The lion and the eagle
1944 : le Japon impérial écrase toujours la majeure partie de l'Asie sous sa botte. Déterminés à reconquérir leur emprise sur la Birmanie, les Britanniques envoient une unité de forces spéciales, les Chindits, loin derrière les lignes japonaises, avec pour mission d'attaquer l'ennemi partout où ils le pourront. Ils vivront un vértaible cauchemar, comme seule la Seconde Guerre mondiale peut en offrir. Le colonel Keith Crosby et le docteur Alistair Whitamore, deux vétérans de la longue retraite à travers la Birmanie deux ans auparavant, ont de vieux comptes à régler avec les Japonais. Mais ni la jungle ni l'ennemi ne sont devenus moins sauvages, et lorsque la fusillade éclate et que les Japonais s'abattent sur la petite force britannique, chaque homme sera mis à rude épreuve. Le scénariste Garth Ennis (The Boys, Preacher, Out of the Blue) et le dessinateur PJ Holden (Stringbags) présentent un récit de guerre infernale dans la jungle, où des êtres humains apparemment civilisés sombrent dans un coeur apocalyptique de ténèbres.

The book focuses on the evolution of the Gothic fiction in America from Charles Brockden Brown to Herman Melville in the context of the aesthetics of the sublime. Starting with a reading of Brown's Gothic romances – Wieland and Edgar Huntly – and concluding with an analysis of Melville's Pierre, the author demonstrates the relevance of the Kantian concept of the sublime for the nineteenth-century American literature of horror. An inspiration to present the development of the American Gothic in the period under scrutiny as a coherent process has been also the psychoanalytic theory of Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok. Moreover, the study contains an attempt to place R.H. Dana, Sr and W. Allston in the American literary canon.

Charles Darwin's Zoology Notes & Specimen Lists from H.M.S. Beagle
Two long sets of scientific notes were made by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. Those transcribed here are concerned with natural history, and although in 1839 he drew on them quite extensively in writing his famous " Journal of Researches ", neither they nor his geology notes have previously been published. He was a superb observer, and recorded vividly and accurately his first impressions of the appearance and behaviour of the wide range of animals, from ants to ostriches, encountered during his travels. Often he performed little experiments on the creatures that he captured, and he was never happy until he had exhaustively explored the why and wherefore of every one of his observations. During the long periods on board ship, he carried out a thorough analysis of hitherto unrecognised features of the internal anatomy of a variety of marine invertebrates, and made elegant pencil drawings of them under his dissecting microscope. The volume also includes his lists of 1 500 specimens preserved in Spirits of Wine, and some 3 500 not in Spirits, with impeccably accurate cross references to the main notes. Although his notes were made strictly for his own use, and were often highly technical, they were well written throughout, and contain many highly readable passages. Only towards the very end of the voyage were his first doubts about the immutability of species consciously pressed, but here are to be found the first seeds of his theory of evolution, and of the important new fields of behavioural and ecological study of which he was one of the principal founders.

The Sagho djebel is the eastern extension of the Anti-Atlas, a volcanic mountain with granitic mamelons, basaltic organs, chaos of black shales, pink sandstones... at the gates of the Sahara. As far as the eye can see, large wild, arid spaces. A desolate land made for the lonely DPM. And for a thousand miles around, silence is the only companion. Absolute plenitude and the desire to take to the track. From flat expanses to rolling hills, from sharp relief to steep canyons : pure, original nature. The character is strong, rustic but the heart is soft. The colours are soft and gentle. Ochre, pink, brown, violet, the colour chart stretches in a gradation of shimmering pastels, sometimes accompanied by an overwhelming heat. Eldorado in the heart of the desert, rare are the oases ; modest green spots in the infinitely large, they are the reminders that we are on African soil. The wild charm of the Sagho is due to its exceptional geology : high cliffs and steep peaks, tabular escarpments and deep canyons in the middle of which caravans of camels and mules circulate. When you arrive on these immense plateaus, the lunar horizon is so vast that you want to go everywhere at once to see if it is really as beautiful elsewhere ! The Sagho also surprises by the richness of its lights : limpid like those of the nearby Sahara, or sometimes in half-tone, as in the neighbouring Dades valley. The Sagho is also the Morocco of the last Berber nomads, descendants of the ancient lords Aït Atta. In autumn, after leaving the snows of the High Atlas, they set up their dark wool tents on the slopes of the jebel until spring. They can neither read nor write, but they are sure of their way through the Atlas Mountains and the Moroccan desert. In the Sagho, they have built houses of unbaked stone, dug wells, planted almond trees, grown wheat, barley and various vegetables. Others built herds of goats and sheep, and caravans of camels. Towards the Sun. The Artist - Traveller at the Turn of the Twentieth Century
Bien qu'il y ait eu des monographies sur les artistes voyageurs britanniques du XVIIIème et du début du XIXème siècles, il n'existe aucune enquête de ce que l'écrivain Henry Blackburn décrivait de "voyage artistique" un siècle plus tard. A partir de 1900, le "Grand Touriste" est devenu un globe-trotteur muni d'un appareil photo et, malgré le développement de la photographie instantanée, l'enregistrement visuel immédiat en huile et aquarelle reste le plus répandu. Kenneth McConkey's exciting new book explores the complex reasons for this in a series of chapters that take the reader from southern Europe to north Africa, the Middle East, India and Japan revealing many artist-travellers whose lives and works are scarcely remembered today. He alerts us to a generation of painters, trained in academies and artists' colonies in Europe that acted as crèches for those would go on to explore life and landscape further afi eld. The seeds of wanderlust were sown in student years in places where tuition was conducted in French or German, and models were often Spanish, Italian, or North African. At fi rst the countries of western Europe were explored afresh and cities like Tangier became artists' haunts. Training that prioritized plein air naturalism led to the common belief that a well-schooled young painter should be capable of working anywhere, and in any circumstances. At the height of British Imperial power, and facilitated by engineering and technological advance, the burgeoning tourism and travel industry rippled into the production of specialist goods and services that included a dedicated publishing sector. Essential to this phenomenon, the artist-traveller was often commissioned by London dealers to supply themed exhibitions that coincided with contracts for colour-illustrated books recording those exotic parts of the world that were newly available to the tourist, traveller, explorer, emigrant, or colonial civil servant. These works were not, however, value-neutral, and in some instances, they directly address Orientalism, Imperialism, and the Post-Colonial, in pictures that hybridize, or mimic indigenous ways of life. Behind each there is a range of interesting questions. Does experience live up to expectation ? Is the street more desirable than the ancient ruin or sacred site ? How were older ideas of the 'picturesque' reborn in an age when 'Grand Tours' once confi ned to Italy, now encompassed the globe ? McConkey's wideranging survey hopes to address some of these issues. This richly illustrated book explores key sites visited by artist-travellers and investigates artists including Frank Brangwyn, Mary Cameron, Alfred East, John Lavery, Arthur Melville, Mortimer Menpes, as well as other under-researched British artists. Drawing the strands together, it redefi nes the picturesque, by considering issues of visualization and verisimilitude, dissemination and aesthetic value.

The Christian theology of religions at present faces a crisis. What precisely is the task of the theology of religions ? Does it merely consist in interpreting the non-Christian religions as steps, phases or contributions in the light of Christianity ? Has one from the theological side conceded the maximum to the non-Christian religions by acknowledging them as anonymous Christianity (Karl Rahner)? This study is an exploration on how one shall liberate the religion of the other from anonymity : how one shall leave the other with his/her own name. The model of thought employed in this study is gained through an analysis of the intercultural process of understanding, explained with instances from Africa and South America.

L'homme qui torpilla Wall Street
Qui peut s’opposer au système financier international et à son temple, Wall Street ? Barack Obama devait en découdre : "Si les banques veulent se battre, je suis prêt". Loin d’être dominées, et malgré leurs excès qui ont failli dégénérer en une catastrophe majeure en 2008 et 2009, les banques et la haute finance ont mis au pas, plus implacablement que jamais, les peuples à la base, les Etats au sommet. Wall Street est-il donc intouchable? Non, à condition de trouver un adversaire à sa mesure, qui en connaisse les arcanes. Un homme du sérail... Ce personnage de roman s’appelle Saviour (Le Sauveur) Borg, gouverneur de la Banque centrale de Malte. Il a pour maître à penser un obscur mais non moins génial savant français qui s’est distingué par ses recherches sur les lois fondamentales des équilibres au siècle dernier. Borg va réussir seul, là où les plus puissants ont échoué, en retournant contre la haute finance ses propres armes : la spéculation et l’information. Palestinien par sa mère, Borg va aussi appliquer la théorie des équilibres au conflit israélo-palestinien.

Aucun des pays européens ne peut y faire face seul, pas plus que la Maison Europe d'ailleurs. Pas plus le Japon que nos alliés en Asie, pas plus le Brésil, et pas les Etats-Unis qui sont venus ici nous réclamer de l'aide. Alors qui d'autre ? Sûrement pas l'Inde ou la Chine, ces deux ogres qui attendent la prochaine occasion pour nous sauter à la gorge (...) Que faire alors ? - Nos propres spécialistes doivent étudier l'impasse américaine, se réunir avec les autres pays pour mettre comptes sur table et partager équitablement le secours à apporter à Wall Street, avec les conditions qui s'imposent. (...) La seule solution : l'unité de l'Occident. Il n'est plus question de nous déchirer pour des marchés de broutille, il nous faut survivre tout simplement. Evoquer Berlin 1885 n'est pas une mauvaise idée à l'heure où la Chine et l'Inde festoient à notre place en Afrique. Ce Continent est vierge d'entreprise humaine, comparé aux autres. Wall Street ou Le miracle américain
L'idée que la société américaine connaît depuis quelques années un véritable miracle repose sur l'existence d'une croissance économique qui ne se relâche pas, alors que l'Europe connaît une stagnation elle aussi durable. Mais cette idée de miracle s'alimente surtout à la hausse spectaculaire de la bourse américaine, qui aura multiplié par plus de quatre, en dix ans, le patrimoine des heureux détenteurs d'actions américaines. Cette santé exceptionnelle de Wall Street accompagne, paraît-il, la création extrêmement rapide d'un réseau de communication mondial : Internet. Mais, à y regarder de plus près, ce miracle a d'autres explications. L'une, qui ne peut que nous surprendre, réside dans l'accroissement continu de la durée du travail aux Etats-Unis. L'autre tient à l'augmentation continue et considérable des inégalités de revenu et de fortune. Le président de Walt Disney a gagné en 1998 autant que 70 000 " pauvres ". Enfin, il est évident que la santé des Etats-Unis est un effet de notre démobilisation à l'égard de l'investissement, de l'entreprise et de l'innovation. Ce sont les pays riches d'Europe et d'Asie qui financent l'exceptionnelle croissance des Etats-Unis. Ce sont les rentiers du monde entier, dont nous faisons partie, qui donnent aux Américains les moyens de connaître leur miracle.

The Whitman-Hartmann Controversy
The facts in the relationship of Sadakichi Hartmann and Walt Whitman have never been clarified, particularly Hartmann's controversial interview with the poet and its publication in the "New York Herald", April 14, 1889. Of more importance was Hartmann's attempt to found a Whitman Society and the opposition of jealous Whitman associates who frustrated his efforts, although a Whitman Society was founded as the result of his initial work. Further, Hartmann's life-long interest in the poet and his various publications are not generally known. The introduction and edition of his writings will elucidate this literary association.

Living in Two Worlds
This is a study of Singapore pastors' worldview & understanding of the epidemiology, symptomatology and management of possession behaviour. The pastors' accounts are compared with those from the scientific disciplines, and convergences and divergences noted. Factors shaping both the pastors' and the scientific discourses are examined. The pastors are shown to respond to competing scientific paradigms by reinforcing their two-worlds worldview. They either live mainly in the other world, or in each world at a time, or between the two worlds. Based on theological reflection focusing on epistemology, theodicy & cosmology, the author shows that the paradigm of living in both worlds simultaneously is the most appropriate pastoral response. The theological vision of the coexisting worlds and the pastoral task of unmasking and resisting evil in all its varieties and depths are then discussed.

Not satisfied with what nature offered, human beings wanted to go beyond reality and invented mysterious and intriguing creatures populating their world. During Antiquity, every culture had its own strange creatures, that mixed the forms of one or more animal, plant and human species in an infinite number of more-or-less fanciful combinations. Griffins, sphinxes, mermaids, centaurs, satyrs, pygmies, werewolves, winged monsters and unspeakable hybrids, fantastic beasts abound in the imagination of many populations throughout Antiquity. Most of them continue to live, sometimes transformed, through fairy tales, literature, movies and videogames. Faced with the abundance and variety of the ancient fantastic bestiary, the questions that come to mind are : Where do fantastic beasts come from ? How do they appear in different cultures ? What is their history, how did they survive until now ? And above all, what are fantastic beasts ? This book will explore these questions through the lens of archaeology, art history, philology and philosophy. The result is a hybrid book, precisely like the fantastic animals that constitute its object, a book which offers different approaches of analysis while being aware that our means are often vain to capture these elusive figures, which ultimately are more like us than they seem. Man, like Oedipus, will often prove to be more monstrous than the Sphinx...
