Labyrinthe. Poèmes
Une partie des poèmes de ce recueil révèlent les traumatismes de l'après-guerre, la connaissance des atrocités perpétrées dans les camps de la mort. Ces infâmes pratiques ont été affreusement répétées le 7?octobre 2023. On retrouve aussi dans ces textes l'admiration, l'amour de la nature, elle qui tant nous enchante, et sa progressive dégradation, la douce empathie des uns pour les autres qui trouve son paroxysme dans l'amour, le ravissement que nous offre la musique, l'aide à vivre -presque inespérée- que nous procurent tous les arts et toutes les merveilleuses cultures disséminées par le monde. Enfin, se traduit la réalité d'une pente descendante catastrophique de la France du Général de Gaulle où on passait graduellement d'une immigration mesurée, facilement assimilée du fait d'une culture similaire à la nôtre, à une immigration massive provenant d'un autre continent, de pays aux traditions et aux religions foncièrement différentes, voire incompatibles. Voilà où le bât blesse et d'où provient le terrorisme ambiant, en partie attisé par des puissances étrangères. Dirigeants français, européens, aveuglés pour quelles raisons ? Voulant à tous prix ignorer le danger d'introduire tant de potentiels loups dans la petite bergerie européenne, sourds aux mises en garde de leurs populations autochtones non respectées, malmenées, éventuellement assassinées, ils se bouchèrent hermétiquement les oreilles et malheur aux Cassandre(s) vilipendées ou poursuivies en justice ! Ah quelle justice ! Cahin-caha et Caïn toujours là à l'affût de dirigeants occidentaux si facilement dupés, nous continuons notre chemin, extrêmement miné, tout en ayant peur qu'il débouche sur une effroyable guerre civile. L'éviterons-nous ? On en est là...

From September 2011 to December 2013 the Luigi Sturzo Institute in Rome along with the Centre of European Studies planned a series of international scientific meetings to study one highly important political subject : the commitment of Christian Democrats on an international level. This project has been organised thanks to the support of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, and the International Labour Organisation. Internationalism is a Key Element for the Christian Democrat Identity. In fact, CD is a political movement of thought and action whose roots lie in a specific ideology : to use the German word Weltanschauung, it is based on a particular framework of ideas and beliefs that leads the party to interpret the relationship between men and nations from an international point of view, ensuring the human being a central place in every social policy. The Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, wrote in a Message to these Meetings : "We can consider ourselves very lucky that 50 years ago forward-thinking personalities founded the World Union of Christian Democrats. From then on, the world, through globalisation, has been deeply changed. Events that take place in other continents immediately impact on our lives. We will be able to protect ourselves from terrorism, achieve economic and social security, and defend our environment only through common global action. This is the task of our generation : to overcome these global challenges. [...] Our parties and our political organisations share a common Christian ideal of man. This ideal, grounded on the inalienability of human dignity, is at the core of one important value : to this man has linked a social and economic model that combines economic success and social responsibility." Her message clearly shows the need to use historical knowledge, to return to and explore a rich and challenging past as well as to develop a reflection on and a course of action for the present and the future.

From scribble to cartoon. Drawings from Bruegel to Rubens
In this exhibition, the Museum Plantin-Moretus shows the 80 most beautiful old master drawings from Flemish collections. From scribble to cartoon : Drawings from Bruegel to Rubens in Flemish Collections (Van Crabbelinge tot Carton : Tekeningen van Bruegel tot Rubens in Vlaamse Collecties) gives an astonishing and representative overview of the art of drawing in our regions in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 2020, the Flemish government placed a large number of old master drawings on their masterpiece list, including rare artworks by Frans Floris, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony Van Dyck, Jacques Jordaens, Otto van Veen, Jan Fijt and many more. The majority of these masterpieces are kept in the Museum Plantin-Moretus. The museum takes the official recognition of these drawings as masterpieces as an opportunity to put its unique collection in the spotlight. The exhibition presents an overview that illustrates who, why and how people drew in our regions in the 16th and 17th centuries

The nature of security in the contemporary world is changing rapidly. Superpower detente, the progress and further prospects of arms control, the collapse of East European communist regimes, and German unification, to name but the most spectacular features, present unprecedented challenges not only for political decision-makers, but also for the mass publics in democratic societies. What are the trends of public opinion on these issues and how do they reflect these changes ? By what factors are pertinent public attitudes shaped and what structures do emerge ? At the time, FromSoftware was also beginning to build Dark Souls II, its cash cow. Miyazaki kept his distance from this sequel, which was handed off to Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura, with support from the FromSoftware president and creator of King's Field, Naotoshi Zin, who supervised the game system. On his end, Hidetaka Miyazaki formed a trusted team of regular collaborators, such as lead programmer Jun Itô (who had already filled this role for Demon's Souls and Dark Souls), composer and lead sound designer Tsukasa Saitô (Armored Core games), and most of his regular artists: Daisuke Satake, Masanori Waragai and Hiroshi Nakamura. The success of Demon's Souls, and the even greater success of Dark Souls, allowed FromSoftware to grow its ranks significantly. In total, no fewer than fifty programmers participated in the project, along with around twenty game system designers and fifty people working on visual creation (animation, scenery, characters, etc.). The Gregory Gift
Presenting for the first time the Alexis Gregory Gift to The Frick Collection, this exquisite publication provides illuminating insights into Gregory's magnificently eclectic collection, cataloging his fine and decorative works of art in detail. Twenty-eight works of art bequeathed to the Frick by Alexis Gregory range from Limoges enamels to Saint-Porchaire ware to pastels by the Venetian painter Rosalba Carriera. This remarkable gift has introduced new types of objects to the Frick : works in ivory and rhinoceros horn are the first of their kind to be held in the collection. Gregory's gift includes fifteen Limoges enamels, one of them produced in the workshop of Suzanne de Court, the only woman known to have led an enamel workshop in Limoges. Also part of the gift are a gilt-bronze sculpture, an ivory hilt, a pomander, ewers, saltcellars, and two clocks. Many of Gregory's objects came from such prestigious owners as the French royal collections and the Rothschilds. Included in the publication are commentaries on each gift. This lavishly illustrated publication accompanies an exhibition that will be on view at The Frick Collection February 16 through May 14, 2023.

Epris de polémique littéraire, il écrit pour La Table Ronde, ce qui ne l'empêche pas de donner aussi des articles à différents journaux, d'assurer pendant un temps, pour l'un d'eux, la critique dramatique, et pour un autre le courrier du coeur. Il paraît presque inutile d'ajouter qu'il fait également de la radio et, bien entendu, des scénarios de films, sans oublier, à l'occasion, des ouvrages historiques. Comment s'étonner que Cécil Saint-Laurent ait besoin de plusieurs pseudonymes ? Toutes ces activités ont dû lui paraître négligeables, puisqu'il s'est, un jour, avisé qu'il lui serait agréable d'avoir une revue, et c'est ainsi qu'est née La Parisienne. Cécil Saint-Laurent avoue volontiers que, du temps qu'il était lycéen, il s'intéressait tout particulièrement aux jeunes lycéennes de l'établissement voisin. Cette façon d'envisager les études n'a certes pas été inutile, car c'est peut-être à elle que l'on doit, dans Frou-Frou, un portrait de femme remarquablement réussi. Cette femme, nous la verrons sous des aspects extrêmement différents à travers une vie mouvementée qui se déroule au cours des quarante dernières années, ce qui a permis à l'auteur des incursions dans des milieux divers et qui font déjà époque. L'auteur s'est attaqué ici à un genre un peu particulier, puisqu'il s'agit non pas du roman tiré d'un film, mais de ce qu' il appelle un «roman-cinéma» duquel le film est tiré, ce qui confère à l'ouvrage une cadence rapide . Il n'y a plus de chapitres, mais des séquences. La contrainte technique oblige l'auteur du roman-cinéma à se priver des digressions qui permettent d'expliquer l'état d'âme des personnages. Comme dans un film, on voit, on entend, on assiste ; rien d'expliqué, tout est donné. La lecture en est facile à l'extrême, mais cette forme garde au récit le mystère et l'épaisseur de la vie. Frou-Frou est à la fois une très belle histoire d'amour et une fine étude de moeurs.

Biodiversity and strategy.. Subtle equilibriums
Biodiversity conservation calls for a revolutionary approach to our relationship with nature and the living world. But it also requires completely rethinking the way we develop international policies and strategies. While these instruments must deal with a highly complex reality, they are too often viewed as simple action plans. Measures and initiatives that are focused on mainly technical solutions eventually result in unfortunate setbacks when the often unpredictable and ever-changing dynamics of life come into play. The United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15) was held in 2022, and despite the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, it failed to produce a truly innovative approach to international 'strategy'. It is therefore more necessary than ever to reconsider the official diagnosis that underpins international action. Although certainly difficult, this can be done by mobilising a wide range of expertise from different scientific communities. Drawing on numerous examples and a wealth of research from the humanities, social sciences and conservation sciences, this book offers a profoundly renewed strategic diagnosis as well as levers for activating regenerative processes to benefit the living world.

Languages of Exile examines the relationship between geographic and linguistic border crossings in twentieth-century literature. Like no period before it, the last century was marked by the experience of expatriation, forcing exiled writers to confront the fact of linguistic difference. Literary writing can be read as the site where that confrontation is played out aesthetically – at the intersection between native and acquired language, between indigenous and alien, between self and other – in a complex multilingual dynamic specific to exile and migration. The essays collected here explore this dynamic from a comparative perspective, addressing the paragons of modernism as well as less frequently studied authors, from Joseph Conrad and Peter Weiss to Agota Kristof and Malika Mokeddem. The essays are international in their approach ; they deal with the junctions and gaps between English, French, German, Hungarian, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and other languages. The literary works and practices addressed include modernist poetry and prose, philosophical criticism and autobiography, DADA performance, sound art and experimental music theatre. This volume reveals both the wide range of creative strategies developed in response to the interstitial situation of exile and the crucial role of exile for a renewed understanding of twentieth-century literature.

"Letters to Immanuel Bekker" is an edition of forty-three letters written between 1817 and 1825 to the German philologist Immanuel Bekker by three friends. Most of the letters are by Henriette Herz, who had a famous salon in Berlin at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. The letters from Italy (1817-1819) discuss the life of the German colony there, especially of the German artists. The correspondence contains references to the social, cultural and political life in Berlin and in Germany during the second decade of the nineteenth century.

Stars and Stellar Evolution
The diverse forms that stars assume in the course of their lives can all be derives from the initial conditions : the mass and the original chemical composition. In this textbook the basic concepts of stellar structure and the main roads of stellar evolution are described. First, the observable parameters are presented, which are based on the radiation emerging from a stellar atmosphere. Then the bascphysics is described, such as the physics of gases, radiation transport, and nuclear processes, followed by essential aspects of modelling the structure of stars. After a chapter on star formation, the various steps in the evolution of stars are presented. This leads us to brown dwarfs, to the way of star changes into the red-giant state and numerous other stages of evolution and ultimately to the stellar ashes such as white dwarfs, supernovae and neutron stars. Stellar winds, stellar rotation and convection all influence the way a star evolves. The evolution of binary stars is included by using several canonical examples in which interactive processes lead to X-Ray binaries and supernovae of type la. Finally, the consequence of the study of stellar evolution are tied to observed mass ans luminosity functions and to the overall evolution of matter in the universe.

Frank Auerbach. The Charcoal Heads
Accompanying an exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery, London, Frank Auerbach : The Charcoal Heads presents a remarkable series of hauntingly beautiful largescale drawings by the artist. The catalogue includes a new piece of writing on one of the drawings from critically acclaimed novelist Colm Tóibín. This catalogue explores one of Frank Auerbach's most remarkable bodies of work - a series of large-scale portrait heads made in charcoal, produced during his early years as a young artist in postwar London. Auerbach (b. 1931) spent months on each drawing, working and reworking them during numerous sessions with his sitters. This prolonged and vigorous process of creation is evident in the finished drawings, which are richly textured and layered. Auerbach would sometimes even break through the paper and patch it up before carrying on. His heads thus emerge from the darkness of the charcoal with burning vitality, born of an artistic as well as a physical struggle with the medium. The process of repeated creation and destruction, of which these images bear the visible scars, speaks profoundly of their times, as people rebuilt their lives after the ruination and upending of the war. The exhibition will be the first time Auerbach's extraordinary drawings, made in the 1950s and early 1960s, have been brought together as a comprehensive group. They will be shown together with a selection of paintings he made of the same sitters ; for the artist, painting and drawing have always been deeply entwined. The accompanying catalogue - by Deputy Head of The Courtauld Gallery, Barnaby Wright, and with an essay by one of the greatest contemporary voices in the English language, Colm Tóibín - is the first publication to explore in depth this magnificent series. Tóibín spent several hours one afternoon in front of Auerbach's Self-Portrait (1958), which features on the front cover of the book, looking closely and taking notes. His essay is an account of his experience and offers new insights into the work and the nature of self-portaiture.
