The Power and the Glory. Graham Greene
The Power and the Glory est un roman atypique en ce sens qu'il tranche sur la production romanesque anglo-saxonne de tradition protestante pour s'inscrire dans un courant catholique plus minoritaire. Issu d'un voyage que Greene fit au Mexique en 1938, le livre prend pour cadre la persécution des prêtres dans l'état du Tabasco. Le récit fait la preuve du brio de Greene, transposant les techniques cinématographiques qui le fascinaient, jouant sur le mélange des genres, mêlant fatum et grotesque, chasse à l'homme et questionnement spirituel. On retrouve le décor triste, écrasé de soleil, les scènes fortes, les stratégies de répétition et le sens du dialogue très théâtral caractéristiques de Greene. Mais le roman se démarque du message monolithique en jouant sur le paradoxe, l'ambiguïté, l'interrogation. Le lecteur doit alors repérer des indices et des pistes de lecture pour mieux percevoir les enjeux du texte, et apprécier à sa juste mesure cette écriture moins simple qu'il n'y paraît de prime abord.

In our age, there is the need for traditional wisdoms to retain their validity and be intrinsic to our philosophic and scientific perceptions of the cosmos. We cannot do without their knowledge, their spiritual perspective, and their deep faith in the harmony of all nature. Ignoring these qualities has profound environmental implications. Global warming, environmental pollution, and the exhaustion of nature's resources are but a few of the symptoms of the nature's experiences as we continue to mistreat it in order to satisfy our own ends. This work helps us to realise that wherever we are, we are a part of nature. All the things around us are as presences, representing forces and powers of life that are not ours and yet are all part of us. Then we find them reflecting in ourselves, because we are nature, though not identical with it.

WHY SEX MATTERS. A Darwinian Look at Human Behavior
Why are men, like other primate usually the aggressors and risk takers? Why do women typically have fewer sexual partners? Why is killing infants routine in some cultures, but forbidden in others? Why is incest everywhere taboo? Bobbi Low ranges from ancient Rome to modern America, from the Amazon to the Arctic, and from single-celled organisms to international politics to show that these and many other questions about human behavior largely come down to evolution and sex. More precisely, as she shows in this uniquely comprehensive and accessible survey of behavioral and evolutionary ecology, they come down to the basic principle that all organisms evolved to maximize their reproductive success and seek resources to do so.
Low begins by reviewing the fundamental arguments and assumptions of behavioral ecology: selfish genes, conflicts of interest, and the tendency for sexes to reproduce through different behaviors. She explains why in primate species-from chimpanzees and apes to humans-males seek to spread their genes by devoting extraordinary efforts to finding mates, while females find it profitable to expend more effort on parenting. Low illustrates these sexual differences among humans by showing that in places as diverse as the parishes of nineteenth-century Sweden, the villages of seventeenth-century China, and the forests of twentieth-century Brasil, men have tended to seek power and resources, from cattle to money, to attract mates, while women have sought a secure environment for raising children. She makes it clear, however, they have not done so simply through individual efforts or in a vacuum, but that men and women act in complex ways that involve cooperation and coalition building and that are shaped by culture, technology, tradition, and the availability of resources. Low also considers how file evolutionary drive to
acquire resources leads to environmental degradation and warfare and asks whether our behavior could be channeled in more constructive ways.
Why Sex Matters is a compelling work of biology, sociology, and anthropology and a penetrating study of the deep motivations that underlie individual and social behavior.

The History and some Problems of Television Service in Anambra State of Nigeria
The television medium has reached the heights of complication. This complication is the aftereffect of the fact that broadcasting in itself (both TV and Radio) recognizes little or no boundaries. Broadcasting breaks the boundaries of, inter alia, political, cultural, linguistic, socio-economical and socio-psychological identities. It reaches extensive "possibilities" embracing, collecting and connecting nationalities and people, languages and cultures. This situation must continue to raise the question why such a global-transcontinental and transnational communications' "inter-flux". This work is in this context an aid towards possible solutions of the present question on the TV-medium. The interest of this work can be said to be the presentation of facts that brought Anambra State of Nigeria to this "embrace" of the world's extensive television technology.

Fearing the worst, the Lambda Initiative was created to police wiki infractions and to protect the fabled Lambda Time Travel Restrictions. Anyone, human or alien, attempting to bypass the Lambda Protocols was subject to prosecution under this new law. To enforce this law, the G-Men were created. Culled from specialists with military and law enforcement experience, the G-Men sought out Lambda Protocol violators with swift and violent response. With wiki crimes on the rise and a growing anti-alien movement gaining strength, something had to be done. The government needed a solution, but they weren't sure what to do. And then they discovered a teenage girl living in Brazil with a special affinity for traversing and moulding the data stream. They had discovered the first Googol. And the world was about to change.

La musique pop rock des lycéens berlinois du groupe Tine Melk est fraîche comme du yoghourt à boire ! Après être allé à l'un de leurs concerts, on sait ce qu'est le vrai rock ! Ils se défoncent jusqu'à l'évanouissement et nous avec. Les nanas hurlent et les mecs sont en transe. The band, c'est le guitariste virtuose Vic Vegas, la trop sexy Lala to Linda, le batteur nonchalant Chris Navratilova et Mawil, le bassiste le plus chaud de la scène des groupes de bahut. Leur repaire est situé dans un étrange local, au sous-sol d'une vieille église du centre de Berlin, où il n'est pas rare que le saint-esprit vienne transpirer à grosses gouttes.

Dans le cadre d'un stage, Théodore Atem intègre une équipe de chercheurs basée en Suède qui travaille sur la communication des arbres entre eux et avec nous. Ce groupe de travail dirigé par le professeur Frawley et son assistante Moon, tente de démontrer que les arbres détiennent les secrets de la Terre à travers leur ADN, leur codex. C'est en recoupant ces génomes avec la mort mystérieuse de promeneurs en forêt espagnole, le comportement inhabituel des animaux sauvages et la présence de champignons toxiques que le professeur comprendra, hélas trop tard, que ces événements sonnent l'alerte d'un drame planétaire duquel seul Théodore et quelques survivants seront épargnés. Serait-ce une nouvelle chance pour l'espèce humaine ?

Je me souviens de ta main qui traçait des lignes à la craie sur les tissus. De ton trait de coupe, tu délimitais des territoires entiers, qui portaient les noms de crêpe de Chine, bourrette de soie, panne de velours, lin, coton suisse, tweed, toile, gabardine, flanelle, étamine de laine... Entre souvenir d'enfance et malentendus liés à la langue, Florence Gilard esquisse à petites touches sa relation à sa grand-mère. Elle décrit les gestes sûrs de la couturière qu'elle était, les jeux d'enfants, les mercredis passés chez elle et la difficulté de se séparer. Reprenant à son compte les gestes consistant à assembler et coudre ensemble les morceaux de tissus, elle compose un récit, fait de pièces qui ne semblaient pourtant pas tenir ensemble. Malentendus ou incompréhensions langagières, des petites phrases énigmatiques ou confuses pouvaient alors donner lieu à des représentations erronées, décalées, émaillées de drôleries. L'étrange : The end, te and, the hand... devient le point de départ de son récit. Qu'est-ce que ces mots anglais entrés dans l'univers de l'en-fance grâce aux cow-boys dans les films de western peuvent bien avoir à voir avec les Américains venus libérer la France il y a si longtemps ? La naïveté d'alors fait place à un regard amusé et tendre sur ce qui se transmet à travers le récit familial. Dans cet objet hybride, graphique et poétique, l'autrice suggère plus qu'elle ne démontre. Elle nous offre un regard sensible et intime sur le temps qui passe, la nostalgie de l'enfance, la fin de vie, la tendresse qui lie les générations d'une même famille et savoir dire au revoir tout en gardant précieusement ses sou-venirs. Florence Gilard utilise plusieurs techniques graphiques pour recréer cette toile de souvenirs et de nostalgie de l'enfance. Dessins aux crayons de couleurs, anciennes photographies, fil cousu dans la page se mêlent pour dérouler le fil de cette histoire intime.

One Artist on Five Continents
Elisabet Delbrück (1876-1967) was one of a number of Germans who came to New Zealand in the late 1930s. Unlike most, she had not intended to emigrate but was touring the country when World War II broke out. She was at first forbidden to leave and then chose to remain in Wellington. Her thirty years in Mahina Bay on Wellington harbour had a profound effect on all who knew her. This study aims to discover why she was so remarkable. It explores her early life, her marriage into a prominent German family and her qualification as an artist. She turned this into a profession, teaching and exhibiting on five continents in the 1920s and 1930s. She always travelled alone, observing the customs and beliefs of the people she met. In Australia and New Zealand in 1938 and 1939 she was wrongly suspected of spreading Nazi propaganda. Her story is also the story of a heroic group of Wellingtonians who helped her in the 1940s and valued her friendship till her death.

German-Irish Corporate Relationships
The book addresses the question of whether, in an age of internationalisation and globalisation, cultural differences are still relevant to German-Irish corporate relationships ? The first three chapters establish the theoretical framework for the analysis by exploring the notion of culture, profiling the business cultures of both countries, and examining existing approaches to the study of parent company-foreign subsidiary relationships. In the following three chapters, using interviews carried out with two sample groups (fifteen German parent companies and fourteen of their Irish operations ; seven Irish parent companies and nine of their German operations), the parent companies in both groups are examined to see whether they demonstrate characteristics which are in keeping with their national business cultures. Their foreign operations are then analysed as is the parent company-foreign subsidiary relationship to determine whether any parent company influences are visible. The general approaches adopted by the two groups of parent companies to their foreign operations are compared and contrasted. Finally differences in national attitudes and values are identified and their impact assessed.

The Sagho djebel is the eastern extension of the Anti-Atlas, a volcanic mountain with granitic mamelons, basaltic organs, chaos of black shales, pink sandstones... at the gates of the Sahara. As far as the eye can see, large wild, arid spaces. A desolate land made for the lonely DPM. And for a thousand miles around, silence is the only companion. Absolute plenitude and the desire to take to the track. From flat expanses to rolling hills, from sharp relief to steep canyons : pure, original nature. The character is strong, rustic but the heart is soft. The colours are soft and gentle. Ochre, pink, brown, violet, the colour chart stretches in a gradation of shimmering pastels, sometimes accompanied by an overwhelming heat. Eldorado in the heart of the desert, rare are the oases ; modest green spots in the infinitely large, they are the reminders that we are on African soil. The wild charm of the Sagho is due to its exceptional geology : high cliffs and steep peaks, tabular escarpments and deep canyons in the middle of which caravans of camels and mules circulate. When you arrive on these immense plateaus, the lunar horizon is so vast that you want to go everywhere at once to see if it is really as beautiful elsewhere ! The Sagho also surprises by the richness of its lights : limpid like those of the nearby Sahara, or sometimes in half-tone, as in the neighbouring Dades valley. The Sagho is also the Morocco of the last Berber nomads, descendants of the ancient lords Aït Atta. In autumn, after leaving the snows of the High Atlas, they set up their dark wool tents on the slopes of the jebel until spring. They can neither read nor write, but they are sure of their way through the Atlas Mountains and the Moroccan desert. Son oeuvre commence avec les Stooges en 1967 après quelques balbutiements garage. Avec les frères Asheton, Ron et Scott, Il viole tous les codes du rock de l'époque avec leurs deux premiers albums, The Stooges en 1969 et Fun House en 1970. Les Stooges engendre une musique dont la vibration physique est la transcription sonore de la violence urbaine de la ville industrielle de Detroit. Trop radicaux, trop en avance, les Stooges se séparent une première fois en 1971, avant de se réincarner en 1972 grâce à l'aide de David Bowie. Iggy And The Stooges publient le dernier volet du tryptique historique : Raw Power en 1973. La carrière des Stooges se terminent dans la poudre, la misère et l'alcool en 1974 après une tournée des plus cahotiques. Oublié de tous, Iggy Pop ne sait pas que la musique de son groupe est en train de devenir l'un des piliers majeurs d'une nouvelle génération appelée Punk qui surgira dès 1976. Une petite communauté de passionnés français, journalistes, disquaires, et fans, va alimenter la flamme du mythe Stooges et Iggy Pop jusqu'à son grand retour en 1977, encore une fois grâce à David Bowie. C'est le début d'une carrière solo riche de dix-neuf albums studio, balayant de vastes territoires musicaux : new-wave, hard-rock, blues-rock, electro-rock, et même chanson française. Iggy Pop s'essaie à de nombreuses expériences sonores tout en gardant une éthique rock inflexible. C'est que l'homme est devenu une figure de l'histoire du rock, presque un personnage de bande dessinée que l'on retrouve aussi au cinéma ou dans des publicités où il n'hésite pas à se parodier lui-même. Toutefois, sa légende comme son coeur a toujours battu pour ses Stooges incompris et mal-aimés. Il brisera ainsi son éthique de ne jamais revenir en arrière pour reformer les Stooges avec les frères Asheton en 2003, puis avec James Williamson en 2010. Comme une rédemption, Iggy Pop offre à ses anciens camarades l'occasion de connaître une reconnaissance méritée. Pour lui, c'est la consécration d'une existence à porter une musique originale et sans concessions, quels que furent ses éventuelles maladresses. Littéralement revenus d'entre les morts après des années d'excès, Iggy Pop et les Stooges sont aujourd'hui unanimement salués par tous les fans de rock. Il y a toujours un album que l'on aime chez Iggy Pop, quels que soient vos goûts musicaux dans le domaine. Ce livre revient sur l'ensemble de la discographie des Stooges et d'Iggy Pop, ainsi que celles des membres de ce groupe mythique (Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, James Williamson, Jimmy Recca). This collection of essays by authors in a variety of specialities should demonstrate how, in the Middle Ages, Boethius' texts helped shape the essential concepts of the educated person who underwent a course of the Liberal Arts studies. These essays should be of interest to philosophers, logicians, musicologists, historians of mathematics and ideas and to literary scholars. After The Last Ship
After the Last Ship illustrates the author's own history, as well as its connection to the history of other women and children who left India and made the journey across the Kala Pani, the Indian Ocean, and lived as migrants in other countries. In this book the author brings greater understanding of how subjectivities are shaped through embodied experiences of ‘mixed race'. She bears witness to the oppressive policies of the fascist government in Portugal in the 1960's and 1970's and the effects of displacement and exile, by reconstructing her own passage from India to Mozambique and finally to Australia. Further, the author shows the devastation that labels such as ‘half-caste', ‘canecos' and ‘monhe' can cause, when they eat at your flesh, your being, and your body. She sheds light on how identity and culture can serve as vehicles of empowerment, how experiences of belonging can germinate and take root post-diaspora.
