The Power and the Glory. Graham Greene
The Power and the Glory est un roman atypique en ce sens qu'il tranche sur la production romanesque anglo-saxonne de tradition protestante pour s'inscrire dans un courant catholique plus minoritaire. Issu d'un voyage que Greene fit au Mexique en 1938, le livre prend pour cadre la persécution des prêtres dans l'état du Tabasco. Le récit fait la preuve du brio de Greene, transposant les techniques cinématographiques qui le fascinaient, jouant sur le mélange des genres, mêlant fatum et grotesque, chasse à l'homme et questionnement spirituel. On retrouve le décor triste, écrasé de soleil, les scènes fortes, les stratégies de répétition et le sens du dialogue très théâtral caractéristiques de Greene. Mais le roman se démarque du message monolithique en jouant sur le paradoxe, l'ambiguïté, l'interrogation. Le lecteur doit alors repérer des indices et des pistes de lecture pour mieux percevoir les enjeux du texte, et apprécier à sa juste mesure cette écriture moins simple qu'il n'y paraît de prime abord.

Les nouvelles vies de Flora et Max
Les oiseaux rares ont besoin d'un refuge. Quand ils se sont connus, Flora et Max vivaient chacun dans une cage. Elle en prison et lui reclus dans sa chambre. Leur seul moyen de communiquer était de s'écrire des lettres. Aujourd'hui, ils sont tous les deux sortis et ils reviennent à la vie. Mais revenir à la vie, ce n'est pas rentrer dans le moule. Flora va étudier l'anthropologie parce que c'est inutile, trouver un appartement avec des cafards, et prendre un petit boulot dans la maison de retraite pas comme les autres située près du lac. Max se retrouve en CAP cuisine un peu par hasard, il joue toujours du ukulélé et essaie d'apprivoiser les autres êtres humains. Ensemble, avec leur extravagance et leur joyeuse maladresse, ils vont s'aventurer dans la jungle de la vraie vie. Mais un projet dévorant de centre commercial menace le fragile équilibre qu'ils mettent en place. Il va falloir se battre et se frotter aux autres pour y survivre. Avec toutes les armes des inadaptés, et le courage des oiseaux.

La folle rencontre de Flora et Max
Lorsqu’elle découvre l’étonnante lettre de Max, Flora est à la fois heureuse et troublée, elle reçoit peu de courrier depuis qu’elle est en prison… Que peut bien lui vouloir ce garçon excentrique qui semble persuadé qu’ils ont des points communs ? Que peut-il partager avec une lycéenne condamnée à six mois ferme pour avoir violemment frappé une fille qui la harcelait ? Max ne tarde pas à révéler qu’il vit lui aussi enfermé. Il a quitté le lycée après une grave crise d’angoisse. Depuis, il ne peut plus mettre un pied dehors et vit retranché chez lui, avec ses livres, son ordinateur, son chat gourmet et son ukulélé. Flora et Max vont s’écrire, apprivoiser leur enfermement et peu à peu, avec humour et fantaisie, se construire une place dans le monde. A partir de 13 ans.

Syntactic Variation and Unconscious Linguistic Change
By examining adjectival relative clauses in the dialect of Dorset, in the Southwest of England, this volume illustrates how contemporary British dialects can contribute to our understanding of (unconscious) linguistic change. The analysis, which is based upon tape-recorded interviews with numerous informants, as well as written dialect imitations extracted from a variety of sources, shows that dialectal relativization is governed by an intricate network of both linguistic and non-linguistic (i.e. regional, social, stylistic) factors. The corpus has been incorporated in its entirety and perfectly lends itself for further dialectological research.

In our age, there is the need for traditional wisdoms to retain their validity and be intrinsic to our philosophic and scientific perceptions of the cosmos. We cannot do without their knowledge, their spiritual perspective, and their deep faith in the harmony of all nature. Ignoring these qualities has profound environmental implications. Global warming, environmental pollution, and the exhaustion of nature's resources are but a few of the symptoms of the nature's experiences as we continue to mistreat it in order to satisfy our own ends. This work helps us to realise that wherever we are, we are a part of nature. All the things around us are as presences, representing forces and powers of life that are not ours and yet are all part of us. Then we find them reflecting in ourselves, because we are nature, though not identical with it.

Après un premier travail photographique sur l'enfance indochinoise de Marguerite Duras, FLORE continue à " inventer photographiquement " une Indochine où ses grands-parents ont vécu, en s'inspirant des lieux évoqués dans les textes de Marguerite Duras. " C'est ce mélange d'intuition et d'incompréhension, cet aller-retour fait de récits entre soi et l'autre, entre Marguerite Duras et moi, ce défi de photographier quelque chose qui n'a même pas forcément existé, mais dont on accepte le postulat, cette vie qui aurait été vécue, il y a presque 100 ans et qu'elle nous raconte, cette vie à laquelle elle donne vie par l'écriture, qui me passionne. "

He was like a one-person Institute for Advanced Study, making fundamental discoveries in the fields of geometry, mechanics and hydrostatics.
The exposition is leisurely and supported by a brief life of Archimedes and some 120 illustrations. Any reader who is aware that the graph of y = x2 is a parabola can follow all the reasoning. Although the book uses only high school mathematics, professional mathematicians will find much here of interest as well.

Hymns: The Making and Shaping of a Theology for the Whole People of God
The theological potential of hymns has never been fully exploited. This study shows how hymns communicate theology and enable those without a formal theological education to enter into theological debate. A nineteenth century collection of English hymns and some contemporary Bemba hymns from the Zambian Copperbelt are examined and compared, within their theological, cultural and social contexts, to discover their response to death, judgement, heaven and hell. From this comparison and a study of how hymns are used in these churches, a model emerges whereby hymns can be used to make and shape theology. This model is observed in a Zambian parish and is also shown in practice in an English parish. Finally, there is a reflection on the implications of this model for Missiology and Ecclesiology showing, among other things, the need for a radical reassessment of the relationship between professional theologians and the rest of the Church.

The Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves Through, Along and Over a Three-Dimensional Conducting Half Space
A representation in terms of explicitly given generalized eigenfunctions is obtained for the semigroup S(t) = exp(-ixt) solving the Cauchy problem for the time-dependent Maxwell equations in the case of two distinct media filling the upper and lower half spaces of R3, whereby the upper medium is loss-free, while the lower has finite conductivity. The solution u = S(t)f, fED(1), can be written in the form u = uo+uo+uso+us++us-+op+up. Here uo and uo are, respectively, static and quasistatic parts of the solution : us+ and us+ consists of a superposition of AH modes -- modes whose frequencies have no real part and thus do not propagate ; uxx consist of superpositions of surface-wave modes, propagating in opposite directions according to + or -; uop and up are superpositions of plane-wave modes having the frequencies of the upper and lower media respectively. The structure of the AH and surface-wave components is determined : the are essentially scalar waves, and it is shown how such waves can be constructed explicitly from solutions of a simple problem for the scalar wave equation.

Une porte cachée entre les étagères s'ouvre sur un grenier secret, une grande pièce dominée par un énorme train miniature, que son grand-père a construit et complété tout au long de sa vie. Bien que ce soit important pour sa relation avec lui, un jour au cours d'un déjeuner en famille, il lui a révélé une autre de ses passions pas très secrètes - son amour durable pour la photographie - et a partagé avec elle ses archives de plus de 8000 photographies : un ensemble d'oeuvres vernaculaires capturant plus d'un demi-siècle de vie dans des couleurs vives. Knowledge and Symbolization in Saint John of the Cross
The works of Juan de la Cruz contains numerous passages dealing with human cognition both ordinary and mystical. This study traces San Juan's examination of the mystic's knowledge in and through God. The sixteenth-century Spanish thinker stresses that conditionality is a fundamental character of all human knowledge, and brings to light a complex movement of contiguity between one and another mode of cognitive activity. Also discussed is the expression, through the instruments of prose and poetry, of the mystic's supereminent and therefore ineffable experience of knowledge and love. Relying upon Juan de la Cruz's own texts, it is shown how a relative communication can be effected despite the barriers separating mystical from ordinary cognition.

En escortant Jan hors du désert, Enrir apprend que Dan-Tepurem occupe l'une des positions les plus élevées du royaume, celle de Mentor. Or, c'est pour se venger de cet homme qu'Enrir de Dirdell est revenu. Pour s'en rapprocher, il accepte d'aider Jan et son maître. Cependant, les loups rôdent et la rumeur veut que les Exilés s'organisent et cherchent à renverser le régime des enfants-rois...
