En Colombie Britannique (Canada), depuis 1969, c'est-à-dire pendant plus de 50 ans, les meurtres vont s'étaler dans le temps. Des dizaines de femmes et de filles vont disparaître, quelques unes seront retrouvées mortes, dispersées le long de ce que l'on appelle désormais "l'autoroute des larmes" . Face au déni d'une société, le rôle que Kourtney Roy accorde à la photographie est de s'attacher, malgré tout, à partager une douleur et à faire ressentir une tension qui ne peut trouver d'exutoire que dans le drame.

Tout a commencé par une enchère innocente sur eBay. Le réalisateur Lee Shulman acquit un lot de diapositives 35mm Kodachrome - des photos de famille d'anonymes - et fut si captivé par ce qu'il a appelé "la valeur émotionnelle de ces instants de vie" qu'il comprit qu'il devait en réunir davantage. En janvier 2017, il lançait The Anonymous Project. Après avoir rassemblé près de 700. 000 images données ou achetées, il est désormais résolu à collecter, préserver et cataloguer des négatifs et diapositives couleur de cette moitié du siècle. The Anonymous Project, publié ici pour la première fois, présente une anthologie choisie de près de 300 images documentant la vie de ces anonymes, des décennies avant Instagram ou Snapchat. Le résultat offre une capsule témoin intime parcourant les années 1950 à 1970, aussi vivante que ses couleurs Kodachrome. Si les sujets pris en photo sont inconnus, ces images et les histoires fascinantes qu'elles renferment nous sont universellement familières.

Activation Policies for the Unemployed, the Right to Work and the Duty to Work
Since the 1990s and the 2000s, Western social protection systems have experienced a turn towards activation. This turn consists of the multiplication of measures aimed at bringing those who are unemployed closer to participation in the labour market. These measures often induce a strengthening of the conditions that must be met in order to receive social benefits. It is in this well known context that the authors gathered in this book decided to take a closer look at the relationship between activation policies for the unemployed and the right and the duty to work. If activation measures are likely to increase transitions towards the labour market, we can also make the assumption that they may, particularly when they are marked with the seal of coercion, hinder or dramatically reduce the right to freely chosen work. In such circumstances, the realisation of the "right to work", which is often stated to be the aim of those who promote activation, tends in practice to be reduced to an increasing pressure being exerted on the unemployed. In this case, isn't it actually the duty to work that is particularly reinforced ? After an historical and philosophical perspective on the issue, this assumption is confronted with the developments observed in the United States and in France, and then with the guidelines laid down in international human rights instruments. What follows is a discussion of two alternatives to the dominant activation model : the basic income guarantee and the employment guarantee.

Beginning in the 1990s large numbers of women from Mainland China and Southeast Asia married men in Taiwan. They now number over 400,000, warranting some to call them "Taiwan's Fifth Ethnic Group". This book argues that the rise of these marriages is a gendered and relational phenomenon, linked to the forces of globalization. Traditional ideas of marriage, such as the belief that a woman "marries out" of her natal family to be dependent upon her husband and his family, and the idea that a man should "marry down" to a woman of a lesser social and economic status, have not kept pace with changes in women's educational and career opportunities. Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Too often, though, he believes, physicists haven't subjected their assumptions to thorough scrutiny. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood.
"Surely physics is more than a collection of experimental results, assembled to satisfy the curiosity of appreciative experts," Newton writes. Physics, according to Newton, has moved beyond the describing and naming of curious phenomena, which is the goal of some other branches of science. Physicists have spent a great part of the twentieth century searching for explanations of experimental findings. Newton agrees that experimental facts are vital to the study of physics, but only because they lead to the development of a theory that can explain them. Facts, he argues, should undergird theory.
Newton's explanatory sweep is both broad and deep. He covers such topics as quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, field theory, thermodynamics, the role of mathematics in physics, and the concepts of probability and causality. For Newton the fundamental entity in quantum theory is the field, from which physicists can explain the particle-like and wave-like properties that are observed in experiments. He grounds his explanations in the quantum field.
Although this is not designed as a standalone textbook, it is essential reading for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and researchers. This is a clear, concise, up-to-date book about the concepts and theories that underlie the study of contemporary physics. Ce volume constitue la première monographie dédiée à l'oeuvre du photographe Joël Denot. Ses photographies échappent au regard comme à la classification : elles ne sont ni figuratives ni abstraites, elles s'inscrivent simultanément dans une pensée picturale. Elles sont avant tout matière, forme et couleur. Elles sont au-delà de l'image. On voit des surfaces colorées flottant dans le vide, s'encadrant les unes dans les autres et projetant des ombres de couleur qui se superposent : orange puis rose pâle puis bleu puis rose vif ; rouge puis vert puis rose puis gris-bleu. Une succession de plans flottant dans le vide coloré qui les entoure. Avec aussi, au bout d'un moment, dans un coin, si l'on regarde bien, une forme autre, celle d'un corps en train d'apparaître. Ou de disparaître. Echappant au regard là encore. Corps de l'artiste qui se met à l'oeuvre, dans l'oeuvre, retrouvant ainsi la trace photographique que le reste de l'image ferait oublier, articulant geste pictural et geste photographique au travers de la figure de ce corps qui transparaît, comme coulé dans la couleur.

German-Irish Corporate Relationships
The book addresses the question of whether, in an age of internationalisation and globalisation, cultural differences are still relevant to German-Irish corporate relationships ? The first three chapters establish the theoretical framework for the analysis by exploring the notion of culture, profiling the business cultures of both countries, and examining existing approaches to the study of parent company-foreign subsidiary relationships. In the following three chapters, using interviews carried out with two sample groups (fifteen German parent companies and fourteen of their Irish operations ; seven Irish parent companies and nine of their German operations), the parent companies in both groups are examined to see whether they demonstrate characteristics which are in keeping with their national business cultures. Their foreign operations are then analysed as is the parent company-foreign subsidiary relationship to determine whether any parent company influences are visible. The general approaches adopted by the two groups of parent companies to their foreign operations are compared and contrasted. Finally differences in national attitudes and values are identified and their impact assessed.

We cannot do without their knowledge, their spiritual perspective, and their deep faith in the harmony of all nature. Ignoring these qualities has profound environmental implications. Global warming, environmental pollution, and the exhaustion of nature's resources are but a few of the symptoms of the nature's experiences as we continue to mistreat it in order to satisfy our own ends. This work helps us to realise that wherever we are, we are a part of nature. All the things around us are as presences, representing forces and powers of life that are not ours and yet are all part of us. Then we find them reflecting in ourselves, because we are nature, though not identical with it.

En 2012, l'artiste américain Jared Bark, s'est mis à empiler des livres dans les champs et les bois autour de sa ferme. Il avait cette image en tête d'une colonne de livres dressée au bord d'un champ entouré d'arbres. Après avoir travaillé sur les piles en extérieur, Jared Bark a déplacé le projet dans son atelier, où il a fabriqué toutes sortes de piles de livres : des colorées, des brulées, des effacées...Plus récemment, Bark a construit des piles verticales de livres qui sont ensuite passées dans une scierie pour devenir une "cant", terme désignant une bûche qui a été fraisée sur les quatre côtés. La verticalité élancée de ces sculptures fait référence à la fois aux arbres dont on fait le papier et aux anciennes colonnes autoportantes que Bark a découvertes à Pompéi. Book of Stacks, Stacks of Books rassemble pour la première fois dans un livre une sélection complète des piles que Bark a réalisées au cours de la dernière décennie.

Weierstrass-Stone,
The Weierstrass-Stone Theorem is one of the main tools of modern analysis, and several parts of functional analysis would not exist without it. The purpose of this monograph is to present its true nature by proving several increasing generalizations of this theorem, going from the classical case of subalgebras to submodules and to arbitrary subsets of continuous functions over compact spaces. Some closely connected results on uniform approximation which are important for many applications are also presented, namely the Choquet-Deny and the Kakutani Theorems for semi-lattices and for lattices of continuous functions, respectively. The beautiful variation of the Weierstrass-Stone Theorem due to von Neumann is also included with the proof due to R. I. Jewett. The monograph ends with several recent results on uniform approximation of bounded continuous functions over non-compact spaces.

What do Christopher Columbus, Reneke, Zénobe Gramme and Louis Pasteur have in common ? They were all inventors. Well fine, but who invented the crab's claw, the suction cups and the flight of squids or the proboscis of blood sucking insects ? Is invention intellectual fantasy, an industrial tool or a fundamental biological reaction ? How is this riddle to be solved ? Should we go through the list of inventions or inventors ? Then we will devote an entire chapter to an exceptional inventor whose extraordinary work revolutionized how we now approach this topic. Finally, what can be said about all the inventions like the wings of birds or butterflies, the eyes of fish or insects, the leaves of trees or the social organization of beehives ? In these cases, man is not the inventor. There are countless marvels like these in the world around us. Can we explain them ? This will be the subject of the third part of this essay.

Normandy, France, January 15, 1943. The weather is clear, the sun is shining. Two Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft fly over the Bayeux-Caen railroad. The target is a German freight train - and its locomotive. Aboard the first Spitfire, Sergeant Ferguson is aligning his gun sights on the target. It is 02 : 30 p. m. This will be his very last flight... HARASSING THE OCCUPYING FORCES TO PREPARE THE INVASION The RAF and RCAF had been flying hundreds of similar sorties over France for months, in order to weaken the German forces, particularly the Luftwaffe. The pilots of No. 401 Squadron were among those who took part in this patient work, made up of constant patrols and attacks. Among the 63 men mentioned in this book, 25 were killed in action between 1942 and 1944. A CRASH THAT AWOKE THE SPIRIT OF RESISTANCE Touched by William Ferguson's sacrifice, some French citizens decided to bury the young Canadian flier with dignity, honour and respect. The Germans took this as a provocation. A few weeks later, the Sipo-SD (the "Gestapo") arrested a dozen of them. Empirical Issues in Formal Syntax and Semantics
The present volume is a collection of studies devoted to major issues in contemporary syntax and semantics : in particular, argument structure, ellipsis, negation and scope. The papers included, which represent a number of formally rigorous contemporary frameworks, bring out new facts from a large variety of languages as well as novel solutions to a broad range of analytic puzzles. Part One illustrates the major ways in which argument structure is used and conceptualized. Part Two provides new perspectives on ellipsis, applying concepts and tools developed for focus, questions and quantification. Part Three introduces a number of novel proposals for the representation of scope, considerably enlarging the empirical domain of scope relations. These studies are unusual in that they combine an enthusiasm for detailed syntactic and semantic data and a serious concern for formal rigor.
