Aurier, Symbolism and the Visual Arts

This is the first fully comprehensive study on the 19th-century poet and art critic, Albert Aurier (1865-1892), in the context of his age. Focusing on Aurier's pivotal role in the development of French Symbolist art and aesthetics, the book explores his contribution to contemporary and subsequent perceptions of Symbolism in art during a period which saw the rise of art criticism as a genre in its own right. Taking Aurier's writings on lesser-known artists such as Henry de Groux, Eugène Carrière and Jean-Jacques Henner, as well as those on Impressionism, and Van Gogh and Gauguin, the study shows how Aurier laid the foundation for the interpretation of Modernist art.

Fuseli and the Modern Woman. Fashion, Fantasy, Fetishism

This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition devoted to a fascinating group of drawings by the Anglo-Swiss Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), one of eighteenth-century Europe's most idiosyncratic, original and controversial artists. Best known for his notoriously provocative painting The Nightmare, Fuseli energetically cultivated a reputation for eccentricity, with vividly stylised images of supernatural creatures, muscle-bound heroes, and damsels in distress. While these convinced some viewers of the greatness of his genius, others dismissed him as a charlatan, or as completely mad. Fuseli's contemporaries might have thought him even crazier had they been aware that in private he harboured an obsessive preoccupation with the figure of the modern woman, which he pursued almost exclusively in his drawings. Where one might have expected idealised bodies with the grace and proportions of classical statues, here instead we encounter figures whose anatomies have been shaped by stiff bodices, waistbands, puffed sleeves, and pointed shoes, and whose heads are crowned by coiffures of the most bizarre and complicated sort. Often based on the artist's wife Sophia Rawlins, the women who populate Fuseli's graphic work tend to adopt brazenly aggressive attitudes, either fixing their gaze directly on the viewer or ignoring our presence altogether. Usually they appear on their own, in isolation on the page ; sometimes they are grouped together to form disturbing narratives, erotic fantasies that may be mysterious, vaguely menacing, or overtly transgressive, but where women always play a dominant role. Among the many intriguing questions raised by these works is the extent to which his wife Sophia was actively involved in fashioning her appearance for her own pleasure, as well as for the benefit of her husband. By bringing together more than fifty of these studies (roughly a third of the known total), The Courtauld Gallery will give audiences an unprecedented opportunity to see one of the finest Romantic-period draughtsmen at his most innovative and exciting. Visitors to the show and readers of the lavishly illustrated catalogue will further be invited to consider how Fuseli's drawings of women, as products of the turbulent aftermath of the American and French Revolutions, speak to concerns about gender and sexuality that have never been more relevant than they are today. The exhibition showcases drawings brought together from international collections, including the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand, and from other European and North American institutions.

Salvatore COSTANZA, "Les oreilles ont dû vous tinter" : the literary fortune of a folkloric theme, from Lucien to Proust, RLC LXXXIX (in French), no. 3, julysept. 2015, p. 257-268. We examine the survival of a folklore theme centered around the observation of buzzing in one's ears. Ringing was considered as a fateful movement and was comprised among the observations for divinatory ends. The relationship between the buzzing in one's ears and the belief that one subsequently became the object of other people's speech appears in Lucian of Samosata (second century A. D.) and in his later revival given by sixth century's epistolographer Aristaenetus. In this respect, a striking parallel is provided in modern French literature by Proust's Recherche. In every case a woman acting as mediator "reveals" someone that his beloved is always true to him and she was endless speaking of him. Consequently, something should have buzzed in his ears. It is interesting to remark, that such an argument drawn from superstition about buzzing in one's ears, that is, otomancy, still recurs in M. Proust with respect to abused lover's troubles. It is clearly the same plot, as his Greek antecedents have already used. Caroline BELOT GONDAUD, The Figure of the Machiavellian Couple, RLC LXXXIX (in French), no. 3, july-sept. 2015, p. 269-280. The figure of the machiavellian couple appears in Macbeth and Les Liaisons dangereuses, Les Diaboliques, The Portrait of A Lady as well as in various detective novels. The way it is told and staged creates a dramaturgy of evil. The Machiavellian couple can be interpreted as a mere figure of love and evil which rewrites, in its Shakespearean version, the biblical narrative of the Fall while the couple of Laclos signals the deep deterioration of the ideal of love in a courtly meaning. Mario ZANUCCHI, The crisis of Symbolism. The reception of Baudelaire and Verlaine in the poetry of Walter Wenghöfer, RLC LXXXIX (in French), no. 3, julysept. 2015, p. 281-298. The aim of this article is to study the reception of Charles Baudelaire and Paul Verlaine in the work of a poet from Stefan George's circle, who has been ignored by the German literary historiography until now : Walter Wenghöfer. The reception study is supported and clarified by the intertextual and intermedial analysis of exemplary poems. In this way, the contribution reconstructs the crisis of symbolist poetics in the German poetry of the < fin du siècle >. Furthermore it shows how through the aesthetic depotentialization of symbolist authorities Wenghofer anticipates expressionist criticism of the symbolist poetics. Christine QUEFFELLEC, "Life rarely imitates Art" : Gemma Bovery between Flaubert and Wilde, RLC LXXXIX (in French), no. 3, july-sept. 2015, p. 299-308. Gemma Bovery, Posy Simonds's graphic novel, is a parody of Flaubert's Madame Bovary, transposed into the end of the 20th century. The narrator, seduced by Emma Bovary, whose romantic aspirations he shares, imagines that his neighbours, Charlie and Gemma Bovery, will experience the same fate as Flaubert's characters and that life will imitate art, in accordance with Oscar Wilde's hopes. He will realize that he was wrong. This novel induces us to reflect on reading and the relationship between literature and life. The film adaptation by Anne Fontaine distorts somewhat the book's meaning, giving a unity of style and tone that the English writer had wanted to break down in order to draw closer to Flaubert's novel.

The old-fashioned harvest festivals, which take place in August, give us a chance to rediscover the history of our countryside, that of our grandparents in the 40s, 50s and 60s. It was a time of intense life on the farms, when many hands were needed to harvest a plot of land with the tools of those years, and the farmers helped each other in the heat of the summer, so as to finish before the rains returned.

Le constitutionnalisme environnemental. Quel impact sur les ordres juridiques ? Edition bilingue français-anglais

Environmental constitutionalism is founded on ideological doctrines, such as liberalism and environmentalism. It aims to enhance comparative law methods leading to the establishment of general principles that protect the environment within the constitution. This is the first book that presents the topic to European readers working in the field of environmental protection — including members of civil society organizations, policymakers, national and international officers, law students, and legal and non-legal scholars. The book begins with detailed studies of France, Germany, Switzerland, India and Brazil. Thereafter, it highlights the impact of the French Environmental Charter on administrative law, corporate law, and compensation methods for environmental harm. Finally, the book takes an unprecedented look at EU law, whose legal standards are discussed in light of environmental constitutionalism. The various contributions are written either in French or in English, as befits the comparative nature of the subject matter.

Fantastic Beasts in Antiquity. Looking for the monster, discovering the Human, Textes en français et anglais

Not satisfied with what nature offered, human beings wanted to go beyond reality and invented mysterious and intriguing creatures populating their world. During Antiquity, every culture had its own strange creatures, that mixed the forms of one or more animal, plant and human species in an infinite number of more-or-less fanciful combinations. Griffins, sphinxes, mermaids, centaurs, satyrs, pygmies, werewolves, winged monsters and unspeakable hybrids, fantastic beasts abound in the imagination of many populations throughout Antiquity. Most of them continue to live, sometimes transformed, through fairy tales, literature, movies and videogames. Faced with the abundance and variety of the ancient fantastic bestiary, the questions that come to mind are : Where do fantastic beasts come from ? How do they appear in different cultures ? What is their history, how did they survive until now ? And above all, what are fantastic beasts ? This book will explore these questions through the lens of archaeology, art history, philology and philosophy. The result is a hybrid book, precisely like the fantastic animals that constitute its object, a book which offers different approaches of analysis while being aware that our means are often vain to capture these elusive figures, which ultimately are more like us than they seem. Man, like Oedipus, will often prove to be more monstrous than the Sphinx...

Les inventeurs. Essai

What do Christopher Columbus, Reneke, Zénobe Gramme and Louis Pasteur have in common ? They were all inventors. Well fine, but who invented the crab's claw, the suction cups and the flight of squids or the proboscis of blood sucking insects ? Is invention intellectual fantasy, an industrial tool or a fundamental biological reaction ? How is this riddle to be solved ? Should we go through the list of inventions or inventors ? Is it a question of circumstances or motivations ? Who is in charge ? The Material or the Spirit ? In order to try to find a way of answering these questions, first a few very different inventors and their inventions will be presented. A few paradoxes emerge from this first part. Then we will devote an entire chapter to an exceptional inventor whose extraordinary work revolutionized how we now approach this topic. Finally, what can be said about all the inventions like the wings of birds or butterflies, the eyes of fish or insects, the leaves of trees or the social organization of beehives ? In these cases, man is not the inventor. There are countless marvels like these in the world around us. Can we explain them ? This will be the subject of the third part of this essay.

The McCarthy collection. Sculpture

This substantial catalogue explores a remarkable collection of medieval European sculpture. Richly detailed with plentiful illustrations and original research, it is a notable contribution to medieval scholarship. The McCarthy collection comprises more than 150 specimens of medieval European sculpture, produced over a period of nearly 600 years. A testimony to the comprehensiveness of Robert McCarthy's interest in the art and culture of the Middle Ages, its geographical, chronological and typological breadth place it among the most important of its kind in private hands. Including a few early examples from Merovingian France, Anglo-Saxon England and Visigothic Spain, its holdings have a strong focus on Romanesque art, with over fifty capitals and other architectural carvings from Iberia, France and the Italian Peninsula. Some of these pieces are associable with such notable workshops as those of Gislebertus, the Master of Agüero and Compostela's Master Mateo, while a great number can be closely compared to anonymous works in major and provincial sites. Notable monuments like the monastic powerhouse of Cluny or the abbatial churches of Autun and Savigny are represented through important sculptural fragments - most published here for the first time. The transition to the Gothic style and the period of its splendour, particularly in France, are witnessed by an ample selection of statuary and architectural fragments - some traceable to such important buildings as Noyon cathedral and Paris' Notre Dame, and others, more loosely, to the artistic circles that gravitated around the great projects of the age. Freestanding sculpture in stone or wood, including a small but precious nucleus of Virgin and Child statuary and some Spanish polychrome figures, constitutes an interesting subset of the collection's late medieval holdings, as do some especially fine examples of Italian trecento sculpture. Enriched with outstanding photography by Barney Hindle and Mark French, entries aim to provide detailed stylistic, iconographic and contextual analyses, with special attention paid to comparanda in public and other private collections. This approach, complemented in some cases by petrographic analysis, has allowed the. authors to connect much of the material presented in these pages with specific buildings, workshops or regional schools, contributing to a better understanding of the pieces themselves, their original settings and their cultural and artistic milieux. This catalogue follows the publication of three volumes dedicated to Robert McCarthy's vast collection of Western miniatures and manuscript leaves (2018-2021), and is part of an ambitious project to document the entirety of his holdings - which also include notable selections of medieval ivories, stained glass and East Christian Art.

The French demographic situation - population changes publication is one of thé principal information sources on the movements of the French population. This document, produced annually by Insee (the French National Institute of Economic and Statistical Information), lists the définitive results of the civil status system, as well as population estimates and numerous demographic rates. It provides a very precise assessment of the current situation, as well as population changes, births, recognitions of children, marriages, divorces and deaths in France. It also includes information on legally induced abortions, the PA CS, migratory movements and the situation in other European countries. This edition is based on the detailed results of 2001, and includes provisional estimations for 2002. There is a great deal of information listed over 50 years or more. The French demographic situation has been translated for English speakers most charts and texts of the CD-ROM are available in English.

The Concept of Man in Igbo Myths

In the vast silence of their isolation, the traditional Igbos have learnt the ways of living in harmony with nature. From their origin in distant time, they have kept a sacred perspective on the natural world. In our age, there is the need for traditional wisdoms to retain their validity and be intrinsic to our philosophic and scientific perceptions of the cosmos. We cannot do without their knowledge, their spiritual perspective, and their deep faith in the harmony of all nature. Ignoring these qualities has profound environmental implications. Global warming, environmental pollution, and the exhaustion of nature's resources are but a few of the symptoms of the nature's experiences as we continue to mistreat it in order to satisfy our own ends. This work helps us to realise that wherever we are, we are a part of nature. All the things around us are as presences, representing forces and powers of life that are not ours and yet are all part of us. Then we find them reflecting in ourselves, because we are nature, though not identical with it.

Advanced Course in Yogi Philosophy and Oriental Occultism

The twelve lessons forming this volume were originally issued in the shape of monthly lessons, known as "The Advanced Course in Yogi Philosophy and Oriental Occultism" during a period of twelve months beginning with October 1904, and ending September 1905. We have been told, so often, that we must take certain things "on faith, " and that it was "no use bothering our minds concerning them, " but this is only a partial statement of truth, for the Intellect does give us a reliable report concerning the real nature of things. . ". New Thought proponents at the turn of the twentieth century sought to use mysticism to unleash the forces of the universe in themselves. One of the most influential thinkers of this early "New Age" philosophy promises here, in this 1904 book, to show the reader "to see with the clear vision of the Spirit" and how to "achieve the peace of the awakened and conscious soul". As the yogi reminds us, "No occult teaching is ever wasted-all bears fruit in its own good time". With this significant document of the New Thought movement back in print, now may be the time. Content : Lesson I. Light On The Path Lesson II. Some More Light On The Path Lesson III. Spiritual Consciousness Lesson IV. The Voice Of Silence Lesson V. Karma Yoga Lesson VI. Gnani Yoga Lesson VII. Bhakti Yoga Lesson VIII. Dharma Lesson IX. More About Dharma Lesson X. Riddle Of The Universe Lesson XI. Matter And Force Lesson XII. Mind And Spirit American writer WILLIAM WALKER ATKINSON (1862-1932)-aka Yogi Ramacharaka-was born in Baltimore and had built up a successful law practice in Pennsylvania before professional burnout led him to the religious New Thought movement. He served as editor of the popular magazine New Thought from 1901 to 1905, and as editor of the journal Advanced Thought from 1916 to 1919. He authored dozens of New Thought books-including The Philosophies and Religions of India, Arcane Formula or Mental Alchemy and Vril, or Vital Magnetism-under numerous pseudonyms, some of which are likely still unknown today.

The Undergrowth of Science. Delusion, self-deception and human frailty

Walter Gratzer's themes in the stories he relates in The Undergrowth of Science are collective delusion and human folly. Science is generally seen as a process bound by rigorous rules, which its practitioners must not transgress. Deliberate fraud occasionally intrudes, but it is soon detected, the perpetrators cast out and the course of discovery barely disturbed. Far more interesting are the outbreaks of self-delusion that from time to time afflict upright and competent researchers, and then spread like an epidemic or mass-hysteria through a sober and respectable scientific community. When this happens the rules by which scientists normally govern their working lives are suddenly suspended. Sometimes these episodes are provoked by personal vanity, an unwillingness to acknowledge error or even contemplate the possibility that a hard-won success is a will o' the wisp; at other times they stem from loyalty to a respected and trusted guru, or even from patriotic pride; and, worst of ail, they may be a consequence of a political ideology which imposes its own interpretation on scientists' observations of the natural world. Unreason and credulity supervene, illusory phenomena are described and measured, and theories are developed to explain them - until suddenly, often for no single reason, the bubble bursts, leaving behind it a residue of acrimony, recrimination, embarrassment and ruined reputations. Here, then, are radiations, measured with high precision yet existing only in the minds of those who observed them; the Russian water, which some thought might congeal the oceans: phantom diseases which called for heroic surgery; monkey testis implants that restored the sexual powers of ageing roués and of tired sheep; truths about genetics and about the nature of matter, perceptible only to Aryan scientists in the Third Reich or Marxist ideologues in the Soviet Union; and much more. The Undergrowth of Science explores, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the history of such episodes, up to our own time, in ail their absurdity, tragedy and pathos.

L'oeuvre de David Fincher. Scruter la noirceur

We thought we had gone through the topic in the first volume, those two games opened new pists of reflexions. The in-depth analysis of Hidetaka Miyazaki's Dark Souls saga continues with this volume 2, decoding the Bloodborne and Dark Souls III episodes. An indinspensale ebook for all the fans of the game Dark Souls !EXTRACT"The project, christened Project Beast, began soon after the Astorias of the Abyss DLC was released in August 2012. At the time, FromSoftware was also beginning to build Dark Souls II, its cash cow. Miyazaki kept his distance from this sequel, which was handed off to Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura, with support from the FromSoftware president and creator of King's Field, Naotoshi Zin, who supervised the game system. On his end, Hidetaka Miyazaki formed a trusted team of regular collaborators, such as lead programmer Jun Itô (who had already filled this role for Demon's Souls and Dark Souls), composer and lead sound designer Tsukasa Saitô (Armored Core games), and most of his regular artists: Daisuke Satake, Masanori Waragai and Hiroshi Nakamura. The success of Demon's Souls, and the even greater success of Dark Souls, allowed FromSoftware to grow its ranks significantly. In total, no fewer than fifty programmers participated in the project, along with around twenty game system designers and fifty people working on visual creation (animation, scenery, characters, etc.). Thanks to financial support from Sony, many Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese studios were sub-contracted during the production to help with graphics and visuals."ABOUT THE AUTHORSPassionate about films and video games, Damien Mecheri joined the writers team of Gameplay RPG in 2004, writing several articles for the second special edition on the Final Fantasy saga. He continued his work with the team in another publication called Background, before continuing the online adventure in 2008 with the site Gameweb.fr. Since 2011, he has come aboard Third Éditions with Mehdi El Kanafi and Nicolas Courcier, the publisher's two founders. Damien is also the author of the book Video Game Music: a History of Gaming Music. For Third Éditions, he is actively working on the "Level Up" and "Année jeu vidéo" collections. He has also written or co-written several works from the same publisher: The Legend of Final Fantasy X, Welcome to Silent Hill: a journey into Hell, The Works of Fumito Ueda: a Different Perspective on Video Games and, of course, the first volume of Dark Souls: Beyond the Grave. Curious by nature, a dreamer against the grain and a chronic ranter, Sylvain Romieu is also a passionate traveler of the real and the unreal, the world and the virtual universes, always in search of enriching discoveries and varied cultures. A developer by trade, he took up his modest pen several years ago to study the characteristics and richness of the marvelously creative world of video games. He writes for a French video game site called Chroniques-Ludiques, particularly on the topic of RPGs, his preferred genre.

Der Nister's Work 1907-1929

This book examines the symbolist tales of Der Nister (1884-1950), a Soviet Yiddish writer who wrote before and after the Revolution in the USSR, and in Berlin in the 1920s. It offers various intertextual readings of the tales, determining the influence of the French and Russian symbolist movements and the Jewish folk and art-tale, and retracing the political and artistic background of Jewish modernism in the Soviet Union and in Berlin in the 1920s. Drawing on various literary theories, it also investigates the narrative structure of Der Nister's tales, based on the midrashic mashal-nimshal figure, as well as his sophisticated use of symbol and allegory. Finally, it examines the intrusion of the economics of modernity (the city, the masses, inflation) which leads to the disintegration of the system of allegorical symbolism, the collapse of storytelling, and Der Nister's final renunciation of symbolism.

One Artist on Five Continents

Elisabet Delbrück (1876-1967) was one of a number of Germans who came to New Zealand in the late 1930s. Unlike most, she had not intended to emigrate but was touring the country when World War II broke out. She was at first forbidden to leave and then chose to remain in Wellington. Her thirty years in Mahina Bay on Wellington harbour had a profound effect on all who knew her. This study aims to discover why she was so remarkable. It explores her early life, her marriage into a prominent German family and her qualification as an artist. She turned this into a profession, teaching and exhibiting on five continents in the 1920s and 1930s. She always travelled alone, observing the customs and beliefs of the people she met. In Australia and New Zealand in 1938 and 1939 she was wrongly suspected of spreading Nazi propaganda. Her story is also the story of a heroic group of Wellingtonians who helped her in the 1940s and valued her friendship till her death.
