Imaginary Journey through WWI. Edition français-anglais-allemand
Avec cette série, Indra Laenens nous emmène dans un "voyage imaginaire" à travers la Première Guerre mondiale. Fasciné depuis son jeune âge par la photographie de guerre, il a réalisé de nombreux collages à partir d'autoportraits inspirés des scènes populaires de Bruegel et de photographies documentaires anciennes en noir et blanc. Les photos de la Première Guerre mondiale ont amené l'artiste à travailler de manière réaliste, en s'attachant à l'émotion et au vécu, mais avec un regard personnel sur l'époque orienté par ses lectures et l'aide de spécialistes. Le principe de la duplication de "soi" permet de tester les limites du médium. L'ouvrage se veut en outre un appel fort à la paix, "no more war" ... Pour chacune d'elle il y ' a : - Le texte arabe (avec le code couleur des règles de Tajwid) et le texte français. - L'explication des versets conçue à partir de sources certifiées dont les références sont indiquées au début de l'ouvrage (principalement Tafsir Al Jalalyn, Ibn kathîr, Al-Muyassar, Al-Muntakkab). - Des rubriques complémentaires : Infos science, des Questionnements pour faire réfléchir, des encarts "Le savais-tu", "Mini-Dico", etc, en plus, un glossaire des termes arabes transcrits à la fin.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN WORLD HISTORY. An introduction
In modern industrial society, the tic between science and technology seems clear, even inevitable. But historically, as James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn remind us, the connection was far less apparent. For much of human history, technology depended more on the innovation of skilled artisans than it did on the speculation of scientists. Technology as "applied science," the authors argue, emerged relatively recently, as industry and governments began funding scientific research that would lead directly to new or improved technologies. In Science and Technology in World History, McClellan and Dorn offer an introduction to this changing relationship.
McClellan and Dorn review the historical record beginning with the thinking and tool making of prehistoric humans. Neolithic people, for example, developed metallurgy of a sort, using naturally occurring raw copper, and kept systematic records of the moon's phases. Neolithic craftsmen possessed practical knowledge of the behavior of clay, fire, and other elements of their environment, but though they may have had explanations for the phenomena of their crafts, they toiled without any systematic science of materials or the self-conscious application of theory to practice.
Without neglecting important figures of Western science such as Newton and Einstein, the authors demonstrate the great achievements of non-Western cultures. They remind us that scientific traditions took root in China, India, and Central and South America, as well as in a series of Near Eastern empires, during late antiquity and the Middle Ages, including the vast region that formed the Islamic conquest. From this comparative perspective, the authors explore the emergence of Europe as a scientific and technological power. Continuing their narrative through the Manhattan Project, NASA, and modern medical research, the authors weave the converging histories of science and technology into an integrated, perceptive, and highly readable narrative.

The Dramatic Encounter of Divine and Human Freedom in the Theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar
This book surveys the major theological writings of Hans Urs von Balthasar from the perspective of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom. The first part examines Balthasar's early treatment of the question in the context of the analogy of being. The second part concentrates on his more mature work, the Theological Dramatics, with its understanding of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom in terms of a 'dramatic encounter' in which, controversially, human freedom is thought to actively participate in an ever-greater exchange of love in God. But this book is more than a survey. Observing the persistence of the 'analogy of proportionality' within the Dramatics leads the author in the third part to a critique of Balthasar's thought. It is argued that the continuation of the earlier perspective explains Balthasar's emphasis on the freedom of the individual to the neglect of social structures and their transformation. While the 'historical' as such is not neglected, as some claim it is, the focus is on the history of the individual and his or her relationship with God. It is therefore contended that Balthasar's theology of the Trinity is more concerned with 'interpersonal' relationships than truly 'social' ones and that this is what inhibits a fruitful dialogue with social theologies.

" The selection of over 280 highlights is presented with brief commentaries and an essay that traces the growth of the Ackland Art Museum's outstanding collection. The Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of the United States' most distinguished public university art museums. Founded in 1958, it now houses over 20, 000 works of art, covering some 5, 000 years of cultures from around the globe. "Look Close, Think Far" is the tagline of the Ackland, informing everything from the dynamic and varied program of special exhibitions to ambitious interpretation, education, and outreach activities. It applies especially strongly to the museum's extensive permanent collection. Although an integral part of the oldest public university in the United States, the Ackland is a relatively young institution. Now approaching its sixty-fifth year, it has become the proud steward of over 20, 000 works of art from an impressively broad range of world cultures and time periods. The approach taken by the editor Peter Nisbet, deputy director for curatorial affairs at the Ackland, differs from most conventional volumes of museum collection highlights in several refreshing ways. Instead of separating works along the lines of curatorial departments, the arrangement emphasizes the unity of the collection by merging works from different cultures. These are presented in a largely chronological sequence, but one that surprises by starting with the present and extending back in time. Within this order, works of art are deliberately paired across individual page openings, to stimulate visual attention, reflective thinking, and sometimes maybe just a smile.

The Gregory Gift
Presenting for the first time the Alexis Gregory Gift to The Frick Collection, this exquisite publication provides illuminating insights into Gregory's magnificently eclectic collection, cataloging his fine and decorative works of art in detail. Twenty-eight works of art bequeathed to the Frick by Alexis Gregory range from Limoges enamels to Saint-Porchaire ware to pastels by the Venetian painter Rosalba Carriera. This remarkable gift has introduced new types of objects to the Frick : works in ivory and rhinoceros horn are the first of their kind to be held in the collection. Gregory's gift includes fifteen Limoges enamels, one of them produced in the workshop of Suzanne de Court, the only woman known to have led an enamel workshop in Limoges. Also part of the gift are a gilt-bronze sculpture, an ivory hilt, a pomander, ewers, saltcellars, and two clocks. Many of Gregory's objects came from such prestigious owners as the French royal collections and the Rothschilds. Included in the publication are commentaries on each gift. This lavishly illustrated publication accompanies an exhibition that will be on view at The Frick Collection February 16 through May 14, 2023.

As a member of the Berlin-Friedrichshagen writers' colony, the Swede Ola Hansson both stimulated and guided creative literary thought among the German authors of the 1890's. Hansson's role as an essayist, short story writer, and as a mediator of Scandinavian and wider European influences upon German literature of the times, particularly in its struggle with Naturalism, is documented and assessed.

Why We Are Not What We Think We Are
Questions about personal identity and about time affect us all. The concern for "our" future and the fear of "our" death are based on (mostly vague) concepts of personal identity over time. Though the atomic components of our present body are not identical with the ones shown on our childhood photos, we have no doubts in recognizing ourselves on those pictures. Similarly, we are convinced that "we" will be able to recognize "ourselves" on our present passport-photos even in the future. Is this confidence justified ? If it is not, our conception of life and death would be as faulty as was the image of the universe in the Middle Ages.

This work consists of a collection of eight papers on the syntax of English as spoken and written by educated Singaporeans. The topics dealt with include various aspects of verb-phrase structure and use, comparative constructions, and relative pronoun selection. Some of the papers are dialectological in focus and some theoretical, but all were researched through questionnaire-based interviews and/or examination of bodies of written material. Eleven Singapore researchers collaborated with the editor in this project.

Quand le rédacteur du Star apprend que Walt Sydowski, de l'escouade des Homicides, a été dépêché pour participer à cette enquête, il envoie Tom Reed afin de voir ce qui se trame là-bas, mais aussi pour rendre compte de l'exécution prochaine d'Isaiah Hood, un type qui a tué une fillette vingt ans plus tôt dans ce même parc des Glaciers. Or, ce que le journaliste est sur le point de découvrir va bientôt tenir l'Amérique entière sur le bout de sa chaise…

Thinking about Physics
Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Too often, though, he believes, physicists haven't subjected their assumptions to thorough scrutiny. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood.
"Surely physics is more than a collection of experimental results, assembled to satisfy the curiosity of appreciative experts," Newton writes. Physics, according to Newton, has moved beyond the describing and naming of curious phenomena, which is the goal of some other branches of science. Physicists have spent a great part of the twentieth century searching for explanations of experimental findings. Newton agrees that experimental facts are vital to the study of physics, but only because they lead to the development of a theory that can explain them. Facts, he argues, should undergird theory.
Newton's explanatory sweep is both broad and deep. He covers such topics as quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, field theory, thermodynamics, the role of mathematics in physics, and the concepts of probability and causality. For Newton the fundamental entity in quantum theory is the field, from which physicists can explain the particle-like and wave-like properties that are observed in experiments. He grounds his explanations in the quantum field.
Although this is not designed as a standalone textbook, it is essential reading for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and researchers. This is a clear, concise, up-to-date book about the concepts and theories that underlie the study of contemporary physics. Readers will find that they will become better-informed physicists and, therefore, better thinkers and problem solvers, too.

Elles ne parlent pas toutes de féminisme, mais toutes demandent l'égalité. Elles ne veulent plus avoir peur, subir de violences, avoir à se justifier sur leur genre ni faire leur preuve plus que les autres. Elles sont pressées. Visiblement plus que les institutions qui les gouvernent." Et si rien n'avait changé un an après #MeToo ? Pendant douze mois, Astrid de Villaines est allée à la rencontre des Françaises pour qu'elles témoignent sur les inégalités et les violences qu'elles subissent au quotidien.
