The twelve lessons forming this volume were originally issued in the shape of monthly lessons, known as "The Advanced Course in Yogi Philosophy and Oriental Occultism" during a period of twelve months beginning with October 1904, and ending September 1905. Eugène Courmeaux (1817-1902). Un républicain démocrate au XIXe siècle
Hervé Paul, né à Reims en 1952, effectue la plus grande partie de sa carrière professionnelle dans l’industrie pharmaceutique. Il a exercé deux mandats de conseiller municipal dans une commune de l’agglomération rémoise. Passionné d’Histoire et de sa ville de Reims, il est l’auteur d’une première biographie, Le comte de Chevigné (1793-1876). Auteur des Contes Rémois, paru en 2008 chez le même éditeur. Figure du paysage républicain rémois, Eugène Courmaux parcourt le XIXe siècle et ses soubresauts en combattant de la Liberté. A ce titre, il mérite de sortir de l’oubli. Né à Reims en 1817, amoureux des livres et des Belles Lettres, il est nommé à 26 ans adjoint, puis 3 ans plus tard, Conservateur en titre de la Bibliothèque municipale de Reims. Républicain, il s’engage dans la révolution de 1848. Il combat la dérive monarchique de la jeune république présidée par Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. Journaliste engagé d’opposition, il est révoqué de sa fonction de bibliothécaire, poursuivi, emprisonné et acquitté. De nouveau, poursuivi, il est condamné et s’enfuit en Belgique en 1851 pour éviter la prison. Il retrouve de nombreux républicains en exil, dont Victor Hugo. Représentant d’une marque de champagne à l’étranger pour gagner sa vie sous l’Empire, il parcourt l’Europe. Ses péripéties l’amènent à être le témoin de la guerre de Crimée en 1855. A la chute du Second Empire, ce défenseur de la république écrit de nombreux articles dans les journaux. Il est élu conseiller municipal, conseiller général puis député en 1881. Opposé aux opportunistes, il fait partie d’un petit groupe de gauche dont le leader est georges Clémenceau. Battu en 1885, il se consacre à l’écriture et au journalisme politique. Il décède en 1902, âgé de 85 ans.

Démocratès. Second dialogue, Sur les justes causes de la guerre
Que faire lorsqu'un peuple opprime et livre à la mort ses propres citoyens et les peuples alentour ? Dans un vocabulaire mêlant aristotélisme et références bibliques, outils du droit romain et doctrine de l'Eglise, le philosophe espagnol Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda répond en 1545 que la guerre contre un tel peuple est licite. Au coeur de son propos, la notion de barbarie est définie en excluant toute considération liée aux caractéristiques physiques des peuples, à leur position géographique, à leur développement technologique ou à leur rapport à la foi chrétienne. Tous les hommes, dit-il, ont en commun la raison, qui leur permet de se régler selon la loi naturelle. Aucun peuple n'est donc barbare par essence ; il le devient lorsque ses institutions publiques, en ne punissant pas ou en autorisant les atteintes aux lois naturelles, les rendent coutumières : tel est le cas du sacrifice humain et du cannibalisme rituel chez les Aztèques. Détruire et remplacer de telles institutions sont les conditions d'un retour à l'humanité. Et si un peuple ne peut y parvenir seul, c'est une juste cause de guerre que de lui venir en aide. Sepúlveda affirme ainsi la compétence de la raison pour condamner les institutions attentatoires à des normes universelles dont il fournit la première esquisse. Dans son introduction à ce texte majeur de la pensée politique du XVIe siècle, traduit ici pour la première fois en français, Gilles Bienvenu retrace la trajectoire rationaliste de l'humaniste de Cordoue et s'attache à restituer les enjeux des débats alors suscités par ses thèses, qui culminèrent lors de la fameuse controverse de Valladolid.

Le Sénégal sous Wade. Cahiers d'une démocratie sans démocrates
La faiblesse des démocraties modernes réside dans le fait qu'il leur faut trouver des solutions à des problèmes qui n'y ont pas toujours une place légitime. Au Sénégal celle-ci est encore embryonnaire et hybride, le mal est d'autant plus profond que les difficultés économiques rendent aléatoire, voire complètement caduque, la notion de citoyenneté. En effet, dans un univers où l'ignorance et l'indigence des masses sont le pain béni des prélats politiques dont la liturgie quotidienne porte sur la psychose d'un éclatement toujours imminent de la société, les citoyens sont tout juste des ustensiles politiques. Le paradoxe de la société sénégalaise actuelle est que l'élite, constituée des politiques, de la société civile, des marabouts et de la presse, s'emploie à snober le peuple et à l'abrutir, plutôt qu'à lui inculquer une culture démocratique qui l'affranchirait des chaines de la mal-gouvernance et de la pauvreté. Après le syncrétisme religieux, les Sénégalais sont en train de développer une espèce de syncrétisme politique : une société et des moeurs politiques à mi-chemin entre l'aristocratie, la conception monarchique du pouvoir et la démocratie. Le régime de Wade, et son opposition, en promiscuité avec une presse souvent harponnée dans des astuces délicates, perpétuent curieusement des pratiques archaïques et aristocratiques. La démocratie sénégalaise est orpheline de vrais démocrates : il n'est donc pas étonnant qu'elle soit turbulente et vacillante malgré l'éveil de la citoyenneté qu'a suscité l'avènement de Wade.

Pedagogic Design and Literary Form in the Work of Adalbert Stifter
This investigation brings to light the fundamental significance of literary form as the chief mediator of Stifter's pedagogic endeavour, an aspect so far neglected in Stifter literature. It opposes the widely held view that Stifter's pedagogic incentive is a result of the Austrian revolution of 1848. While Stifter's pedagogic thought stems primarily from his Kremsmünster education in the spirit of Josephinism, it is his increasingly sensitive and respectful involvement of the reader's perceptive powers in conveying the import which, far beyond the expression of pedagogic design in terms of moral and social maxims, reveals Stifter's originality as a pedagogic writer.

The Medieval Body
This fascinating and richly illustrated book accompanies The Medieval Body, the
third in a series of vanguard exhibitions that places medieval masterpieces within
a contemporary context.
The title of the exhibition refers to both a literal thread of figuration that runs
throughout the works in the presentation, as well as the complex and often shifting
symbolism of the human body in the medieval period. For thinkers and artists of
that time, the human body served as a rich source of religious and philosophical
significance, one that was in a constant state of flux between idealism and
disfigurement. While the early Middle Ages reserved representations of suffering
bodies to the margins of their world, the later Middle Ages displayed wounded
bodies in the most central spaces of public life. The crucified body of Christ and the
wounded bodies of saints assumed important positions as they were displayed on
altars, in processions, and on the exteriors of churches.
The Medieval Body tells a unique story about the human form as both a physical
entity and a recognizable metaphor. Presenting works spanning the course of a
thousand years, this exhibition offers insight into the body as an essential imagemaking

The study attempts to give the influence of theological and canonical enrichments in the meaning and understanding of the matrimonial sacrament upon the legal provisions, guidelines and programs for marriage preparation in the Igbo dioceses of Nigeria.

The Weierstrass-Stone Theorem is one of the main tools of modern analysis, and several parts of functional analysis would not exist without it. The purpose of this monograph is to present its true nature by proving several increasing generalizations of this theorem, going from the classical case of subalgebras to submodules and to arbitrary subsets of continuous functions over compact spaces. Some closely connected results on uniform approximation which are important for many applications are also presented, namely the Choquet-Deny and the Kakutani Theorems for semi-lattices and for lattices of continuous functions, respectively. The beautiful variation of the Weierstrass-Stone Theorem due to von Neumann is also included with the proof due to R. I. Jewett. The monograph ends with several recent results on uniform approximation of bounded continuous functions over non-compact spaces.

Bernard Landra, musicien franco-américain habitant Los Angeles, vient en vacances en France pour se reposer après une grosse tournée musicale. Il rend visite à ses parents et décide d'aller se reposer dans l'appartement familial de vacances à soixante kilomètres de Nice, loin du bruit. Après s'être recueilli sur la tombe de ses grands-parents il est attiré par une épitaphe inscrite en anglais sur une stèle. Une jeune femme qui aurait à peu près son âge avait perdu la vie et sur sa tombe était écrit : To My Lovely Wife Curieux de savoir qui était cette femme, il décide, auprès de certaines personnes du village, de connaître un peu plus sa vie et va découvrir une histoire policière très particulière.
