Un nouvel an de pierres
Dov Shatz est un célèbre écrivain israélien, qui suscite dans son pays et en Occident des sentiments souvent violents, à cause de ses prises de position provocatrices : il n'hésite pas à s'afficher avec des antisionistes extrémistes pour condamner la politique du gouvernement israélien. Pourtant, il n'éprouve aucune passion pour la cause palestinienne, il méprise et honnit le terrorisme arabe. Il y a dans ses provocations une part de calcul mercantile et de jubilation narcissique, mais aussi du courage et de la sincérité. Sa dernière sortie médiatique lui vaut les foudres presque unanimes de ses concitoyens, et même de son ex-femme, Levana, qui l'a pourtant toujours soutenu. Dov Shatz est très seul, ses ennemis sont nombreux et l'obtention du Nobel n'allégera pas son sort. C'est en renouant avec sa fille Leah, ultra-religieuse à l'opposé de ses propres convictions, qu'il finira par se réconcilier quelque peu avec Israël et avec lui-même. Un nouvel an de pierres est une réflexion très riche sur ce que signifie être juif aujourd'hui, et sur les diverses positions et oppositions que suscite en Occident le conflit israélo-palestinien. C'est aussi une critique rageuse des hypocrisies contemporaines.

"Depuis 2008, j'habite la ville de mes rêves. Un an à Kyôto réunit une sélection de photos prises pendant ma première année au Japon. Des photos de novice ébloui par la beauté qui l'entoure et qui rêve de partager sa chance avec tous. Mes photographies ne cherchent pas à dupliquer le réel mais à capturer, intensifier l'émotion. L'étape la plus importante de mon travail n'est donc pas la prise de vue mais le développement. Une étape profondément marquée par mon apprentissage des idéogrammes : on perçoit le monde différemment quand on lit et trace en kanji. IDENTITE ET DIFFERENCE : AN ESSAY CONCERNING HUMAN UNDERSTANDING II, XXVII, OF IDENTITY AND DIVERSITY. L'invention de la conscience
Inséré en 1694 dans le grand ouvrage de Locke, fondateur de la théorie moderne de la connaissance, le " traité de l'identité " a laissé une trace remarquable du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours. C'est lui qui engage l'empirisme et la philosophie analystique anglo-saxonne dans un débat sans cesse relancé sur les " critères de l'identité ".
Mais son importance vient surtout de ce que, pour la première fois, il donne un nom aux grandes catégories de la métaphysique du sujet : the consciousness, the self, et les associe étroitement dans une problématique de la " conscience de soi ". Pour que celle-ci déploie ses possibilités et ses conflits latents, il faut cependant un moment spécifique de traduction : la proposition par le huguenot français Pierre Coste, traducteur de Locke, des équivalents " la conscience " et " le soi ", fournissant à toute la philosophie continentale les moyens de sortir des apories du cartésianisme.
C'est l'ensemble de cet événement dont nous sommes encore tributaires, l'invention européenne de la conscience, qui se trouve étudié à travers la réédition des textes de Locke et Coste, l'essai d'une nouvelle traduction, le commentaire historique et philisophique.

Health Research in Developing Countries
The health of the people in the developing world is a major concern of Tropical Medical Societies of the temperate zones. Tropical medicine as an applied science has been dealing mainly with "tropical diseases." But health and diseases have many dimensions, some of which so far have not found sufficient attention of the scientific world, e.g. planning of adequate health care, medical-anthropological and socio-cultural factors operating between a health care system and the populations to be served, or the very basic problem of nutrition and its interaction with health and development. Therefore, it was felt that European tropical societies should once join forces and organize a meeting for the discussion of particularly those issues. The topics were : Health care utilization, coverage and cost of primary care, medical pluralism and concepts of diseases in traditional societies, which all are linked at the level of the provider of primary care and his clientel. Concepts of nutrition particularly during child bearing are the root of many health problems and interact with certain diarroeal and other infectious diseases.

Child and Nation. A Study of Political Socialisation and Banal Nationalism in France and England
Where do feelings of national belonging come from ? Why is it that this belonging often seems both fundamental and banal, both intangible and omnipresent ? This book argues that the answers to these questions lie in childhood and the socialisation to the nation that we experience as children. It suggests that the banality of our own everyday nationalism is due to the fact that we have spent our lives learning to take it for granted. Just as our first understandings of reality are learned during childhood socialisation, so nationhood and national belonging are internalised as natural and necessary from the very beginning of our lives. The specific nature of this early socialisation is what confers upon banal nationalism its characteristic combination of omnipresence, inscrutability and self-evidence. To try and get around this self-evidence and explore this socialisation and its results, this study has adopted an innovative methodology involving semi-directive projective interviews with young children in France and England. This book presents an analysis of how this early socialisation to the nation plays out on young children's visions of national belonging and its justifications and implications. It also looks at what this transmission in childhood means for nationalism as an ideology and the power and pertinence of the nation today.

Gerbert d'Aurillac, premier pape français que l'on redécouvre gräce aux travaux d'Ahmed Youssef, fut un "apporteur" de Lumière nouvelle, que ce soit en astronomie ou en mathématiques, au fond des ténèbres du Moyen Age. Ce concentré de Léonard de Vinci et de Jules Verne avant terme fut également un fin politique, faiseur d'empereurs germaniques et de dynasties françaises. La légende satanique de ce pape de Lumière est née du hasard qui l'a mis en relation avec des savants arabes andalous. C'est ainsi que cet introducteur des chiffres arabes en Occident fut accusé de magie et de nécromancie. Son nom et sa réputation périront "par le fer et par le feu" pour avoir professé trop d'admiration à l'égard des sciences arabes. Si Victor Hugo disait "Gerbert, l'âme livrée aux sombres aventures", c'est que son action jette encore un trouble, un millénaire plus tard, sur nous et sur l'épineuse question de la contribution de l'Islam à la civilisation occidentale. L'auteur établit, en annexe, la première liste exhaustive des livres grecs et indiens traduits par les musulmans et les juifs avant d'être transmise en latin dans une fabuleuse valse de traductions. Il démontre en outre les contours de l'héritage gerbertien dans la politique et la culture occidentales, de l'empereur Frédéric II de Hohenstaufen à Napoléon III. Mille ans de malentendus dont il nous livre les principales clés.

The Second Story of Creation (Gen 2:4-3:24)
The two creation stories in Genesis 1-3 have been subject of intense study since the beginning of critical research on the Pentateuch in the eighteenth century. Even today, they continue to vex the biblical commentators. This work attempts to study one of these creation stories, namely the Eden Story narrated in Gen 2 : 4-3 : 24. This story graphically describes the first couple's installation in the Garden of Eden and their expulsion from it. These two themes have prompted some scholars to consider this story as a summary of Israel's history until the tragedy of exile and a prologue to the literary composition commonly called Enneateuch (Genesis - 2 Kings). Such a hypothesis is based on the premise that both Eden story and Israel's history have the same end : expulsion. The reason for such an end in both is disobedience. The study takes up this hypothesis and examines its viability. Furthermore, this work attempts to bring out the biblical message of this story. Gen 2-3 is an expression of Israel's faith resulting from its history with Yahweh and from its encounter with the surrounding cultures, and it intends to articulate a religious and anthropological identity for Israel.

Une exposition de Georges Troubat est toujours une expérience singulière : comme un musicien avec un ensemble limité de notes, l'artiste multiplie les variations, les improvisions, offrant l'étonnante impression d'un ruissellement permanent. Cet homme a toujours été très actif dans sa vie ; rien n'est définitif, le courant nous emporte et il nous faut nager avec lui. L'acte créatif n'existe que répété puisqu'il est lié à la marche, aux mouvements du temps, aux passages des saisons, aux rythmes du monde. La peinture de Georges Troubat est vivante, au sens plein : elle régie son pas sur les impulsions du vivant. Son animation procède de la vie elle-même, à laquelle elle retourne comme un acquiescement permanent. Cet homme que l'on croit pressé est un nageur ébloui, et sa peinture témoigne pour un monde qui ne serait qu'éblouissement. The game that is started over and over, is then infinite. Assemblages, collections, juxtapositions. Blus, reds, yellows. Lines, textures, shapes. An exhibition of Georges Troubat is always a peculiar experience : just like a musician with a few limited notes, the artist multiplies the variations, improvisations, offering the astonishing feeling of an on-going flow. This man was always very active in his life, but nothing lasts forever, the flow takes us with it and we have to swim with it. The creative act only exists by repetition as it's tied to the pace, to the mouvements of time, to the passing seasons, to the world's rhythms. George Troubat's painting is alive, taking on the whole meaning of the word : it regulates its pace on the impulsion of the living. Its animation begins from life itself, to whom it goes back to, like a perpetual approbation. This man, who we think in a hurry, is a dazzling swimmer and his painting attests for a world which would only be dazzling.

Educational Alternatives and the Determination of Earnings in Brazilian Industry
The major objective of the study reported in this book was to determine the effects of alternative forms of education on the earnings distribution of factory workers employed in an industrializing area. The data were collected from life-history interviews conducted in northeastern Brazil and were analyzed using a variety of statistical approaches, including path-analytic techniques. The findings provide a basis for better understanding education/labor market relationships and for using education (both in-school and extra-school) as an effective instrument for individual and societal development.

Shakespeare, Hogarth and Garrick. Plays, Painting and Performance
In London in 1770 Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799) remarked, 'What a work could be written on Shakespeare, Hogarth and Garrick ! There is something similar in the genius of all three. ' Two-and-a-half centuries on, Robin Simon's highly original and illuminating book takes up the challenge. William Hogarth (1697-1764) and David Garrick (1717-1779) closely associated themselves with Shakespeare, embodying a relationship between plays, painting and performance that had been understood since Antiquity and which shaped the rules for history painting drawn up by the Académie royale in Paris in the seventeenth century. History painting was considered the highest form of art : a picture illustrating a moment drawn from just a few lines in a revered text. Hogarth's David Garrick as Richard III (1745) transformed those ideas because, although it looked like a history painting, it was also a portrait of an actor in performance. With it, Hogarth established the genre of theatrical portraiture, a new and distinctively British kind of history painting. This book offers a fresh examination of theatrical portraits through close analysis of the pictures and of the texts used in performance. It also examines the central role of the theatre in British culture, while highlighting the significance of Shakespeare, Hogarth and Garrick in the European Enlightenment and the rise of Romanticism. In this context another trio of genius features prominently : Lichtenberg, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Denis Diderot. Familiar paintings and performances are seen in an entirely new light, while unfamiliar pictures are also introduced, including major paintings and drawings that have never been published. The final chapter shows that the inter-relationship between plays, painting and performance survived into the age of cinema, revealing the pictorial sources of Laurence Olivier's legendary film Richard III.

Transcultural Dictionary of Misunderstandings. European and Chinese Horizons
The Transcultural Dictionary of Misunderstandings. European and Chinese Horizons is the result of an initiative which forges a radically new path for promoting transcultural understanding by studying culture-bound keywords. The stimulating idea is to create and address with intention that which is generally held to be by all means avoided : namely, misunderstandings. The experiment starts with a level of communication that is not political per se but cultural. Cultures have no rigid borders like nation-states. They are more dynamic and meandering, open to influence, and translatable. Like cultures themselves, keywords are saturated with history, long-term experience, values, and collective emotions. They carry a load of tacit knowledge and implicit axioms that have the advantage of not having to be unpacked, explained, or spelled out. Working through various semantic layers of keywords on both sides helps to create a more transparent language for transcultural dialogue. The creation of such a language is the effect of producing, exchanging, and working through misunderstandings on both sides. Within the framework of transcultural dialogue, misunderstandings turn out to be an innovative tool for mutual learning by seeing oneself through the eyes of the other. It is high time for researchers in various parts of the world to join forces and translate basic concepts from one language and culture into another. Every translation is a transformation, marking similarities and differences which can lead to an uncovering of new ideas, values, and cultural practices. This unconventional dialogue is a great source of inspiration because it works through hardened assumptions and misrepresentations, unsettles schematic thinking, and leads to unexpected insights and new points of contact. Le grand drame d'inversion de corps se déroulant dans un palais chinois ! Lorsque Reirin apprend que la dame de compagnie du clan Kin a fait chanter Riri, elle décide de la prendre à son propre jeu. Mais quand elle envoie Riri lui rendre l'épingle à cheveux qu'elle a reçue, celle-ci ne se présente pas à l'heure convenue. Reirin décide donc d'interroger directement sa maîtresse, Seika Kin, lors de la cérémonie de la fête des fantômes, où les apprenties doivent toutes danser devant Sa Majesté.
