Employment, Well-Being and Gender
This book examines welfare effects of gender-related inequalities in Korean households and labor markets. It uses subjective well-being data to show that reductions of excessive levels of working hours did improve family well-being in the past decade. Moreover, benefits from major life events like marriage can differ greatly by sex if traditional gender roles dominate and women contribute much less than men to household earnings. Furthermore, the study examines dynamics in rural East Asian economies and their impact on individual welfare outcomes. Both land redistribution and productivity-enhancing reforms are found to have been highly beneficial for Korean development. The Indonesian case study demonstrates the importance of cash-crop decisions and the growing non-farm sector for rural development.

Elle retrouve sa cousine, qui joue avec le feu comme la mère d'Emma avant elle, et Roo, le garçon dont elle était inséparable enfant. Tel un détective, elle va remonter le temps en arrière, pour découvrir non seulement qui elle est, mais aussi quelle adolescente a été sa mère. Car avant de tomber amoureuse d'un fils de famille privilégié, celle-ci a perdu son meilleur ami dans un étrange accident de bateau à moteur... Un roman de Sarah Dessen n'est jamais, jamais une déception. La reine de la fiction young adult observe les mouvements du coeur d'un adolescente dans la tourmente avec une justesse stupéfiante - ce qui fait dire à tout le milieu littéraire aux Etats-Unis qu'elle est, ni plus ni moins, une rock star. Emotion à fleur de peau et regard acéré sur les choses : venez savourer en sa compagnie une gourmandise à nulle autre pareille...

Le cinéma par la danse
Entrer dans un film par la danse, cela suppose qu'à un moment au moins quelqu'un ou quelque chose danse. Mais au-delà de la comédie musicale, où la chorégraphie et la musique sont reines, il arrive qu'un film se mette soudain à danser. Et ça danse partout, n'importe où, dans l'eau avec Esther Williams, dans une cabane avec Charlie Chaplin, en boîte de nuit avec Rita Hayworth ou au, Far West avec Henry Fonda. Le peuple de Casque d'or valse dans les bastringues, les aristocrates du Guépard dans les raouts. Tout le monde se retrouve au Cabaret de Bob Fosse. Lola de Jacques Demy fait un duo avec Lola Montés de Max Ophuls. Des figures crèvent l'écran, Isadora Duncan ou Rudolph Valentino, Elvira Madigan ou Pina Bausch. Le mal dans le cinéma allemand
Le cinéma allemand est depuis l'origine parcouru par l'idée du mal : en cela est son originalité, voire sa spécificité. De l'Allemagne de Weimar jusqu'aux années 2000, l'ouvrage montre comment le mal est un véritable fil rouge dans la création cinématographique. L'expressionnisme des années 1920 invente le film d'horreur et impose la figure d'un mal métaphysique qui contamine l'ensemble du monde. Au même moment naît un cinéma engagé, qui dépeint une nouvelle figure du mal, celle de la fatalité du déterminisme social : prostitution, ascension sociale et chute. Pour le pouvoir nazi, le cinéma est un objet de propagande totale, entre divertissement et idéologie, et le mal est désormais les "autres", qui veulent souiller la pureté de l'Allemagne. Après une après-guerre amnésique, où le mal n'existe plus, ce dernier revient au coeur du jeune cinéma allemand des années 1970 qui interroge le pourquoi et les survivances du nazisme. Le mal n'est plus l'autre, mais soi : son pays, ses parents, donc sa propre histoire. Penser le mal, c'est donc penser la responsabilité et se penser soi-même. Depuis les années 2000, la question n'est plus de savoir si le mal existe mais plutôt comment le bien et la morale sont possibles.

Shakespeare, Hogarth and Garrick. Plays, Painting and Performance
In London in 1770 Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799) remarked, 'What a work could be written on Shakespeare, Hogarth and Garrick ! There is something similar in the genius of all three. ' Two-and-a-half centuries on, Robin Simon's highly original and illuminating book takes up the challenge. William Hogarth (1697-1764) and David Garrick (1717-1779) closely associated themselves with Shakespeare, embodying a relationship between plays, painting and performance that had been understood since Antiquity and which shaped the rules for history painting drawn up by the Académie royale in Paris in the seventeenth century. History painting was considered the highest form of art : a picture illustrating a moment drawn from just a few lines in a revered text. Hogarth's David Garrick as Richard III (1745) transformed those ideas because, although it looked like a history painting, it was also a portrait of an actor in performance. With it, Hogarth established the genre of theatrical portraiture, a new and distinctively British kind of history painting. This book offers a fresh examination of theatrical portraits through close analysis of the pictures and of the texts used in performance. It also examines the central role of the theatre in British culture, while highlighting the significance of Shakespeare, Hogarth and Garrick in the European Enlightenment and the rise of Romanticism. In this context another trio of genius features prominently : Lichtenberg, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Denis Diderot. Familiar paintings and performances are seen in an entirely new light, while unfamiliar pictures are also introduced, including major paintings and drawings that have never been published. The final chapter shows that the inter-relationship between plays, painting and performance survived into the age of cinema, revealing the pictorial sources of Laurence Olivier's legendary film Richard III.

Cuckoos, Cowbirds and Other Cheats
Cuckoos and cowbirds are amongst the select bird groups renowned as professional parasites, who always lay their eggs in the nests of other species. Occasional parasitic laying is also widespread in many other birds, who gladly parasitise the nests of their own kind when the opportunity arises.
In this fascinating new book, Nick Davies describes the natural histories of all the brood parasites and examines the exciting questions they raise about the evolution of cheating and the arms race between parasites and their hosts. Brood parasites fill their armoury with adaptations including exquisite egg mimicry, rapid laying, ejection of host eggs, murder of host young, chick mimicry and manipulative begging behaviour: ploys shown by recent research to have evolved in response to host defence behaviour or through competition among the parasites themselves. While many host species appear defenceless, accepting parasite eggs quite unlike their own, others are more discriminating against odd-looking eggs and some have evolved the ability to discriminate against odd-looking chicks as well. How does this arms race proceed? Will defenceless hosts improve their armoury in time, or are there sometimes constraints on hosts which allow the parasites to gain the upper hand? And why are so few species obliged only to lay eggs in host nests? Have host defences limited the success of brood parasitism, or is it in fact much commoner than we suspect, but occurring mainly when birds parasitise the nests of their own kind?
All of these puzzles are examined in descriptions of the natural history of each of the groups of parasites in turn. Here is a book with wide appeal, both to amateur naturalists fascinated by this most singular and macabre of behaviours and to ornithologists and ecologists interested in the evolution of ecology and behaviour. 1001 Nights. Edition français-anglais-allemand
In the late 1910s, in a Europe ravaged by World War I, Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen put the finishing touches on his illustrations of A Thousand and One Nights. The results are considered masterpieces of early 20th-century illustration : bursting with sumptuous colors of deep blues, reds, and gold leaf, and evoking all the magic of this legendary collection of Indo-Persian and Arabic folktales, compiled between the 8th and 13th centuries. However, publishers retreated from Nielsen's project in the financially strapped postwar climate, and the publication never happened. A rising star, Nielsen moved on to other work. This world heritage classic's spectacular pen, ink, and watercolor images remained under lock and key for 40 years. Published just once in the 1970s, the illustrations were rescued from oblivion after Nielsen's death in 1957 and are now held by the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in two private collections. This publication is a unique compilation of fine art prints and stunning illustrations reproduced directly from Nielsen's original watercolors-the only complete set of his extraordinary drawings to have survived. The book features descriptions of all of the images and three generously illustrated essays on the making of this series, the origin of Nielsen's unique imagery, and a history of the tales. In addition, it shows many unpublished or rarely seen artworks by Nielsen and intricate black-and-white drawings Nielsen created for the original publication.

Living in Two Worlds
This is a study of Singapore pastors' worldview & understanding of the epidemiology, symptomatology and management of possession behaviour. The pastors' accounts are compared with those from the scientific disciplines, and convergences and divergences noted. Factors shaping both the pastors' and the scientific discourses are examined. The pastors are shown to respond to competing scientific paradigms by reinforcing their two-worlds worldview. They either live mainly in the other world, or in each world at a time, or between the two worlds. Based on theological reflection focusing on epistemology, theodicy & cosmology, the author shows that the paradigm of living in both worlds simultaneously is the most appropriate pastoral response. The theological vision of the coexisting worlds and the pastoral task of unmasking and resisting evil in all its varieties and depths are then discussed.

The Image of the Woman in the Works of Ingeborg Bachmann
In this study an analysis of the women characters, who play a dominant part in Bachmann's prose writings, was presented. The results suggested a complex but coherent image. It was found that although the characteristics of this image deserved the appellation "sex-specific" and "traditional" they were infused with new values : the values of individualism, of a specifically female identity and of particular intense personal freedom. It was also found that the theme of personal freedom underlies all motivations, conflicts and situations of tragedy of Bachmann's heroines. Finally, it was found that the image of the woman is not only part of a distinct female-male antithesis, which often assumes violent dimensions, but has a redeeming function for a de-humanized world.

La naissance de la grammaire dans l'Antiquité grecque
Le présent ouvrage est né d'un étonnement : comment se fait-il que la grammaire se soit si tardivement constituée en discipline autonome - entre le second siècle avant J. C. et le premier siècle après J. C. -, bien postérieure donc à l'invention de la conceptualité philosophique ? L'étude du langage, loin d'être d'emblée présentée comme l'objet d'une discipline spécifique, fut longtemps distribuée entre différentes disciplines : phonétique, métrique, onomastique, rhétorique, poétique, logique, dialectique. L'enquête a permis de montrer que le caractère tardif de l'émergence de la grammaire devait être mis au compte du projet spécifique qui unit les philosophies platonicienne, aritotélicienne et stoïcienne, projet de dire les réalités dans le logoi (discours, énoncés, raisonnements...), et de la mainmise corrélative, par la philosophie, sur l'analyse du langage.
