Actualité d'André-Jean Tudesq. Avec 1 CD-ROM
André-Jean Tudesq (1927-2009) a été un travailleur infatigable. Auteur d'une thèse d'Etat sur Les grands notables en France (1840-1849) qui a fait date, il a été pionnier dans l'ouverture d'un nouveau champ d'études, celui des médias africains. Historien de formation, il a accompagné les fondateurs d'une nouvelle discipline : les Sciences de l'information et de la communication qu'il a inlassablement défendue tout en restant professeur d'Histoire contemporaine. Il nous a légué une bibliographie impressionnante et a formé des générations d'enseignants, en France comme en Afrique ou au Proche Orient. Au-delà d'un colloque très riche, tenu en 2011 sur le campus bordelais où il a passé la plus grande partie de sa carrière d'enseignant, l'ouvrage transcrit l'essentiel des interventions de ceux qui furent des collègues, disciples et proches. Il est complété par une bibliographie importante et un CD-Rom. On y trouve des textes épuisés ou inédits, des interventions à la radio, des documents variés qui permettent de mieux connaître la richesse de ses productions et l'actualité de ses questionnements qui demeurent sources et ressources d'enseignement, de référence pour le présent.

deValence is a graphic design studio founded in Paris in 2001. Published on the occasion of its exhibition at kyoto ddd gallery, this book presents a selection of works designed in the field of theater, architecture, design, publishing and contemporary art. deValence pays particular attention to typography and the process of shape forming. In tandem with this prolific activity, the studio has an associated publishing house, B42, which produces works that seek to stimulate reflection on and discussion of visual cultures and design as well as the role of the designer in society. For this first solo exhibition in Japan dedicated to the studio, the kyoto ddd gallery is presenting a selection of the studio's projects illustrating its contribution to the renewal of contemporary graphic design.

The Dramatic Encounter of Divine and Human Freedom in the Theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar
This book surveys the major theological writings of Hans Urs von Balthasar from the perspective of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom. The first part examines Balthasar's early treatment of the question in the context of the analogy of being. The second part concentrates on his more mature work, the Theological Dramatics, with its understanding of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom in terms of a 'dramatic encounter' in which, controversially, human freedom is thought to actively participate in an ever-greater exchange of love in God. But this book is more than a survey. Observing the persistence of the 'analogy of proportionality' within the Dramatics leads the author in the third part to a critique of Balthasar's thought. It is argued that the continuation of the earlier perspective explains Balthasar's emphasis on the freedom of the individual to the neglect of social structures and their transformation. While the 'historical' as such is not neglected, as some claim it is, the focus is on the history of the individual and his or her relationship with God. It is therefore contended that Balthasar's theology of the Trinity is more concerned with 'interpersonal' relationships than truly 'social' ones and that this is what inhibits a fruitful dialogue with social theologies.

Hidden dividend distributions & hidden capital contributions, 2e édition. A technical guide
Luxembourg companies have a legal personality that is separate from that of their shareholder(s). Consequently, they may enter into agreements with their shareholders as they do with third parties. However, when the terms and conditions of those agreements do not adhere to the arm's length standard, tax adjustments may be required in accordance with the concepts of hidden dividend distribution and hidden capital contribution. Both concepts aim at a separation of the sphere of the company (which is itself subject to corporate income tax on its worldwide income) from that of its shareholders. As such, the concepts of hidden dividend distribution and hidden capital contribution are cornerstones of Luxembourg's transfer pricing rules. In addition, in the context of associated enterprises (in a group of companies), tax adjustments might be required under Article 56 of the Luxembourg Income Tax Law ("LITL"). Hence, a clear distinction must be made between agreements that adhere to the arm's length principle and agreements that, motivated by the shareholding relationship, shift advantages from the company to the shareholder or vice versa. Therefore, each contractual relationship between a company and its shareholder(s) must be considered. Luxembourg tax law does not provide for exhaustive definitions of hidden dividend distributions and hidden capital contributions. Both concepts have their origins in case law of the German Reich Tax Court (Reichsfinanzhof) and have been carefully extended and refined through the years by the German Federal Tax Court (Bundesfinanzhof). Since the publication of the first edition of this book back in 2011, the Luxembourg Courts had to decide in numerous cases involving both concepts. This book offers a one-of-a-kind, practical insight into the tax treatment of hidden dividend distributions, hidden capital contributions and triangular cases. Charts, case studies and checklists aid the reader in identifying and assessing the various cases in which hidden dividend distributions and hidden capital contributions may arise. A new chapter with practical case studies considers situations that may occur in the context of multinational groups, Luxembourg alternative funds and individual shareholders. WHY SEX MATTERS. A Darwinian Look at Human Behavior
Why are men, like other primate usually the aggressors and risk takers? Why do women typically have fewer sexual partners? Why is killing infants routine in some cultures, but forbidden in others? Why is incest everywhere taboo? Bobbi Low ranges from ancient Rome to modern America, from the Amazon to the Arctic, and from single-celled organisms to international politics to show that these and many other questions about human behavior largely come down to evolution and sex. More precisely, as she shows in this uniquely comprehensive and accessible survey of behavioral and evolutionary ecology, they come down to the basic principle that all organisms evolved to maximize their reproductive success and seek resources to do so.
Low begins by reviewing the fundamental arguments and assumptions of behavioral ecology: selfish genes, conflicts of interest, and the tendency for sexes to reproduce through different behaviors. She explains why in primate species-from chimpanzees and apes to humans-males seek to spread their genes by devoting extraordinary efforts to finding mates, while females find it profitable to expend more effort on parenting. Low illustrates these sexual differences among humans by showing that in places as diverse as the parishes of nineteenth-century Sweden, the villages of seventeenth-century China, and the forests of twentieth-century Brasil, men have tended to seek power and resources, from cattle to money, to attract mates, while women have sought a secure environment for raising children. She makes it clear, however, they have not done so simply through individual efforts or in a vacuum, but that men and women act in complex ways that involve cooperation and coalition building and that are shaped by culture, technology, tradition, and the availability of resources. Low also considers how file evolutionary drive to
acquire resources leads to environmental degradation and warfare and asks whether our behavior could be channeled in more constructive ways.

Sciences du design N° 13, 2021 : Expériences vécues de design
La notion d'expérience renvoie à deux sens distincts. D'une part elle est un vécu situé, cognitif et affectif d'ordre phénoménologique (concept d'Erlebnis) ; d'autre part elle agrège l'ensemble des processus interactionnels qui constituent notre relation avec le monde dans la durée, et les compétences ainsi acquises (concept d'Erfahrung). Dans la première acception, l'expérience est immédiate et incarnée, alors que la seconde représente la cristallisation d'une somme d'expériences événementielles. Cette dualité crée un jeu de tensions entre le vécu, son appropriation et son intégration au fil du temps. Dans le champ du design, cette tension est au coeur des démarches de recherche-action, recherche-projet (Findeli, 2005), recherche création (Bruneau et Villeneuve, 2007 ; Lancri, 2001 ; Léchot Hirt, 2010) ou encore de constructive design research (Koskinen et al., 2011). Nourries de pragmatisme, ces approches reconnaissent que notre compréhension du monde n'émerge pas de purs examens rationnels, mais d'un contact sensible et intime avec celui-ci (Dewey, 2005 ; Hennion, 2007). C'est en rendant compte de la multiplicité des expériences vécues que l'on surmonte le dualisme entre théorie et pratique (Dewey, 2005 ; Thibaud et Thomas, 2004). Mais si l'expérience est vécue comme intériorité, conciliant l'émotionnel, le corporel et l'intellectuel (Dewey, 1934/2005), nul individu n'agit de manière isolée. La science de la complexité et l'approche systémique ont amené des outils pour comprendre et modéliser les interrelations entre acteurs (Morin, 1990 ; Le Moigne, 2005). Les designers, en particulier, s'insèrent dans des projets faisant intervenir de multiples parties prenantes impliquées dans la conception comme dans la réception des propositions. Ce dossier propose un questionnement des expériences vécues de design, à partir des contextes d'intervention, des processus, des acteurs et des interactions. Plus que la structure ou la gestion de projet, il s'agit d'étudier des expériences vécues de design, c'est-à-dire d'actions ou de relations des acteurs impliqués ou impactés, dans leurs temporalités ou dynamiques, au sein du projet comme dans ses externalités.

In Each Child Is My Only One : Lotte Carlebach-Preuss, the Portrait of a Mother and Rabbi's Wife, Miriam Gillis-Carlebach, the daughter of Rabbi Dr. Joseph Zvi Carlebach (1883–1942), last Chief Rabbi of Hamburg and its surroundings, describes her childhood in the lively household of a rabbi's family with nine children, focusing on the special personality of her mother, Lotte Carlebach, née Preuss (1900–1942). The book starts with the history of the Preuss family, goes on to describe the marriage of Lotte to Joseph Carlebach, and portrays in detail their dynamic family life – until their deportation with their four youngest children to a Latvian concentration camp in 1942. The book is composed of two main parts. In the first section the reader learns about the events up to 1938, both inside and outside the Carlebach home ; the second section covers the years 1938–1941, in which there was a lively correspondence mainly between the mother and those of her children who succeeded in emigrating from Nazi Germany. This part concludes with several testimonies portraying the special personalities of Rabbi Carlebach and his wife and their devotion to the unfortunate who benefited from their unbounded assistance and altruism during the Holocaust. Many photographs are included in the book, several of them taken by Lotte Carlebach herself. The book is a unique and personal testimony about Jewish life in Germany during the years of persecution that relentlessly led to the conflagration of the Holocaust.

This volume provides a comprehensive study of widowhood in Medieval Britain based on literary and historical sources from the seventh to the fifteenth centuries. The book is divided into two parts : the first deals with the Anglo-Saxon period, the second with the Medieval period. Because widows shared certain preoccupations specific to their status, the two parts deal with similar topics : the fundamental role played by the Church in the doctrine of marriage, and the dominant male discourse about widows. Widows had a specific legal status : special laws affected their lives and their relationships with their children and other relatives. Child and Nation. A Study of Political Socialisation and Banal Nationalism in France and England
Where do feelings of national belonging come from ? Why is it that this belonging often seems both fundamental and banal, both intangible and omnipresent ? This book argues that the answers to these questions lie in childhood and the socialisation to the nation that we experience as children. It suggests that the banality of our own everyday nationalism is due to the fact that we have spent our lives learning to take it for granted. Just as our first understandings of reality are learned during childhood socialisation, so nationhood and national belonging are internalised as natural and necessary from the very beginning of our lives. The specific nature of this early socialisation is what confers upon banal nationalism its characteristic combination of omnipresence, inscrutability and self-evidence. To try and get around this self-evidence and explore this socialisation and its results, this study has adopted an innovative methodology involving semi-directive projective interviews with young children in France and England. This book presents an analysis of how this early socialisation to the nation plays out on young children's visions of national belonging and its justifications and implications. It also looks at what this transmission in childhood means for nationalism as an ideology and the power and pertinence of the nation today.

Le Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, fondé en 2006, distingue chaque année cinq architectes qui partagent les principes du développement durable et d'une approche participative de l'architecture aux besoins des sociétés, au nord comme au sud de la planète. L'édition 2022 avait pour thème : "Le territoire : menace ou opportunité ? " A cette question cruciale, les lauréats choisis par le jury scientifique ont répondu à l'unisson : "La plus grande opportunité ! " Martin Rauch (Autriche), pionnier de la construction en terre, déclare le territoire comme sa première ressource. Dorte Mandrup (Danemark), Ömer Selkuc Baz et Okan Bal (Turquie) se nourrissent de l'Histoire et des histoires qui ont modelé les territoires sur lesquels ils travaillent. Anupama Kundoo (Inde) travaille avec le territoire, mais surtout avec ses habitants, leur savoir-faire et la force de leurs rêves. Le paysagiste Gilles Clément (France) transforme poétiquement chaque territoire, avec un minimum de gestes, en faisant confiance au vivant. Every year, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, which was founded in 2006, honours five architects who share the principles of sustainable development and a participative architectural approach to the needs of the societies of both the Global North and the Global South. The subject of the 2022 edition was "The territory : threat or opportunity ? " - a vital question that the award winners selected by the scientific jury responded to in unison with the answer : "The greatest possible opportunity ! " Martin Rauch (Austria), a pioneer of clay building, declares that territory is his primary resource. Dorte Mandrup (Denmark), Ömer Selkuc Baz and Okan Bal (Turkey) are inspired by History and the stories which have shapes territories on which they work. Anupama Kundoo (India) works with the territory but, above all, with its inhabitants, their savoir-faire and the power of their dreams. Landscape architect Gilles Clément (France) poetically transforms each territory with a minimum of intervention and by trusting in the living.

Aspects of the syntax of educated Singaporean English
This work consists of a collection of eight papers on the syntax of English as spoken and written by educated Singaporeans. The topics dealt with include various aspects of verb-phrase structure and use, comparative constructions, and relative pronoun selection. Some of the papers are dialectological in focus and some theoretical, but all were researched through questionnaire-based interviews and/or examination of bodies of written material. Eleven Singapore researchers collaborated with the editor in this project.

Many people have heard two things about Archimedes: He was the greatest mathematician of antiquity and he ran naked from his bath crying, "Eureka, eureka!" Few of us, layperson or mathematician, are familiar with the accomplishments on which his reputation rests. This book describes in detail those astonishing accomplishments: how he
developed the theory of the lever and the center of gravity; how he used the center of gravity to study whether a floating object would tip over; how he summed a geometric series and the squares; and how he found the volume and surface area of a sphere. His ability to do so much with the few tools at his disposal is astonishing. He was like a one-person Institute for Advanced Study, making fundamental discoveries in the fields of geometry, mechanics and hydrostatics.
The exposition is leisurely and supported by a brief life of Archimedes and some 120 illustrations. Any reader who is aware that the graph of y = x2 is a parabola can follow all the reasoning. Although the book uses only high school mathematics, professional mathematicians will find much here of interest as well.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon disparaît pendant la campagne présidentielle de 2022. Il est remplacé par un hologramme qui échappe aussitôt à son modèle. Pendant que toute la presse cherche le chef de la France insoumise, l'avatar, désormais surnommé Machin par le président de la République lui-même, tient en meeting des propos que ne renierait pas le Rassemblement national. Les sondages grimpent aussitôt en faveur de LFI ... Machin est un polar politique qui parle de la folie des médias et des réseaux sociaux ; une dystopie qui souligne les faiblesses de la société française saisie par la violence et l'extrémisme, sur fond d'anecdotes et de portraits de responsables de partis - les vrais - et de journalistes - les vrais aussi, dans la pratique de leurs métiers. Machin, c'est un peu Zemmour, avant l'heure, ou juste après !

Fiction and Autobiography
Both the postmodern debate about the "death of the author" and cultural debates about constructing identities (national, socio-political, cultural, ethnic, sexual, etc.) have led to multiple attempts at redefining autobiography, traditionally predicated on concepts of identity and truth. By bringing together twenty-seven case studies of autobiographical texts from over four centuries and from a variety of cultural (mainly Anglophone) backgrounds, this book demonstrates how fruitful a critical focus on the interaction between autobiography and fiction proves for understanding the complex strategies by which subject positions are established and communicated. Borders and Ecotones in the Indian Ocean. Cultural and Literary Perspectives, Textes en français et anglais
This collection of critical essays anchors itself in the Indian Ocean and explores the multiple ways dynamic exchanges have shaped this multilingual region of the world, from India to the Mascarene Islands to Southern Africa. Borders, edges and third spaces are revisited through the notion of the ecotone, a transitional zone between two ecosystems. If the term has primarily been used by biologists and ecologists, the metaphorical angle proves to be fruitful as it authorizes transdisciplinary approaches and empowers fresh perspectives. In French and in English, this volume aims to contribute to scholarship already published across various disciplinary fields and to participate in the development of Indoceanic studies. The authors of the volume rethink those ecotonal sites that are spaces of frictions as much as spaces of fusion. Les essais critiques réunis dans ce volume prennent leur ancrage dans l'océan Indien et explorent les multiples façons dont la dynamique des échanges a formé cette région multilingue, de l'Inde aux Mascareignes et en Afrique australe. Frontières, lisières et tiers-espaces sont revisités à travers la notion d'écotone, une zone de transition entre deux écosystèmes. Si le terme a été surtout utilisé par les biologistes et les écologistes, l'angle métaphorique s'avère particulièrement fertile en ce qu'il autorise des approches transdisciplinaires et rend possibles des perspectives nouvelles. En anglais et en français, ce volume vise à enrichir la recherche déjà publiée dans plusieurs champs disciplinaires et à participer au développement des études indo-océaniques. Les auteurs du volume réexaminent ces écotones comme des espaces de frictions autant que des espaces de fusion.
