Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin (7 décembre 1805 à Blois - 13 juin 1871 à Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt), est le plus célèbre illusionniste français du XIXe siècle. "Rénovateur de l'art magique" , considéré comme le plus grand magicien de tous les temps, inventeur du spectacle d'illusionnisme, il est également scientifique et homme de lettres, s'intéressant à tout ce qui touche aux sciences. ? Il dépose ainsi de nombreux brevets. On lui doit les appareils permettant de mesurer les "touches" des escrimeurs, le taximètre, des appareils électromécaniques de contrôle à distance, certains instruments d'ophtalmologie. Il dépose plusieurs brevets d'inventions et est le premier à perfectionner l'ampoule électrique à incandescence. Robert-Houdin ouvre un théâtre de magie à Paris et le 3 juillet 1845 a lieu la première des "Soirées fantastiques de Robert-Houdin" , rue de Valois, au Palais-Royal. C'est le succès immédiat. Il y présente des automates magiques comme L'Oranger Merveilleux, Le Pâtissier du Palais-Royal, ou Le Voltigeur au Trapèze et des expériences inédites comme La Bouteille inépuisable ou La Suspension éthéréenne dont la conception et l'exécution envoient aux oubliettes le répertoire désormais désuet de ses prédécesseurs. En quelques années Robert-Houdin fait fortune. En 1856, à la demande du gouvernement français, il se rend en Algérie pour y donner un spectacle de magie, afin de diminuer l'influence néfaste qu'avaient les marabouts sur les tribus arabes. Il fit une impression si fantastique, que les chefs de tribus se présentèrent à lui, avec un parchemin et la promesse de garder leur loyauté à la France.

From the village to presidential suite, my life journey
I did not intend to write a scholarly book, for I did not want to intellectualize my life. Nor did I wish to romanticize it. I wanted to describe it as I lived it, with emphasis on people. I wanted to express in this book the joy I experienced in giving generously of myself, my time, and my modest material possessions, to make others happy and to share the many gifts of life. I wanted also to share with those who aspire to become academic leaders the myriad lessons my upbringing, education, and professional life have taught me. I thought they might find these lessons learned useful, as they strive for successful careers and, more importantly, for rewarding personal and professional lives. Again, this book is a story, the story of my life, wherein the personal and the professional have intermingled and strengthened each other, making a better whole of my person, personality, aspirations, and talents. This unique alliance between the professional and the personal dimensions of my life, I am happy to say, always triumphed and accounted for the successes that so many good people helped me achieve. Without the guidance, advice, cooperation, and support of others, I am sure my life would not have been as fulfilling.

Epilepsy: the invisible pain
They say life is a long stretch of a calm river, but not for everyone ! She was for me until the day when everything rocked, the day my destiny was changed dramatically. People do not realize how life can be so sweet and so beautiful. They complain all day long for trivialities. They are not even aware that they have before their eyes the most beautiful wealth : the luck and happiness of living in good health. I was rich before. Now I am poor because my child has an incurable disease, that has currently no hope of being healed. As a parent, how can we accept that ? , How to continue living carrying the bundle of pain in my head ? , How to overcome this feeling of helplessness ? When I started speaking to my heart, I didn't know myself that this was the beginning of a new life : a rebirth as a poet. When I learnt that my 7-year-old daughter was suffering from the Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy, this was like an earthquake in my life. Then, I needed to write in order to express my sorrow and my pain. Words and rhymes came naturally to my mind. This was obvious that poetry would be my survival weapon.

A travers tout cet ensemble des témoignages provenant d'ici-bas et de l'autre côté du voile, ''Merci : Révélations'' apporte sa contribution à la recherche scientifique qui va démontrer la réalité de la survie. She’s Leaving Home
This collection of essays, written by scholars from all over Europe, explores the cultural meanings of women leaving home. Although all the chapters analyse writings in English, the volume aims to put the narrative element of home-leaving into a European context by investigating travel in various directions : from England to somewhere abroad, from the (former) colonies to the (former) imperial centre or simply within a psychic space. The female figures discussed in the volume leave home for various reasons – to go into exile, to challenge orthodox conceptions of femininity, to travel for pleasure or out of curiosity – but ultimately each of them has to face questions of the definitions of home, belonging and otherness. Consequently, the essays in this collection focus on how the cross-cultural encounters implicated in discourses of race, gender, nation and religion affect female identity. The ‘protagonists' of these narratives range from mythical heroines to early modern Protestant refugees to fictitious and historical figures from the past 200 years. The discussion throughout is informed by contemporary theories of gender, literary and cultural studies.

This work helps us to realise that wherever we are, we are a part of nature. All the things around us are as presences, representing forces and powers of life that are not ours and yet are all part of us. Then we find them reflecting in ourselves, because we are nature, though not identical with it.

The Second Story of Creation (Gen 2:4-3:24)
The two creation stories in Genesis 1-3 have been subject of intense study since the beginning of critical research on the Pentateuch in the eighteenth century. Even today, they continue to vex the biblical commentators. This work attempts to study one of these creation stories, namely the Eden Story narrated in Gen 2 : 4-3 : 24. This story graphically describes the first couple's installation in the Garden of Eden and their expulsion from it. These two themes have prompted some scholars to consider this story as a summary of Israel's history until the tragedy of exile and a prologue to the literary composition commonly called Enneateuch (Genesis - 2 Kings). Such a hypothesis is based on the premise that both Eden story and Israel's history have the same end : expulsion. The reason for such an end in both is disobedience. The study takes up this hypothesis and examines its viability. Furthermore, this work attempts to bring out the biblical message of this story. Gen 2-3 is an expression of Israel's faith resulting from its history with Yahweh and from its encounter with the surrounding cultures, and it intends to articulate a religious and anthropological identity for Israel.

Labyrinth of Hybridities. Avatars of O’Neillian Realism in Multi-ethnic American Drama (1972-2003)
Taking its cue from Eugene O'Neill's questioning of "faithful realism", voiced by Edmund Tyrone in Long Day's Journey into Night, this book examines the distant legacy of the Irish American playwright in contemporary multiethnic drama in the U.S. It explores the labyrinth of formal devices through which African American, Latina/o, First Nations, and Asian American dramatists have unconsciously reinterpreted O'Neill's questioning of mimesis. In their works, hybridizations of stage realism function as aesthetic celebrations of the spiritual potentialities of cultural in-betweenness. This volume provides detailed analyses of over forty plays authored by such key artists as August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks, José Rivera, Cherríe Moraga, Hanay Geiogamah, Diane Glancy, David Henry Hwang, and Chay Yew, to give only a few prominent examples. All in all, Labyrinth of Hybridities invites its readers to reassess the cross-cultural patterns characterizing the history of twentieth century American drama.

Europe's Role in a South African Methodology
This work consists of essays on the so-called Middle Ages, seen from two perspectives. Writing from a sideline perspective, as opposed to the perspectives of historically mainstream theologies, in the first part of the book the author proposes a method for reading religious political texts with European philosophical insights but with a relevance for South Africa. This is done by comparing so-called Medieval texts with South African texts and situations within the demands of liberation, contextualisation, and communalism.In the second part of the book, from a female perspective, the author reevaluates the post-Biblical history of Christianity, criticising the terms "Patristics" and "Middle Ages". A South African women's theology is then offered as the outcome of the sideline perspective on the Bible, history and theology discussed in this book.

Local and Inter-Regional Traditions in Shipbuilding Proceedings of the Fifteenth International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology Marseilles 2018 Twenty-four years after the seventh ISBSA was held on the island of Tatihou, it became the turn of Marseille on the Mediterranean coast of France to have the honour of hosting the fifteenth International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology (ISBSA 15), which brought together, from 22 to 27 October 2018, some 300 scholars, PhD and post-doctoral researchers, and students from 36 countries belonging to almost 130 research bodies. The conference was organised by the Centre Camille Jullian - UMR 7299, which, on the occasion of ISBSA 15, celebrated 50 years of activity in the field of nautical archaeology. This volume includes 60 contributions from 93 authors covering different nautical areas (the Mediterranean, North Sea, Baltic, Atlantic, Pacific and South China Sea) from prehistory to the modern era. The papers are organised around a number of different themes, the principal being "Open Sea, Closed Sea : Local and Inter-Regional Traditions in Shipbuilding'. The intention is to reveal interactions between local and inter-regional traditions of open and enclosed waters through examples taken from nautical areas as varied and representative as possible. Traditions locales et interrégionales dans la construction navale Actes du Quinzième Colloque international d'archéologie navale Marseille 2018 Vingt-quatre ans après le septième ISBSA, tenu en 1994 à l'île Tatihou, la façade méditerranéenne de la France a été mise à l'honneur en recevant à Marseille la quinzième édition de l'International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology (ISBSA 15), qui a réuni du 22 au 27 octobre 2018 près de trois cents chercheurs, jeunes chercheurs (post-doctorants et doctorants) et étudiants, provenant de 36 pays et appartenant à près de 130 organismes de recherche. Le colloque a été organisé par le Centre Camille Jullian qui, à cette occasion, a fêté ses 50 ans de recherche dans le domaine de l'archéologie navale. Le volume regroupe soixante contributions de quatre-vingt-treize auteurs portant sur différents espaces nautiques (Méditerranée, mer du Nord, Baltique, Atlantique, Pacifique, mer de Chine), de la Préhistoire à l'époque moderne. Ces actes sont organisés autour de différents thèmes : le principal d'entre eux s'intéresse aux interactions entre traditions locales et traditions interrégionales, mers ouvertes et mers fermées, mises en évidence à travers des exemples pris dans des régions aussi variées et représentatives que possible.
