Yet a careful reading of those letters within letters, that seem to pass unnoticed in a novel where sight is the most important of the five senses and where the (mis) interpretation of signs is central, proves rewarding if only from a dramatic viewpoint. Indeed, some of those (enclosed, copied, mentioned, commented upon, etc.) letters within the letters collected by the "editor" trigger not just one of the two plots (the quest for Evelina's name and, at least, social identity) but also changes in geographical places, new turns in the two plots (the second one being the love plot), a comic episode, etc. If some of them thwart the reader's expectations, all of them make it possible to approach one of the key issues broached in the novel. Secondly, the structuring reference to classical Hollywood melodrama can be referred both to Davies's previous films and to his own personal taste. This paper examines the limits of such interpretations on the period immediately preceding the foundation of the first parks and studies the contribution of rural cemeteries to the park movement. Andrew DIAMOND : Cutting through the "Fog of War" : World War II and the fracturing of the New Deal order in the urban North While the New Deal created a new relationship between ordinary citizens and the federal government with its work relief programs, welfare system, and laws protecting organized labor, this relationship began to sour in a northern wartime context marked by massive black migration, widespread racial conflict, and increasingly militant civil rights organizations. Pressured by black mobilization and the outbreak of violent civil disorders in major war production centers between 1941 and 1943, federal, state, and city authorities moved to create a range of race relations organizations devoted to fighting racial discrimination and fostering interracial cooperation. These organizations, some which were of a quasi-official nature, quickly became fixtures on the local political scene, playing active roles in countering the campaigns of whites to keep blacks out of their neighborhoods and to retain the privileges of whiteness at work. What follows constitutes an attempt to understand how white residents and workers perceived and responded to these new race relations organizations. I will argue that in the eyes of average white residents and workers whose interests seemed to run up against them, the proliferation of these organizations worked to recast the role of the state from protector of the working man to protector of black rights, thereby fracturing the young New Deal order. The crisis of democracy in Europe and the inability of the political parties and élites to adequately meet the challenges of globalisation exposes the increasingly fragmented middle classes to the temptations of Euroscepticism, and, in some cases, xenophobia. This appears to be a portrait of contemporary reality, but the current crisis has deep roots. The Spanish thinker José Ortega y Gasset described the pathologies of the mass man and of the nascent democratic system as far back as the beginning of the twentieth century, in a significant text entitled Una democracia morbosa, which appears to foreshadow the present state of affairs. The crisis of the average man, the degradation and devaluation of culture appear to be the distinctive traits of the new, post-ideological democracy of our times, known as "audience democracy". The political parties, faced with this profound crisis, in some cases seek dangerous shortcuts through demagogic and rhetorical use of the term "people", while the charismatic figure of the leader gains in prestige as a reference model. Resentment, caused by lack of representation of the just demands of the citizens, can turn to anger and destabilise the institutions of democracy. This book provides a short overview of the development of aggressive behavior, assessment guidelines and the contents and materials of two training programs. The Training with Aggressive Children and Training with Adolescents are recognized multimodal cognitive-behavioral training programs developed for the treatment of aggressive behavior (oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder) in children and adolescents. The individual and group training modules are supported by parent and family counseling. The training programs are based on the modern learning theory. The effectiveness of the training programs was proven through empirical studies. The children and adolescents concerned showed important improvement and significant changes with respect to problem behavior as well as an increased prosocial behavior.

Then came the Second Sino-Japanese war, family tragedy, the loss of nearly all his early work, and finally, exile-to Taiwan in 1949, then, in 1955, to Paris, where he settled. This peaceful home witnessed the emergence of his tortured abstraction, devoid of obvious geometry, in which polychrome nebulae and maelstroms clash with violent chiaroscuro effects. Atmospheric, impossible to scale, each painting is an arena into which vision is projected and submerged amid a loss of spatial and semantic bearings. Steeped in painting both classical and modern, Asian and Western, Chu's art recreates the memory of a landscape, the dynamic essence of gesture, and the brilliance of light. This study, by placing his work in its context, using parallels, analogies, and other resonances, focuses on the singularity of his approach to abstraction, underpinned by the organic logic of the living world, by natural phenomena, forms, forces, and by their eruptive fluidity and cosmogonic revolutions. For many years, Chu remained a somewhat marginal figure, perhaps because of his reserved personality and his principled rejection of commercial strategies. Making the most of historical perspective, and in light of the artist's current recognition, this monograph sets out to define some of the aesthetic themes shaping his work and to help dispel some of the misunderstandings that have surrounded its reception.

Anthony Speelman is the doyen of English art dealers specializing in Dutch Golden Age art. The two monkeys in the title refer to two paintings of a monkey holding a peach by George Stubbs, the outstanding English animal painter. Anthony describes how he discovered one of these masterpieces as a 'sleeper' in a Sotheby's sale. Early in his career Anthony's rooms in Piccadilly were broken into and a number of paintings stolen, including a George Stubbs painting of a spaniel. An intriguing tale follows, ending with the paintings recovered some eighteen months later after a failed blackmail attempt on the part of the thieves. Amongst his accomplishments, Speelman was for many years chairman of the vetting committee at the annual Maastricht art fair. He describes the working of the committees which ensure that all works exhibited are correctly described. Still active in the art world, he is currently chairman of the vetting committee of the prestigious annual Masterpiece art fair in London. Other chapters detail Speelman's travels to California, New York and Paris, his interest in gastronomy and his thrilling adventures in the world of horseracing. The book is beautifully illustrated with examples of works that have passed through the author's hands. The wide range of illustrations is not limited to Dutch art and includes works by Canaletto, Stubbs, Raphael, Tiepolo, Melendez and other Old Masters.

In South Korea the increase of population and the economic growth together with a shortage of arable land has led to land speculation. The government has tried to encounter this speculation with legislative acts introducing ceilings on land ownership, imposing taxes on excessive land holding and controlling real-estate transactions. These public policy measures are understood in Korea as the "Public Concept of Land Ownership". The Korean reports collected in this book explain in detail this concept and measure it by its economic efficiency as well as by its constitutionality. A part of the German reports describes how the same legal questions are dealt with under German law. Other reports examine the history of land ownership and the reprivatisation of land in East Germany after 1990.

Philosophers are in the process of constructing an environmental ethics theory intended to govern human conduct toward nature. Relying on moral philosophy or ecological theory to generate normative principles, philosophers have failed to pay adequate attention to human psychology. To address the question of responsible relations with nature via insights and methods from moral psychology means to validate environmental ethics theory with real-life human functioning. It also means broadening the psychological study of morality to include nature. An interpretive analysis of the study participants' moral deliberations and experiences revealed the moral ideals of "care" and "respect." These contrast with the moral ideal of "justice" which dominates environmental ethics discourse.

The symposium will focus on two examples of autodidacts from the nineteenth century, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) and Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918), as well as on the issues surrounding this notion today. The model of the autodidact appears as a figure that sheds light on our value systems and our patterns of recognition and learning in a world where different conceptions of culture coexist. Over two days, art historians, critics, writers, artists and teachers will gather to discuss autodidacticism through multiple perspectives. The term "autodidact" is generally used to describe someone who has acquired knowledge or skills through their own reading, observations and practice - an approach that is radically different from academic study in the arts, for example, that is validated by institutions. Yet what can we possibly learn if we sacrifice brilliant cultural values on the altar of all- round relativism, where everything is equally valid ? Faced with this relativism, what does one make of the canonical in a globalised and fragmented world ? What to make of an unlearning that cripples the authority of the keepers of knowledge ? These different "cultures of knowledge" presuppose diverse geopolitical realities that are worth interrogating.

This substantial catalogue explores a remarkable collection of medieval European sculpture. Richly detailed with plentiful illustrations and original research, it is a notable contribution to medieval scholarship. The McCarthy collection comprises more than 150 specimens of medieval European sculpture, produced over a period of nearly 600 years. A testimony to the comprehensiveness of Robert McCarthy's interest in the art and culture of the Middle Ages, its geographical, chronological and typological breadth place it among the most important of its kind in private hands. Including a few early examples from Merovingian France, Anglo-Saxon England and Visigothic Spain, its holdings have a strong focus on Romanesque art, with over fifty capitals and other architectural carvings from Iberia, France and the Italian Peninsula. Some of these pieces are associable with such notable workshops as those of Gislebertus, the Master of Agüero and Compostela's Master Mateo, while a great number can be closely compared to anonymous works in major and provincial sites. Notable monuments like the monastic powerhouse of Cluny or the abbatial churches of Autun and Savigny are represented through important sculptural fragments - most published here for the first time. The transition to the Gothic style and the period of its splendour, particularly in France, are witnessed by an ample selection of statuary and architectural fragments - some traceable to such important buildings as Noyon cathedral and Paris' Notre Dame, and others, more loosely, to the artistic circles that gravitated around the great projects of the age. Freestanding sculpture in stone or wood, including a small but precious nucleus of Virgin and Child statuary and some Spanish polychrome figures, constitutes an interesting subset of the collection's late medieval holdings, as do some especially fine examples of Italian trecento sculpture. Enriched with outstanding photography by Barney Hindle and Mark French, entries aim to provide detailed stylistic, iconographic and contextual analyses, with special attention paid to comparanda in public and other private collections. This approach, complemented in some cases by petrographic analysis, has allowed the. authors to connect much of the material presented in these pages with specific buildings, workshops or regional schools, contributing to a better understanding of the pieces themselves, their original settings and their cultural and artistic milieux. This catalogue follows the publication of three volumes dedicated to Robert McCarthy's vast collection of Western miniatures and manuscript leaves (2018-2021), and is part of an ambitious project to document the entirety of his holdings - which also include notable selections of medieval ivories, stained glass and East Christian Art.

This study examines the way in which late medieval and early modern Germans envisioned the Balkan Slavic peoples. It deals with mental categories, such as images, perceptions, and attitudes, which the German-speaking subjects of the Holy Empire gradually developed during their increasingly frequent contacts with the Balkans in the period between 1400 and 1600. During that time span the Germans were constructing their own type of negative self-identification that served as a grid through which information about other peoples was processed. The closer definition of that grid and the types of images and attitudes produced by the encounter and bequeathed to modern Germans and, indeed, to the rest of Western Europe is one of the main goals of the book.

Elena Kats-Chernin wrote Afterwards for the 18th birthday of a young acquaintance, Guy Knopke, who had just started playing the bassoon. The title refers to "the new adventures and changes that can lie ahead after a significant milestone", according to the composer. She created a solo [also duo] piano version for herself, which is published in the anthology Piano Village (BB 3409). The final version of the original for bassoon and piano, which is no longer quite suitable for beginners, was recorded on CD by Elena Kats-Chernin together with the soloist Lorelei Dowling on Chromart Classics in 2017.
