Thinking about Physics
Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Too often, though, he believes, physicists haven't subjected their assumptions to thorough scrutiny. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood.
"Surely physics is more than a collection of experimental results, assembled to satisfy the curiosity of appreciative experts," Newton writes. Physics, according to Newton, has moved beyond the describing and naming of curious phenomena, which is the goal of some other branches of science. Physicists have spent a great part of the twentieth century searching for explanations of experimental findings. Newton agrees that experimental facts are vital to the study of physics, but only because they lead to the development of a theory that can explain them. Facts, he argues, should undergird theory.
Newton's explanatory sweep is both broad and deep. He covers such topics as quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, field theory, thermodynamics, the role of mathematics in physics, and the concepts of probability and causality. For Newton the fundamental entity in quantum theory is the field, from which physicists can explain the particle-like and wave-like properties that are observed in experiments. He grounds his explanations in the quantum field.
Although this is not designed as a standalone textbook, it is essential reading for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and researchers. This is a clear, concise, up-to-date book about the concepts and theories that underlie the study of contemporary physics. Readers will find that they will become better-informed physicists and, therefore, better thinkers and problem solvers, too.

Nogi, mangaka puceau, ne dirait pas forcément le contraire Car il s'avère autant incapable d'organiser un rendez-vous en bonne et due forme avec la femme qu'il aime que de prendre un selfie à ses côtés pour immortaliser leur bonheur (? ) sur Instagram. Mais il n'en a plus rien à faire !!! lui, en tant qu'artiste, c'est grâce à la pointe de sa plume (plutôt qu'au bout de sa verge) qu'il préfère passer à l'action. En tout cas, même si elle commence à avoir des doutes, Kanade accepte de sortir avec lui... De son côté, Renjô, le beau gay de service, perpétuellement obnubilé par l'amour qu'il porte à Nogi, n'arrive pas à rendre les planches de son manga. Sa carrière risque-t-elle de déjà s'interrompre ? ! à moins qu'il ne reçoive l'aide improbable de son ennemie jurée de toujours ? Quoi qu'il en soit, quand certains souvenirs remontent à la surface, les choses pourraient prendre une direction irréversible...

Camille, fille repentie d'un Blanchiste, pourrait l'aider dans sa mission. Très froide, la jeune femme prend rapidement congé de son vieil ami : elle ne veut plus se pencher sur cette part de son histoire. Les hasards de la vie, avec la mort de son père, figure tutélaire de ce mouvement, se chargeront de brouiller ses plans et la feront replonger dans ce passé haï qu'elle avait fui enfant, grâce à sa mère. Avec Battue, Marine Levéel et Lilian Coquillaud nous emmènent dans une partie de chasse étouffante, où une certaine idéologie marquée par l'ordre, l'esprit de caste et la domination du territoire se nourrit de la beauté de la nature sauvage, du mythe des origines. Bercé par la douce rugosité des espaces montagneux, le lecteur est plongé au plus profond de ce rapport pur et violent que ces hommes recherchent avec la nature. De ce contraste qui envoûte tout autant qu'il glace, les auteurs tressent un récit acéré d'émotions qui résonne au diapason du présent. Si la montagne est belle, le destin des hommes qui la traversent sera, lui, implacable.

A travers ce livre poignant, Marguerite Binoix témoigne de la complexité de l'engrenage qui mène à la violence conjugale. Avec force, elle relate le processus de destruction que subissent, parfois irrémédiablement, beaucoup trop de femmes au sein de leur couple.

After The Last Ship
After the Last Ship illustrates the author's own history, as well as its connection to the history of other women and children who left India and made the journey across the Kala Pani, the Indian Ocean, and lived as migrants in other countries. In this book the author brings greater understanding of how subjectivities are shaped through embodied experiences of ‘mixed race'. She bears witness to the oppressive policies of the fascist government in Portugal in the 1960's and 1970's and the effects of displacement and exile, by reconstructing her own passage from India to Mozambique and finally to Australia. Further, the author shows the devastation that labels such as ‘half-caste', ‘canecos' and ‘monhe' can cause, when they eat at your flesh, your being, and your body. She sheds light on how identity and culture can serve as vehicles of empowerment, how experiences of belonging can germinate and take root post-diaspora.

En France, une femme meurt tous les trois jours victime de violences conjugales. Comme Audrey. L'affaire se déroule aux confins de la région parisienne. Cette jeune mère harcelée par son ex-compagnon, insultée jusqu'à cent fois par jour au téléphone, menacée de mort, trouve son seul soutien dans l'affection de ses proches. Mais tout aussi démunis qu'elle, ces derniers se sentent impuissants à la protéger. Un jour, Audrey se résout à porter plainte à la gendarmerie de son bourg. En vain. L'homme qui la persécute jour et nuit, chez elle et sur son lieu de travail, n'est jamais interpellé. Quelques mois plus tard, le 23 mars 2007, il l'exécutera de neuf coups de couteau, dans la boutique où elle est vendeuse, au beau milieu d'un centre commercial, sous l'oeil atterré de ses collègues et des clients. L'histoire d'Audrey ressemble à celle de ses compagnes de malheur, sidérante et banale, vécue dans l'indifférence générale. Avec l'aide de la famille et des amis de la jeune femme, les auteurs ont reconstitué son lent calvaire, dans une enquête à mi-chemin entre récit objectif et manifeste pour les femmes.

The Undergrowth of Science. Delusion, self-deception and human frailty
Walter Gratzer's themes in the stories he relates in The Undergrowth of Science are collective delusion and human folly. Science is generally seen as a process bound by rigorous rules, which its practitioners must not transgress. Deliberate fraud occasionally intrudes, but it is soon detected, the perpetrators cast out and the course of discovery barely disturbed. Far more interesting are the outbreaks of self-delusion that from time to time afflict upright and competent researchers, and then spread like an epidemic or mass-hysteria through a sober and respectable scientific community. When this happens the rules by which scientists normally govern their working lives are suddenly suspended. Sometimes these episodes are provoked by personal vanity, an unwillingness to acknowledge error or even contemplate the possibility that a hard-won success is a will o' the wisp; at other times they stem from loyalty to a respected and trusted guru, or even from patriotic pride; and, worst of ail, they may be a consequence of a political ideology which imposes its own interpretation on scientists' observations of the natural world. Unreason and credulity supervene, illusory phenomena are described and measured, and theories are developed to explain them - until suddenly, often for no single reason, the bubble bursts, leaving behind it a residue of acrimony, recrimination, embarrassment and ruined reputations.
Here, then, are radiations, measured with high precision yet existing only in the minds of those who observed them; the Russian water, which some thought might congeal the oceans: phantom diseases which called for heroic surgery; monkey testis implants that restored the sexual powers of ageing roués and of tired sheep; truths about genetics and about the nature of matter, perceptible only to Aryan scientists in the Third Reich or Marxist ideologues in the Soviet Union; and much more. The Undergrowth of Science explores, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the history of such episodes, up to our own time, in ail their absurdity, tragedy and pathos.

In the vast silence of their isolation, the traditional Igbos have learnt the ways of living in harmony with nature. From their origin in distant time, they have kept a sacred perspective on the natural world. In our age, there is the need for traditional wisdoms to retain their validity and be intrinsic to our philosophic and scientific perceptions of the cosmos. We cannot do without their knowledge, their spiritual perspective, and their deep faith in the harmony of all nature. Ignoring these qualities has profound environmental implications. Global warming, environmental pollution, and the exhaustion of nature's resources are but a few of the symptoms of the nature's experiences as we continue to mistreat it in order to satisfy our own ends. This work helps us to realise that wherever we are, we are a part of nature. All the things around us are as presences, representing forces and powers of life that are not ours and yet are all part of us. Then we find them reflecting in ourselves, because we are nature, though not identical with it.

The Transcultural Dictionary of Misunderstandings. European and Chinese Horizons is the result of an initiative which forges a radically new path for promoting transcultural understanding by studying culture-bound keywords. The stimulating idea is to create and address with intention that which is generally held to be by all means avoided : namely, misunderstandings. The experiment starts with a level of communication that is not political per se but cultural. Cultures have no rigid borders like nation-states. They are more dynamic and meandering, open to influence, and translatable. Like cultures themselves, keywords are saturated with history, long-term experience, values, and collective emotions. They carry a load of tacit knowledge and implicit axioms that have the advantage of not having to be unpacked, explained, or spelled out. Working through various semantic layers of keywords on both sides helps to create a more transparent language for transcultural dialogue. The creation of such a language is the effect of producing, exchanging, and working through misunderstandings on both sides. Within the framework of transcultural dialogue, misunderstandings turn out to be an innovative tool for mutual learning by seeing oneself through the eyes of the other. It is high time for researchers in various parts of the world to join forces and translate basic concepts from one language and culture into another. Every translation is a transformation, marking similarities and differences which can lead to an uncovering of new ideas, values, and cultural practices. This unconventional dialogue is a great source of inspiration because it works through hardened assumptions and misrepresentations, unsettles schematic thinking, and leads to unexpected insights and new points of contact. Charge of the Bull
Few will deny that 11th Bristish Armoured Division, the "Charging Bulls" of this story, was the finest armoured division on any side in the Normandy campaign in 1944. Soon after the end of the war, the history of the Division, Taurus Pursuant, was published in England in 1946. About 30 years later, Jean Brisset published his French-language book, La Charge du Taureau, about the same Division. It quickly went through two editions in France. What ensured its success was that it enlivened and humanized the well-know official accounts of the Division's battles in Operations EPSOM, GOODWOOD, BLUECOAT and others with the personal stories of participants in those battles who were often soldiers of humble but honourable rank. In addition, he paralleled the British military story with accounts of the experiences of French civilians caught up in the terror of thoses same battles, the anguish of theur tragedies and losses and the joy of their liberation. It is a history unique of its kind and deserves to be presented in this English translation. In addition to the story about 11th Armoured Division an Appendix telles about the battles in the Normandy bocage fought alongside the "Charging Bulls" by the hard-fighting 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division and how the local civilians and Resistance fighters helped them. Another Appendix recounts, among other adventures, how a little 5-year-old French girl saved an Australian Spitfire pilot from recapture by the Germans after he had been shot clown in the bocage. Finally, an Epilogue brings the story up to date. It pays homage to those, both British and French, who strove to keep alive the flames of remembrance, mutual gratitude and friendship. Containing over 100 photographs and illustrated by 9 maps, specially draw for this edition, The Charge of the Bull is a nostalgic trip back for those who fought in Normandy in 1944 and an important addition to the litterature about that campaign.

Quand l'horreur dépasse l'entendement, saurez-vous distinguer la réalité de vos pires cauchemars ? Les agents spéciaux Shaw et McGregor sont désormais en charge des affaires courantes, et c'est exactement ce que Shaw aime. Elle a presque 40 ans, à la limite de l'épuisement et les souvenirs effroyables de sa dernière enquête la hantent comme des ombres. McGregor, quant à lui, est plus jeune et plus dévoué : il s'accroche à une certaine forme d'idéalisme, quoi que le monde puisse lui faire subir. Lorsque deux de leurs collègues disparaissent dans un entrepôt de Long Beach, Shaw et McGregor sont envoyés pour enquêter. Mais ils sont loin d'imaginer ce qui les attend et les deux agents vont se confronter à une terreur dépassant leurs plus terribles cauchemars, dans un lieu où la nuit pourrait ne jamais se terminer.

I. , Shaw et McGregor, voient leur réalité se tordre une fois de plus, les plongeant dans une toute nouvelle dimension de terreur. Leur guide est Paul Carnahan, le tueur d'enfants dont ils ne sont jamais parvenus à prouver la culpabilité, un homme que l'on sait pourtant mort et enterré. Au fur et à mesure que ce monstre trop humain raconte son histoire, le duo commence à réaliser l'horreur véritable de leur situation - une vérité qui exigera de chacun un lourd sacrifice. Frappée par les souvenirs de ses fautes professionnelles, la directrice adjointe Driscoll s'efforce d'atteindre les deux agents, avant de comprendre que ses crimes ont peut-être déjà scellé leur destin. Carnahan détient toutes les réponses - mais l'homme qui se cache derrière est désormais bien plus qu'un simple meurtrier. Ancient Greek by Its Translators
When not familiar with the language itself, most readers over the centuries have had access to the ancient Greek texts only or mostly through (Latin or vernacular) translations. Such an approach is not only indirect and mediated, but also distorted and even impoverishing : meaning then prevails over the linguistic form and substance of the texts themselves. What do later or modern readers read when they read translated texts written in an ancient so-called dead language ? They read a given meaning - sometimes unfaithful, often inaccurate - dictated by a genuine understanding, the blind continuation of tradition, or an untold hidden intention. The complex range of significances conveyed by meaning simultaneously reflects the time and space (called synchrony) of when and where a text has been translated, the historical learning and linguistic skills of the translators, as well as their ideas and style. As a contribution to the perennial debate about translation (mere literary transliteration vs. creative transposition), this volume aims at analyzing some striking cases of various (literary or not) texts translated from ancient Greek showing how much for the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries aesthetics and ideology matter as much as - and often even more than - rigorous philology.
