Les derniers jours du Tullianum. The last days of Tullianum
Je vis dans une pièce. A moins que ce ne soit elle qui vive en moi. Régulièrement quelqu'un vient. Raclement de ferraille, craquement d'os, gémissements rauques, autant de bruits annonçant sa venue à chaque fois. Ses passages sont brefs. Il ne reste pas. Derrière lui, j'entends la porte qui se referme. Après sept années d'une guerre sanglante contre les légions romaines, Jugurtha mourut en prison, à Rome, vers l'an 104 avant Jésus-Christ. Avec lui s'éteignit la lignée des "Aguellid amokrane", ces grands rois numides qui ont écrit en lettres d'or l'Histoire ancienne de l'Afrique du Nord. Live in a room. La rhétorique catéchétique. A New Catechism, set forth Dialogue-wise in Familiar Talk between the Father and the Son by Thomas Becon
Parmi les Réformateurs anglais, Thomas Becon (1512-1567) est connu pour son goût du dialogue, pour son talent de prédicateur, pour le don presque lyrique dont il fait preuve dans l'écriture de la prière, comme en témoignent les nombreuses prières de sa plume qui figurent dans le Primer de 1559. C'est un homme d'Église qui manifeste un amour certain pour les mots. La très grande majorité de ses œuvres ont été publiées par la Parker Society au XIXe siècle : déjà, la variété et la qualité de l'intitulé de ses traités et de ses dialogues sont l'indice, chez cet homme de son époque, du goût de la recherche dans l'expression des idées. Dans son œuvre monumentale de plusieurs centaines de pages, le New Catechism, il expose personnellement la doctrine de l'Église d'Angleterre au moyen d'un dialogue entre un père et son fils, qui offre une panoplie riche et variée de ressources didactiques et rhétoriques.

The Undergrowth of Science. Delusion, self-deception and human frailty
Walter Gratzer's themes in the stories he relates in The Undergrowth of Science are collective delusion and human folly. Science is generally seen as a process bound by rigorous rules, which its practitioners must not transgress. Deliberate fraud occasionally intrudes, but it is soon detected, the perpetrators cast out and the course of discovery barely disturbed. Far more interesting are the outbreaks of self-delusion that from time to time afflict upright and competent researchers, and then spread like an epidemic or mass-hysteria through a sober and respectable scientific community. When this happens the rules by which scientists normally govern their working lives are suddenly suspended. Sometimes these episodes are provoked by personal vanity, an unwillingness to acknowledge error or even contemplate the possibility that a hard-won success is a will o' the wisp; at other times they stem from loyalty to a respected and trusted guru, or even from patriotic pride; and, worst of ail, they may be a consequence of a political ideology which imposes its own interpretation on scientists' observations of the natural world. Unreason and credulity supervene, illusory phenomena are described and measured, and theories are developed to explain them - until suddenly, often for no single reason, the bubble bursts, leaving behind it a residue of acrimony, recrimination, embarrassment and ruined reputations.
Here, then, are radiations, measured with high precision yet existing only in the minds of those who observed them; the Russian water, which some thought might congeal the oceans: phantom diseases which called for heroic surgery; monkey testis implants that restored the sexual powers of ageing roués and of tired sheep; truths about genetics and about the nature of matter, perceptible only to Aryan scientists in the Third Reich or Marxist ideologues in the Soviet Union; and much more. The Undergrowth of Science explores, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the history of such episodes, up to our own time, in ail their absurdity, tragedy and pathos.

Arts du Nigéria Central revisités. Mumuye et peuples environnants
In previous studies, Jan Strybol pointed out that sculpture in Northern Nigeria - contrary to what is generally assumed - flourished. Wood sculptures could be found just about everywhere, with the exception of a part of the Far North. In this study, the author first examines the sculptural traditions of a number of peoples in Central Nigeria, in particular from the Jos Plateau and from the valley of the Middle Benue to the source area of the Taraba River. These peoples can be described as non-centralized communities where mainly art in perishable materials was produced by part-time specialists, in contrast to the centralized empires in the South (Ife, Benin) where full-time specialists created complex works of art in durable materials (stone, bronze, iron). Perhaps the most well-known ethnic group in the Middle Benue region among aficionados of African art are the Mumuye. Since the end of the last century, the traditional rites of the Mumuye have rapidly disappeared as a result of the advance of the world religions and with them the Mumuye sculpture so much admired in Europe and America. In addition to wood sculpture, Jan Strybol also pays attention to objects in bronze, iron, terracotta and other materials. Until now, these art forms have been very underexposed and have now almost completely disappeared. Finally, the author also elaborates on some artistic achievements of a number of little-known residual groups within the Mumuye territory, which can boast a rich art tradition.

Le jeune Obi-Wan Kenobi face au vertige existentielle de l'adolescence ! Nouvel apprenti de Qui-Gon Jinn depuis peu, Obi-Wan Kenobi ne peut s'empêcher de se demander si leur association n'est pas une erreur. Le Padawan excelle au maniement du sabre laser, mais Qui-Gon veut surtout qu'il travaille la méditation. Et tandis que d'autres Padawans accompagnent leur maître pour des missions lointaines et passionnantes, Qui-Gon et son élève restent sur Coruscant. Aussi, lorsqu'Obi-Wan découvre des indices concernant une affaire restée en suspens sur une planète mystérieuse, il convainc Qui-Gon d'aller y enquêter. Mais le matin du départ, son maître demeure introuvable. Furieux et blessé, Obi-Wan décide de partir seul pour accomplir cette mission. Arrivé sur Lenahra, il découvre que les seuls habitants de la planète sont de jeunes utilisateurs de la Force. Plus il passe de temps avec eux, loin du quotidien du Temple, plus il doit affronter sa plus grande crainte : peut-être n'a-t-il jamais été destiné à devenir un Jedi ? Pourtant il ne peut s'empêcher de sentir que quelque chose ne va pas sur Lenahra. Obi-Wan parviendra-t-il à rétablir son lien avec la Force à temps pour se sauver, ainsi que tous ceux qui l'entourent ?

The elbe cycle route
This guide describes the Elbe Cycle route which runs from the river's source in the Krkonose mountains on the Czech/Polish border to Cuxhaven, on the German North Sea coast. Possibly the easiest long-distance cycle route in Europe in terms of gradient, it visits a part of the continent that was mostly inaccessible to foreigners before the fall of Communism in 1989 and which has changed dramatically since opening up to visitors. On its gentle descent to the sea, the route passes through many small towns that were ignored during the Communist period but have now reemerged as medieval gems, as well as larger cities such as Prague, Dresden and Magdeburg which have been rebuilt and restored since the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Epilepsy: the invisible pain
They say life is a long stretch of a calm river, but not for everyone ! She was for me until the day when everything rocked, the day my destiny was changed dramatically. People do not realize how life can be so sweet and so beautiful. They complain all day long for trivialities. They are not even aware that they have before their eyes the most beautiful wealth : the luck and happiness of living in good health. I was rich before. Now I am poor because my child has an incurable disease, that has currently no hope of being healed. As a parent, how can we accept that ? , How to continue living carrying the bundle of pain in my head ? , How to overcome this feeling of helplessness ? When I started speaking to my heart, I didn't know myself that this was the beginning of a new life : a rebirth as a poet. When I learnt that my 7-year-old daughter was suffering from the Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy, this was like an earthquake in my life. Then, I needed to write in order to express my sorrow and my pain. Words and rhymes came naturally to my mind. This was obvious that poetry would be my survival weapon.

No wonder then that as soon as the Reformation started, it received and enthusiastic welcome in many of the towns and villages and soon swept most of the Southern half of France. In many of these villages, the descendants of the Cathars and the Vaudois had been living quietly and were among the first to join the new churches. However, challenging the spiritual, and in some cases the secular, power of Rome wasn't without danger ; soon the "heretics" were being persecuted, harassed and burned with their seditious books. As the French Kings (with the notable exception of Henry IV), sided with the Pope, a culture of resistance developed and has remained to this day. This book shows the clear link and shared ideas between the Huguenots who fought Louis XIVth and their descendants who hid Jewish children and fought nazi occupation forces. Richar Maltby, retired Professor of History at King's School in Canterbury and the author of a successful illustrated history of Canterbury takes us through the villages, towns and hideouts of the Huguenots and follows the Renaissance to WWII. His well-researched and well-illustrated book describes how the influence of the Bible and protestant theology permeated a whole civilization with a strong love for freedom and rejection of oppression.

Fuseli and the Modern Woman. Fashion, Fantasy, Fetishism
This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition devoted to a fascinating group of drawings by the Anglo-Swiss Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), one of eighteenth-century Europe's most idiosyncratic, original and controversial artists. Best known for his notoriously provocative painting The Nightmare, Fuseli energetically cultivated a reputation for eccentricity, with vividly stylised images of supernatural creatures, muscle-bound heroes, and damsels in distress. While these convinced some viewers of the greatness of his genius, others dismissed him as a charlatan, or as completely mad. Fuseli's contemporaries might have thought him even crazier had they been aware that in private he harboured an obsessive preoccupation with the figure of the modern woman, which he pursued almost exclusively in his drawings. Where one might have expected idealised bodies with the grace and proportions of classical statues, here instead we encounter figures whose anatomies have been shaped by stiff bodices, waistbands, puffed sleeves, and pointed shoes, and whose heads are crowned by coiffures of the most bizarre and complicated sort. Often based on the artist's wife Sophia Rawlins, the women who populate Fuseli's graphic work tend to adopt brazenly aggressive attitudes, either fixing their gaze directly on the viewer or ignoring our presence altogether. Usually they appear on their own, in isolation on the page ; sometimes they are grouped together to form disturbing narratives, erotic fantasies that may be mysterious, vaguely menacing, or overtly transgressive, but where women always play a dominant role. Among the many intriguing questions raised by these works is the extent to which his wife Sophia was actively involved in fashioning her appearance for her own pleasure, as well as for the benefit of her husband. By bringing together more than fifty of these studies (roughly a third of the known total), The Courtauld Gallery will give audiences an unprecedented opportunity to see one of the finest Romantic-period draughtsmen at his most innovative and exciting. Visitors to the show and readers of the lavishly illustrated catalogue will further be invited to consider how Fuseli's drawings of women, as products of the turbulent aftermath of the American and French Revolutions, speak to concerns about gender and sexuality that have never been more relevant than they are today. The exhibition showcases drawings brought together from international collections, including the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand, and from other European and North American institutions.
