu'on appelle aujourd'hui le Béti est constitué d'un peuple parti du plateau de l'Adamaoua et dans leur marche à travers la nature sauvage, ont pressé et brisé les arbustes pour marquer leur itinéraire, passant par Bati ou Pehtih par Batibo ou Petibôh jusqu'au Sud du Cameroun et même jusqu'en Afrique du Sud. Que les camerounais ne doivent pas par cette manipulation se détruire et détruire leur pays ; car ils sont un même peuple avec des chefs de groupes différents.

Nicolas de Staël, un automne, un hiver
Cet ouvrage est intitulé Nicolas de Staël, un automne, un hiver car il présente le dernier ensemble de peintures et d'œuvres sur papier réalisé à Antibes par l'artiste entre octobre 1954 et le 16 mars 1955, date de son suicide. Il a accompagné une exposition organisée dans le musée d'Antibes en 2005 mais a été conçu comme un ouvrage à part entière. Il met en lumière ces quelques mois en documentant le plus possible le séjour de l'artiste à Antibes. Des essais de Daniel Abadie qui propose de " revoir " De Staël aujourd'hui, de Federico Nicolao qui soumet une réévaluation du rapport abstraction/figuration de l'œuvre ultime de l'artiste, la correspondance de Nicolas de Staël, un texte de Valentine Marcadé sur l'œuvre de Nicolas de Staël, inédit en français, et commenté par Jean-Claude Marcadé, un texte de John Richardson inédit en français, quelques pages souvenirs d'Anne de Staël cernent de plus près l'ultime explosion de couleurs que connaît l'art de Nicolas de Staël à la veille de sa mort, en dépit de sa difficulté à se réaliser dans sa peinture. 147 tableaux et de nombreuses œuvres sur papier ont vu ainsi le jour en moins de cinq mois, à Antibes, à deux pas du musée qui lui a consacré cet hommage. La correspondance de Nicolas de Staël à partir de l'été 1954, une biographie et une bibliographie sélective complètent l'ouvrage.

Polish Psychological Verbs at the Lexicon-Syntax Interface in Cross-linguistic Perspective
This book is a comparative study of Polish psychological verbs. The analysis concentrates on the lexicon-syntax interface of psych verbs, and constitutes an argument in favour of its strong dependence on event structure. The aim of this study is to show that the class of Polish psych verbs, as in many other languages, is not uniform. The analysed subclasses are differentiated on the basis of their causation and stativity. The marriage of those semantic traits and their structural representation is possible only if it is performed via event structure configuration, a layer which appears to underlie the conceptualisation of events.

Moi, Pierre Seel, déporté homosexuel. Récit
C'est une voix devenue blanche qu'on entend ici. Pierre Seel se souvient : la déportation dans les camps nazis, la torture et l'humiliation, puis l'enrôlement forcé -comme Alsacien- dans l'armée allemande, le front de l'Est, l'évasion et la capture par les Russes.
Mais il se souvient de son retour de guerre : le mur de réprobation dressé devant lui, l'homosexualité inavouable, la décision de mener une existence " comme les autres ", le mariage et la vie réglée.
Qu'aura-t-il fallu pour que, un beau jour d'avril 1982, il choisisse de briser cette apparence pour que son long silence devienne un long combat pour la vérité ? Dans ce récit de vie rompue, on lira l'aveu poignant d'un homme qui voudrait, simplement, que justice lui soit enfin rendue.
