In his film Hear Them Speak, created with Claudine Nougaret, Raymond Depardon gives a voice to those who wish to remain on their land but are threatened with exile. Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Mark Hansen, Laura Kurgan, and Ben Rubin give form to Paul Virilio's concepts in six dynamic maps which examine new trends in contemporary human movement due to environmental, political, and economic factors. The texts included here, published for the first time in the catalog Native Land, Stop Eject (Prix Nomad's 2009), offer a chance to explore the themes raised in the exhibition. Accompanied by exhibition views, they incite contemplation on the meaning of sedentariness and nomadism, as well as related questions of identity.

L'inspecteur principal Massimo Di Giacomo souleva le drap qui recouvrait la victime et le visage figé de Roger Waters apparût. Un visage si familier que le fonctionnaire de police sursauta. Ces traits, Massimo avait eu le loisir de les voir vieillir au gré des albums que l'ancien bassiste des Pink Floyd avait sortis au cours de sa carrière. L'inspecteur s'agenouilla et se mit à caresser la chevelure grise et abondante du musicien. "Qui peut bien vouloir la mort d'un tel génie ? " s'interrogea-t-il. Il contempla la place Garibaldi à présent bondée et frissonna à l'idée que l'assassin puisse être un de ses compatriotes. L'inspecteur principal se sentit coupable et se dit que Roger Waters aurait été plus en sécurité à rester derrière son mur. Alors qu'il vient honorer la mémoire de son papa décédé héroïquement sur la plage d'Anzio en 1944, Roger Waters, ancien bassiste et leader du groupe Pink Floyd, est sauvagement assassiné dans le paisible village italien de Moletta. L'inspecteur principal Massimo Di Giacomo est chargé de mener l'enquête. Pour parvenir à ses fins, l'aide d'Antoine Schiavon, un ami d'enfance et critique musical au Rolling Stones Magazine, lui sera très précieuse. A travers Comfortably Numb ou meurtre à Moletta, Tony Manto retrace le destin tragique de Roger Waters, un des plus grands auteurs-compositeurs du XXème siècle et concepteur de chefs d'oeuvres tels que Dark side of the moon, Wish you were here ou The Wall. Ce récit est aussi l'évocation de la vie d'un artiste fragile et engagé. Une vie jalonnée de drames personnels, de frustrations et de gloire planétaire, et qui s'achève alors que le musicien avait surmonté ses démons les plus enfuis.

Charles Darwin's Zoology Notes & Specimen Lists from H.M.S. Beagle
Two long sets of scientific notes were made by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. Those transcribed here are concerned with natural history, and although in 1839 he drew on them quite extensively in writing his famous " Journal of Researches ", neither they nor his geology notes have previously been published. He was a superb observer, and recorded vividly and accurately his first impressions of the appearance and behaviour of the wide range of animals, from ants to ostriches, encountered during his travels. Often he performed little experiments on the creatures that he captured, and he was never happy until he had exhaustively explored the why and wherefore of every one of his observations. During the long periods on board ship, he carried out a thorough analysis of hitherto unrecognised features of the internal anatomy of a variety of marine invertebrates, and made elegant pencil drawings of them under his dissecting microscope. The volume also includes his lists of 1 500 specimens preserved in Spirits of Wine, and some 3 500 not in Spirits, with impeccably accurate cross references to the main notes. Although his notes were made strictly for his own use, and were often highly technical, they were well written throughout, and contain many highly readable passages. Only towards the very end of the voyage were his first doubts about the immutability of species consciously pressed, but here are to be found the first seeds of his theory of evolution, and of the important new fields of behavioural and ecological study of which he was one of the principal founders.

After The Last Ship
After the Last Ship illustrates the author's own history, as well as its connection to the history of other women and children who left India and made the journey across the Kala Pani, the Indian Ocean, and lived as migrants in other countries. In this book the author brings greater understanding of how subjectivities are shaped through embodied experiences of ‘mixed race'. She bears witness to the oppressive policies of the fascist government in Portugal in the 1960's and 1970's and the effects of displacement and exile, by reconstructing her own passage from India to Mozambique and finally to Australia. Further, the author shows the devastation that labels such as ‘half-caste', ‘canecos' and ‘monhe' can cause, when they eat at your flesh, your being, and your body. She sheds light on how identity and culture can serve as vehicles of empowerment, how experiences of belonging can germinate and take root post-diaspora.

Beginning in the 1990s large numbers of women from Mainland China and Southeast Asia married men in Taiwan. They now number over 400,000, warranting some to call them "Taiwan's Fifth Ethnic Group". This book argues that the rise of these marriages is a gendered and relational phenomenon, linked to the forces of globalization. Traditional ideas of marriage, such as the belief that a woman "marries out" of her natal family to be dependent upon her husband and his family, and the idea that a man should "marry down" to a woman of a lesser social and economic status, have not kept pace with changes in women's educational and career opportunities. How these relationships are formed, how they impact gendered understandings of women and men, how families are constituted and relationships developed, and how they affect the children of these families and their education, are the issues explored in this book. It breaks new ground in our understanding of transnational and cross-border marriages by looking at the long-term effects of such marriages on communities, families, and individuals.

Activation Policies for the Unemployed, the Right to Work and the Duty to Work
Since the 1990s and the 2000s, Western social protection systems have experienced a turn towards activation. This turn consists of the multiplication of measures aimed at bringing those who are unemployed closer to participation in the labour market. These measures often induce a strengthening of the conditions that must be met in order to receive social benefits. It is in this well known context that the authors gathered in this book decided to take a closer look at the relationship between activation policies for the unemployed and the right and the duty to work. If activation measures are likely to increase transitions towards the labour market, we can also make the assumption that they may, particularly when they are marked with the seal of coercion, hinder or dramatically reduce the right to freely chosen work. In such circumstances, the realisation of the "right to work", which is often stated to be the aim of those who promote activation, tends in practice to be reduced to an increasing pressure being exerted on the unemployed. In this case, isn't it actually the duty to work that is particularly reinforced ? After an historical and philosophical perspective on the issue, this assumption is confronted with the developments observed in the United States and in France, and then with the guidelines laid down in international human rights instruments. What follows is a discussion of two alternatives to the dominant activation model : the basic income guarantee and the employment guarantee.

The rest of the story
Emma Saylor regarde son père danser sur la piste, un peu désabusée : elle assiste à son mariage avec une femme adorable, qui leur permet d'échapper enfin aux difficultés qui les poursuivent depuis la mort de sa mère, cinq ans plus tôt, d'une overdose. La jeune fille ne sait pas grand-chose de ce qui est vraiment arrivé. Et, pour pouvoir aller de l'avant, elle aussi, elle aimerait bien connaître... la fin de l'histoire. Or elle n'a plus revu sa grand-mère maternelle ou ses cousins depuis un séjour chez eux quand elle était toute petite. Mais le destin va lui donner un coup de pouce : pendant la lune de miel de son père, elle doit justement passer un mois au bord du lac où vit cette énigmatique famille. Car si, pour son père, elle est Emma, aux yeux de sa mère, de ses cousins et des amis d'autrefois, en revanche, elle était quelqu'un d'autre - elle était la petite Saylor, même si ce ne fut que le temps d'un été. Et c'est ce passé enfoui qu'elle va redécouvrir comme un trésor. Un parquet qui grince sous ses pas, une odeur familière... Elle qui ne se rappelle pas même le visage de sa grand-mère se rend compte qu'elle connaît cet endroit. Elle retrouve sa cousine, qui joue avec le feu comme la mère d'Emma avant elle, et Roo, le garçon dont elle était inséparable enfant. Tel un détective, elle va remonter le temps en arrière, pour découvrir non seulement qui elle est, mais aussi quelle adolescente a été sa mère. Car avant de tomber amoureuse d'un fils de famille privilégié, celle-ci a perdu son meilleur ami dans un étrange accident de bateau à moteur... Un roman de Sarah Dessen n'est jamais, jamais une déception. La reine de la fiction young adult observe les mouvements du coeur d'un adolescente dans la tourmente avec une justesse stupéfiante - ce qui fait dire à tout le milieu littéraire aux Etats-Unis qu'elle est, ni plus ni moins, une rock star. Emotion à fleur de peau et regard acéré sur les choses : venez savourer en sa compagnie une gourmandise à nulle autre pareille...

Richard Hell. The original punk
Ce livre est un hommage rendu à un homme, à un artiste sans qui rien ne se serait peut-être passé ou alors pas du tout de la même manière... Si l'on considère que l'émergence du punk a révolutionné le monde de la musique fin 76, début 77, il n'est pas illogique de vouloir retrouver la trace des débuts de ce mouvement artistique (certes un peu brut de décoffrage) et de ses initiateurs. Car, comme dans toutes les révolutions, il a forcément dû y avoir, au départ, une première personne à se lever pour lancer les premiers slogans, pour allumer la première mèche, pour entraîner les autres à sa suite. Quitte à être totalement dépassée par les événements ou l'ampleur que ceux-ci prendraient par la suite, quitte aussi à être ensuite oubliée par l'histoire. Voici l'histoire du punk originel, celui qui fut à l'origine des premiers pas de ce mouvement avec Television, le groupe formé par Hell avec son ami Tom Verlaine, sans conteste la formation qui marque la naissance de la nouvelle scène newyorkaise, bien avant l'apparition des Ramones ou l'avènement de Patti Smith, longtemps même avant que l'on ne commence à parler des Sex Pistols. Assez curieusement, ce premier punk était surtout un artiste, un poète bien plus intéressé par la portée des mots que par celle des notes. Un nihiliste, un rebelle sans cause qui, tel un ver(s) dans le fruit, s'abreuvait du désoeuvrement de la société et de la grande ville qu'il avait rejointe seul dès son plus jeune âge. Un homme qui restera attaché à l'écriture bien après avoir renoncé aux turpitudes du monde du rock, non sans en avoir largement testé tous les travers. Un artiste qui sera adoubé par ses pairs mais dont les excès et une certaine forme d'indolence opiacée l'empêcheront d'obtenir la place qu'il méritait au panthéon du mouvement punk. Lui qui avait lancé Television et lui avait donné son côté sauvage, lui qui avait formé the Heartbreakers avec Johnny Thunders (très certainement le meilleur groupe issu de ce mouvement), lui qui avait été un des premiers à sortir un single avec the Voidoids, fin 1976, juste avant la déferlante des jeunes groupes britanniques, lui qui avait si bien capté l'état d'esprit de l'époque en parlant de Blank Generation était aussi un incroyable romantique, capable d'écrire une chanson d'amour - "(I Could Live You In) Another World" - en l'honneur d'une jeune Française, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, dont il s'était follement épris. Un poète amoureux à la base du mouvement punk, avouez qu'il fallait oser. Voilà qui devrait éveiller votre curiosité, vous faire prendre conscience qu'il s'agissait bien d'un mouvement artistique et vous donner envie d'en savoir plus sur cet homme complexe qui se lassa vite de la petitesse du monde du rock et jeta sa carrière aux orties dès que la chose ne l'amusa plus. Une attitude typiquement punk...

Just as I finished grabbing it, a sharp pain suddenly was erupting on the inside edge of my lair ! Simultaneously, a tension as unbearable as it was horrifying blocked me trying to pull me towards the surface. The kanakäs had just intercepted me through this lethal decoy ! So, with all my mass and was arching my body with all my strength in the opposite direction, I was regained some slack on this terribly resistant link, feeling all the mass of the platform preventing me from probing like the dontokä before. However, I was determined to show them which of us would be most worthy of remaining in the Incompressible, when with a devastating lateral movement, I severed with a sharp blow the lethal and imperceptible tether ! By this counter blow, I was as if immediately ejected : the perfidious artifact still embedded in my lair lying painfully like a relic of this ubiquitous creature of the System.

Living in Two Worlds
This is a study of Singapore pastors' worldview & understanding of the epidemiology, symptomatology and management of possession behaviour. The pastors' accounts are compared with those from the scientific disciplines, and convergences and divergences noted. Factors shaping both the pastors' and the scientific discourses are examined. The pastors are shown to respond to competing scientific paradigms by reinforcing their two-worlds worldview. They either live mainly in the other world, or in each world at a time, or between the two worlds. Based on theological reflection focusing on epistemology, theodicy & cosmology, the author shows that the paradigm of living in both worlds simultaneously is the most appropriate pastoral response. The theological vision of the coexisting worlds and the pastoral task of unmasking and resisting evil in all its varieties and depths are then discussed.

Ancient Greek by Its Translators
When not familiar with the language itself, most readers over the centuries have had access to the ancient Greek texts only or mostly through (Latin or vernacular) translations. Such an approach is not only indirect and mediated, but also distorted and even impoverishing : meaning then prevails over the linguistic form and substance of the texts themselves. What do later or modern readers read when they read translated texts written in an ancient so-called dead language ? They read a given meaning - sometimes unfaithful, often inaccurate - dictated by a genuine understanding, the blind continuation of tradition, or an untold hidden intention. The complex range of significances conveyed by meaning simultaneously reflects the time and space (called synchrony) of when and where a text has been translated, the historical learning and linguistic skills of the translators, as well as their ideas and style. As a contribution to the perennial debate about translation (mere literary transliteration vs. creative transposition), this volume aims at analyzing some striking cases of various (literary or not) texts translated from ancient Greek showing how much for the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries aesthetics and ideology matter as much as - and often even more than - rigorous philology.
