En 2021, Bob Dylan fêtera à la fois ses quatre-vingts ans et les soixante ans d'une carrière particulièrement prolifique. Depuis son premier disque enregistré à l'âge de vingt ans jusqu'au triomphe post-confinement de Rough And Rowdy Ways, il aura ainsi publié 39 albums studio et 6 albums live... du moins officiellement ! Car, en réalité, ce sont des milliers de références qui sont aujourd'hui proposées sur le marché. Entre l'exhumation de ses archives inédites via notamment la collection des Bootleg Series, l'importance jamais démentie du marché pirate depuis le mythique Great White Wonder, l'entrée dans le domaine public de ses premiers enregistrements, la prolifération de compilations en tous genres, sans oublier les innombrables reprises de ses chansons par d'autres artistes, la discographie dylanienne est un labyrinthe vertigineux. Based on extensive research this work gives a detailed account and a reappraisal of Edward Westermarck's thought. Westermarck had versatile relations to Victorian evolutionists (Wallace, Tylor, Spencer), and to British social anthropologists (Frazer, Haddon, Rivers, Malinowski) and psychologists (Shand, Sully). Westermarck was a pioneer of anthropological fieldwork, and his writings on the history of marriage and on the origin and development of moral ideas are modern classics. He was a transitional figure between evolutionism, on the one hand, and functionalism and structuralism, on the other hand. Westermarck's theories of exogamy and incest, and his notions of psychological ethics, moral emotions and concepts, and expanding morality were referred to by Durkheim and Freud, as they are referred to by present-day evolutionary theorists. The search for mankind continues to be of current interest.

The Riace Bronzes
The fourth volume in our "Hidden Treasures" series is dedicated to the Riace Bronzes, two of the very few ancient bronze statues that have survived to this day and now preserved in the National Archeological Museum in Reggio Calabria. This publication was designed to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their discovery. In it, Luigi Spina's photographic research dialogs with the texts written by Carmelo Malacrino. The photographer here develops a continued narrative, offering a direct comparison between the two sculptures, identified as A and B, exploring interpretations of the physicality of the two subjects as well as the three-dimensional quality of the bronze bodies, often concealed by the two-dimensional appearance of photographic images. Carmelo Malacrino and Riccardo Di Cesare analyse these famous 5th century BC masterpieces from two points of view : as ancient works of art on the one hand, and considering their significance for contemporary culture on the other. He retraces the story of the Bronzes beginning with their discovery in August, 1972, exploring the circumstances of their unearthing, the restoration they underwent, the exhibitions in which they were shown, as well as the impact they have had on the public, both nationally and internationally. Equally relevant is the reinterpretation of these two statues, beginning with their contextualization in the sphere of ancient Greek art, the related stylistic issues, and the reflection upon the practices and the knowledge possessed by Classical sculpture workshops. This volume will be a pleasant surprise for those of you who love Classical sculpture, for archaeology enthusiasts, and for all those who aren't satisfied with a quick glance when it comes to admiring a work of art.

Nationalism in Education
The comparative Reader, with authors from 6 continents and 9 countries analyses, to what extent the nation concept is still at the heart of international organizations and agreements, under which circumstances nationalism rose in specific regions and cultures at different times, and, to what extent education was influenced by or used for nationalistic doctrines and policies. Case studies as well as systematic analyses illustrate, that education can hardly change its own socioeconomic and political context. However, education and educational policy can support a prevention of and balance to nationalism in the long run, if they counteract stereotyping and scapegoating, familiarize with overlapping and competing loyalties, and, encourage human rights, international cooperation and cultural relationalism.

Accent and metre in French
There is currently no generally accepted theory of metre in French poetry. The aim of this book is to propose one which will be practically useful to readers and analysts of French verse. This theory relates metre to the accentual structure of different registers of spoken and written Modern French. It also addresses problems in the history of French metre by examining language texts from the Old French epic to the lyrics of Verlaine, as well as musical texts from the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.

Les Maudits. Ces écrivains qu’on vous interdit de lire
Les " maudits ", ce sont les écrivains épurés à la Libération : Brasillach, Drieu la Rochelle, Rebatet, Céline, et plus d'une centaine d'autres, entraînés, plus ou moins consciemment, dans la grande fièvre politique des années 1930 et 1940. Loin d'amener à remettre les choses en perspective, le temps qui s'est écoulé a au contraire favorisé la banalisation d'une imagerie manichéenne, où il n'y a plus que des (très) bons et des (très) méchants. Les opinions ont été transformées en délits, et une pensée unique veut imposer les limites d'un culturellement correct. Il existe une littérature immorale et des auteurs indécents, et leur traque est de salubrité publique. C'est contre cette grande entreprise de la bêtise universelle, contre cet " esprit des listes noires " que les auteurs, universitaires, journalistes ou écrivains eux-mêmes, mais toujours esprits libres, appellent à se dresser. Sans sombrer dans la bêtise inverse, ils nous invitent à lire les livres des " maudits " pour ce qu'ils sont : des livres, bons ou mauvais.

Lire ou déchiffrer ? L'apprentissage de la lecture en questions
Chacun s'accorde à dire que la question de l'apprentissage de la lecture est absolument essentielle. Et pourtant, aucun sujet ne se prête plus aux caricatures. C'est, par excellence, le domaine des fantasmes les dégâts de la "méthode globale !", des lieux communs "les jeunes ne lisent plus !", des simplifications faciles "les élèves ne doivent même plus connaître les lettres !"... En réalité, les méthodes de lecture n'ont guère évolué depuis des décennies et il convient de (re)faire de la lecture un véritable objet de travail et de recherche pédagogique. C'est précisément ce que fait cet ouvrage. Sous la direction d'Eveline Charmeux qui a consacré toute sa vie professionnelle à cette question des enseignants, des chercheurs, des militants pédagogiques s'efforcent de comprendre vraiment "ce que lire veut dire". C'est ainsi que les enseignants d'école primaire, mais aussi les parents et tous les éducateurs, trouveront ici un ensemble totalement sans précédent de réflexions et de propositions. Ils découvriront dans ce travail réellement collaboratif des raisons et des moyens d'agir. Des outils pour penser et des démarches pour accompagner l'enfant dans l'entrée dans la lecture.

Le drame de l'existence
Sommes-nous des astres qui brillent dans la nuit et s'éteignent à l'aurore ? ... The transition of the Eastern Central European countries from centrally planned economies to developed market economies has been one of the major structural changes in Europe. It started a new stage of enlargement of the European Union. The monograph presents the results of an international research effort aimed at the analysis of macroeconomic aspects of joining the European Union by the Central European countries. This analysis was based on country and world economy models and rests on a series of alternative scenarios of economic development up to the year 2010. It provides the reader with a broad historical background and a discussion of recent trends of Central Europe. It summarises the experience of the new members of the European Union. The scenario simulations show the likely path of future economic development for the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, analysing the pros and contras of joining the European Union.

"Ma route est d'un pays où vivre me déchire..."
"Ma route est d'un pays où vivre me déchire... " est un titre extrait des mots du Veilleur, un texte du poète suisse Edmond-Henri Crisinel né en 1897 et mort en 1948. Né en 1897 comme Gustave Roud. Cette référence aussi forte à la pensée délicate, désespérée aussi, de Crisinel, poète si peu prolixe, si peu présent dans les mémoires, est une façon de s'insérer dans le paysage, poussé par la force des choses, en quête du silence essentiel, du chemin égaré, des demeures profondes, des ciels clairs, de l'ensemble sensible du monde. Ce paysage désiré, et qui demeure à l'état de désir quoique expérimenté, ne laisse pas intact le promeneur malgré lui qu'est Serge Airoldi, engagé dans une marche périlleuse où la vie se construit et se consume dans le même temps, confrontée au vin céleste qui enivre de joie et qui endort l'espoir dans le même pas accompli. Un peu comme si l'Antiquité commençait seulement jeudi prochain. Un peu comme si le chemin impossible à déterminer, vécu au hasard, conduisait toujours à la maison natale, au désastre et à son territoire.

Les élites de cour de Constantinople (450-610). Une approche prosopographique des relations de pouvoir
L'histoire politique de l'Empire romain d'Orient au temps de Justinien (527-565) est d'ordinaire illustrée par quelques souverains à la postérité contrastée. Cet ouvrage étudie l'envers du décor de la cour de Constantinople entre 450 et 610, à l'époque où elle acquiert son existence propre. Il conduit donc du règne de Marcien, le promoteur du concile de Chalcédoine (451), à celui de Phocas, que l'on peut tenir pour le dernier empereur antique. Il repose sur une prosopographie des élites de cour connues pour leurs relations politiques avec les empereurs, mais aussi pour leurs liens familiaux, leurs origines géographiques et leurs orientation religieuses. Au sujet des individus répondant à ces critères, il discute le détail des carrières en particulier vis-à-vis des notices de la Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire. La question est abordée de manière chronologique. selon la succession des règnes impériaux : qui ont chacun valeur de test pour la configuration des élites de cour. L'origine géographique et l'orientation religieuse de ces élites font apparaître des groupes dominants et présentant une cohérence liée à ces deux facteurs. Les Balkans, l'Asie Mineure, le Proche-Orient et l'Egypte, tout comme le chalcédonisme et le monophysisme, occupent ainsi la scène des luttes de pouvoir dont la cour est le théâtre. Les solidarités familiales jouent un rôle longtemps sous-estimé et assez comparable à leur place dans l'histoire postérieure de Byzance. Des révoltes récurrentes invoquèrent souvent la légitimité des empereurs précédents. Mais ces contestation furent plus dangereuses dans les provinces que dans la capitale, et finalement peu menaçantes pour le pouvoir impérial, sauf au début du VIIe siècle. Si le personnel politique se renouvela fréquemment, il exista ainsi une permanence de certaines factions à la cour de Constantinople, qui acquit dans cette période une forme de stabilité. Le visage de la cour protobyzantine contribue ainsi à la connaissance de la culture politique européenne. The political history of the Eastern Roman Empire under Justinien is unusually embodied by few rulers with ambivalent legacies. This work studies the Constantinople court behind the scenes from 450 to 610, at the moment when it grew into a distinct entity. It thus spans the period from the rule of Marcian, the promoter of the Council of Chalcedon (451) to that of Phocas, who may be considered as the last Emperor of Antiquity. The approach relies on a prosopography of court elites known for their political ties with emperors. but also for their family bonds, geographical origins, and religious options. For each of the individuals meeting these criteria, career details are discussed, particularly in contrast with the entries of Prosopography of the later Roman Empire. The perspective is chronological and follows the successive imperial rule, each of them being studied with regard to the specific configuration of its court The geographical origin and religion orientation of these court Bites are main parameters delineating the dominant groups and cementing their cohesiveness The Balkans, Asia Minor, the Near East and Egypt were just as central as Chalcedonism and Monophysitism to the power struggles playing out in the court The importance of kinship loyalty during that period has long been underestimated, although it is similar to what is observed in the later history of the Byzantine Empire. Recurrent rebellion often harked back to the legitimacy of former Emperors. But these protests were more radical in the provinces than in the capital and ultimately proved to be only a tumor threat to the imperial power, except in the early seventh century. While the political personnel experienced a high turnover, certain faction still enjoyed relative longevity at the court of Constantinople, which gained a form of stability over the period. Studying the variation of the Byzantine court thus enriches our knowledge of European political culture.

Cuckoos, Cowbirds and Other Cheats
Cuckoos and cowbirds are amongst the select bird groups renowned as professional parasites, who always lay their eggs in the nests of other species. Occasional parasitic laying is also widespread in many other birds, who gladly parasitise the nests of their own kind when the opportunity arises.
In this fascinating new book, Nick Davies describes the natural histories of all the brood parasites and examines the exciting questions they raise about the evolution of cheating and the arms race between parasites and their hosts. Brood parasites fill their armoury with adaptations including exquisite egg mimicry, rapid laying, ejection of host eggs, murder of host young, chick mimicry and manipulative begging behaviour: ploys shown by recent research to have evolved in response to host defence behaviour or through competition among the parasites themselves. While many host species appear defenceless, accepting parasite eggs quite unlike their own, others are more discriminating against odd-looking eggs and some have evolved the ability to discriminate against odd-looking chicks as well. How does this arms race proceed? Will defenceless hosts improve their armoury in time, or are there sometimes constraints on hosts which allow the parasites to gain the upper hand? And why are so few species obliged only to lay eggs in host nests? Have host defences limited the success of brood parasitism, or is it in fact much commoner than we suspect, but occurring mainly when birds parasitise the nests of their own kind?
All of these puzzles are examined in descriptions of the natural history of each of the groups of parasites in turn. Here is a book with wide appeal, both to amateur naturalists fascinated by this most singular and macabre of behaviours and to ornithologists and ecologists interested in the evolution of ecology and behaviour. The story takes us from the strange tales of folklore to the classic field work earlier this century by pioneer ornithologists such as Edgar Chance, Stuart Baker, Herbert Friedmann and others, through to the recent experimental field work and molecular techniques of today's leading scientists. We visit brood parasites in Europe, Asia, Japan, Africa, Australasia, and North and South America, to look at some of the world's most interesting birds and sortie of biology's most interesting questions, many of which still beg answers from ornithologists in the future.
Brilliant illustrations by David Quinn depict many behaviours for the first time and convey the thrill of watching these astonishing birds in the wild.

900 Years of St Bartholomew's. The History, Art and Architecture of London's Oldest Parish Church
This important book presents a comprehensive history of St Bartholomew the Great, the oldest parish church in London. In 2023, the Priory Church and Hospital will celebrate the 900th anniversary of their foundation. At the heart of the Smithfield area, with its hospital, pubs, restaurants and market, is a church built when Henry I, son of William the Conqueror, was King of England. Overlooking the fields where kings confronted rebellions, knights jousted and heretics were burnt, St Bartholomew's Priory and Hospital played a central role in the history of medieval London. Partially torn down by order of Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Priory was reborn as a parish church. It served the City of London through the tumultuous years of the Reformation and the Civil War and has played host to many of London's most famous residents. William Hogarth was baptized in its font. Charles Wesley preached in its pulpit. Benjamin Franklin served as a printer's apprentice in its former Lady Chapel. John Betjeman lived across the street and memorialized it in his poetry. Artificial Intelligence and the Sociology of Knowledge
A central topic of the latest research in the philosophy of science is the question of what kind of relationship there is between the cognitive and social factors which underlie scientific knowledge. At present, this problem has manifested itself in a heated and still unfinished controversy between the proponents of artificial intelligence research and the sociologists of knowledge. By resolving the antagonism of these two positions, the book aims at developing a modular approach to an integrated philosophy of science which can handle the interaction between cognitive and social factors in a way which differs considerably from all current proposals.

Sturlunga Saga

Style and Rhetoric in Bertrand Russels's Work
A thorough examination of Bertrand Russell's language is the object of this study. Since this is the first major analysis of his writing style, examples taken from a wide spectrum of his writings are examined. Structurally the investigation begins by treating individual vocabulary and then moves on to larger structural units, covering such areas as figurative language and description. The final chapter deals with his rhetoric, discussing his methods of persuasion and the logic of his arguments. This careful analysis of his writings is significant in that it sheds new light on interesting aspects of Russell's character.
