Des images muettes qui, par leur force d'évocation, sont souvent aussi parlantes que des cases de BD.Ce très bel ouvrage recueille un florilège des illustrations que Mezzo a pu produire dans sa carrière hors bande dessinée. On prend plaisir à y retrouver son trait incisif, précis et sensuel, autour de quelques-uns de ses thèmes favoris : la musique, l'érotisme et le fantastique. Après une longue journée passée à dessiner ses séries en cours, Ju/CDM dessine pour se reposer. Il dessine des requins. C'est son fils de trois ans qui lui a transmis cette passion dévorante. Depuis plusieurs années, dans des carnets de différentes tailles, Julien dessine des requins puis les poste sur Facebook, où ils rencontrent un grand succès. A ce jour, il en a dessiné plus de 200. Il est une chose dont peu se souviennent, c'est que l'Allemagne fut une puissance colonisatrice. De 1883 à 1916, elle occupa ce qu'on appelait alors le Sud-Ouest africain, l'actuelle Namibie. Il en est une autre que beaucoup ignorent, c'est que cette colonie fut le théâtre du premier génocide du xxe siècle. Un génocide oublié, occulté même, car le premier rapport officiel - le fameux Blue Book - sur le massacre des Hereros et des Namas fut soustrait à la connaissance du public en 1926. Elise Fontenaille-N'Diaye, alors qu'elle enquêtait sur son aïeul, le général Mangin, a retrouvé ce rapport disparu. Dès lors, elle se devait de raconter. Si ce livre vise à ranimer le souvenir de cette sombre page de l'histoire du colonialisme, il ne se veut pas un ouvrage de spécialiste. L'auteur y donne son point de vue d'écrivain, son point de vue personnel. Quelque part entre le désert du Kalahari et la presqu'île de Shark Island, au large de Lüderitz, s'est déroulée une macabre répétition générale, préfiguration des exterminations à venir.

This book is based on detailed interviews with a group of Irish women who have experienced marital separation. It links the women's accounts with literature on the values and beliefs about marriage, women and family which were prevalent when they were growing up in Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s. The book chronicles their young adult years, the early stages of their marriages and the events and processes which led to their separations. It explores the women's emotional reactions at the time of separating, the types of support which they found beneficial and the personal, social and financial consequences of having separated. Although the book is written from a sociological perspective, the combination of theory and practical insights make it accessible to a wide variety of readers. Quentin Blake and the Demoiselles des Bords de Seine
Quentin Blake is one of the best-known illustrators of our time. He was Roald Dahl's regular illustrator, and their books have enjoyed world popularity with generations of children. Blake has collaborated with many other well-known authors and also created his own picture-books such as Clown and Zagazoo. Quentin Blake was born in England in 1932. For more than 20 years he taught in and then led the illustration department of the Royal College of Art. In 1999 he became the first Children's Laureate and in 2005 was appointed CBE for his services to children's literature. In France, where he spends a great deal of his time and where he has been published by Gallimard for the past 30 years, Quentin Blake has the same huge reputation as in Great Britain. His work has been exhibited there, and he has produced several books especially for French readers. In 2002 he was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. It was on account of this reputation that he was invited by the Petit Palais to select and present the exhibition Quentin Blake et les Demoiselles des Bords de Seine, and in the exhibition and this book he displays his enthusiasm for 19th century French art with a perceptiveness and liveliness which will speak to readers of all ages.

Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Too often, though, he believes, physicists haven't subjected their assumptions to thorough scrutiny. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood.
"Surely physics is more than a collection of experimental results, assembled to satisfy the curiosity of appreciative experts," Newton writes. Physics, according to Newton, has moved beyond the describing and naming of curious phenomena, which is the goal of some other branches of science. Physicists have spent a great part of the twentieth century searching for explanations of experimental findings. Newton agrees that experimental facts are vital to the study of physics, but only because they lead to the development of a theory that can explain them. Facts, he argues, should undergird theory.
Newton's explanatory sweep is both broad and deep. He covers such topics as quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, field theory, thermodynamics, the role of mathematics in physics, and the concepts of probability and causality. For Newton the fundamental entity in quantum theory is the field, from which physicists can explain the particle-like and wave-like properties that are observed in experiments. Both national heroes and the nation state had been conceived with a similar moral political mindset that looked for new ways to identify sources for commonality. The confluence of political theory and Realpolitik attested to three classical types of polities, i.e. civitas popularis (democracy), regnum (kingship), and optimatium (aristocracy), as found at that time in Scotland, Norway and Lithuania respectively. The author shows the varied impact these patterns had on heroic traditions. The long record of national heroes in Scotland is explained as a vestige of the legacy of civic humanism, the continuing traditions of the heroic king-lines in Norway are seen as a result of long-standing absolutism, while the belated arrival of national heroes in Lithuania is excused by the country's aristocratic if at times oligarchic past.
