Widows in Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Britain
This volume provides a comprehensive study of widowhood in Medieval Britain based on literary and historical sources from the seventh to the fifteenth centuries. The book is divided into two parts : the first deals with the Anglo-Saxon period, the second with the Medieval period. Because widows shared certain preoccupations specific to their status, the two parts deal with similar topics : the fundamental role played by the Church in the doctrine of marriage, and the dominant male discourse about widows. Widows had a specific legal status : special laws affected their lives and their relationships with their children and other relatives. Much attention is consequently devoted to family structures and to the legal and social aspects of inheritance. The volume also explores the various options widowhood offered and the highly debated degree of independence widows had in their life choices.

On the Border - The Otherness of God and the Multiplicity of the Religions
The Christian theology of religions at present faces a crisis. What precisely is the task of the theology of religions ? Does it merely consist in interpreting the non-Christian religions as steps, phases or contributions in the light of Christianity ? Has one from the theological side conceded the maximum to the non-Christian religions by acknowledging them as anonymous Christianity (Karl Rahner)? This study is an exploration on how one shall liberate the religion of the other from anonymity : how one shall leave the other with his/her own name. The model of thought employed in this study is gained through an analysis of the intercultural process of understanding, explained with instances from Africa and South America.

«In the Interest of Democracy»
Until recently, there has been little concrete evidence linking the American Federation of Labor (AFL) to the U.S. government's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In this book, based upon recently opened archival collections, the author investigates this controversial and complicated early Cold War relationship. Contrary to arguments that the AFL's international activities were entirely controlled by the U.S. government to the detriment of the independent international labor movement, or that the AFL acted on its own without government involvement to foster legitimate anti-communist trade unions, the author's examination of the archival sources reveals that the AFL and the CIA made an alliance of convenience based upon common goals and ideologies, which dissolved when the balance of power shifted away from the AFL and into the hands of the CIA. In addition to tracing the complicated historical threads which resulted in an apparently unlikely relationship, three specific examples of how the AFL worked with the CIA are investigated in this book : the development of the anti-communist trade union federation Force Ouvrière in France ; the AFL campaign against the Soviet Union's use of "slave labor" at the UN ; and labor's role in the activities of the National Committee for a Free Europe, including Radio Free Europe and the Free Trade Union Center in Exile.

She’s Leaving Home
This collection of essays, written by scholars from all over Europe, explores the cultural meanings of women leaving home. Although all the chapters analyse writings in English, the volume aims to put the narrative element of home-leaving into a European context by investigating travel in various directions : from England to somewhere abroad, from the (former) colonies to the (former) imperial centre or simply within a psychic space. The female figures discussed in the volume leave home for various reasons – to go into exile, to challenge orthodox conceptions of femininity, to travel for pleasure or out of curiosity – but ultimately each of them has to face questions of the definitions of home, belonging and otherness. Consequently, the essays in this collection focus on how the cross-cultural encounters implicated in discourses of race, gender, nation and religion affect female identity. The ‘protagonists' of these narratives range from mythical heroines to early modern Protestant refugees to fictitious and historical figures from the past 200 years. The discussion throughout is informed by contemporary theories of gender, literary and cultural studies.

Marriage in the Christian and Igbo Traditional Context: Towards an Inculturation
Traditional marriage and Christian marriage rites presently exist as two distinct ceremonies in some parts of Africa. Is there no way of bringing the two together to avoid any form of duplication or multiplication of rite ? More so because the Church has always implicitly recognised matrimonial institution as a cultural product. The answer to the above question is located in the whole issue of inculturation. A process that successfully flourished in the Western civilisation and consequently influenced the teaching of the Church on marriage. The answer to our question seeks to establish a marriage rite where couples will genuinely experience the happy marriage between culture and Church. A marriage rite that will fulfil both the traditional and Christian demands.

Depuis plus d'un demi-siècle, Annie Leibovitz est l'auteur de photos qui décrivent la culture de leur époque. Ses portraits de politiciens, d'artistes, d'athlètes, d'entrepreneurs et de têtes couronnées composent une galerie de notre temps, imprimée dans notre conscience collective autant par la singularité de ses sujets que par le style inimitable de Leibovitz. Catalogue de l'installation présentée par la Fondation LUMA, à Arles, Annie Leibovitz : The Early Years, 1970-1983 revient sur les origines de Leibovitz. Il commence par une révélation artistique : un cliché pris sur le vif, celui qui lui a donné à penser qu'elle pourrait étudier la photographie plutôt que la peinture au San Francisco Art Institute. Ce recueil, composé personnellement et avec le plus grand soin par Leibovitz, présente ensuite des planches contact et des Polaroid qui racontent de façon saisissantune époque charnière et la formation d'une jeune artiste. Les séries de photos presque documentaires que Leibovitz publie dans Rolling Stone, où elle commence à travailler alors qu'elle est encore étudiante, rendent compte d'événements politiques, culturels et contre-culturels aussi exaltants que les manifestations contre la guerre du Vietnam, le lancement d'Apollo 17, la campagne présidentielle de 1972, la démission de Richard Nixon en 1974 ou la tournée des Rolling Stones en 1975. A cette période, comme encore aujourd'hui, Leibovitz gagne la confiance des célébrités et des puissants, si bien que les pages du livre s'animent de visages connus, parmi lesquels Mohammed Ali, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ken Kesey, Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Didion et Debbie Harry qui côtoient John Lennon et Yoko Ono, immortalisés dans une étreinte devenue iconique, quelques heures à peine avant l'assassinat de Lennon. D'un bout à l'autre du livre, portraits et reportages sont ponctués d'images de voitures, de ses trajets et même d'une série sur les patrouilleurs d'autoroutes en Californie. A bien des égards, il s'agit d'une célébration de la vie nomade, avec ses cadences effrénées, ses rencontres impromptues, ses fenêtres méditatives. Elles forment aussi des archives précieuses témoignant d'une époque révolue et montrant la maturation d'une jeune photographe au sein d'une culture elle-même en transition.

Andrea Sacchi and Cardinal del Monte. The Rediscovered Frescoes in the Palazzo di Ripetta in Rome
This fascinating and beautifully illustrated book presents for the first time the rediscovered frescoes painted by Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661) for the loggia of Cardinal del Monte's Roman palace near via di Ripetta, Rome. Considered lost by generations of scholars, Andrea Sacchi's fresco cycle has survived in a private apartment in Rome. Largely unpublished and rarely mentioned in recent literature, the frescoes underwent a revelatory restoration in 2010-11. For the past three years, the author was granted exclusive access to study them thoroughly - resulting in this monograph. Accompanied by beautiful and full photographic documentation, this study aims to compare the painted images with the detailed description given by the biographer Giovan Pietro Bellori ; to shed light on the iconography and style, above all with respect to the sources used ; and to integrate this key commission within Sacchi's early career. The cycle's iconography is explored with careful verification of early sources that now allows us to resolve some particularly complex problems of interpretation - above all those relating to alchemy. Cardinal del Monte's Palazzo di Ripetta housed a fully equipped pharmacological laboratory. Research on this cycle of frescoes has also made it possible to discover new archival evidence regarding Sacchi's date and place of birth.

Frank Auerbach. The Charcoal Heads
Accompanying an exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery, London, Frank Auerbach : The Charcoal Heads presents a remarkable series of hauntingly beautiful largescale drawings by the artist. The catalogue includes a new piece of writing on one of the drawings from critically acclaimed novelist Colm Tóibín. This catalogue explores one of Frank Auerbach's most remarkable bodies of work - a series of large-scale portrait heads made in charcoal, produced during his early years as a young artist in postwar London. Auerbach (b. 1931) spent months on each drawing, working and reworking them during numerous sessions with his sitters. This prolonged and vigorous process of creation is evident in the finished drawings, which are richly textured and layered. Auerbach would sometimes even break through the paper and patch it up before carrying on. His heads thus emerge from the darkness of the charcoal with burning vitality, born of an artistic as well as a physical struggle with the medium. The process of repeated creation and destruction, of which these images bear the visible scars, speaks profoundly of their times, as people rebuilt their lives after the ruination and upending of the war. The exhibition will be the first time Auerbach's extraordinary drawings, made in the 1950s and early 1960s, have been brought together as a comprehensive group. They will be shown together with a selection of paintings he made of the same sitters ; for the artist, painting and drawing have always been deeply entwined. The accompanying catalogue - by Deputy Head of The Courtauld Gallery, Barnaby Wright, and with an essay by one of the greatest contemporary voices in the English language, Colm Tóibín - is the first publication to explore in depth this magnificent series. Tóibín spent several hours one afternoon in front of Auerbach's Self-Portrait (1958), which features on the front cover of the book, looking closely and taking notes. His essay is an account of his experience and offers new insights into the work and the nature of self-portaiture.

Fuseli and the Modern Woman. Fashion, Fantasy, Fetishism
This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition devoted to a fascinating group of drawings by the Anglo-Swiss Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), one of eighteenth-century Europe's most idiosyncratic, original and controversial artists. Best known for his notoriously provocative painting The Nightmare, Fuseli energetically cultivated a reputation for eccentricity, with vividly stylised images of supernatural creatures, muscle-bound heroes, and damsels in distress. While these convinced some viewers of the greatness of his genius, others dismissed him as a charlatan, or as completely mad. Fuseli's contemporaries might have thought him even crazier had they been aware that in private he harboured an obsessive preoccupation with the figure of the modern woman, which he pursued almost exclusively in his drawings. Where one might have expected idealised bodies with the grace and proportions of classical statues, here instead we encounter figures whose anatomies have been shaped by stiff bodices, waistbands, puffed sleeves, and pointed shoes, and whose heads are crowned by coiffures of the most bizarre and complicated sort. Often based on the artist's wife Sophia Rawlins, the women who populate Fuseli's graphic work tend to adopt brazenly aggressive attitudes, either fixing their gaze directly on the viewer or ignoring our presence altogether. Usually they appear on their own, in isolation on the page ; sometimes they are grouped together to form disturbing narratives, erotic fantasies that may be mysterious, vaguely menacing, or overtly transgressive, but where women always play a dominant role. Among the many intriguing questions raised by these works is the extent to which his wife Sophia was actively involved in fashioning her appearance for her own pleasure, as well as for the benefit of her husband. By bringing together more than fifty of these studies (roughly a third of the known total), The Courtauld Gallery will give audiences an unprecedented opportunity to see one of the finest Romantic-period draughtsmen at his most innovative and exciting. Visitors to the show and readers of the lavishly illustrated catalogue will further be invited to consider how Fuseli's drawings of women, as products of the turbulent aftermath of the American and French Revolutions, speak to concerns about gender and sexuality that have never been more relevant than they are today. The exhibition showcases drawings brought together from international collections, including the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand, and from other European and North American institutions.

The adventures of Guille and Belinda
Ce livre présente le retour d'Alessandra Sanguinetti dans l'Argentine rurale pour poursuivre sa collaboration intime avec Belinda et Guillermina, deux cousines qui, en tant que filles, ont été les sujets du premier livre de sa série en cours, Les Aventures de Guille et Belinda et la signification énigmatique de leur Rêves. Dans ce deuxième volume, L'illusion d'un été éternel, nous suivons Guillermina et Belinda de 14 à 24 ans dans la négociation du territoire fluide entre l'adolescence et le jeune adulte. Toujours entouré par les animaux et les milieux ruraux de leur enfance, Everlasting Summer dépeint la vie quotidienne des deux cousins alors qu'ils vivent l'amour, la grossesse et la maternité des jeunes - tout cela, peut-être inévitablement, se traduit par une indépendance toujours croissante de leurs familles. De même, nous pouvons sentir un changement dans la relation de Sanguinetti avec les cousines et le travail qu'elles font : de collaborateurs d'enfance insulaires à trois femmes dont la vie se ramifie dans des directions différentes. Bien que le passage du temps soit l'une des tensions les plus palpables à l'oeuvre dans ces photographies, An Everlasting Summer approfondit l'exploration par Sanguinetti du langage universel et intemporel de l'intimité et de l'amitié féminines.

Although it is traditional to see a certain kind of "realism" as the essence of fiction, in practice novels of course offer not a simple reproduction of experience but a throughgoing organization of it. The novel is, after all, a bourgeois genre and it reflects that bourgeois view of life according to which the world is there merely to be dominated and controlled by man. This study examines both Thackeray's early fiction, in which both the novel form and the manipulative society to which it belongs are attacked, and his later works, in which they are defended, and tries to determine the reasons for this change.

Le luxe en Gaule. Textes en français et anglais
Vaisselle précieuse, bijoux en or et pierres gravées, décor des demeures, vins et produits gastronomiques recherchés, parure monumentale des villes et mobilier luxueux des tombes, toutes ces manifestations du luxe se caractérisent par des matériaux coûteux, rares, travaillés par des artisans de talent. Leur possession relève de l'ostentation et du superflu. Pourtant, le seuil à partir duquel un artefact entre dans la catégorie du luxe n'est pas toujours clair : il change selon l'époque, le lieu, l'échelle. Le luxe de la parure individuelle, de la maison privée, de groupes professionnels, du prince ou de la cité ne s'expriment pas de la même manière et n'ont pas la même vocation. Cet ouvrage rassemble 14 communications d'un colloque qui s'est tenu au musée de l'Arles antique en 2017, autour de l'exposition sur le Luxe antique et le trésor de Berthouville. Rethinking East-Central Europe: family systems and co-residence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
This book reconstructs fundamental aspects of family organization across historical Poland-Lithuania, one of the largest political entities in early modern Europe. Using a plethora of quantitative measurements and demographic microsimulation, the author captures and elucidates the complex patterns of leaving home and life-cycle service, marriage and household formation, along with domestic group structures and living arrangements among different subpopulations of Poland-Lithuania, highlighting a variety of ways in which these patterns were nested in their respective local and regional contexts. By showing that at the end of the 18th century at least three distinct family systems existed in the Polish-Lithuanian territories, Szo ? tysek challenges a number of orthodoxies in the ‘master narratives' on the European geography of family forms of F. Le Play, J. Hajnal, P. Laslett, and their followers. Volume two of the book contains an extensive bibliography along with a thorough archival documentation of the census-like microdata used in the book, and provides detailed information on their quality and further technicalities pertaining to data analysis.

Dieu, le souverain et la cour. Stratégies et rituels de légitimation du pouvoir impérial et royal dans l’Antiquité tardive et au haut Moyen Âge
Durant l'Antiquité tardive, la nature du pouvoir impérial romain fut profondément bouleversée sous l'effet de deux phénomènes majeurs : la montée en puissance du christianisme, qui devint religion d'Etat au début du IVe siècle, et l'apparition d'un monde multipolaire en raison de l'émergence de royaumes progressivement reconnus comme autant d'interlocuteurs politiques. Ces questions se firent d'autant plus pressantes qu'en dépit de l'affirmation du caractère monarchique du pouvoir impérial depuis le milieu du IIIe siècle, aucune règle successorale institutionnelle n'existait, obligeant les empereurs à susciter en permanence un consensus social pour affirmer leur autorité. Pour cela, ils se mirent en scène dans des cérémonies qui, depuis leur investiture jusqu'à leurs funérailles, avaient pour but d'asseoir leur légitimité et celle de leur successeur. Quant aux royaumes germaniques établis sur le sol de l'Empire, ils prirent corps dans leurs interactions avec le pouvoir impérial et avec les aristocraties romaines locales puis firent, à leur tour, du christianisme un moyen de renforcer leur légitimité. Cette étude examine les ressorts sur lesquels a reposé le pouvoir dans l'Empire romain en Occident aussi bien qu'en Orient et dans les premiers royaumes germaniques de la fin du IIIe siècle à la fin du VIe siècle. Quel rôle jouèrent la mise en scène des rituels politiques et les discours produits par le pouvoir lui-même ? Comment la christianisation du pouvoir impérial et royal se manifesta-t-elle ? Quel fut le rôle de la cour dans les stratégies de légitimation ? Comment les rois inscrivirent-ils leur pouvoir dans des cadres symboliques inspirés des cours impériales et de celles des gouverneurs des provinces ? En s'efforçant de répondre à ces questions, ce livre se propose d'analyser les transformations du pouvoir impérial romain dans l'Antiquité tardive et à l'époque protobyzantine ainsi que les expérimentations politiques à partir desquelles se construisit le modèle de la royauté médiévale en Europe occidentale. During Late Antiquity, the nature of Roman imperial power was profoundly reshaped by two major phenomena : the rise of Christianity, which became the state religion at the beginning of the fourth century, and the development of a multipolar world with the emergence of kingdoms progressively recognized as political interlocutors. These issues became particularly pressing because, despite the affirmation of the monarchical character of imperial power since the middle of the third century, no institutional rule of succession had been established, requiring the emperors to constantly build a social consensus in order to assert their authority. To do this, they put themselves on stage in ceremonies which, from their investiture to their funeral, were intended to establish their legitimacy and that of their successor. At the same time, the Germanic kingdoms established on the soil of the Empire were shaped by their interactions with the imperial power and with the local Roman aristocracies and used Christianity as a way of reinforcing their legitimacy. This study examines the mechanisms on which power relied in the Roman Empire, both in the West and the East, as well as in the early Germanic kingdoms from the end of the third to the end of the sixth century. What role was played by the staging of political rituals and discourses produced by the power itself ? How did the Christianization of imperial and royal power manifest itself ? What was the role of the court in the strategies of legitimization ? How did the kings inscribe their power in symbolic frameworks inspired by the Imperial courts and those of the provincial governors ? To answer these questions, this book analyzes the transformations of Roman imperial power in Late Antiquity and the Early Byzantine period, as well as the political experiments from which the model of medieval kingship in Western Europe was constructed.
