Andrea Sacchi and Cardinal del Monte. The Rediscovered Frescoes in the Palazzo di Ripetta in Rome

This fascinating and beautifully illustrated book presents for the first time the rediscovered frescoes painted by Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661) for the loggia of Cardinal del Monte's Roman palace near via di Ripetta, Rome. Considered lost by generations of scholars, Andrea Sacchi's fresco cycle has survived in a private apartment in Rome. Largely unpublished and rarely mentioned in recent literature, the frescoes underwent a revelatory restoration in 2010-11. For the past three years, the author was granted exclusive access to study them thoroughly - resulting in this monograph. Accompanied by beautiful and full photographic documentation, this study aims to compare the painted images with the detailed description given by the biographer Giovan Pietro Bellori ; to shed light on the iconography and style, above all with respect to the sources used ; and to integrate this key commission within Sacchi's early career. The cycle's iconography is explored with careful verification of early sources that now allows us to resolve some particularly complex problems of interpretation - above all those relating to alchemy. Cardinal del Monte's Palazzo di Ripetta housed a fully equipped pharmacological laboratory. Research on this cycle of frescoes has also made it possible to discover new archival evidence regarding Sacchi's date and place of birth.

Just as I finished grabbing it, a sharp pain suddenly was erupting on the inside edge of my lair ! Simultaneously, a tension as unbearable as it was horrifying blocked me trying to pull me towards the surface. The kanakäs had just intercepted me through this lethal decoy ! So, with all my mass and was arching my body with all my strength in the opposite direction, I was regained some slack on this terribly resistant link, feeling all the mass of the platform preventing me from probing like the dontokä before. However, I was determined to show them which of us would be most worthy of remaining in the Incompressible, when with a devastating lateral movement, I severed with a sharp blow the lethal and imperceptible tether ! By this counter blow, I was as if immediately ejected : the perfidious artifact still embedded in my lair lying painfully like a relic of this ubiquitous creature of the System.

God's People: Instruments of Healing

The future impact of the churches on the societies in which they are situated depends on how they are experienced as healing and solidarizing communities (concerning their religious and social praxis) within themselves and to the outside. Exactly this is the question of the diaconical dimension of the church : the question of how much love (in terms of mercy and justice) and freedom (to the individual and to society) are being spread by the churches in this world. Theologically this book refers not only to the biblical foundations but also to the latest theology of the II Vatican Council (and of the appropriate understanding of the term "Evangelization") within the Catholic Church, without suggesting that this theological position is something exclusive in the ecumenical sphere. It rather may support similar theologies emerging from other churches, as a kind of offer to solidarize with each other looking for the possibilities of substantiating the Christian faith.

The review of the OHADA accounting system symbol of the evolution towards IFRS standards was the focus of this study. It is about understanding how business leaders perceive the evolution from OHADA standards to IFRS standards. To conduct this study, we opted for a qualitative approach. As a result, we did semi-direct interviews with twenty-five business leaders in Cameroun (18 Cameroonian business leaders and 7 multinational business leaders). The data collected was exploited through content analysis via NVivo10 software. However, the results show that the accounting innovations of SYSCOHADA allow the production and communication of more relevant accounting and financial information for users. Likewise, managers of multinational companies believe that OHADA must fully converge towards IFRS. This perception is contrast to that of Cameroonian business leaders who cite the contextual contrast as the main obstacle and therefore taking into account the specificities of this contrast will be an asset for full convergence towards IFRS.

The gay's and lesbians's rights in an enlarged European Union

During the last few years, gay and lesbian rights have reached the European Union human rights agenda and different instruments to combat discrimination have been adopted, which have had major implications for the gay and lesbian communities all over Europe, This volume focuses on less known and less studied aspects of these accomplishments. Its originality lies both in the multidisciplinary nature and the international approach of this project ; researchers from different universities throughout Europe (Brussels, Leiden, Stockholm, Athens, Ljubljana, Budapest, Bucharest, Paris and Krakow) and from different disciplines (law, political science, sociology and journalism) have contributed to this volume. Through case studies and theoretical reflection, the articles collected here aim at reinforcing the existing interest for the topic as well as offering an academic look at the subject, with a view to fostering scientific dialogue and contributing to the development of this field of research. The book is structured in three different parts, covering a broad spectrum of issues, among which : legal achievements on outlawing discrimination on sexual orientation within the European Union, the evolution of same-sex partnership and marriage, the accomplishments in the candidate countries. By providing a comprehensive overview of the aforementioned topics, this book can be appreciated by different categories of readers, from those interested in human rights to those working in the specific field of non-discrimination or studying the evolution of norms.

Raising Children Bilingually through the ‘One Parent-One Language’ Approach

Parents who come from different language backgrounds often hope that their children will be able to speak the languages of both their parents. In families where this is the goal, the ‘one parent-one language' approach (Ronjat, 1913) is widely used. The ‘one parent-one language' approach is relatively effective in promoting active bilingualism among young children in a society where there is little support for the minority language. However, there is a general perception that maintenance of the minority language into middle childhood and beyond is difficult as during this period children's contacts with the outside world expand and the input in the majority language increases. This book examines the sociolinguistic environment and the nature of parental input for children from Japanese-Australian families, who have been exposed to Japanese and English through the ‘one parent-one language' approach in Australia. The research on which the book is based identifies factors which account for successful and unsuccessful cases of Japanese language maintenance of children from those families. The major part of this study involves discourse analysis of the conversations between four Japanese mothers and their primary school aged children based on audio-recordings over a period of 21 months. This qualitative approach is complemented by a quantitative study interviewing 25 Japanese mothers about their children's language experience.

The Phenomenology of Freedom in Kleist's Die Familie Schroffenstein</I> and "Penthesilea</I>"

This study describes from an ontological perspective the foundation of freedom in two of Kleist's dramas. The novelty of this approach lies in the author's departure from the ontic considerations of freedom characterizing traditional Kleist scholarship. The present study advocates a de-construction of Kleist's concept of freedom back to its ontological basis : freedom is a cooperative enterprise of man and his situation. It is the author's contention that freedom in Kleist's works, rather than being defined by "a priori" categories, ensues primarily from the situation wherein it is being enacted. Man's relation to this situation is explored in a universal (Schroffenstein) and particular (Penthesilea) environment.

Après la mort tragique de sa mère et de sa tante, le jeune Wilmard Boudreau, qui a grandi à Berthierville, est venu habiter l'île Kanty, au cœur de l'archipel de Tête-à-la-Baleine, en Basse-Côte-Nord, en compagnie de son père, Anselme, et de sa cousine Hypoline. De tempérament rêveur, Wilmard est aussitôt attiré par les rumeurs qui courent dans la région concernant un de leurs voisins, le vieux Nayati, que l'on dit immortel mais aussi la proie d'une malédiction ancienne. Et puis il y a Taliana, l'une des domestiques de Nayati, qui attise son désir... Quand Hypoline découvre, en travaillant au jardin familial, le squelette d'un homme-oiseau au milieu duquel brille un pendentif, c'est Taliana qui, malgré les protestations de Wilmard, l'oblige à porter le bijou à son cou, une Taliana qui, aux yeux du jeune homme, s'intéresse beaucoup trop à sa cousine ! Depuis, Wilmard est inquiet et c'est pourquoi, en découvrant un soir le lit abandonné de sa cousine, il se lance aussitôt à sa recherche. Mais des forces mystérieuses venues d'un lointain passé imprègnent l'archipel, et Hypoline, à bord d'une barque guidée par les créatures marines, vogue vers son tragique destin... vers la colère de Sedna.

Qui est cet homme qui raconte ? Quel âge a-t-il ? Comment s'appelle-t-il ? Nous savons seulement que son nom pose problème, comme sa peau. Nous savons quand même beaucoup d'autres choses sur lui ! Par exemple que ses parents, Noirs, sont nés là-bas avant d'arriver en France pour brouter comme les gnous. Que lui-même est né en France, comme ses deux petites sœurs actuellement putes en Hollande et comme sa cousine, qui a de gros et beaux seins, qu'il aime malgré l'inceste. Qu'il a aimé la cousine de son ami le Malien, qu'ils ont d'abord violée, cet ami et lui. Qu'il a eu des relations avec l'une de ses petites sœurs, qu'il aurait même voulu en avoir avec sa pute de mère (ce n'est pas clair ! ). Qu'il adore cette mère et semble détester son putain de papa obsédé par l'idée de retourner mourir dans son pays natal malgré sa nouvelle nationalité tricolore ! Qu'il est devenu le proxénète de sa cousine et de sa nièce... Humour, ironie et cynisme dérangeront sans doute les antiracistes, les racistes et les victimes (ou prétendues victimes ?) du racisme. Place des Fêtes, y a la joie, toujours y a la joie !...
