The Rejection of the Humble Messianic King

Although the prominence of Matthew's anti-Jewish polemic has been widely recognized in recent years, curiously little attention has thus far been given to the contribution made by chapters 11 and 12 to this theme. Often dismissed as a loose compendium of controversy-stories, this narrative section actually displays a solid, thematic unity dealing with the tragic fact of Jesus'rejection by the covenant people, Israel. Matthew's usually thoughtful style is evident in these chapters as he proceeds in a quite independent manner to clarify the unexpectedly humble nature of the messianic mission, the consequences of its rejection and the identity of the true people of God.

The Connection between Base Structure and Linearization Restrictions in German and Dutch

Recently, generative linguists have been concentrating on underlying principles of grammar rather than dealing with the connection between surface data and base structure. This book is an attempt to establish that connection by writing a grammar of the German and Dutch sentence. Moreover, it stresses the value of the Topological Fields Theory as a "prefiguration" of later transformational analyses.

Self-Repairs in Learner Language

Repair is a characteristic of oral discourse. The ability to repair one's own discourse appropriately is a part of native speakers' communicative competence. This study investigates the repair behaviour of foreign language (L2) learners at different levels of oral proficiency. Two principal types of repair, code- and discourse-related, were distinguished. In the use of these, both quantitative and qualitative changes occur according to development of L2 learner proficiency. L2 learners also differ individually in their repair behaviour. Two main types of languages users were identified : safe-players and explorers. The study suggests repair to be related to other contextual factors in the discourse, such as errors, or lexical problems. Thus, in different contexts, use of repair may either enhance or impoverish communication.

A New Development Model - A New Communication Policy?

After the overthrow of the Somoza regime in July 1979 a political movement assumed power in Nicaragua whose approach to development was totally different from that of the previous dictatorship. Thus the question arises, how these changes affected the country's communication system. Main emphasis in this empirical study is on mass communication. Besides the structure of the communication system and its development, its interrelations with other subsystems of society - like politics, economy, and education - are also examined.

The book contains a selection of articles, forms, paragraphs and sections applicable in the case of ship arrest.

These five short stories by Evelyn Accad in bilingual format, which recount various forms of violence experienced by women in Lebanon, may be seen as portraits of women seeking to overcome obstacles and rebuild themselves. The characters here seek assistance in the form of tenderness, which may lead them to understanding and reconstructing the inner house of the self. This search is a narrative thread, allowing the reader to discover a country where family ties sometimes destroy, and sometimes aid in healing both mental and physical trauma. The thematicessenceof the work ispowerfully rendered by artist Monique Loubet.

Their different mediums, styles, and languages, including imaginary ones, show the endless potential and inspiration of turning letters into art. Each artist featured has a brief bio explaining their background and inspirations, examples of their artwork, and an original alphabet. The artists, from 20 countries, share alphabets in vibrant color and black and white, in clarity and in chaos, in pencil on paper and paint on walls. In our digital age, where screens and keyboards have taken over, this ancient art still thrives.

This volume is the eighth in the Transversales series published by a group of researchers of different nationalities on the topic of sociability in France and Britain during the Enlightenment. The research focuses on the extent to which a new model of sociability emerged in these nations during this period, and the similarities and differences between the ways this model developed on each side of the Channel. The present volume looks at the circulation of these national models along the lines of familial, friendship, trading, scholarly or diplomatic networks which all foster forms of sociability based on convivial exchanges and the sharing and transmission of knowledge. In a geographical area that now extends across Europe and towards its colonies, this book sheds light on modes of transfer, exchange, reappropriation and hybridisation through a series of case studies that highlight not only the transnational nature of these networks, but also individual trajectories.

Language and Transcendence

This study provides, in the notion of transcendence, a framework for interpreting Heidegger's thinking in regard to language, one of his major preoccupations. It both locates his thinking in its historical context, and, while still remaining faithful to it, frees it for discussion and evaluation in a horizon beyond Heidegger's own, by showing how heideggerian insights are crucial to the development of Karl-Otto Apel's linguistically-based transcendental philosophy. The full import of Heidegger's thinking for the central concerns and problems of philosophy is thus revealed by tracing how, in Apel's work, it is made both ethically relevant and capable of fruitful dialogue with Anglo-American philosophical discourse, represented by such thinkers as Wittgenstein and Peirce.

Gauguin. Edition en langue anglaise

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was one of the most formidable artists of the late nineteenth century, and one whose work was to have a profound influence on the development of art in the twentieth. He began as an Impressionist, but went on to develop a more two-dimensional, richly-coloured style in his constant search for a 'lost paradise' untouched by nineteenth-century civilization. Gauguin's romande and tragic life story is mirrored in the works in this outstanding anthology. Included are 48 full-page colour plates, not only of his best-known beautiful, atmospheric paintings of Tahiti in which Gauguin attempted to reconstruct the perfect life which he had failed to find in reality, but also of many powerful works which reflect the artist's contact with other early modern masters - Degas, Van Gogh, Cézanne. Sir Alan Bowness, who was Director of the Tate Gallery until 1988, is the author of the lively introductory essay which provides the background to the paintings, and art historian Lesley Stevenson has written an informative, clear commentary to accompany each colour plate.

The adventures of Guille and Belinda

Basic Physical Chemistry for the Atmospheric Sciences. 2nd edition

Modern studies of atmospheres, oceans, and Earth and planetary systems require a good knowledge of basic chemical principles. This book provides a clear, concise grounding in these principles. Undergraduate and graduate students with little formal training in chemistry can work through the chapters, and the numerous exercises, within this book before accessing more advanced texts in atmospheric chemistry, geochemistry, and the environmental sciences. Basic Physical Chemistry for the Atmospheric Sciences covers the fundamental concepts of chemical equilibria, chemical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, solution chemistry, acid and base chemistry, oxidation-reduction reactions, and photochemistry. This new edition has been updated and revised from the first edition. In a companion volume entitled Introduction to Atmospheric Chemistry (2000, Cambridge University Press) Peter Hobbs provides an introduction to atmospheric chemistry itself, including its applications to air pollution, acid rain, the ozone hole, and climate change. Together these two books provide on ideal introduction to atmospheric chemistry for a variety of disciplines.

The elbe cycle route

This guide describes the Elbe Cycle route which runs from the river's source in the Krkonose mountains on the Czech/Polish border to Cuxhaven, on the German North Sea coast. Possibly the easiest long-distance cycle route in Europe in terms of gradient, it visits a part of the continent that was mostly inaccessible to foreigners before the fall of Communism in 1989 and which has changed dramatically since opening up to visitors. On its gentle descent to the sea, the route passes through many small towns that were ignored during the Communist period but have now reemerged as medieval gems, as well as larger cities such as Prague, Dresden and Magdeburg which have been rebuilt and restored since the fall of the Iron Curtain.
