PIONEERS OF REPRESENTATION THEORY: FROBENIUS, BURNSIDE, SCHUR, AND BRAUER
The year 1897 was marked by two important mathematical events: the publication of the first paper on representations of finite groups by Ferdinand Georg Frobenius ( 1849-1917) and the appearance of the first treatise in English on the theory of finite groups by William Burnside (1852-1927). Burnside soon developed his own approach to representations of finite groups. In the next few years, working independently, Frobenius and Burnside explored the new subject and its applications to finite group theory.
They were soon joined in this enterprise by Issai Schur (1875-194 1) and some years later, by Richard Brauer (1901-1977). These mathematicians' pioneering research is the subject of this book. It presents an account of the early history of representation theory through an analysis of the published work of the principals and others with whom the principals' work was interwoven. Also included are biographical sketches and enough mathematics to enable readers to follow the development of the subject. An introductory chapter contains some of the results involving characters of finite abelian groups by Lagrange, Gauss, and Dirichlet, which were part of the mathematical tradition from which Frobenius drew his inspiration.
This book presents the early history of an active branch of mathematics. It includes enough detail to enable readers to learn the mathematics along with the history. The volume would be a suitable text for a course on representations of finite groups, particularly one emphasizing an historical point of view.

The Phantom and the Abyss
The book focuses on the evolution of the Gothic fiction in America from Charles Brockden Brown to Herman Melville in the context of the aesthetics of the sublime. Starting with a reading of Brown's Gothic romances – Wieland and Edgar Huntly – and concluding with an analysis of Melville's Pierre, the author demonstrates the relevance of the Kantian concept of the sublime for the nineteenth-century American literature of horror. An inspiration to present the development of the American Gothic in the period under scrutiny as a coherent process has been also the psychoanalytic theory of Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok. Moreover, the study contains an attempt to place R.H. Dana, Sr and W. Allston in the American literary canon.

The genetics and breeding of Taro (Clolocasia esculenta(L.) Schott)
Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) is an ancient and important root crop and more than 400 million people include taro in their diets. It is grown as a root crop, as a leafy vegetable and sometimes as an ornamental in a wide range of environments. This publication gives general information about Colocasia esculenta and some basic data on related root crop species. It deals with taxonomy, botany, origin and distribution, genetic resources, reproductive biology and problems associated with genetics and breeding. The final goal is to help to revitalize agricultural production, not only of taro, but also of other aroid root crop species.

The relationships between language variation and social structure within an urban community are far too complex to be adequately handled by traditional methods. The Tyneside Linguistic Survey offers a radical approach to sociolinguistic modelling, using multi-variate techniques. Linguistic and social "clusters" are discovered within a sample of Tyneside speakers by generating classifications based on a wide range of linguistic and social variables. This book provides an accessible introduction to the fundamentals of civil and military aircraft design.
Giving a largely descriptive overview of all aspects of the design process, this well-illustrated account provides an insight into the requirements of each specialist in an aircraft design team. Epilepsy: the invisible pain
They say life is a long stretch of a calm river, but not for everyone ! She was for me until the day when everything rocked, the day my destiny was changed dramatically. People do not realize how life can be so sweet and so beautiful. They complain all day long for trivialities. They are not even aware that they have before their eyes the most beautiful wealth : the luck and happiness of living in good health. I was rich before. Now I am poor because my child has an incurable disease, that has currently no hope of being healed. As a parent, how can we accept that ? , How to continue living carrying the bundle of pain in my head ? , How to overcome this feeling of helplessness ? When I started speaking to my heart, I didn't know myself that this was the beginning of a new life : a rebirth as a poet. When I learnt that my 7-year-old daughter was suffering from the Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy, this was like an earthquake in my life. Then, I needed to write in order to express my sorrow and my pain. Words and rhymes came naturally to my mind. This was obvious that poetry would be my survival weapon.

Sociolinguistic reflexes of dialect interference in West Wirral
Studies of the phonology of urban language varieties in the Labovian vein have generally concentrated on structural and statistical differentiation along the "standard"-"non-standard" dimension. In this work the author reports the results of an attempt to apply the relevant methodology and theory to a more complex situation involving the encroachment of an extraneous vernacular on a formerly rural area in England where prestige standard forms are also well represented. The dialectological findings are described in some detail, and innovatory perspectives on various methodological and theoretical issues are developed.

Educational Alternatives and the Determination of Earnings in Brazilian Industry
The major objective of the study reported in this book was to determine the effects of alternative forms of education on the earnings distribution of factory workers employed in an industrializing area. The data were collected from life-history interviews conducted in northeastern Brazil and were analyzed using a variety of statistical approaches, including path-analytic techniques. The findings provide a basis for better understanding education/labor market relationships and for using education (both in-school and extra-school) as an effective instrument for individual and societal development.

" La Tchétchénie, c'est comme 1937, 1938 ", me déclare dans son petit bureau moscovite un des dirigeants de Memorial, la plus grande association russe des Droits de l'homme. " On achève un vaste programme de construction, les gens reçoivent des logements, il y a des parcs où les enfants jouent, des spectacles, des concerts, tout a l'air normal et... la nuit, des gens disparaissent." C'est ce même homme qui m'a décrit la " tchétchénisation ", nom donné à la décision prise par Vladimir Poutine en 2002 d'installer un pouvoir tchétchène prorusse fort, principalement composé d'anciens rebelles, dirigé par l'ex-mufti indépendantiste Akhmad- Khadzhi Kadyrov, comme le " transfert du pouvoir de mener des violences illégales des structures fédérales aux structures locales". Et il était d'accord que cette " tchétchénisation " avait entraîné un réel changement : "Les violences ne sont pas moins cruelles, mais elles sont plus sélectives."

Alors que le demi-frère d'Hanaé est criblé de dettes, il se doit de trouver une solution rapidement pour les éponger, donc, pour lui, le seul moyen est de vendre Hanaé. La jeune femme va être emmenée pour être vendue à un richissime homme d'affaires. Celui-ci ne sera pas tendre avec elle, mille et une tortures lui seront infligées. Restera-t-elle suffisamment forte pour arriver à survivre à ces tortures ? Verra-t-elle la lumière au bout du tunnel ? Si vous êtes une âme sensible, passez votre chemin, ce livre n'est pas pour vous.

Ce texte porte un éclairage différent de celui de la presse occidentale sur ce qui s'est passé en Egypte de janvier 2011 à juin 2013. Analyses et reportages que je considère comme biaisés, tronqués et ne reflétant ni la réalité des faits eux-mêmes, ni la profondeur politique qu'ils signifient. On lit, on entend, on donne à voir que la culture démocratique des Egyptiens balbutie alors même que la jeunesse du pays orchestre un spectacle grandiose et démocratie. Le peuple avait porté un Président au pouvoir. Le Président s'est montré incompétent et dangereux. Ce même peuple exprime sa volonté de destituer le Président et délègue aux militaires le pouvoir de négocier sa destitution. Tel est le résumé de mon histoire. Trente-trois millions d'actes de rébellion ont été signés pour réclamer le départ du Président, trente trois millions de rebelles ont envahi les rues, les ponts du Caire et des autres villes du pays. Même si le mot rébellion, Tamarrod, est rarement prononcé. L'histoire que je raconte ici n'échappera pas à la terreur et à la contre-révolution. Cependant, de l'avoir vécue, il en restera une culture populaire de la Résistance qui ne s'effacera pas de la mémoire collective. Tamarrod a prêté son nom à un parti qui contribuera à la rédaction d'une nouvelle Constitution.

Parfois, des fumées m'empêchaient de distinguer qui attaquait qui. Nous apprendrions plus tard qu'il s'agissait de gaz lacrymogènes. Le téléphone sonna. La gauche a-t-elle encore un avenir ? Pour Pierre Moscovici, compagnon et ami de Lionel Jospin, incarnation d'une génération socialiste touchée au cœur par le 21 avril, la question est décisive. Un an après, à l'heure où le monde et l'Europe sont dans la tourmente, savoir y répondre est la condition indispensable pour continuer à agir, à penser, à militer, et à espérer. Voici donc son témoignage précis sur le parcours de déroute de Jospin et des siens, écrit " par un acteur évidemment subjectif, proche mais sans esprit de cour, sans dénigrement ni flatterie ". Il fait la genèse du jospinisme et rend hommage à une action qui restera dans l'histoire de la gauche. Il raconte, de l'intérieur, comment la volonté réformatrice des débuts s'essouffla, et comment l'aggiornamento de la gauche resta inachevé ; comment la gauche plurielle devint un cartel d'ambitions antagonistes ; comment un Premier ministre imprégné de ses convictions démocratiques tomba dans le piège de la Ve république. Il étudie minutieusement cette victoire trop annoncée devenue défaite ; l'absence à lui-même d'un homme, Jospin, qu'on croyait en acier trempé ; l'atonie de l'entourage, l'angoisse de la solitude, le choc du départ. Il fait surtout des propositions pour demain. Pierre Moscovici ne se dérobe pas aux questions qui taraudent la gauche. Il défie ceux qui font le procès hâtif d'une " trahison du socialisme " d'où serait né tout le mal. Il défend la fidélité, la réforme, la patience et l'Europe - toutes valeurs peu en cour quand le désarroi fait le lit des démagogues.

Marseille dans mille ans, ça va ressembler à quoi ?
