Alors que les derniers combattants de 14-18 viennent de disparaître, La beauté et la douleur des combats donne à voir ce que fut la Première Guerre mondiale au jour le jour et en renouvelle l'histoire. On y suit en effet vingt individus, tous inconnus ou oubliés, tous au bas de la hiérarchie (fonctionnaire, engagé volontaire, infirmière, écolière, aventurier) mais qui tous ont laissé un témoignage. Alors que la Grande Guerre est devenue synonyme des tranchées du front franco-allemand, la plupart d'entre eux évoluent sur d'autres théâtres, comme le front de l'Est, les Alpes, les Balkans, l'Afrique orientale et la Mésopotamie. Beaucoup sont jeunes, une vingtaine d'années seulement. En dépit de leur diversité, ils sont unis par le fait que la guerre leur vole quelque chose : la jeunesse, les illusions, l'espoir, la foi en l'humanité - la vie. Sur ces vingt, trois vont être tués, deux tomberont en captivité, deux seront fêtés en héros, deux finiront réduits à l'état d'épave. Plusieurs accueillent favorablement la guerre quand elle éclate mais apprennent à la détester ; quelques-uns la détestent dès le premier jour ; l'un d'eux l'aime du début à la fin. Un autre finira littéralement fou et échouera dans un hôpital psychiatrique, un autre encore n'entendra pas tirer un seul coup de feu. Et ainsi de suite dans une perpétuelle oscillation entre une fascination pour l'étrange beauté des combats et une profonde douleur. Si presque tous vont vivre des événements dramatiques et effroyables, Peter Englund met plutôt l'accent sur les caractères, les sentiments, les expériences et les atmosphères. Puritan Attitudes towards Recreation in early Seventeenth-Century New England
The interdisciplinary approach of this study tries to bridge a gap in the field of Puritan Studies, the one between the two camps of intellectual and social science historians. Focusing on the attitudes of the early Puritan church members in New England towards sport and recreation in general, the book attemps to show the differences between Puritan theory and New England reality. At no point in their history were the Puritan leaders able to enforce their secular and ecclesiastical laws. Even within the leadership itself a wide spectrum of opinions on recreation existed. The Puritan preachers reacted to this dilemma in their hortatory sermons, the jeremiads, which were employed to shame the younger generations into comformity by inventing the myth of the godly founding fathers. But the Puritan utopia was condemned to failure from the very start : the church members could not resist temptation.

The History of German Lutheran Congregations in England, 1900-1950
Between 1900 and 1950, the development of German congregations in England was characterised by sudden unprecedented changes. Growth was followed by decline, marginalisation by expansion. The situation during and after World War I contrasted sharply with that during and after World War II. Being drawn into the German Church struggle German congregations in England experienced the conflict between nationalistic and ecumenical attitudes. They were challenged in particular by Bonhoeffer's theological stance and became a meeting-place for different cultural, political and spiritual traditions. World War II saw a new emphasis on the ministry among German-speaking refugees, as well as among civilian internees and military prisoners.

Languages of Exile
Languages of Exile examines the relationship between geographic and linguistic border crossings in twentieth-century literature. Like no period before it, the last century was marked by the experience of expatriation, forcing exiled writers to confront the fact of linguistic difference. Literary writing can be read as the site where that confrontation is played out aesthetically – at the intersection between native and acquired language, between indigenous and alien, between self and other – in a complex multilingual dynamic specific to exile and migration. The essays collected here explore this dynamic from a comparative perspective, addressing the paragons of modernism as well as less frequently studied authors, from Joseph Conrad and Peter Weiss to Agota Kristof and Malika Mokeddem. The essays are international in their approach ; they deal with the junctions and gaps between English, French, German, Hungarian, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and other languages. The literary works and practices addressed include modernist poetry and prose, philosophical criticism and autobiography, DADA performance, sound art and experimental music theatre. This volume reveals both the wide range of creative strategies developed in response to the interstitial situation of exile and the crucial role of exile for a renewed understanding of twentieth-century literature.

Child and Nation. A Study of Political Socialisation and Banal Nationalism in France and England
Where do feelings of national belonging come from ? Why is it that this belonging often seems both fundamental and banal, both intangible and omnipresent ? This book argues that the answers to these questions lie in childhood and the socialisation to the nation that we experience as children. It suggests that the banality of our own everyday nationalism is due to the fact that we have spent our lives learning to take it for granted. Just as our first understandings of reality are learned during childhood socialisation, so nationhood and national belonging are internalised as natural and necessary from the very beginning of our lives. The specific nature of this early socialisation is what confers upon banal nationalism its characteristic combination of omnipresence, inscrutability and self-evidence. To try and get around this self-evidence and explore this socialisation and its results, this study has adopted an innovative methodology involving semi-directive projective interviews with young children in France and England. This book presents an analysis of how this early socialisation to the nation plays out on young children's visions of national belonging and its justifications and implications. It also looks at what this transmission in childhood means for nationalism as an ideology and the power and pertinence of the nation today.

Sociolinguistic reflexes of dialect interference in West Wirral
Studies of the phonology of urban language varieties in the Labovian vein have generally concentrated on structural and statistical differentiation along the "standard"-"non-standard" dimension. In this work the author reports the results of an attempt to apply the relevant methodology and theory to a more complex situation involving the encroachment of an extraneous vernacular on a formerly rural area in England where prestige standard forms are also well represented. The dialectological findings are described in some detail, and innovatory perspectives on various methodological and theoretical issues are developed.

Syntactic Variation and Unconscious Linguistic Change
By examining adjectival relative clauses in the dialect of Dorset, in the Southwest of England, this volume illustrates how contemporary British dialects can contribute to our understanding of (unconscious) linguistic change. The analysis, which is based upon tape-recorded interviews with numerous informants, as well as written dialect imitations extracted from a variety of sources, shows that dialectal relativization is governed by an intricate network of both linguistic and non-linguistic (i.e. regional, social, stylistic) factors. The corpus has been incorporated in its entirety and perfectly lends itself for further dialectological research.

900 Years of St Bartholomew's. The History, Art and Architecture of London's Oldest Parish Church
This important book presents a comprehensive history of St Bartholomew the Great, the oldest parish church in London. In 2023, the Priory Church and Hospital will celebrate the 900th anniversary of their foundation. At the heart of the Smithfield area, with its hospital, pubs, restaurants and market, is a church built when Henry I, son of William the Conqueror, was King of England. Overlooking the fields where kings confronted rebellions, knights jousted and heretics were burnt, St Bartholomew's Priory and Hospital played a central role in the history of medieval London. Its splendid Romanesque core has been added to by each successive generation. This volume - the first comprehensive history of the Church since 1921 - will survey the art, architecture and historical significance of the City of London's oldest parish church in a scholarly, yet accessible tone. C'est ce que peut croire un moment Adam Dalgliesh, le policier et poète bien connu des lecteurs d'Un certain goût pour la mort et autres enquêtes mémorables. Mais, au gré d'une investigation délicate dans l'ambiance très old England de la maison, c'est vers une tout autre piste qu'il va s'orienter.

This collection of articles shows that some media products ought to carry a mental health warning : Some school books still contain simplistic presentations of England and Germany. English and German journalists admit that the entertainment value of their articles sometimes takes precedence over impartial reporting. English children's books may contain a reasonable mixture of good and bad Germans but some wartime films needed more sinister types for propaganda. "Made in Germany" originated in English legislation as a label against German competition but became a German marketing tool. A minister in Margaret Thatcher's cabinet made unprintable remarks about Germany. When they were printed, the Ridley Affair proved to be the beginning of the downfall of Britain's controversial Prime Minister.

The Anglo-Welsh Dialects of North Wales
This book is the first major study of the English spoken in North Wales. It presents a full description of the English speech of the native 60-plus age group in the counties of Gwynedd and Clwyd. It includes a comprehensive analysis of the vowel sounds and non-standard consonant sounds of northern Anglo-Welsh, together with exhaustive descriptions of non-standard lexis and morphology and syntax. It forms part of the survey of Anglo-Welsh Dialects and can be seen as a companion to Volumes 1 and 2 of that survey. The book also contains a short atlas section, etymologies of non-standard lexis, and cross-references to the main national surveys of regional spoken English and Welsh in England and Wales.

Cross and Crown in Barbados
During the late 19th century, Caribbean society was generally controlled by the local plantocracy and the colonial administration of the Europeans. Barbados was so much the pride of the British colonies in the Caribbean that it was called "Little England". The life-blood of the society, the Black labouring classes, reaped very little of the social and economic benefits from the Sugar industry which the White planter-class owned and controlled. The Church was also controlled by the planter-class, and it functioned effectively to sustain a pattern of rigid social containment, and to work consistently for the maintenance of the status quo. Political religion in Barbados was therefore an engine of social control of the poor Blacks by the rich Whites. Cross and Crown together created "peace" and poverty.

Integral Bridges. A fundamental approach to the time-temperature loading problem
Integral bridges have become increasingly popular in the UK over recent years. Problems and costs associated with failed expansion joints in conventional bridges not only make integral bridges a cost-effective option but also means they have longer lifespans that their counterparts. The Highways Agency standards now require that, wherever possible, all new bridges of less than 60 m length should be of integral form.
The growing importance of integral bridges has highlighted the need for more information and guidance to assist in improving bridge design. This book presents the results of research commissioned by the Highways Agency into the thermally induced soil/structure interaction created by environmental temperature changes and the associated cyclical displacements imposed on the granular backfill of bridge abutments. It :
develops a better theoretical understanding of temperature-induced cyclic displacements ; in particular the strain ratcheting in backfill soil in contact with a 'stiff' structure, identifies the governing soil parameters and examines their influence, develops numerical modelling procedures to predict soil behaviour, identifies and quantifies the controlling features of bridge structures relevant to the interaction problem
This book provides essential information for bridge designers to aid their understanding of the cyclical changes in backfill pressures and settlement due to diurnal and annual changes in bridge deck temperature - a crucial factor when designing integral bridges.
