Aspects of the syntax of educated Singaporean English
This work consists of a collection of eight papers on the syntax of English as spoken and written by educated Singaporeans. The topics dealt with include various aspects of verb-phrase structure and use, comparative constructions, and relative pronoun selection. Some of the papers are dialectological in focus and some theoretical, but all were researched through questionnaire-based interviews and/or examination of bodies of written material. Eleven Singapore researchers collaborated with the editor in this project.

Charles Darwin's Zoology Notes & Specimen Lists from H.M.S. Beagle
Two long sets of scientific notes were made by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. Those transcribed here are concerned with natural history, and although in 1839 he drew on them quite extensively in writing his famous " Journal of Researches ", neither they nor his geology notes have previously been published. He was a superb observer, and recorded vividly and accurately his first impressions of the appearance and behaviour of the wide range of animals, from ants to ostriches, encountered during his travels. Often he performed little experiments on the creatures that he captured, and he was never happy until he had exhaustively explored the why and wherefore of every one of his observations. During the long periods on board ship, he carried out a thorough analysis of hitherto unrecognised features of the internal anatomy of a variety of marine invertebrates, and made elegant pencil drawings of them under his dissecting microscope. The volume also includes his lists of 1 500 specimens preserved in Spirits of Wine, and some 3 500 not in Spirits, with impeccably accurate cross references to the main notes. Although his notes were made strictly for his own use, and were often highly technical, they were well written throughout, and contain many highly readable passages. Only towards the very end of the voyage were his first doubts about the immutability of species consciously pressed, but here are to be found the first seeds of his theory of evolution, and of the important new fields of behavioural and ecological study of which he was one of the principal founders.

Topics covered include the Ten Commandments, the ""Creed"", the Lord's Prayer, and the sacraments of baptism and the altar. Ideas and instructions are also included for morning and evening devotions and giving thanks at mealtime. This little catechism, still widely used within the Lutheran Church, has gems of truth that many Christians will find to be both instructive and inspirational--regardless of denomination. Though few in words, it provides a wonderful explanation that has helped many to both learn the basics of Christian doctrine and apply them in a practical way to their lives.

Numerical Methods for Wave equation in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics. With 93 illustrations
This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations governing wave-like and weakly dissipative flows. The focus of the book is on fundamental methods and standard fluid dynamical problems such as tracer transport, the shallow-water equations, and the Euler equations. The emphasis is on methods appropriate for applications in atmospheric and oceanic science, but these same methods are also well suited for the simulation of wave-like flows in many other scientific and engineering disciplines. The text discusses finite-difference, spectral, finite-element, and finite-volume methods. Also included are additional chapters on semi-Lagrangian schemes, nonreflecting boundary conditions, and methods for the efficient solution of problems that include physically insignificant rapidly propagating waves. Throughout the book the author has followed a middle course between the theorem-proof formalism of a pure mathematics text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. Although there are no formal proofs, the essential characteristics of the various schemes are mathematically derived in a style familiar to physical scientists. Numerical examples illustrating the theoretically derived properties of the various methods are presented throughout the book to establish a concrete link between theory and practice. Both theoretical and applied problems are provided at the end of each chapter. Numerical Methods for Wave Equations in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics will be useful as a senior undergraduate and graduate text, and as a reference for those teaching or using numerical methods, particularly for those concentrating on fluid dynamics.

Emilie Allais nous emporte sur un terrain étrange. Disparaître de la société pour exister sous une nouvelle identité. Ces images font écho à ce phénomène qui nous paraît irréel : renaître pour devenir quelqu'un d'autre. Karine Maussière arpente l'île de la Réunion depuis un an. Elle la photographie, la dessine, la sculpte. Elle nous invite à voir son île en lui donnant une identité protéiforme par la forme, les couleurs, les matières. Elle s'y perd, disparaît, mais s'y complaît. Rachele Cassetta se dit avoir une identité nomade. Entre l'Italie, la France, l'Espagne ou la Grèce, son travail photographique ne parle pas de frontière mais de lien commun. Elle se sent, comme elle dit, "une fille de la Méditerranée" , non pas du continent mais de ses horizons. Vanessa Hiblot se dédie à mettre en image, par le portrait, la dualité entre l'image de soi, celle qu'on projette, celle que l'on a intériorisée, celle dont on rêve, une touche belle et sincère sur la transition identitaire.

L'irrésistible appel de la vengeance
Amanda n'est pas au mieux de sa forme : auteur de polar has been, malheureuse en amour et un peu trop portée sur le gin, elle s'aperçoit avec dépit qu'il est difficile de se remettre en selle à cinquante ans. En attendant des jours meilleurs, elle anime un atelier d'écriture. Sous sa direction, un petit groupe de prétendants à la gloire littéraire s'exerce à l'art du crime parfait. Parmi eux, Rutger, le beau tennisman, Vanessa, la MILF tirée à quatre épingles, Giovanni, le romantique octogénaire, et Ludovica, l'insupportable agent littéraire d'Amanda. Chapitre après chapitre, professeur et élèves se plongent dans les mécanismes subtils d'une intrigue romanesque, mais aussi dans ceux, plus insidieux, des passions qui les lient les uns aux autres. L'ironie irrévérencieuse de Rosa Mogliasso fait mouche. Et tandis qu'elle nous montre les règles de construction du plus infaillible des polars, elle s'amuse à les saboter. Jusqu'à l'imprévisible coup de théâtre final. Mais attention, un roman peut parfois en cacher un autre...

Jorge Semprún
Jorge Semprún is a leading writer from the first generation of Spanish Civil War exiles, yet studies of his work have often focused solely on his literary testimony to the concentration camps and his political activities. Although Semprún's work derives from his incarceration in Buchenwald and his expulsion from the Spanish Communist Party in 1964, limiting the discussion of his works to the autobiographical details or to the realm of Holocaust studies is reductive. The responses by many influential writers to his recent death highlight that the significance of Semprún's work goes beyond the testimony of historical events. His self-identification as a Spanish exile has often been neglected and there is no comprehensive study of his works available in English. This book provides a global view of his oeuvre and extends literary analysis to texts that have received little critical attention. The author investigates the role played by memory in some of Semprún's works, drawing on current debates in the field of memory studies. A detailed analysis of these works allows related concepts, such as exile and nostalgia, the Holocaust, the interplay between memory and writing, politics and collective memory, and postmemory and identity, to be examined and discussed.

This they did by effecting their own selections, shaping a distinctive idiom of discourse, all the while citing, responding to, reflecting upon, Scripture's own words in Scripture's own context and for Scripture's own purpose : the here and now of eternal truth. And the rabbis of the first six centuries A.D. through the compilation presented here not only wrote with Scripture, but set forth a statement that was meant to be coherent and proportioned, well-crafted and well-composed. Since the statement concerned the distinctively-theological question of God's and Israel's relationship with one another, we must classify the writing as theological and find out how, in the compilation before us, their theological structure accomplished the authorship's goals. This anthology aims at doing just that. It presents a complete account of how the classical Midrash-text treat a theme of urgent interest to the world today : how Judaism writes with Scripture about the issues of religion that confront all the faithful.

Despite the considerable amount of scholarship on Mann's work, his tetralogy – composed prior to and during his exile from Nazi Germany – has received less attention and has not been examined from the perspective of the relationship of visuality to narrative. In this study of Mann's reworking of the biblical account of Jacob, father of Joseph, the author examines the ways the novel's protagonists frame their environment through knowledge and meaning gained via specific acts of seeing. While considering Mann's oft-stated intent to refunctionalize myth by means of psychology for humane and progressive purposes, the book explores the lavish narrative attention Mann gives to visual detail, visual stimulation, the protagonists' eyes, ways of seeing, and even to staging and performance in anticipation of another's way of seeing. The results reveal that the plot of the first Joseph novel is carried and propelled by a series of visual encounters during which the narrative draws attention to the protagonists' eyes and acts of looking.

Reading Forster's novel and Ivory's film together gives a stunning opportunity to re-assess the representation of Pre-World War One modernity. Far from presenting Edwardian England as a golden period, Howards End explores social structures, social mobility, real estate, the ambivalent relation to culture and new technological modes of communication and transport. Stylistically, the novel breaks new ground with its Protean narrative voice, and transitions towards Modernism with its mythic, musical method. The eponymous house becomes a metaphor for ecological balance, a new kind of extended family structure, a network of connections and a new sense of community. If Howards End as a novel reinvents literary legacy and redefines personal and national heritage, Ivory's adaptation must also be reassessed as so-called heritage cinema, far from the clichés of a purely aesthetic approach. Cinq jours après le départ d'Arnaud et Ana en Martinique, il est dix heures quinze, le samedi 14 novembre 2020, monsieur le facteur roule à vélo sur le trottoir de l'avenue des Alpes à Beaurains, il s'arrête devant la maison d'Arnaud et Ana gardée par Alban et Charlotte, il sort une enveloppe dans laquelle se trouve une carte postale envoyée par les nouveaux mariés. Alban ouvre la porte de la maison lorsque monsieur le facteur met l'enveloppe dans la boîte aux lettres. Le facteur continue sa tournée lorsqu'Alban, clé en main s'approche de la boîte aux lettres pour récupérer la carte postale envoyée par ses meilleurs amis. Il retourne à l'intérieur de la maison en refermant la porte derrière lui. Alban ouvre l'enveloppe et découvre la jolie carte postale représentant un paysage de la Martinique. Il l'ouvre dans la cuisine et lit : Nos chers amis, Un petit bonjour de notre villa de Martinique où nous passons un agréable séjour, loin de la grisaille et du froid. Nous nous sommes fait plein de nouveaux amis tous plus souriants et chaleureux les uns que les autres.

Arno Fugiers et son ami David Viel, flic, ont été enlevés sur les ordres de Pablo Cordoba, chef d'un cartel mexicain. Après leur évasion, Fugiers se retrouve inopinément chargé de l'enquête. Il doit faire équipe avec Ana, agent des services secrets espagnols, au physique ingrat et portée sur la boisson. D'emblée, l'enquête s'annonce complexe : outre la bande de Mexicains dirigée par Pablo Cordoba, dont le corps sans tête vient d'être retrouvé, la mafia russe semble également impliquée. L'enquête se complique davantage quand Fugiers apprend que ses empreintes ont été retrouvées sur l'arme du crime. Tout semble lié à un trafic d'organes. Très vite, Fugiers comprend que la boîte d'allumettes qu'il a retrouvé dans sa poche et qui a été la cause de son enlèvement dissimule un laser pour réaliser des prélèvements d'organes. Des organes qui sont essentiellement ceux de filles de l'Est envoyées en France. Il comprend aussi que Diane Moreau, l'inspectrice de l'IGPN qui le traque, est très intéressée par le laser à des fins militaires. Ana assassinée, Gino et Diane enlevés, Fugiers se retrouve seul pour démanteler le réseau…
