Each Child Is My Only One
In Each Child Is My Only One : Lotte Carlebach-Preuss, the Portrait of a Mother and Rabbi's Wife, Miriam Gillis-Carlebach, the daughter of Rabbi Dr. Joseph Zvi Carlebach (1883–1942), last Chief Rabbi of Hamburg and its surroundings, describes her childhood in the lively household of a rabbi's family with nine children, focusing on the special personality of her mother, Lotte Carlebach, née Preuss (1900–1942). The book starts with the history of the Preuss family, goes on to describe the marriage of Lotte to Joseph Carlebach, and portrays in detail their dynamic family life – until their deportation with their four youngest children to a Latvian concentration camp in 1942. The book is composed of two main parts. In the first section the reader learns about the events up to 1938, both inside and outside the Carlebach home ; the second section covers the years 1938–1941, in which there was a lively correspondence mainly between the mother and those of her children who succeeded in emigrating from Nazi Germany. This part concludes with several testimonies portraying the special personalities of Rabbi Carlebach and his wife and their devotion to the unfortunate who benefited from their unbounded assistance and altruism during the Holocaust. Many photographs are included in the book, several of them taken by Lotte Carlebach herself. The book is a unique and personal testimony about Jewish life in Germany during the years of persecution that relentlessly led to the conflagration of the Holocaust.

This book examines the theological epistemologies of two of this century's most prominent theologians, Hans Urs von Balthasar and Karl Barth. Both theologians responded to modernist theologies by drawing from the best of their own traditions. Most of the papers on social dilemmas were presented at a conference on social dilemmas that was held at the University of Groningen in the spring of 1984. Social dilemmas are interpersonal situations that are characterized by a conflict between private and collective interest, i.e. in attempting to further their private interests, participants may end up worser off than if they had abandonned self-interest and worked for the good of the community. The chapters in this book describe efforts made by social psychologists, sociologists, and political scientists to advance our understanding of the psychological processes that influence people's behavior in social dilemmas. It is assumed that understanding of these processes can help our search for solutions.

CHILI. Face aux menaces de Zeus, les sorcières ont plus que jamais besoin de trouver la baguette de Circé. Mais l'artefact est caché quelque part sur l'île d'Aiaia, la résidence première des sorcières, perdue depuis des centaines d'années. Ce serait leur arme la plus puissante si un conflit venait à éclater. Les sorcières ont misé tous leurs espoirs sur Méroé. Malheureusement pour la jeune sorcière qui remue ciel et terre, l'île reste introuvable. Et du côté de sa vie sentimentale, ce n'est pas mieux. Elle voit ses deux soeurs tomber amoureuses en se demandant pourquoi ce sentiment lui échappe. Mais ses recherches sont mises à mal lorsque Méroé se fait enlever par Zeus puis jeter sans ménagement dans les immenses forges d'Héphaïstos, le dieu du feu et des métaux. Bourru et asocial, Héphaïstos ne veut pas de cette cohabitation forcée, qui contrecarre ses plans. Quant à Méroé, bien que troublée, elle est déterminée à s'enfuir. Mais rester aux côtés de ce dieu imposant aux yeux ambrés pourrait bien être la solution à tous ses problèmes...

William Turner. Sun is God
2023Reconnu comme le plus grand paysagiste de la période romantique en raison de sa maîtrise de la lumière, de la couleur et de l'atmosphère, Turner, né en 1775 à Londres, signe ses premiers dessins, surtout des copies d'après d'autres artistes, à l'âge de 12 ans. Admis à l'école de la Royal Academy en 1789, il suit d'abord les cours d'après l'antique puis ceux d'après le modèle vivant jusqu'en 1793 et cette même année, il reçoit un prix de la Royal Society of Arts pour le dessin et le paysage. Il voyage en Grande-Bretagne, en France, en Suisse : ses nombreux déplacements contribuent largement à son inspiration. Turner rencontre rapidement le succès, surtout grâce à l'aquarelle, première technique, dans laquelle il s'exprime et qui permet d'affirmer en un instant la trace d'un rayon de soleil ou d'un orage. Sa virtuosité se voit couronner par son élection comme membre à part entière de la Royal Academy en 1802. "Sun is God" Avant sa mort, Turner aurait déclaré : "Sun is God" . En effet l'astre du jour occupe une place prépondérante dans son oeuvre. Il le considère comme un "motif joyeux... le plus beau des êtres" . Certains critiques interprètent le soleil de Turner comme un autoportrait ! Cette section avec cinq peintures à l'huile peut être considérée comme le joyau de l'exposition. Child and Nation. A Study of Political Socialisation and Banal Nationalism in France and England
Where do feelings of national belonging come from ? Why is it that this belonging often seems both fundamental and banal, both intangible and omnipresent ? This book argues that the answers to these questions lie in childhood and the socialisation to the nation that we experience as children. It suggests that the banality of our own everyday nationalism is due to the fact that we have spent our lives learning to take it for granted. Just as our first understandings of reality are learned during childhood socialisation, so nationhood and national belonging are internalised as natural and necessary from the very beginning of our lives. The specific nature of this early socialisation is what confers upon banal nationalism its characteristic combination of omnipresence, inscrutability and self-evidence. To try and get around this self-evidence and explore this socialisation and its results, this study has adopted an innovative methodology involving semi-directive projective interviews with young children in France and England. This book presents an analysis of how this early socialisation to the nation plays out on young children's visions of national belonging and its justifications and implications. It also looks at what this transmission in childhood means for nationalism as an ideology and the power and pertinence of the nation today.

The Dramatic Encounter of Divine and Human Freedom in the Theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar
This book surveys the major theological writings of Hans Urs von Balthasar from the perspective of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom. The first part examines Balthasar's early treatment of the question in the context of the analogy of being. The second part concentrates on his more mature work, the Theological Dramatics, with its understanding of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom in terms of a 'dramatic encounter' in which, controversially, human freedom is thought to actively participate in an ever-greater exchange of love in God. But this book is more than a survey. Observing the persistence of the 'analogy of proportionality' within the Dramatics leads the author in the third part to a critique of Balthasar's thought. It is argued that the continuation of the earlier perspective explains Balthasar's emphasis on the freedom of the individual to the neglect of social structures and their transformation. While the 'historical' as such is not neglected, as some claim it is, the focus is on the history of the individual and his or her relationship with God. It is therefore contended that Balthasar's theology of the Trinity is more concerned with 'interpersonal' relationships than truly 'social' ones and that this is what inhibits a fruitful dialogue with social theologies.

Epilepsy: the invisible pain
They say life is a long stretch of a calm river, but not for everyone ! She was for me until the day when everything rocked, the day my destiny was changed dramatically. People do not realize how life can be so sweet and so beautiful. They complain all day long for trivialities. They are not even aware that they have before their eyes the most beautiful wealth : the luck and happiness of living in good health. I was rich before. Now I am poor because my child has an incurable disease, that has currently no hope of being healed. As a parent, how can we accept that ? , How to continue living carrying the bundle of pain in my head ? , How to overcome this feeling of helplessness ? When I started speaking to my heart, I didn't know myself that this was the beginning of a new life : a rebirth as a poet. When I learnt that my 7-year-old daughter was suffering from the Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy, this was like an earthquake in my life. Then, I needed to write in order to express my sorrow and my pain. Words and rhymes came naturally to my mind. This was obvious that poetry would be my survival weapon.

Combien sont-ils ? Mille ? Dix mille ? Cent mille ? Le nombre de morts au Chili à partir du 11 septembre 1973, date du coup d'Etat dû au général Pinochet, n'est rien comparé à celui de tous ceux qui ont été persécutés, torturés, emprisonnés, exilés, appauvris, affamés... Jamais, dans l'histoire de l'Amérique latine, la haine gratuite, la férocité vindicative, la grossièreté inhumaine de type nazi ne s'étaient si clairement, si totalement exprimées. La junte des quatre généraux ayant volé le pouvoir, le processus d' "extirpation du cancer marxiste" s'est enclenché dans tous les domaines de la vie privée et publique des Chiliens. On a assassiné la personne humaine, sa culture, sa liberté de dire, d'écrire, de penser, d'étudier, de travailler, d' "être" ; on a sabré dans ses droits juridiques, écrasé les conquêtes de la classe ouvrière, pulvérisé la réforme agraire, détourné l'enseignement, piétiné la conscience sociale. Le but poursuivi : restituer les privilèges aux privilégiés. Mais ce néo-nazisme latino-américain cachait de terribles réalités. Quelles étaient ses racines, ses complices ?
