Démographie et société
Depuis la révolution industrielle, la démographie des pays occidentaux présente une homogénéité certaine : baisses de la fécondité et de la mortalité, accroissement de l'espérance de vie, diminution du rythme de croissance de la population, accélération du vieillissement. Ce livre propose un exposé analytique et didactique particulièrement utile des causes de ces évolutions, et de leurs implications.

Si le thème de " la société " est très vaste, il ne peut qu'emporter des dimensions concernant des professeurs de grande école de commerce. Aussi avons-nous demandé à des professeurs et des chercheurs de nous proposer des ponts entre la thématique de " la société " et leurs connaissances en stratégie, en ressources humaines, en géopolitique, en finance, en économie. Ces actes sont le reflet d'une volonté de montrer les liens entre les études de classes préparatoires et le cursus en grande école de management. Reims Management School est un lieu dans lequel est réservée une large place aux arts, à la culture et à la pensée, y compris critique. En effet, face à la saturation des modèles et des courants dominants, nous devons exercer notre souplesse intellectuelle pour envisager l'inédit et cultiver notre agilité pour y faire face rapidement. Ce livre est le signe que la culture générale participe pleinement d'une bonne formation au management ; il est donc un lien, une passerelle, entre les étudiants de classes préparatoires, leurs professeurs de culture générale et les grandes écoles de commerce françaises.

On peut entrer dans le monde, y vivre, y travailler, y aimer, s'y adapter, laisser faire bon an mal an, et parler à ses amis de ce qu'on aurait voulu pour la société.
On peut aussi laisser les situations et les observations donner libre cours à des réflexions, qui peuvent grandir, jusqu'à ne plus tenir que par écrit.
Deux options confluent alors : étendre le cercle de ses amis et proposer une évolution. En partant de ce que chacun peut expérimenter, un livre se présente, à la fois réformateur et consensuel, ouvert et dérangeant.
Il invite à la construction d'une société neuve dont le schéma organisateur révèle enfin la bienveillance. Et si c'était vrai ? Si c'était la solution ?

Je de société
JE, son diplôme en poche, est en poste à La City, à Londres. Un poste peu épanouissant, pour ne pas dire totalement déprimant. JE décide de démissionner et de rentrer en France pour renouer avec son rêve, celui de faire du cinéma. Son objectif est simple : trouver un travail qui lui offrira un ratio temps/argent suffisamment équilibré pour lui permettre de se consacrer à sa carrière sur grand écran. Et dès son arrivée à Paris, JE joue. Sauf que le jeu ne se fait pas exactement comme on pourrait l'imaginer, JE se retrouve à jouer dans un immense jeu de société, sous forme de jeu de l'oie, avec en guise de cases, des contrats sociaux (CDI, CDD, intérim, etc.). Et, avec détermination, JE va jouer le jeu.

Ce livre ne désigne pas des coupables ni ne proclame que rien ne sera plus comme avant. Il cherche à comprendre de l'intérieur l'univers étrange dans lequel nous vivons. Partant de l'expérience de la maladie, il montre comment l'épreuve du réel a été d'emblée recouverte d'un flux d'images et de paroles anxiogènes. Selon l'expression de René Leriche, la santé c'est "la vie dans le silence des organes" . C'est aussi, selon l'OMS, "un état de complet bien-être physique, mental et social qui ne consiste pas seulement en une absence de maladie ou d'infirmité" . Les déterminants sociaux mais aussi les conditions de travail - physiques ou psychologiques - pèsent lourdement sur la santé. La santé publique a ainsi contribué à l'allongement de l'espérance de vie, mais désormais l'amélioration de l'environnement, la lutte contre les pollutions, les inégalités sociales sont des enjeux de santé publique. Sont aussi traités, entre autres, au sein de cet ouvrage le principe de l'autonomie et du consentement des patients, l'énorme progrès des technologies qui impose d'accompagner la science par un surplus de conscience. Cet ouvrage est le fruit des contributions des académiciens et de personnalités invitées au cours de cette année de réflexion sur le concept de pouvoir et ses manifestations.

Thackeray and the Problem of Realism
Although it is traditional to see a certain kind of "realism" as the essence of fiction, in practice novels of course offer not a simple reproduction of experience but a throughgoing organization of it. The novel is, after all, a bourgeois genre and it reflects that bourgeois view of life according to which the world is there merely to be dominated and controlled by man. This study examines both Thackeray's early fiction, in which both the novel form and the manipulative society to which it belongs are attacked, and his later works, in which they are defended, and tries to determine the reasons for this change.

Polish Psychological Verbs at the Lexicon-Syntax Interface in Cross-linguistic Perspective
This book is a comparative study of Polish psychological verbs. The analysis concentrates on the lexicon-syntax interface of psych verbs, and constitutes an argument in favour of its strong dependence on event structure. The aim of this study is to show that the class of Polish psych verbs, as in many other languages, is not uniform. The analysed subclasses are differentiated on the basis of their causation and stativity. The marriage of those semantic traits and their structural representation is possible only if it is performed via event structure configuration, a layer which appears to underlie the conceptualisation of events.

Traditional historical narratives dismiss exile, outlawry, and banishment as ineffective and weak methods of maintaining social order. Late-Imperial Russia: An Interpretation
Late-Imperial Russia deals with some of the great questions of modern Russian history. It uses methods of intellectual history, political economy, ethnography and quantitative history to analyse the Peasant Question in late- Imperial Russia. A study of ideas in action, the book is unique in letting all key participants speak : the intelligentsia, the state and the peasantry. It analyses their opinions, rôles and actions, explaining understandings of the fate of the peasants and the future of Russia. Key intellectual, political, demographic and socio-economic trends are assessed in tandem. Late-Imperial Russia is revealed as a deeply-divided society of three visions and two cultures, each dismissing and misconceiving the other. This unusual contrast of the cultures, ideas and actions of the state, the peasantry and the intelligentsia shows who really wielded power in the crucial decades between the Emancipation and the Revolution. Cross-cultural misunderstandings emerging in the last decades of the Imperial era helped shape the instabilities of the Revolutions of 1917-1921 and their Stalinist aftermath.

Quelle heure est-il ? ou Regard sur la Société. Combien de fois ne posons-nous pas la question " Quelle heure est-il " : à la maison, au bureau, à la ville, à la campagne ? Notre vie est ponctuée par l'heure : il est l'heure de se lever, il est l'heure de se coucher, de prendre l'avion, le train. Il faut être présent à tel ou tel rendez-vous. Notre vie nous impose d'être à l'heure et nos yeux se fixent sur la pendulette ou l'horloge du beffroi. C'est ainsi qu'agités nous vivons. Et le temps passe... Si, avec beaucoup d'attention, nous vivons à " l'heure du jour ", nous sommes moins disposés à scruter " l'heure de notre temps " et moins encore enclins à vivre selon " l'heure de notre vie ". Mais quelle heure est-il aujourd'hui ?

La lutte contre le terrorisme : ses acquis et ses défis. Liber Amicorum Gilles de Kerchove, Textes en français et anglais
Ce Liber Amicorum, qui rend hommage à Gilles de Kerchove, coordinateur de l'Union européenne pour la lutte contre le terrorisme de 2007 à 2021, dresse le bilan de ce qui a été mené dans ce secteur ces dernières années et se penche également sur les défis à venir. Après une introduction retraçant le parcours du récipiendaire, la première partie se penche sur différents aspects de la coopération au sein de l'Union européenne, allant du mandat d'arrêt européen, à la protection des droits fondamentaux en passant par le rôle de certaines institutions ou agences de l'UE. La deuxième partie traite de la coopération entre l'UE et le reste du monde, qu'il s'agisse d'organisations mondiales ou de certains Etats en particulier, comme les Etats-Unis. La troisième partie, plus transversale, rassemble des contributions diverses touchant notamment à l'Etat islamique, au financement du terrorisme, aux victimes et aux nouvelles technologies. L'ouvrage se clôt par une quatrième partie relative à la prévention, à la lutte contre la radicalisation, aux valeurs, à la liberté de la presse et à la littérature. Les auteurs, issus de diverses parties du monde, présentent des profils très divers, parmi lesquels d'éminentes figures politiques, des fonctionnaires européens, des académiques, des magistrats et des journalistes. L'ouvrage a été coordonné par Dr. Christiane Höhn, Conseillère principale de Gilles de Kerchove, Isabel Saavedra, son Assistante personnelle et Prof. Anne Weyembergh, Professeur ordinaire à l'Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). This Liber Amicorum, which pays tribute to Gilles de Kerchove, EU counter-terrorism coordinator from 2007 to 2021, takes stock of what has been achieved in this field in recent years and looks at the challenges ahead. After an introduction tracing the recipient's background, the first part looks at different aspects of cooperation within the European Union, ranging from the European arrest warrant, to the protection of fundamental rights and the role of certain EU institutions or agencies. The second part deals with cooperation between the EU and the rest of the world, both with global organisations and with specific States, such as the United States. The third, cross-cutting part brings together various contributions relating to the Islamic State, the financing of terrorism, victims and new technologies. The book concludes with a fourth part on prevention, the fight against radicalisation, values, freedom of the press and literature. The authors come from various parts of the world and present a wide range of profiles, including prominent political figures, EU officials, academics, magistrates and journalists. The book was coordinated by Dr. Christiane Höhn, Principal Advisor to Gilles de Kerchove, Isabel Saavedra, his Personal Assistant and Prof. Anne Weyembergh, Professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB).

The Search for Lyonnesse
Although Mme de Lafayette is acknowledged as the founder of the modern novel, her precise legacy has been understood only in relation to male-authored texts. However, she wrote as a woman, addressing issues that concerned women of her day, particularly the problem of the apparent incompatibility of sexual fulfilment and the institution of marriage. This study seeks to identify how La Princesse de Clèves was interpreted by three of Mme de Lafayette's most talented women successors and to show how their more sombre and subversive view of society was mediated in works of fiction which have strong affinities with the contes de fées for which they are well known. The novels of Mlle Bernard, Mme d'Aulnoy and Mlle de La Force are significant, not simply for what they tell us about themselves as women writers but also for what they reveal about the origins of the eighteenth-century novel.

God's People: Instruments of Healing
The future impact of the churches on the societies in which they are situated depends on how they are experienced as healing and solidarizing communities (concerning their religious and social praxis) within themselves and to the outside. Exactly this is the question of the diaconical dimension of the church : the question of how much love (in terms of mercy and justice) and freedom (to the individual and to society) are being spread by the churches in this world. Theologically this book refers not only to the biblical foundations but also to the latest theology of the II Vatican Council (and of the appropriate understanding of the term "Evangelization") within the Catholic Church, without suggesting that this theological position is something exclusive in the ecumenical sphere. It rather may support similar theologies emerging from other churches, as a kind of offer to solidarize with each other looking for the possibilities of substantiating the Christian faith.

"On liberty" by John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), one of the most versatile thinkers of the nineteenth century, wrote on the newly emerging sciences of economics, politics and sociology. His Principles of Political Economy (1848) ran to many editions and is still read today, while his book on Utilitarianism (1863) is better known than the writings of Jeremy Bentham. On Liberty (1859) was written at a time when the Industrial Revolution, the rise of a sizeable middle class and its social influence, the growing democratisation of British politics raised questions about the place of individuals and the dangers of this new mass society. The future was to prove him right, and his defence of freedom of thought and speech, of individuality and originality, later used to criticise the various instances totalitarianism in the twentieth century, is still relevant these days.

The German Effect on D.H. Lawrence and his Works 1885-1912
This study analyzes in depth the German effect upon D.H. Lawrence and his works from his birth in 1885 to his departure from England in 1912. German literary, philosophical and musical works had considerable impact on Lawrence's formation as an artist. They also influenced the creation of his own literary theory, entering his life concurrently with the three problems of class, woman and religion, which evolved into his major literary themes. The German effect is thus demonstrated to be the confirmation of Lawrence's strong tendency toward subjectivism in literary art : it strengthened his conviction that his art set him apart from all classes of society ; it encouraged the development of his view of women as the sexual, not the maternal, mediatrix to art ; and it fortified his denial of traditional Christianity and assisted his creation of his personal vitalistic creed.
