Sociolinguistic reflexes of dialect interference in West Wirral
Studies of the phonology of urban language varieties in the Labovian vein have generally concentrated on structural and statistical differentiation along the "standard"-"non-standard" dimension. In this work the author reports the results of an attempt to apply the relevant methodology and theory to a more complex situation involving the encroachment of an extraneous vernacular on a formerly rural area in England where prestige standard forms are also well represented. The dialectological findings are described in some detail, and innovatory perspectives on various methodological and theoretical issues are developed.

A Study of English Nautical Loanwords in the Russian Language of the Eighteenth Century
This study is intended to give as full a survey as possible of 18th century Russian nautical and shipbuilding terms which were borrowed from English. The origins of the words are discussed and the date of each word's first attestation in Russian is given. Phonetic features and peculiarities of the loanwords are described, with special reference to possible English dialectal influence. A statistical analysis is given of the semantic aspect of the borrowings, which throws some light on the nature and extent of British influence on the nascent Russian shipbuilding industry.

Un personnage ambigu mais attachant. Un thriller passionnant. Un concept génial. Une série mythique.

Soda Tome 12 : Code Apocalypse
Quand le flic devient un tueur. "Etre policier n'est pas le plus difficile. La peur, le sang, le vitreux d'un regard mort... Je ne pense pas qu'on oublie, non... Mais à ce qu'il paraît, il est possible de s'y habituer". Même en proie à ses états d'âme, Soda, policier new-yorkais trois doigts à la main gauche et une mère cardiaque qui le croit pasteur est un flic terriblement efficace. Lors d'une mission particulièrement sanglante, il abat un jeune homme. Il apparaît que ce dernier était un tueur au service du gouvernement, qui impose alors à Soda de le remplacer pour terminer sa mission fatale... On savait Philippe Tome capable d'humour et de tendresse avec les gags du "Petit Spirou". On a découvert son talent de scénariste dramatique, qui ne se départit jamais de son humour noir, avec "Sur la route de Selma" (avec Berthet) et "Berceuse assassine" (avec Ralph Meyer). Quant à Bruno Gazzotti, chaque album de "Soda" est l'occasion pour lui de prouver la virtuosité et la redoutable efficacité de son trait. Avec ce personnage de flic new-yorkais désabusé, qui fait croire à sa mère qu'il est pasteur ce qui l'oblige à des contorsions vestimentaires deux fois par jour dans l'ascenseur les auteurs ont créé un des héros les plus originaux et les plus forts de ces quinze dernières années. Une série qui fait la part belle à l'action et à l'humour noir.

Depuis des années, pour préserver le petit coeur fragile de sa mère, Soda mène une double vie : flic de New York pour tous, pasteur aux yeux de sa maman. Jusqu'à présent, l'entourloupe a toujours fonctionné et Mary croit à la vocation de son petit David. Mais cela risque d'être mis à mal le jour où son oncle pasteur débarque dans leur appartement new-yorkais pour rendre visite à Mary. Devant maintenir l'illusion de sa fausse vocation, Soda conduit son oncle dans sa chapelle pour le présenter à ses " fidèles ", une bande de prisonniers en transit entre deux prisons. Sérieusement, qu'est-ce qui pourrait mal se passer ?

Soda Tome 10 : Dieu seul le sait
Pour Soda, la journée avait plutôt mal commencé... Ce fichu rêve, d'abord. L'ascenseur, ensuite. En panne. Et son pistolet oublié sur le réfrigérateur ? Il s'en était fallu de peu que sa mère le découvrît, au prix sans doute d'un bel infarctus. Surtout ne pas apprendre que son rejeton est un flic. Elle croit toujours, la pauvre, qu'il est pasteur. Enfin, il y eut la course-poursuite, à cause de ce gros tas de Jason Flea qui s'est fait la malle. Résultat : il s'est retrouvé dans la vitrine accueillante d'un magasin de confection. Un choc, terrible. Plus de peur que de mal, mais cette question qui le taraude depuis : "Qui suis-je vraiment ? " Dieu seul le sait.

Soda Tome 9 : Et délivre-nous du mal
Pour une fois que Soda sort de sa juridiction, il ne va pas tarder à le regretter ! En bon fils, il accompagne sa maman pour quelques jours de vacances dans sa ville natale et s'embarque pour Providence, Arizona. Mais quand on est flic (même déguisé en pasteur pour ne pas effrayer sa mère), les ennuis ne tardent pas à rappliquer : le moindre voyage en bus se transforme en chevauchée fantastique. Et à l'arrivée, il doit encore affronter l'hostilité des autochtones. Car ce retour au pays n'est pas du goût de tout le monde. Surtout quand Soda commence à se pencher de plus près sur les circonstances mystérieuses de la mort de son père. Et que sa double identité est en passe d'être dévoilée. Après tout ça, (et s'il s'en sort), New York risque de lui paraître bien calme...

Hymns: The Making and Shaping of a Theology for the Whole People of God
The theological potential of hymns has never been fully exploited. This study shows how hymns communicate theology and enable those without a formal theological education to enter into theological debate. A nineteenth century collection of English hymns and some contemporary Bemba hymns from the Zambian Copperbelt are examined and compared, within their theological, cultural and social contexts, to discover their response to death, judgement, heaven and hell. From this comparison and a study of how hymns are used in these churches, a model emerges whereby hymns can be used to make and shape theology. This model is observed in a Zambian parish and is also shown in practice in an English parish. Finally, there is a reflection on the implications of this model for Missiology and Ecclesiology showing, among other things, the need for a radical reassessment of the relationship between professional theologians and the rest of the Church.

The basin of Congo is an African opportunity for the whole world. Flavius Josephus, the Zealots and Yavne
The historiography concerning The War of the Jews by Flavius Josephus has underlined the various aspects (economic, social, political, religious) of the Roman-Jewish conflict from 66 to 73 AD. A study of the Jew's vision of himself and the Other, the Roman, makes it possible to see this conflict from the point of view of the conquered. Analysis of the events which, from 6 to 66 AD, resulted in the opening of hostilities, suggests that the Jewish-Roman conflict was also a conflict of mentalities. The Jewish mentality implies a concept of war which contributed to the development of the divisions and schisms between the supporters of full-scale war against Rome (the Zealots) and the non-belligerents (Rabbi Yohanan ben Zaccaï and the Yavne School, Flavius Josephus). Furthermore, the discourse of Flavius Josephus is Jewish discourse. So far as certain options are concerned, such as his rejection of the war against Rome on the one hand, and his hatred of the Zealots on the other, a literal reading of that discourse shows that they are in the direct line of Jewish tradition as represented by RYBZ and his Yavne School. Josephus can be taken literally ; the interest of his writing lies in its presentation of an internal cohesion and in the light that throws on the points of convergence and divergence in the same Pharisaic options. Finally, Josephus' text leads us to reconsider the problem of his 'betrayal'.

The international airline industry is characterized by radical changes in regulation and firm behavior. Open-sky agreements abolish market entry restrictions, and global strategic alliances replace the government controlled national carriers. With deregulation and the restructuring of firms still in progress, the future design of market structures cannot easily be predicted. Will airlines behave competitively or is there danger of collusion ? Do large networks lead to monopoly supply ? And what are the effects of open skies on consumer welfare ? Roland Fischer answers these questions by developing an economic model that combines traditional monopoly and oligopoly theory with specific features of air transport markets, like hub-and-spoke systems and passengers' valuation of time. Living in Two Worlds
This is a study of Singapore pastors' worldview & understanding of the epidemiology, symptomatology and management of possession behaviour. The pastors' accounts are compared with those from the scientific disciplines, and convergences and divergences noted. Factors shaping both the pastors' and the scientific discourses are examined. The pastors are shown to respond to competing scientific paradigms by reinforcing their two-worlds worldview. They either live mainly in the other world, or in each world at a time, or between the two worlds. Based on theological reflection focusing on epistemology, theodicy & cosmology, the author shows that the paradigm of living in both worlds simultaneously is the most appropriate pastoral response. The theological vision of the coexisting worlds and the pastoral task of unmasking and resisting evil in all its varieties and depths are then discussed.
