Cette chrestomathie, qui couvre la période 1930-1960, permet ainsi de comprendre une pensée politique qui pourrait se définir comme une véritable troisième voie.

Revue de la Bibliothèque nationale de France N° 59/2019 : World-building. Création de mondes et imaginaires contemporains
A l'heure où la fantasy séduit de plus en plus (Le Seigneur des anneaux, Game of Thrones...), plaçant les "mondes inventés" au coeur de la culture populaire, ce dossier s'interroge sur leurs formes et leurs usages en confrontant le regard des historiens du genre à celui des spécialistes des médias et des créateurs, qu'ils soient écrivains ou concepteurs de jeux. L'invention de mondes imaginaires L'invention de mondes imaginaires est une idée aussi ancienne que l'humanité, depuis l'Atlantide de Platon, ou encore l'Utopia de Thomas More. Mais c'est dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle en Angleterre, avec Lewis Carroll et William Morris, que naissent la fantasy et sa pratique, le worldbuilding. Un genre qui connaîtra un succès prodigieux à partir des années 1960, à travers l'oeuvre de Robert E. Howard (Conan le Barbare) et celle de Tolkien (Le Seigneur des anneaux). Anne Besson retrace pour nous l'histoire du genre pour lequel Tolkien tient lieu de modèle, l'écrivain-démiurge qui, pour créer sa mythologie personnelle, dessine des cartes, crée une cosmogonie, élabore des chroniques... Les cartes jouent en effet un rôle spécifique dans la création des mondes imaginaires, ainsi que l'expose Julie Garel-Grislin dans son article. La fantasy connaît en France une apparition tardive (les premières traductions datent des années 1970) : il faut attendre le nouveau dynamisme éditorial de la fin des années 1990, décrit par Marie-Lucie Bougon, pour la voir s'affirmer et se singulariser (avec des éditeurs comme Mnémos, Bragelonne...). Ce succès éditorial, très marqué chez les jeunes enfants et les adolescents, nous conduit à nous interroger, aux côtés de Laurent Bazin, sur les raisons d'une telle fascination au-delà du simple besoin de divertissement. Un succès transmédia L'engouement pour ces imaginaires contemporains s'étend bien au-delà de la littérature, porté par le développement de nouveaux médias (bandes dessinées, pulps, films, séries télévisées, jeux vidéo, jeux de rôle...), chaque support nourrissant l'autre, avec l'ambition de construire un monde complet et consistant, quoique fictif. Les créations de nouveaux univers sont pléthoriques au cinéma (Star Wars, adaptation du Seigneur des anneaux), dans les séries (Game of Thrones ou Westworld), le jeu vidéo (World of Warcraft ou Assassin's Creed) et même les jouets (Lego)... Elles sont aujourd'hui au coeur de la culture populaire au point de faire émerger une nouvelle communauté de fans, les "geeks", qu'ils soient fervents lecteurs de fantasy, de mangas, ou de comics, "rôlistes", gamers, amateurs de séries fantastiques ou de films d'horreur. David Peyron nous dit quelles pratiques se cachent derrière ce vocable, tandis qu'Olivier Caïra revient sur les jeux de rôle sur table, tels que Donjons et dragons. Les genres de l'imaginaire sont également très présents sur le petit écran, depuis Star Trek jusqu'à Game of Thrones, au point de brouiller la frontière avec le cinéma. Une évolution que décrit Florent Favard. Alain Boillat se concentre quant à lui sur le cas de Westworld qui, tout en reprenant les codes du western, explore la problématique de l'intelligence artificielle et tend un miroir à nos préoccupations contemporaines... La parole aux "créateurs" Il s'agit aussi d'entendre la parole des créateurs, de ceux qui donnent corps à ces univers, qu'ils soient écrivains ou concepteurs de jeux. Des écrivains français se sont prêtés au jeu, tels que Jean-Philippe Jaworski, auteur de deux cycles de fantasy, Récits du Vieux Royaume et Rois du monde (éditions des Moutons électriques), Lionel Davoust, auteur des Chroniques d'Evanégyre (éditions Critic), ou encore la Canadienne Karoline Georges, auteur de romans d'anticipation (SF Folio). Côté jeux vidéo, la société Ubisoft expose sa ligne éditoriale et la manière dont elle reconstruit des mondes historiques disparus, comme dans son dernier opus, Assassin's Creed Odyssey (2018), dont l'action se situe en Grèce pendant la guerre du Péloponnèse. Tout doit concourir à l'immersion du lecteur ou du joueur... Derrière Malko, un moustachu prit sous une banquette une kalach à crosse pliante et la braqua sur les trois visiteurs. Plusieurs hommes avaient sorti des armes. On était parti pour un massacre. Il y avait des tas de billets sur toutes les tables. De quoi acheter la moitié des voix du Kosovo. Malko baissa les yeux : le canon de la kalach visait son ventre. Dans leur hâte à éteindre la nouvelle guerre des Balkans, à la conférence de Rambouillet censée décider de l'avenir du Kosovo, en 1999, les négociateurs occidentaux avaient promis aux Serbes que le Kosovo resterait éternellement Serbe. Normalement il aurait suffi d'une résolution du Conseil de sécurité des Nations unis, remplaçant la résolution 1244 qui avait entériné l'autonomie du Kosovo, pour résoudre le problème. Hélas, la Russie avait volé au secours de la Serbie et averti qu'elle mettrait son veto à toute résolution accordant l'indépendance aux Kosovars. Or, ceux-ci, excédés de cet interminable retard, expirant le 10 décembre 2007, menaçaient de proclamer unilatéralement leur indépendance. Une perspective qui donnait des sueurs froides à tous les diplomates de l'Union européenne. Alors, les dix-sept mille soldats de la KFOR se préparaient au pire...

Italie, Allemagne, France. Un triangle européen
Les questions yougoslave, allemande et européenne sont comparables à des poupées russes emboîtées les unes dans les autres. Dans la destruction de la Yougoslavie de 1991-1992 à 1999, le rôle de l'Allemagne tout récemment unifiée en 1989-1990 et, sous son impulsion déjà hégémonique, de la CEE, devenue Union européenne (UE), fut souvent négatif. Le paradoxe de cette destruction, c'est que la Yougoslavie refondée par Tito en 1945 après la défaite hitlérienne, bien plus nettement que la première Yougoslavie unifiée en 1918 sous une dynastie serbe victorieuse et centralisatrice, était - avec son séduisant socialisme autogestionnaire - "européenne" avant la lettre, trop peut-être pour son malheur : multinationale, pluriculturelle, fédérale, voire confédérale, et soucieuse de modernisation économique et d'ouverture sur le monde. Sous prétexte d'une "crise" persistante, l'intégration à l'UE des Etats ex-yougoslaves est à présent interrompue. D'où une coupure potentiellement néfaste entre les Etats déjà intégrés - Croatie et Slovénie - et ceux en attente plus ou moins sceptique d'intégration - Bosnie-Herzégovine, Macédoine, Monténégro et Serbie -, comme si perduraient les anciennes lignes de fracture entre Empires romains d'Occident et d'Orient, catholicisme et orthodoxie, Empire austro-hongrois et Empire ottoman ou encore capitalisme et socialisme ou communisme.

Recherche jeune homme aimant le cinéma. Souvenirs
Pierre Grimblat semble avoir passé un pacte avec la chance : d'origine modeste, autodidacte d'un naturel charmeur et fantaisiste, il débute à Saint-Germain-des-Prés en disant ses poèmes aux terrasses des cafés. Remarqué par Boris Vian et Raymond Queneau, il entre à la radio, puis gravit rapidement tous les échelons des métiers du spectacle. D'abord dans le disque avec Jacques Canetti, ensuite dans la publicité près de Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet, puis au cinéma comme réalisateur - c'est dans Slogan que Serge Gainsbourg rencontre Jane Birkin - enfin à la télévision où avec un flair infaillible, il crée et produit la plupart des célèbres "séries" qui font les grands soirs du petit écran. Au fil de sa carrière, menée avec une désinvolture légendaire, il privilégie l'amitié, l'amour du public et les femmes. Ecrits dans une langue verte, qui fait parfois songer aux dialogues de son ami Audiard, ses "souvenirs" rassemblent un prodigieux casting. On y retrouve ses copains (de Truffaut à Eddie Constantine et Maurice Ronet, son "frère"), ses conquêtes féminines (innombrables, pittoresques, et dispersées entre Beverly Hills et Saint-Tropez) et ses émotions de jeune enfant d'émigrés ébloui par Paris. Des mémoires ? Oui. Mais inattendues. Et d'où l'on ressort avec une furieuse envie de vivre.

Tout va bien, m'man ! Souvenirs rock'n'rôles
Il a traversé un demi-siècle de cinéma français, tournant avec Godard, Barbet Schroeder, Rivette ou encore Lelouch, Truffaut et Chabrol. Après des débuts au théâtre, Jean-Pierre Kalfon a fait le choix d'un cinéma exigeant et éclectique, loin des sentiers battus. Pourtant, rien ne le destinait à une carrière aussi détonante : il a été enfant de choeur, ses parents n'avaient ni télévision ni tourne-disques. Adolescent, il fugue pour découvrir les caves du Quartier Latin : Le Tabou, Le Caveau de la Huchette, Les Trois Mailletz... Bientôt naît son goût pour la scène : il sera le premier à repérer l'inoubliable Pierre Clémenti. Nombreux sont ceux dont il croisera la route : Pierre Brasseur, Jacques Brel, Annie Girardot, Romain Gary, Alain Delon, Lauren Bacall... A la télévision, on le verra dans des téléfilms et séries à succès (Maigret, Navarro, La Rivière Espérance, Mafiosa...) Le théâtre et le cinéma ne sont pas ses seules passions. Ce fou d'Elvis et des Doors a fondé le "Kalfon Roc Chaud" et "Black Minestrone", collaborant avec Bob Marley, les New York Dolls, Serge Gainsbourg... A quatre fois vingt ans, Jean-Pierre Kalfon ne se prend toujours pas au sérieux : il signe des souvenirs filousophiques d'un humour et d'une vivacité réjouissants !

Mileva Einstein. A l'ombre d'un génie
Zurich, été 1896. A l'Ecole polytechnique fédérale, Mileva Maric´ commence des études de mathématiques et de physique. Cette jeune Serbe est la seule femme de la classe. Un étudiant venu d'Allemagne la remarque. Il s'appelle Albert Einstein. C'est le début d'une histoire d'amour et de science. Elle va durer dix-sept ans. Trois enfants vont naître de cette union : Lieserl, curieusement disparue en Serbie, Hans-Albert et Eduard, qui sera traité toute sa vie dans un asile pour schizophrénie en Suisse. Parallèlement, les époux travaillent ensemble à ce qui deviendra la théorie de la relativité. Mais en 1905, sur la publication, seul le nom d'Albert figure. En 1913, ils se séparent. Albert est devenu célèbre. Milena retourne à l'anonymat. Dans cette double biographie, Laurent Lemire nous projette au moment où naît la théorie de la relativité et pose un regard tout à fait nouveau sur la relation entre Einstein et son épouse, relation d'amour fusionnelle et de travail commun intense. Il redonne à Mileva la place qui lui revient dans cette aventure qui a révolutionné la physique, bien que l'époque et sa condition de femme l'ont contrainte à une existence dans l'ombre.

Race and Realpolitik
German colonisation in Samoa from 1900 to 1914 was characterised by the interplay of conflicting definitions of race. The central question this study asks is to what extent, and in which ways, ideologies of race shaped German colonial policy in Samoa. It analyses the administration's paternalist development policies, debates over white settlement, the introduction and treatment of indentured labourers, and the legal classification of mixed marriages and half-castes. The author argues that rather than uniting the colonising community in a racist mission of domination, racial thought amplified the fissures in German Samoa's population and supported the administration's Realpolitik.

This book examines the theological epistemologies of two of this century's most prominent theologians, Hans Urs von Balthasar and Karl Barth. Both theologians responded to modernist theologies by drawing from the best of their own traditions. Phenomenological Realism
The phenomenology of Edmund Husserl is being analyzed in regard to its ontological implications. It is demonstrated that Husserl's method of reduction directly leads to an ontological idealism for which there is no epistemological justification. An alternative to this "idealistic" misunderstanding of the phenomenological approach is being developed in applying Heidegger's existential analysis to questions of epistemology and transcendental philosophy. It is thus shown that phenomenology may be established on safer grounds : not on the basis of a pure transcendental subject, but on life-world understood in the realistic sense of transcending the ego.

On the night of the 31st of December 1943, two British commandos successfully collected a few samples of sand and peat under the very nose of the Germans posted at Ver-sur-Mer. Five months later, some 25, 000 men followed in their footsteps and landed on the same shores, codenamed Gold Beach. Barely had they landed, the British troops set out to building an artificial harbour, undoubtedly one of the finest technical feats of the Second World War. It was to prove a major asset for securing Allied supremacy in the months that followed the D-Day Landings.

Mass Culture Criticism and 'Dissent' by Lou Anne Bulik offers a provocative new look at the debate over mass culture in American magazines during the post World War II years. Bulik traces the influence of the Frankfurt School's analysis of mass culture on American intellectuals ; explores the course of the mass culture discussion in Politics, Partisan Review, Daedalus, Diogenes, and Dissent ; and suggests that Dissent's approach to the issue differed substantially from that of other magazines. Because Dissent focused on the impact of mass culture on the mind, Bulik suggests that the debate in Dissent was actually an attempt to articulate the presentiment that mass culture, particularly through the paradigm of television, would change patterns of thought and understanding. The study concludes with a look at recent criticism which lends newfound weight to Dissent's discussion of mass culture in the 1950s and early 1960s.

This book describes the nature and development of the "profound understanding of fundamental mathematics" that elementary teachers need to become accomplished mathematics teachers, and suggests why such teaching knowledge is much more common in China than in the United States, despite the fact that Chinese teachers have less formal education than their U.S. counterparts.
The studies described in this volume suggest that Chinese teachers begin their teaching careers with a better understanding of elementary mathematics than mat of most U.S. elementary teachers. Their understanding of the mathematics they teach and-equally important-of the ways that elementary mathematics can be presented to students, continues to grow throughout their professional lives.
Teaching conditions in the United States, unlike those in China, militate against the development of elementary teachers' mathematical knowledge and its organization for teaching. Empirical Issues in Formal Syntax and Semantics
The present volume is a collection of studies devoted to major issues in contemporary syntax and semantics : in particular, argument structure, ellipsis, negation and scope. The papers included, which represent a number of formally rigorous contemporary frameworks, bring out new facts from a large variety of languages as well as novel solutions to a broad range of analytic puzzles. Part One illustrates the major ways in which argument structure is used and conceptualized. Part Two provides new perspectives on ellipsis, applying concepts and tools developed for focus, questions and quantification. Part Three introduces a number of novel proposals for the representation of scope, considerably enlarging the empirical domain of scope relations. These studies are unusual in that they combine an enthusiasm for detailed syntactic and semantic data and a serious concern for formal rigor. They discuss data from a wide variety of languages, including Japanese, Bulgarian, French, Greek, English, Italian, German, Hungarian, Inuit and Western Austronesian languages. The main themes of the book include negation, argument structure, ellipsis, indefinites, telicity, presuppositions, modality and quantification.

Victory will be next ! A Diary, 6th June - 10th August 1944
The story takes place in Brittany, focussing on Rennes and Redon, i.e. about 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, about fifteen minutes by plane as the crow flies. The months of June and July 1944 were very difficult for the allied troops. They relentlessly fought to block German reinforcements coming from the West and the South, which resulted in constant bombing and machine-gunning of the rear boundary of the front line, the area where we were living. As civilians, we did not take part in the fighting and everyday life alternated between calm periods, on the verge of being "normal", and tragic moments of great tension. ''Victory will be next ! " is a set of notes written at that moment in time, day by day, by a fifteen-year-old boy. They are, obviously, fragmented, even a little naive, But they are nonetheless a testimony of a snapshot of history within the larger picture of WWII. They should be taken as such.
