100 ans de suffrage universel au Luxembourg et en Europe. Actes du colloque, Textes en français et en allemand
Au mois de février 2020, la Chambre des Députés et le Musée national d'histoire et d'art de Luxembourg ont organisé un colloque scientifique dans le cadre de l'exposition #wielewatmirsinn - 100 ans de Suffrage universel au Luxembourg. Les intervenantes et intervenants ont tenté de répondre à des questionnements très divers : Comment s'est développée la revendication du suffrage universel en Europe ? Quel rôle a joué le suffrage des femmes dans cette histoire ? Quelles formes la démocratie parlementaire a-t-elle prises après la Première Guerre mondiale au Luxembourg et ailleurs ? Les contributions présentées à cette occasion et reprises dans le présent volume portent sur la lutte pour les droits politiques dans différents pays d'Europe, notamment au Grand-Duché. Des auteurs issus d'univers divers tentent d'aborder ces questions à travers différents prismes : histoire, sciences politiques, sciences sociales, études de genre, architecture, etc.

Thomas Mann's «Joseph und seine Brüder» and the Phallic Theology of the Old Testament
When Thomas Mann began to work on his Joseph novel, he was motivated to do so by the image of the beautiful seventeen-year-old youth and the erotic attraction this image exercised on him personally. He undertook to retell the biblical story of Joseph in order to explore the meaning of this attraction. In the phallic theology of the Old Testament - Israel's covenant with Yahweh was a sacred marriage, outwardly marked by circumcision, for the purpose of mutual sanctification and aggrandizement - Mann discovered the framework of a metaphysics of homoerotic desire. This book explores the many implications Mann found in his biblical source, including the paradoxical notion that a certain degree of suppression of the original desire is required if it is to continue to play its all-important role as a motivating force.

Third World Tourism Research 1950-1984
Since the early fifties tourism to developing countries has dramatically increased and in many a developing country it is now a sector of vital importance. This increase has been reflected in an equally impressive rate of growth in scholarly output. Despite this, there are as yet no indexed guides providing in a single volume easy access to the rapidly expanding body of knowledge. This bibliography seeks to fill the gap. It covers a period of 35 years and comprises more than 2000 titles in English, French, German and Dutch, on tourism in the Third World and in richer countries such as Greece, Yugoslavia, Portugal and Spain. The titles are chronologically arranged according to the year of publication, and for each year in alphabetical order. To assist readers the titles are catalogued by three indexes : an author and editor index, a geographical index and a subject index.

Chu Teh-Chun. In Nebula, Edition bilingue français-anglais
Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) est un acteur majeur de la peinture gestuelle abstraite. Né en Chine au sein d'une famille d'amateurs d'art, il est formé à l'Académie des beaux-arts mais subit la guerre sino-japonaise, des tragédies familiales, la disparition quasi totale de ses oeuvres de jeunesse puis l'exil - en 1949 vers Taïwan et en 1955 vers Paris, où il s'installe enfin. C'est dans ce cadre apaisé que son abstraction orageuse voit le jour. Excluant toute géométrie patente, celle-ci est constituée de nébuleuses et autres maelströms polychromes, modelés par de puissants effets de clair-obscur. Atmosphérique et hors échelle, chaque tableau est une matrice où notre vision se projette et s'abîme, nous faisant perdre tout repère spatial ou sémantique. Nourri de peinture tant classique que moderne, tant asiatique qu'occidentale, Chu formule la sensation mnésique du paysage, l'essence dynamique du geste et le surgissement de la lumière. La mise en perspective historique, au gré de parallèles, analogies et autres résonances, nous invite à cerner la singularité d'un régime abstrait sous-tendu par la logique organique du vivant, les formes et les forces de la nature, leurs phénomènes naturels, leur fluidité éruptive et leurs révolutions cosmogoniques. Car Chu s'est longtemps trouvé quelque peu en marge de son époque, en raison peut-être d'une personnalité réservée et d'un rejet de principe de toute stratégie commerciale. L'objet de cette monographie est donc, à l'aune du recul historique et du succès actuel de l'oeuvre, de qualifier certains de ses enjeux esthétiques et d'aider à dissiper quelques malentendus qui ont pu entourer sa réception. Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) is a major figure in the history of gestural abstract painting. Born in China into a family of art lovers, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou. Then came the Second Sino-Japanese war, family tragedy, the loss of nearly all his early work, and finally, exile-to Taiwan in 1949, then, in 1955, to Paris, where he settled. This peaceful home witnessed the emergence of his tortured abstraction, devoid of obvious geometry, in which polychrome nebulae and maelstroms clash with violent chiaroscuro effects. Atmospheric, impossible to scale, each painting is an arena into which vision is projected and submerged amid a loss of spatial and semantic bearings. Steeped in painting both classical and modern, Asian and Western, Chu's art recreates the memory of a landscape, the dynamic essence of gesture, and the brilliance of light. This study, by placing his work in its context, using parallels, analogies, and other resonances, focuses on the singularity of his approach to abstraction, underpinned by the organic logic of the living world, by natural phenomena, forms, forces, and by their eruptive fluidity and cosmogonic revolutions. For many years, Chu remained a somewhat marginal figure, perhaps because of his reserved personality and his principled rejection of commercial strategies. Making the most of historical perspective, and in light of the artist's current recognition, this monograph sets out to define some of the aesthetic themes shaping his work and to help dispel some of the misunderstandings that have surrounded its reception.

Seeing loud. Basquiat and music
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, New York City was financially and socially bankrupt, but the art and music scene was flourishing. During these years, the downtown New York music scene - no wave, hip-hop, disco funk and club culture - shaped Jean-Michel Basquiat as both a musician and an artist. This catalog for a traveling exhibition explores how Basquiat's painting has parallels in his music (sampling, cut-up, rapping), and takes a new look at his production as a writer and a poet in light of his connections with the then-emerging hip-hop culture. This beautifully illustrated exhibition catalog of rarely seen photographs and images sheds new light on Basquiat as a musician, exploring how his art and music are related, and how they reflect on his identity as a Black artist in the United States, the downtown New York music scene, and contemporary culture.

Local and Inter-Regional Traditions in Shipbuilding Proceedings of the Fifteenth International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology Marseilles 2018 Twenty-four years after the seventh ISBSA was held on the island of Tatihou, it became the turn of Marseille on the Mediterranean coast of France to have the honour of hosting the fifteenth International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology (ISBSA 15), which brought together, from 22 to 27 October 2018, some 300 scholars, PhD and post-doctoral researchers, and students from 36 countries belonging to almost 130 research bodies. The conference was organised by the Centre Camille Jullian - UMR 7299, which, on the occasion of ISBSA 15, celebrated 50 years of activity in the field of nautical archaeology. This volume includes 60 contributions from 93 authors covering different nautical areas (the Mediterranean, North Sea, Baltic, Atlantic, Pacific and South China Sea) from prehistory to the modern era. Knowledge and Symbolization in Saint John of the Cross
The works of Juan de la Cruz contains numerous passages dealing with human cognition both ordinary and mystical. This study traces San Juan's examination of the mystic's knowledge in and through God. The sixteenth-century Spanish thinker stresses that conditionality is a fundamental character of all human knowledge, and brings to light a complex movement of contiguity between one and another mode of cognitive activity. Also discussed is the expression, through the instruments of prose and poetry, of the mystic's supereminent and therefore ineffable experience of knowledge and love. Relying upon Juan de la Cruz's own texts, it is shown how a relative communication can be effected despite the barriers separating mystical from ordinary cognition.

Marriage and Divorce in the Plays of Hermann Sudermann
This study investigates Sudermann's plays from a socio-historical and literary-historical perspective. His plays are a response to a crisis of marriage. That crisis had its roots in the Romantic period and came to a head when the conservative Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch was introduced in 1900. Of particular significance is Es lebe das Leben (1902). The manuscripts of this play reveal that here Sudermann moved from a Realist treatment of marital difficulties to an exploration of the crisis of the realist literary system and a search for a Modernist treatment of divorce. His plays on marriage, divorce, courtship and the problems of single men and women constitute a sustained attempt to modify or at times radically to challenge the presentation of marriage in the Realist literary system.

Issues in the Philosophy of Language Past and Present
In the light of contemporary perspectives a good deal of traditional philosophical thought can be read as relating to the issue of 'Language versus Reality'. The chapters of this book vindicate this claim ; bringing together thinkers different both in temperament and interests like Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Aquinas, Heidegger and Gadamer they suggest that some of their major tenets reflect conceptual assumptions concerning linguistic meaning and reference. In trying to both identify and elucidate the assumptions at stake the author shows, both historically and systematically, that some of the problems experienced in the past as well as much of our contemporary concern with the same issue form a continuous line and a common endeavour ; and they have not yet come to an end.

Frontier and Utopia in the Fiction of Charles Sealsfield
This study examines the work of Charles Sealsfield (1793-1864), the Moravian-American writer, whose fiction marked the first serious literary treatment of America in the German language. More specifically, Sealsfield's work is discussed in the light of his experience in America and, above all, in the light of his change of identity from Karl Anton Postl - Moravian monk to Charles Sealsfield - American writer. It employs two concepts - frontier and utopia - to show how Sealsfield was influenced by the antebellum tradition in America, and how he, in turn, used the governing myths and symbols of his time to create an important statement about the relationship between ideology and power in the Age of Jackson.

Ambivalence and Irony in the Works of Joseph Roth
Did Joseph Roth, the socialist, revolutionary and sceptic, become a monarchist, reactionary and believer ? This work attributes the contradictory manifestations in the life and personality of Roth to the attitude of ambivalence and irony that characterised him and his generation. The historical and intellectual situation that led to the dominance of this attitude and Roth's susceptibility to it due to the circumstances of his life are discussed. A meticulous study of Roth's letters, journalistic work and novels follows substantiating the thesis advanced.

Au cours des dernières décennies, le système de propriété intellectuelle a connu des changements significatifs en lien avec l'émergence de nouvelles formes d'innovation et de création. Les défis posés par l'essor des moyens de communication, par l'expansion du commerce international, par la mise en oeuvre de plans d'actions répondant aux enjeux environnementaux, culturels et de santé publique, ont profondément influencé des domaines où la propriété intellectuelle joue un rôle important. Afin d'adapter le régime de la propriété intellectuelle à ce nouveau contexte, d'importantes initiatives sont en cours au niveau européen et international. Elles engagent une réflexion collective et nécessitent un véritable débat. Le scribe d'archives dans l'Occident médiéval. Formations, carrières, réseaux, Textes en français et anglais
Contrairement aux scribes " de bibliothèque ", les scribes " d'archives " – l'étiquette désigne ici de façon ouverte tous les acteurs de la pratique scripturaire dans le champ foisonnant des sources documentaires – sont très souvent les auteurs intellectuels des textes qu'ils tracent sur le parchemin ou le papier. Pour beaucoup d'entre eux, l'acte quotidien d'écrire n'est donc pas une fin en soi, ni même forcément un aspect prédominant du labeur ; ils exercent une ou plusieurs fonction(s) qui dépasse(nt) parfois très largement le cadre de cette activité technique. La palette de leurs profils socioprofessionnels présente une infinie variété, marquée par d'énormes écarts de statut et de prestige que le seul maniement commun de l'écriture ne saurait gommer. Qui étaient-ils vraiment ? Même si les médiévistes à l'oeuvre dans les archives les côtoient intimement à travers leurs productions écrites, bien peu de recherches leur ont été dédiées : l'historiographie se contente trop souvent d'images d'Epinal qui masquent la complexité et la diversité des situations de terrain. Certes, la plupart des scribes se dérobent à l'historien, frappés d'anonymat. D'autres, cependant, se laissent saisir à la faveur d'une carrière saillante ou d'un dossier loquace : en reconstituant leurs parcours, ce volume collectif vise à jeter les fondements d'une histoire sociale des " scribes d'archives " dans l'Occident latin du second Moyen Age.

Late-Imperial Russia: An Interpretation
Late-Imperial Russia deals with some of the great questions of modern Russian history. It uses methods of intellectual history, political economy, ethnography and quantitative history to analyse the Peasant Question in late- Imperial Russia. A study of ideas in action, the book is unique in letting all key participants speak : the intelligentsia, the state and the peasantry. It analyses their opinions, rôles and actions, explaining understandings of the fate of the peasants and the future of Russia. Key intellectual, political, demographic and socio-economic trends are assessed in tandem. Late-Imperial Russia is revealed as a deeply-divided society of three visions and two cultures, each dismissing and misconceiving the other. Caves et celliers dans l'Europe médiévale et moderne
Caves et celliers sont des espaces techniques dédiés au stockage et à la conservation, particulièrement des denrées alimentaires telles que le vin. Ces dépendances domestiques sont habituellement cachées, invisibles à la vue du public. Il en résulte que caves, celliers et autres structures souterraines des habitats font figure de parents pauvres de l'histoire de l'architecture.Pour autant, au Moyen Age comme à l'époque moderne, les caves sont essentielles à l'économie des habitations ou des bâtiments dont elles dépendent. Les techniques mises en oeuvre dans leur construction, l'organisation interne, les aménagements spécifiques, ou encore la manière dont elles furent utilisées, attestent l'importance qui leur a été accordée. Figeant le parcellaire et la présence de vestiges antérieurs, les caves sont des témoins essentiels pour comprendre les dynamiques de développement des villes. En milieu urbain, elles s'accompagnent parfois de réseaux souterrains formés par les carrières d'extraction de pierre. Bâtards et bâtardises dans l'Europe médiévale et moderne
Les auteurs ont cherché à poser les jalons d'une histoire sociale et culturelle de la bâtardise dans les sociétés européennes du Moyen Age et de l'époque moderne. La diversité des disciplines mobilisées (histoire, histoire du droit, linguistique, littérature, démographie historique) permet de mettre en valeur la pluralité des approches d'un statut intrinsèquement complexe, d'une réalité sociale irréductible à un modèle unique, dont l'appréciation par l'Eglise, la société ou la parenté oseille entre exclusion et intégration, stigmatisation et réhabilitation. Ils ont articulé l'approche théorique de ce que le droit nous dit d'un statut pensé comme outil de contrainte pour hiérarchiser les filiations et promouvoir l'institution matrimoniale, à celle, pratique, de profils ou de destins parti- culiers. La bâtardise renvoie à une "macule de geniture" ou un defectus nalalium qui stigmatise l'enfant (naturel, adultérin, ou sacrilège) né d'un couple qui n'était pas uni en "loial mariage". Les bâtards sont exclus des ordres sacrés et de (héritage de leurs parents ; leur témoignage est irrecevable en justice ; de nombreux métiers leur sont inaccessibles. L' "honnêteté de leur conversation" peut toutefois permettre de motiver une demande de dispense auprès du pape pour accéder aux ordres majeurs ou une légitimation auprès des pouvoirs souverains pour hériter de leurs parents ou accéder à des offices. Pour tes autres, théoriquement sans gens ni genus, quel destin se profile donc ? Une parentalité particulière s'exprime selon que l'enfant est accueilli dans une fratrie, dans la maison de son père, ou qu'il est abandonné aux institutions charitables qui se substituent au père charnel ; selon aussi que l'enfant naît ou non dans la noblesse qui lui offre un temps certaines opportunités d'ascension sociale. L'ambiguïté du regard des sociétés anciennes sur ce statut se révèle aussi dans la manière dont les littératures médiévales et modernes ont pu mobiliser la figure du bâtard, "monstre politique", incarnation d'une hybridation originelle qui permet de problématiser les normes sociales et politiques de leurs temps.

"En substituant l'absence à la preuve directe, Kourtney Roy souligne les impossibilités d'un discours d'évidence sur ces vies "minuscules" qui n'attirent jamais l'attention. En Colombie Britannique (Canada), depuis 1969, c'est-à-dire pendant plus de 50 ans, les meurtres vont s'étaler dans le temps. Des dizaines de femmes et de filles vont disparaître, quelques unes seront retrouvées mortes, dispersées le long de ce que l'on appelle désormais "l'autoroute des larmes" . Disparitions et crimes en majeure partie non élucidés. Ainsi ce transport ne sera en rien la description pittoresque du Grand Nord. Roy nous met à l'épreuve de percevoir, depuis des lieux vides en eux-mêmes et sans vie apparente, une humanité sacrifiée et reléguée. Face au déni d'une société, le rôle que Kourtney Roy accorde à la photographie est de s'attacher, malgré tout, à partager une douleur et à faire ressentir une tension qui ne peut trouver d'exutoire que dans le drame.

Le handicap dans les contextes africains ne pourrait pas être compris sans référence à la technologie de la vie journalière, en termes de mobilité et de transport, d'éducation, et d'interventions médicales. Ceci apporte une perspective humaine et sociale sur le handicap parce qu'il contextualise la technologie dans un cadre d'usagers, d'inventeurs, de producteurs et de distributeurs. La technologie dans les contextes africains demande ainsi une compréhension des pratiques culturelles et de l'innovation culturelle, sur le plan local et international. Les exemples sont tirés de la RD Congo et aussi de pays anglophones.

This book examines the Brechtian influence on Roger Planchon's three stagings of Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan (July 1954 ; October 1954 ; December 1958). The meaning of a Brechtian mise en scène is determined by an analysis of the Berliner Ensemble production of the same play (1957). A comparison of these stagings not only reveals the clash between the German and French theatrical traditions but the German mise en scène also provides a point of reference which underlines the similarities and differences between Planchon's and Brecht's staging methods.

De la race en Amérique a été publié en 2008 aux éditions Grasset, avant même l'investiture de Barack Obama comme candidat du Parti démocrate à l'élection présidentielle, et alors qu'il était donné perdant face à Hillary Clinton. Il a été un grand succès. Au mois de mars 2008, Barack Obama est attaqué par ses adversaires pour sa proximité avec un pasteur proche du mouvement des Black Panthers. Tout le contraire d'un discours politicien, De la race en Amérique est une réflexion qui dépasse les catégories américaines et peut s'appliquer à bien des sociétés modernes. Une leçon d'humanisme à l'heure où la vindicte, la division et l'agressivité systématique sont au pouvoir en Amérique et dans bien d'autres pays, Cette version, bilingue, est la seule édition mondiale autorisée par le Parti démocrate, qui a révisé le texte.

Oaths, Vows and Promises in the first Part of the French Prose Lancelot Romance
This book examines the narrative use made of oaths, vows and promises in a thirteenth-century work of fictional literature, reviewing the textual prominence accorded them by the writer in the light of legal texts of the Middle Ages that deal with the same subject. Medieval society had to deal with highly complex problems that arose out of the central importance accorded the given word. Jurists wrestled with the problems in an attempt to solve them ; the writer of a work of narrative fiction can explore such problems in terms of human drama. The writer of the prose Lancelot was clearly aware of the legal debate, and he used both the characters and plot of his fictional text to construct narrative sequences that allowed him to depict the moral and psychological perplexities that faced both society and individuals over these matters.

Cent ans après : la mémoire de la Première Guerre mondiale. Textes en français et anglais
Il y a cent ans prenait fin la Première Guerre mondiale. Ses commémorations nous permettent de reconsidérer dans son ensemble et dans ses spécificités les formes de la mémoire du conflit. Mais peut-on parler d'une mémoire ? Il existe en réalité une pluralité de mémoires qui varient selon les origines familiale et sociale, mais qui restent largement nationale et hétérogène d'un pays à un autre. L'objet de cette publication est de cartographier l'évolution dans le temps, jusqu'à aujourd'hui, des mémoires de la Première Guerre mondiale en Europe, à travers les textes d'éminents historiens. Trop souvent négligée, la péninsule des Balkans est ici particulièrement étudiée à côté des grandes puissances traditionnelles européennes. Compte tenu de leurs histoires respectives, certains pays ont vu la mémoire la Grande Guerre avoir une forte dynamique historiographique et mémorielle quand dans d'autres elle a été relayée au second plan par d'autres événements contemporains. Ces articles consacrés aux cas nationaux coexistent avec des études novatrices consacrées aux dimensions paneuropéennes et transnationales des mémoires, courants historiographiques émergents qui ouvrent une perspective différente.
