Jeunes - ville - violence. Comprendre - prévenir - traiter
Parce que la violence est polymorphe et omniprésente (dans les familles, à l'école, dans la rue, au travail, sur les stades, etc.), parce qu'elle saccage le besoin de paix et de sécurité nécessaire au développement de la personne et de toute sociabilité, parce qu'elle met en avant fréquemment les jeunes générations qui seront les adultes de demain, parce qu'elle insiste, également sur les différends actuels de la vie sociale, la Ligue française pour la santé mentale, reconnue d'utilité publique, et l'association Enfants et Espoir, délégation régionale de celle-ci, associées à l'Institut de sciences pénales et de criminologie de l'université d'Aix-Marseille III (Aix-en-Provence), au Tribunal de grande instance de Toulon, à l'hôpital d'instruction des armées Sainte-Anne, ont organisé un colloque de deux jours sur le problème de la violence dans la cité, sa dimension quotidienne et le rôle tenu par les populations jeunes. Ce colloque, placé sous le haut patronage de Madame Claire BRISSET, Défenseure des enfants, s'est tenu les 9 et 10 octobre 2002 au casino de Hyères-les-Palmiers (83400). Vingt sommités de la médecine, de la psychologie, du droit, de l'éducation, se sont jointes à des magistrats et à des policiers pour exposer leur point de vue et essayer de comprendre, afin de mieux le prévenir, ce phénomène majeur de notre temps, véritable défi à nos institutions et à nos cultures. Le ministre des Sports et de nombreuses personnalités y étaient présents ou représentés. Dans le présent ouvrage sont envisagés les formes et les lieux de violence, les aspects juridiques de celle-ci et son traitement.

Quelques jours après le combat qui les a opposés au Grand Inquisiteur Vitalis, Amicia et Hugo apprennent qu'ils sont recherchés et prennent la direction de l'Est, loin des troupes anglaises affaiblies et d'une Inquisition revancharde. Secrètement à leurs trousses, des Flagellants menés par un zélote bien décidé à faire de Hugo le martyre christique qui accompagnera leurs processions en "éclaboussant du sang sacré de ses plaies l'Humanité pécheresse" . Très vite, la routine itinérante du groupe est troublée par le réveil de la Macula qui afflige Hugo de céphalées et de cauchemars terribles. Après quelques manifestations étranges qui leur permettent néanmoins d'échapper à l'implacable exorciste, Béatrice et Lucas sont catégoriques : les cauchemars d'Hugo, exaltés par la Macula, commencent à altérer le réel autour de lui (émotions contagieuses, confusion des sens, hallucinations, rats paniqués qui échappent à l'appel du garçonnet). Les jours passent, et les symptômes d'Hugo s'intensifient, mettant en péril à la fois sa santé mentale et la vie de ses compagnons. And then they discovered a teenage girl living in Brazil with a special affinity for traversing and moulding the data stream. They had discovered the first Googol. And the world was about to change.

One Artist on Five Continents
Elisabet Delbrück (1876-1967) was one of a number of Germans who came to New Zealand in the late 1930s. Unlike most, she had not intended to emigrate but was touring the country when World War II broke out. She was at first forbidden to leave and then chose to remain in Wellington. Her thirty years in Mahina Bay on Wellington harbour had a profound effect on all who knew her. This study aims to discover why she was so remarkable. It explores her early life, her marriage into a prominent German family and her qualification as an artist. She turned this into a profession, teaching and exhibiting on five continents in the 1920s and 1930s. She always travelled alone, observing the customs and beliefs of the people she met. In Australia and New Zealand in 1938 and 1939 she was wrongly suspected of spreading Nazi propaganda. Her story is also the story of a heroic group of Wellingtonians who helped her in the 1940s and valued her friendship till her death.

Hilma af Klint. The Five Notebook 1
In 1896, Hilma af Klint and four other like-minded women artists left the Edelweiss Society and founded the "Friday Group", also known as "The Five". They met every Friday for spiritual meetings, including prayers, studies of the New Testament, meditation and séances. The medium exercised automatic writing and mediumistic drawing. Eventually they established contact with spiritual beings whom they called "The High Ones". In 1896, the five women began taking meticulous notes of the mediumistic messages conveyed by the spirits. In time, Hilma af Klint felt she had been selected for more important messages. After ten years of esoteric training with "The Five", aged 43, Hilma af Klint accepted a major assignment, the execution of The Paintings for the Temple. This commission, which engaged the artist from 1906 to 1915, changed the course of her life. In 1908, Rudolf Steiner, leader of the German Theosophical Society, held several lectures in Stockholm. He also visited af Klint's studio and saw some of the early Paintings for the Temple. In 1913, Steiner founded the Anthroposophical Society, which af Klint joined in 1920 and remained a member for the rest of her life.

Like Man, Like Woman
Modern scholarship often discusses Roman women in terms of their difference from their male counterparts, frequently defining them as ‘other'. This book shows how Roman male writers at the turn of the first century actually described women as not so different from men : the same qualities and abilities pertaining to the domains of parenthood, intellect and morals are ascribed by writers to women as well as to men. There are two voices, however : a traditional, ideal voice and an individual, realistic voice. This creates a duality of representations of women, which recurs across literary genres and reflects a duality of mentality. How can we interpret the paradoxical information about Roman women given by the male-authored texts ? How does this duality of mentality inform us about gender roles and gender hierarchy ? This work analyses well-known, as well as overlooked, passages from the writings of Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, Suetonius, Quintilian, Statius, Martial and Juvenal and sheds new light on Roman views of women and their abilities, on the notions of private and public and on conjugal relationships. In the process, the famous sixth satire of Juvenal is revisited and its topic reassessed, providing further insights into the complex issues of gender roles, marriage and emotions. By contrasting representations of women across a broad spectrum of literary genres, this book provides consistent findings that have wide significance for the study of Latin literature and the social history of the late first and early second centuries.

Cochon sur gazon
Dans un monde où la dépression et les maladies de dégénérescence du cerveau gagnent du terrain, à quoi bon tenter de garder la tête froide ? C'est le fil conducteur de ces cinq histoires : les êtres sont libérés de l'injonction de trouver un sens à ce qu'ils font - et à la vie en général. Ainsi, les existences de nos protagonistes ne suivent pas l'ordre le plus attendu. Dans Cochon sur gazon, un vieil homme atteint de démence est convaincu que sa femme n'est pas morte, et imagine l'étrange relation de couple que cette dernière pourrait entretenir avec leur animal domestique - un cochon. Dans La Troisième maison sur la droite, une famille peu ordinaire conserve l'ectoplasme du père tout juste décédé dans une bouteille en verre faisant l'objet d'un fétichisme sexuel de la part du nouvel amant de la jeune veuve. Dans Dormir, un homme dévoré par des nuits d'insomnie ne trouve le repos que dans un sac de couchage... Dans ces récits où le grotesque le dispute au bizarre, l'auteur décrit des cas d'extrêmes isolements. Des individus tout recroquevillés, incapables de communiquer avec leurs semblables, "moulinant" dans leurs têtes jusqu'à se convaincre eux-mêmes de leurs idées folles.

Dans une région obscure
Un lac dont les eaux s'étendent dans une région obscure du corps ; une rivière au plus profond du coeur ; une douleur pareille à une pivoine ; des arbres sublimes qui ouvrent leurs bras comme pour prier... Il est fréquent de voir Eom Won-tae associer, dans ses poèmes, le lexique de l'anatomie humaine à celui de la nature, comme s'il existait un lien entre les organes vitaux et la structure organique du monde. La vérité, c'est que ce poète coréen écrit avec son corps. Un corps tout à la fois fragile et résistant, atteint d'une insuffisance rénale chronique qui l'oblige à se rendre régulièrement à l'hôpital. Un corps devenu métaphore de la terre en souffrance et de l'épuisement de ses ressources. Un corps aimant qui mise sur l'empathie et la capacité d'émerveillement pour se maintenir en vie.

The 'success' of a conversion depends on the group into which the convert is introduced. This study in early Christian ecclesiology from the perspective of house and family is guided by this sociological theory. Converts often met with problems in relation to their family. They joined a fellowship which conceived of itself as a family of brothers and sisters. It is the aim of this investigation to present the potential of the Christian fellowship to take the role of a new family in relation to its converts. This is done by means of historical material and cross-cultural comparisons. The relevance of the material for present-day churches and mission is considered.

Thinking about Physics
Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Too often, though, he believes, physicists haven't subjected their assumptions to thorough scrutiny. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood.
"Surely physics is more than a collection of experimental results, assembled to satisfy the curiosity of appreciative experts," Newton writes. Physics, according to Newton, has moved beyond the describing and naming of curious phenomena, which is the goal of some other branches of science. Physicists have spent a great part of the twentieth century searching for explanations of experimental findings. Newton agrees that experimental facts are vital to the study of physics, but only because they lead to the development of a theory that can explain them. Facts, he argues, should undergird theory.
Newton's explanatory sweep is both broad and deep. He covers such topics as quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, field theory, thermodynamics, the role of mathematics in physics, and the concepts of probability and causality. For Newton the fundamental entity in quantum theory is the field, from which physicists can explain the particle-like and wave-like properties that are observed in experiments. He grounds his explanations in the quantum field.
Although this is not designed as a standalone textbook, it is essential reading for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and researchers. This is a clear, concise, up-to-date book about the concepts and theories that underlie the study of contemporary physics. Political Economy and Fiction in the Early Works of Harriet Martineau
This book examines the early work of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), writer, journalist and woman of letters. She became famous in the 1830s with her Illustrations of Political Economy, a series of 25 short novels popularizing the basic principles of Political Economy. Also discussed are her two shorter series of tales from that period, Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated and Illustrations of Taxation. With these works Martineau took part in an intense debate about the role of economic theory in English society. Drawing on such authorities as Adam Smith Martineau offered her readers the possibility of understanding the impact of the Industrial Revolution and its concomitant changes.

The Reception of Grabbe's Hannibal in the German Theatre
After publication in 1835, Grabbe's Hannibal was overlooked by the theatre until this century. Because the drama does not lend itself easily to stage production, a number of adaptations were printed : these are analysed and their merits and shortcomings evaluated. The history of all productions is then viewed against the background of Germany's political and cultural history from 1918 to 1958, examining in detail the approaches of such producers as Jessner, Martin, Schmitt and Schalla and their audience impact. This analysis in turn sheds light on essential qualities of Hannibal.

Ce volume, amplement annoté et commenté, est le quatrième d'une série de cinq tomes regroupant les cours professés par Georges Cuvier de 1829 à 1832. Cette étude de grande envergure couvre de manière chronologique l'histoire des sciences naturelles au XVIIIe siècle. Le lecteur a ainsi accès à l'atelier historique de Georges Cuvier. Loin d'être une activité lui paraissant annexe au regard de ses travaux d'anatomiste, Cuvier y consacra un temps important, consultant de très nombreux ouvrages en de multiples langues (anglais, allemand, espagnol, latin, français). Elle lui conférait aussi une grande notoriété. Prononcées au Collège de France, ces leçons s'adressaient à un public large et consacraient son magistère sur les sciences naturelles de l'époque. Cuvier y présentait l'histoire des sciences comme une marche continue dont il scandait le développement. Il considérait les siècles ici étudiés comme une période de profonds changements. Louant la lutte contre les "dogmatismes religieux, il en faisait le vecteur d'une nouvelle liberté de pensée et d'écrire. Reléguant l'étude des anciens, les sciences naturelles seraient ainsi entrées dans un nouvel âge, celui de l'observation et de la classification.

The Image of the Woman in the Works of Ingeborg Bachmann
In this study an analysis of the women characters, who play a dominant part in Bachmann's prose writings, was presented. The results suggested a complex but coherent image. It was found that although the characteristics of this image deserved the appellation "sex-specific" and "traditional" they were infused with new values : the values of individualism, of a specifically female identity and of particular intense personal freedom. It was also found that the theme of personal freedom underlies all motivations, conflicts and situations of tragedy of Bachmann's heroines. Finally, it was found that the image of the woman is not only part of a distinct female-male antithesis, which often assumes violent dimensions, but has a redeeming function for a de-humanized world.
