«Phädon», or «On the Immortality of the Soul»
This is the first modern translation of Moses Mendelssohn's classic work of 1767, the Phädon. It includes Mendelssohn's own introduction and appendix, as well as footnotes and explanatory introduction by David Shavin. (Charles Cullen's translation of 1789 is the only other extant translation.) The "modern Socrates" of the German classical period, Mendelssohn has created a beautiful translation and elaboration of Plato's Phädo led to a revolution in thought, and a subsequent renaissance in Germany. The debt of the German classical period to ancient Greece is embodied in Mendelssohn's Phädon, as is the promise of the American Revolution. The translation and accompanying notes recapture Mendelssohn's unique marriage of depth of thought and breadth of appeal.

Thinking about Physics
Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Too often, though, he believes, physicists haven't subjected their assumptions to thorough scrutiny. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood.
"Surely physics is more than a collection of experimental results, assembled to satisfy the curiosity of appreciative experts," Newton writes. Physics, according to Newton, has moved beyond the describing and naming of curious phenomena, which is the goal of some other branches of science. Physicists have spent a great part of the twentieth century searching for explanations of experimental findings. Newton agrees that experimental facts are vital to the study of physics, but only because they lead to the development of a theory that can explain them. Facts, he argues, should undergird theory.
Newton's explanatory sweep is both broad and deep. He covers such topics as quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, field theory, thermodynamics, the role of mathematics in physics, and the concepts of probability and causality. For Newton the fundamental entity in quantum theory is the field, from which physicists can explain the particle-like and wave-like properties that are observed in experiments. He grounds his explanations in the quantum field.
Although this is not designed as a standalone textbook, it is essential reading for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and researchers. This is a clear, concise, up-to-date book about the concepts and theories that underlie the study of contemporary physics. Readers will find that they will become better-informed physicists and, therefore, better thinkers and problem solvers, too.

The two little girls never knew. Wounded, they decided that it was because their mother found them negligible. The ill wind that blows nobody any good swept away the vicarage family on its blast. Then lo and behold ! the vicar, who was somewhat distinguished as an essayist and a controversialist, and whose case had aroused sympathy among the bookish men, received the living of Papplewick. Le jasmin dans la savane
Ce récit peint la vie de quelques familles d'émigrants du Moyen-Orient oubliés de l'histoire. Quittant leur pays au début du XXe siècle pour les quatre coins du monde, le destin les fera se retrouver au Sénégal. Partis pauvres de chez eux, ils deviendront des rouages importants de l'économie coloniale. Robert Saad réussit le tour de force de croiser, d'une manière particulièrement vivante, les destins de personnages hauts en couleur mêlés aux événements qui ont changé la face du monde : Moyen-Orient post-Ottoman, Cuba, indépendances des anciennes colonies, mouvements sociaux et bouleversements internationaux. Il est intéressant de remarquer que ses prédictions sur l'Occident datant de 2001 font aujourd'hui l'actualité. Sur fond de mysticisme, ce livre est une véritable chanson d'amour de l'Afrique — en particulier le Sénégal —, par des gens venus d'ailleurs et qui ont fait pousser le "jasmin dans la savane".

Aidé par ses amis Hassan amenfi et Ali Aghrib, des professeurs émérites, Mourad Bensaadi, un jeune universitaire plein d'ambition, entreprend la mise sur pied d'un important projet agricole, moderne et parfaitement adapté à la mise en valeur des zones arides jusque-là abandonnées et stériles. En proposant un substitut à l'économie de la rente uniquement basée sur l'exportation de " l'huile de pierre " (pétrole), ces scientifiques téméraires vont s'attirer les foudres des tenants du pouvoir. On a touché à certains intérêts. Dès lors, Mourad et ses amis se retrouvent piégés et pris en tenaille entre un intégrisme religieux aveugle et une terreur manigancée par des esprits diaboliques et puissants. La menace est si grande que les trois universitaires sont traqués et ne trouvent que l'exil pour salut.

Deux touristes français, Max et Regina, traversent le Sahara Occidental. Ils veulent marcher sur les traces de Théodore Monod au Pays de la Grande Solitude, dans le désert mauritanien. A Nouakchott Sidi et Jemal, deux djihadistes, sont investis d'une mission : prendre des Français en otage. Ahmedou se rend à Atar, il marche depuis cinq jours et cinq nuits. C'est un esclave, son maître Mahfoud refuse de lui donner Leghdeiva comme épouse. A l'ombre du jasmin
Un jour d'automne, Ahmed Kalouaz rend visite à sa mère, cette étoile aux cheveux noirs dont il a magistralement dressé le portrait dans son précédent récit. Lors d'une conversation, elle ouvre leur livret de famille et, pour la première fois, l'écrivain voit inscrit sur ces feuillets jaunis le nom d'une soeur disparue avant sa propre naissance. Elle s'appelait Mimouna. D'elle, la mémoire familiale n'a rien conservé. Aucune photo. On ne sait pas même de quoi elle est brutalement morte, à l'âge de quatre ans, dans ce village-carton misérable où la famille vivait dans les années 1950, en Algérie. Remontant le temps perdu, Ahmed Kalouaz va redonner vie à cette soeur oubliée. Elle était belle comme un diamant, se souvient sa mère, et sa disparition la brisa de chagrin.

The Undergrowth of Science. Delusion, self-deception and human frailty
Walter Gratzer's themes in the stories he relates in The Undergrowth of Science are collective delusion and human folly. Science is generally seen as a process bound by rigorous rules, which its practitioners must not transgress. Deliberate fraud occasionally intrudes, but it is soon detected, the perpetrators cast out and the course of discovery barely disturbed. Far more interesting are the outbreaks of self-delusion that from time to time afflict upright and competent researchers, and then spread like an epidemic or mass-hysteria through a sober and respectable scientific community. When this happens the rules by which scientists normally govern their working lives are suddenly suspended. Sometimes these episodes are provoked by personal vanity, an unwillingness to acknowledge error or even contemplate the possibility that a hard-won success is a will o' the wisp; at other times they stem from loyalty to a respected and trusted guru, or even from patriotic pride; and, worst of ail, they may be a consequence of a political ideology which imposes its own interpretation on scientists' observations of the natural world. Unreason and credulity supervene, illusory phenomena are described and measured, and theories are developed to explain them - until suddenly, often for no single reason, the bubble bursts, leaving behind it a residue of acrimony, recrimination, embarrassment and ruined reputations.
Here, then, are radiations, measured with high precision yet existing only in the minds of those who observed them; the Russian water, which some thought might congeal the oceans: phantom diseases which called for heroic surgery; monkey testis implants that restored the sexual powers of ageing roués and of tired sheep; truths about genetics and about the nature of matter, perceptible only to Aryan scientists in the Third Reich or Marxist ideologues in the Soviet Union; and much more. The Undergrowth of Science explores, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the history of such episodes, up to our own time, in ail their absurdity, tragedy and pathos.

Epilepsy: the invisible pain
They say life is a long stretch of a calm river, but not for everyone ! She was for me until the day when everything rocked, the day my destiny was changed dramatically. People do not realize how life can be so sweet and so beautiful. They complain all day long for trivialities. They are not even aware that they have before their eyes the most beautiful wealth : the luck and happiness of living in good health. I was rich before. Now I am poor because my child has an incurable disease, that has currently no hope of being healed. As a parent, how can we accept that ? , How to continue living carrying the bundle of pain in my head ? , How to overcome this feeling of helplessness ? When I started speaking to my heart, I didn't know myself that this was the beginning of a new life : a rebirth as a poet. When I learnt that my 7-year-old daughter was suffering from the Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy, this was like an earthquake in my life. Then, I needed to write in order to express my sorrow and my pain. Words and rhymes came naturally to my mind. This was obvious that poetry would be my survival weapon.

West African Bronze Masterworks. The Syrop Collection, Edition bilingue français-anglais
Le volume qui présente la collection de bronzes d'Afrique occidentale d'Arnold Syrop possède toutes les qualités pour marquer une étape capitale dans le domaine des arts africains. Longtemps attendu par les collectionneurs, les spécialistes et les amoureux de l'art, l'ouvrage réunit les oeuvres en bronze, inédites pour la plupart, qui ont retenu le regard passionné, attentif et infatigable de Syrop au fil de quatre décennies. Italian Maiolica and Other Early Modern Ceramics in the Courtauld Gallery
This is the first catalogue of the collection of early modern ceramics in the Courtauld. The pieces in the collection showcase brilliantly the skill of potters and pottery painters working at the time of Raphael and Titian. Maiolica is one of the most revealing expressions of Renaissance art. Its extraordinary range of colours retain the vividness that they had when they left the potter's kiln. Italian potters absorbed techniques and shapes from the Islamic world and incorporated ornament and subject matter from the arts of ancient Rome. This new approach to pottery making, combined with the invention of printing, woodcut and engraving, resulted in an extraordinary type of painted pottery, praised by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists for 'surpassing the ancient with its brilliance of glaze and variety of painting'. The collection boasts a magnificent group of vessels made during the high Renaissance, the golden age of Italian maiolica. It includes precious and delicate Deruta lustreware with imagery deriving from Perugino and Raphael, as well as vessels painted in a narrative style of pottery painting known as istoriato. Highlights include vessels depicting episodes taken from the first printed Bibles of the Renaissance. Istoriato maiolica flourished particularly in the lands of the Dukes of Urbino, who promoted this craft by sending painted pottery to prestigious patrons across Europe. Emblems and devices painted on the pottery help us understand that they were meant to be used and enjoyed by the elites in Renaissance society, such as the Medici and other great Tuscan families. The catalogue will include two recent gifts to the Courtauld, a rare tile of the famous patroness of the arts Marchioness Isabella D'Este, and a refined dish painted with the story of Diana and Actaeon. All major Renaissance pottery centres are represented in the collection, including Siena, Faenza and Venice, as well as splendid examples of the mysterious pharmacy jars made at the foot of the mountain of Gran Sasso in the town of Castelli d'Abruzzo. These achievements of the art of pottery in the early modern period are completed by fine examples of Ottoman pottery, as well as examples of Valencian lustreware. Sani's introductory essay on the Victorian collector Thomas Gambier Parry will shed new light on the development of this fascinating collection, making links between Gambier Parry's artistic practice and his collecting and revealing new insights into his taste as a collector. Each detailed entry uncovers a wealth of new information on the provenance of the pieces.

Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940), hitherto consigned to a footnote in musical history as Stravinsky's piano teacher, is undergoing rediscovery. A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Balakirev and Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920. Songs of Love was first published in 1904. No evidence survives of any public performance in Kashperova's lifetime although it is very likely that they were performed at her regular 'musical evenings at home on Tuesdays' mentioned in her Memoirs. The transparency of the piano writing strongly suggests that she would accompany herself singing. Kashperova, by all accounts, possessed a fine voice, and in the summer of 1906 she decided 'to learn from the artistry', as she put it, of the tenor Raimond von Zur-Mühlen who was widely celebrated for having developed (with Clara Schumann) the Lieder-Abend tradition. His summer-schools on the Baltic coast were frequented by aspiring singers from all over Europe, even Japan and India. Kashperova herself was responsible for the poetic lyrics of Songs of Love (in both Russian and German), which may well have emerged from her own bittersweet experience of life and love ; she was not to marry until 1916 at the age of forty-four. That Kashperova is the author of both the music and the lyrics of Songs of Love would suggest that they express very personal sentiments. Instrumentation : soprano (tenor) and piano

Basé sur les parcours de l'arrière grand-père de Kamel Mouellef et de son arrière grand-oncle, Turcos nous raconte tout d'abord une histoire d'hommes, des poilus qui ont combattu dans les tranchées, loin de chez eux, pour une Mère Patrie que la plupart ne connaissaient pas avant d'arriver sur le sol de France. A travers ces deux soldats, sont évoqués le rôle et la place des combattants indigènes dans l'armée française avec l'idée de montrer et surtout de raconter des histoires personnelles (exclusivement fictives) sur un arrière-plan réel et historique, celui de la Première guerre mondiale, le tout préfacé par Yasmina Khadra et scénarisé par Tarek (Sir Arthur Berton).

In our age, there is the need for traditional wisdoms to retain their validity and be intrinsic to our philosophic and scientific perceptions of the cosmos. We cannot do without their knowledge, their spiritual perspective, and their deep faith in the harmony of all nature. Ignoring these qualities has profound environmental implications. Global warming, environmental pollution, and the exhaustion of nature's resources are but a few of the symptoms of the nature's experiences as we continue to mistreat it in order to satisfy our own ends. This work helps us to realise that wherever we are, we are a part of nature. All the things around us are as presences, representing forces and powers of life that are not ours and yet are all part of us. Then we find them reflecting in ourselves, because we are nature, though not identical with it.

Notre objectif principal c'est que l'enfant soit autonome et libre de feuilleter son livre et d'enclencher les comptines qui lui feraient plaisir. Nous nous inscrivons dans une dynamique de pérennisation et de fluidification de la transmission. Nous avons décidé d'associer l'oral à un support physique afin que la boucle soit complète. Nous tenions à transmettre un support qui pourrait avoir plusieurs degrés de lecture et se vivre en famille. Sur la forme, les comptines, les berceuses et les illustrations permettent à chacun d'entrer par la porte qui lui convient le mieux. Les thèmes abordés dans les comptines sont divers et variés et sont le prétexte pour transmettre, valoriser, inculquer, des valeurs de vie à la fois originelles, d'actualité et universelles. Nous avons choisi de commencer par l'enfance car c'est à cet âge que l'on apprend les bases, les rudiments, que l'on grave les premiers vrais souvenirs, c'est à cet âge que l'on ouvre son esprit à la diversité et que l'on rêve en toute innocence. Les comptines et berceuses se transmettent au fil des générations, de ce fait elles s'éffritent un peu au fil de la transmission. Un mot peut être remplacé par un autre, un contexte peut différer en fonction de la zone géographique. Soyez donc indulgents l'esprit est là vivons le . Burmese Silver from the Colonial Period
This stunning catalogue presents an exceptional collection of rare Burmese silver. Accompanied by detailed photographs and explanatory texts, this ground-breaking book proposes a new way of looking at Burmese silver. Names, dates, places, and stories - identifying the who, when, where, and what of Burmese silver has been the focus of publications on the topic. Are these questions the best way to understand silver, however ? Alexandra Green argues that they are not. Too few pieces provide reliable information about silversmiths, production locations, and dates to allow for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Instead, a close examination of silver patterns reveals strong links with Burmese art history reaching as far back as the Bagan period (11th to 13th centuries), connections with contemporary artistic trends, and participation within the wider world of silversmithing. The first European to write about Burmese silver was H L Tilly, a colonial official from the late 19th into the early 20th century. Tasked with collecting objects for various fairs and exhibitions, he took an interest in Burmese art, publishing articles and books from the 1880s onwards. While much of what he wrote was factually inaccurate and coloured by the prejudices and stereotypes common at the time, his two volumes on Burmese silver published in 1902 and 1904 contain pictures of pieces from the early to mid 19th century. These enable a reconstruction of how silver designs evolved as the country was absorbed into the Indian Raj, and British and other Westerners became consumers of local silver products. Tilly was also correct in his interest in silver designs. Green uses the visual information from his books to describe the continuities and innovations of designs found on silver from the mid 19th through the mid 20th century, and she places these trends within local, regional, and global flows of ideas. Many studies of Burmese silver have been plagued by a lack of understanding of the Burmese context. In contrast, Green examines silver from a local perspective, drawing on Burmese texts and information that allows for a nuanced view of the motifs, designs, and patterns that appear repetitively on silver pieces. Using Graham Honeybill's collection, formed over many years, as a basis, she explores how designs and patterns circulated around the country and were innovatively combined and recombined on pieces by silversmiths producing objects for Burmese, Western, and commercial clients.

From scribble to cartoon. Drawings from Bruegel to Rubens
In this exhibition, the Museum Plantin-Moretus shows the 80 most beautiful old master drawings from Flemish collections. From scribble to cartoon : Drawings from Bruegel to Rubens in Flemish Collections (Van Crabbelinge tot Carton : Tekeningen van Bruegel tot Rubens in Vlaamse Collecties) gives an astonishing and representative overview of the art of drawing in our regions in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 2020, the Flemish government placed a large number of old master drawings on their masterpiece list, including rare artworks by Frans Floris, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony Van Dyck, Jacques Jordaens, Otto van Veen, Jan Fijt and many more. The majority of these masterpieces are kept in the Museum Plantin-Moretus. The museum takes the official recognition of these drawings as masterpieces as an opportunity to put its unique collection in the spotlight. The exhibition presents an overview that illustrates who, why and how people drew in our regions in the 16th and 17th centuries
