Andrea Sacchi and Cardinal del Monte. The Rediscovered Frescoes in the Palazzo di Ripetta in Rome
This fascinating and beautifully illustrated book presents for the first time the rediscovered frescoes painted by Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661) for the loggia of Cardinal del Monte's Roman palace near via di Ripetta, Rome. Considered lost by generations of scholars, Andrea Sacchi's fresco cycle has survived in a private apartment in Rome. Largely unpublished and rarely mentioned in recent literature, the frescoes underwent a revelatory restoration in 2010-11. For the past three years, the author was granted exclusive access to study them thoroughly - resulting in this monograph. Accompanied by beautiful and full photographic documentation, this study aims to compare the painted images with the detailed description given by the biographer Giovan Pietro Bellori ; to shed light on the iconography and style, above all with respect to the sources used ; and to integrate this key commission within Sacchi's early career. The cycle's iconography is explored with careful verification of early sources that now allows us to resolve some particularly complex problems of interpretation - above all those relating to alchemy. Cardinal del Monte's Palazzo di Ripetta housed a fully equipped pharmacological laboratory. Research on this cycle of frescoes has also made it possible to discover new archival evidence regarding Sacchi's date and place of birth.

Dans le New York des années 1950, avant qu'il devienne l'un des noms les plus célèbres du XXe siècle, Andy Warhol fut un dessinateur publicitaire talentueux et apprécié. A cette époque, dans le cadre de sa stratégie pour séduire et fidéliser ses clients et sceller des amitiés, il réalisa de sa main sept livres promotionnels envoyés à des contacts triés sur le volet, où s'exposent ses dessins uniques et ses textes excentriques, et où s'exprime son goût pour les chats, la nourriture, les mythes, les chaussures, les beaux garçons et les filles magnifiques, entre autres sujets. Des dizaines d'années plus tard, alors que les originaux s'échangent pour des milliers de dollars en salles des ventes, TASCHEN présente un impeccable coffret rassemblant les sept livres, reproduisant aussi fidèlement que possible les originaux de Warhol jusque dans le format, les dimensions et le papier. Le portfolio de lithographies A is for Alphabet consacre une page à chaque lettre de l'alphabet, avec des illustrations complétées par des strophes déroutantes de trois vers qui racontent des rencontres étranges entre l'homme et l'animal. In the Bottom of My Garden est à la fois la version warholienne d'un livre pour enfants et une célébration cachée de l'amour homosexuel. Quant à Wild Raspberries, il s'agit d'une parodie de livre de cuisine contenant pléthore de recettes audacieuses en 19 pages au format portrait contenant instructions et illustrations. Joyaux peu connus mais fort convoités de la couronne du roi Warhol, ces opus écrits et dessinés à la main sont aussi intéressants et originaux aujourd'hui qu'ils le furent dans les lointaines années 1950. Avec un essai introductif de la spécialiste de Warhol Nina Schleif ainsi que des illustrations contemporaines et des photographies de Warhol, cette reproduction méticuleuse offre un regard unique sur un génie en herbe, à l'aube de la renommée mondiale.

Italian Maiolica and Other Early Modern Ceramics in the Courtauld Gallery
This is the first catalogue of the collection of early modern ceramics in the Courtauld. The pieces in the collection showcase brilliantly the skill of potters and pottery painters working at the time of Raphael and Titian. Maiolica is one of the most revealing expressions of Renaissance art. Its extraordinary range of colours retain the vividness that they had when they left the potter's kiln. Italian potters absorbed techniques and shapes from the Islamic world and incorporated ornament and subject matter from the arts of ancient Rome. This new approach to pottery making, combined with the invention of printing, woodcut and engraving, resulted in an extraordinary type of painted pottery, praised by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists for 'surpassing the ancient with its brilliance of glaze and variety of painting'. The collection boasts a magnificent group of vessels made during the high Renaissance, the golden age of Italian maiolica. It includes precious and delicate Deruta lustreware with imagery deriving from Perugino and Raphael, as well as vessels painted in a narrative style of pottery painting known as istoriato. Highlights include vessels depicting episodes taken from the first printed Bibles of the Renaissance. Istoriato maiolica flourished particularly in the lands of the Dukes of Urbino, who promoted this craft by sending painted pottery to prestigious patrons across Europe. Emblems and devices painted on the pottery help us understand that they were meant to be used and enjoyed by the elites in Renaissance society, such as the Medici and other great Tuscan families. The catalogue will include two recent gifts to the Courtauld, a rare tile of the famous patroness of the arts Marchioness Isabella D'Este, and a refined dish painted with the story of Diana and Actaeon. All major Renaissance pottery centres are represented in the collection, including Siena, Faenza and Venice, as well as splendid examples of the mysterious pharmacy jars made at the foot of the mountain of Gran Sasso in the town of Castelli d'Abruzzo. These achievements of the art of pottery in the early modern period are completed by fine examples of Ottoman pottery, as well as examples of Valencian lustreware. Sani's introductory essay on the Victorian collector Thomas Gambier Parry will shed new light on the development of this fascinating collection, making links between Gambier Parry's artistic practice and his collecting and revealing new insights into his taste as a collector. Each detailed entry uncovers a wealth of new information on the provenance of the pieces.

Political Economy and Fiction in the Early Works of Harriet Martineau
This book examines the early work of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), writer, journalist and woman of letters. She became famous in the 1830s with her Illustrations of Political Economy, a series of 25 short novels popularizing the basic principles of Political Economy. Also discussed are her two shorter series of tales from that period, Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated and Illustrations of Taxation. With these works Martineau took part in an intense debate about the role of economic theory in English society. Drawing on such authorities as Adam Smith Martineau offered her readers the possibility of understanding the impact of the Industrial Revolution and its concomitant changes.

Time Sensitivity of Passengers and Market Structure in the Airline Industry
The international airline industry is characterized by radical changes in regulation and firm behavior. Open-sky agreements abolish market entry restrictions, and global strategic alliances replace the government controlled national carriers. With deregulation and the restructuring of firms still in progress, the future design of market structures cannot easily be predicted. Will airlines behave competitively or is there danger of collusion ? Do large networks lead to monopoly supply ? And what are the effects of open skies on consumer welfare ? Roland Fischer answers these questions by developing an economic model that combines traditional monopoly and oligopoly theory with specific features of air transport markets, like hub-and-spoke systems and passengers' valuation of time. Pedagogic Design and Literary Form in the Work of Adalbert Stifter
This investigation brings to light the fundamental significance of literary form as the chief mediator of Stifter's pedagogic endeavour, an aspect so far neglected in Stifter literature. It opposes the widely held view that Stifter's pedagogic incentive is a result of the Austrian revolution of 1848. While Stifter's pedagogic thought stems primarily from his Kremsmünster education in the spirit of Josephinism, it is his increasingly sensitive and respectful involvement of the reader's perceptive powers in conveying the import which, far beyond the expression of pedagogic design in terms of moral and social maxims, reveals Stifter's originality as a pedagogic writer.

Italy and Tito’s Yugoslavia in the Age of International Détente
World War II and East-West confrontation redefined borders between Italy and Yugoslavia, reshaped national frontiers and adversely affected political relations. As a result, major quarrels and disputes arose over territorial claims, demarcation of State boundaries, expulsion of national minorities, and diverging visions on international and domestic politics. It was only in the 1960s and 1970s, during the years of Détente, that rapprochement between Rome and Belgrade became possible and normalization of bilateral relations was attained. Long-lasting territorial disputes, such as the Trieste question, were solved and bilateral relationship greatly improved, so much so that Belgrade became an important asset in Italy's Balkan and Adriatic strategy, while Rome was a sort of bridge between Socialist Yugoslavia and Western Europe. This book is intended to shed light on the process of Italian-Yugoslav normalization and rapprochement, which ultimately brought to the Adriatic Détente. Based on a wide collection of primary sources and documentary materials, it aims to contribute to a better understanding of the history of the Adriatic region, a conflicted European space that had been affected by territorial disputes and ethnic strife for decades during the 20th century.

Italian Subalterns in Egypt between Emigration and Colonialism (1861-1937). Textes en français et anglais
Over the last years, we have witnessed a renewal in the studies on the Italian community which formed in Egypt in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Contrary to the historiographical paradigm that remained dominant for over a century, a novel approach - essentially based on a less ideological interpretation of archival sources - tends to provide a much more complex, less apologetic, and more horizontal reading of the dynamics within and among foreign/migrant communities. This work belongs to this "new" research wave. By rediscovering the originally Gramscian concept of "subaltern classes", it aims at re-centring the context in which the "subalterns" of Italian origin lived and acted as the focus of our interest. At once, it aims at both making such context relevant and disclosing its complexity. It privileges an approach that takes into account different and overlapping categories and social identities, with particular attention to the relationships with the many different local communities.

"Being Russian born I have a strong connection to the ballet scores of Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Stravinsky, and as a result in the Wild Swans, more than in any other work of mine, I allowed myself the freedom to roam through 200 years of musical genres, ranging from Hungarian Operetta through folk music and even including the influences of jazz and popular music, " says Elena Kats-Chernin. The full-length work, which premiered in Sydney in 2003, was written for choreographer Meryl Tankard after the two artists had already worked together for the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games, and became one of the composer's greatest successes. Many excerpts in various arrangements have a concert life of their own today - including the world-renowned Eliza Aria. Arranged by the composer in 2004 for violin and piano after the original orchestral version, the half-hour suite comprises ten characteristic movements : Green Leaf Prelude, Eliza Aria, Brothers, Wicked Witch (piano solo), Magic Spell Tango, Glow Worms, Darkness of the Forest, Eliza and the Prince, Mute Princess, Transformation. Le portrait Klesch, par Titien, de Guidobaldo II avec son fils Francesco Maria représente le duc d'Urbino dans ses pleins pouvoirs de commandant suprême des troupes papales avec son héritier à ses côtés. Ce rare double portrait en pied vient seulement d'être attribué à Titien après avoir entrepris des analyses et une restauration minutieuses qui révèlent une belle peinture au style "non finito" avec de superbes touches d'empâtement totalement typiques au maître. Tout ceci est illustré et développé dans ce nouveau livre. Titian provided portraits for the greatest men and women of Europe, Charles V and Philip II of Spain primary among them. For years the Klesch portrait was dismissed as a workshop product - partly because poor condition hid its true quality, but also because it was not believed that Titian could have deigned to create one for Guidobaldo, whose father Guidobaldo della Rovere (1514-1574) and family had a long history of patronizing the artist. Recent research, however, has thrown Guidobaldo's geopolitical significance into relief. He was supreme commander of Venice, the Papal States and then Spain. He sent thousands of soldiers to the major conflicts of his day, particularly the defense of Malta (1565) and the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and his engineers were sought throughout Europe for their ingenuity. In this volume full of new research, Ian Verstegen reveals that Guidobaldo was not peripheral but central to Italian politics and was regarded at several points in history as a key figure who could bring peace or who could influence major conflicts on the Italian peninsula, particularly the War of Siena, and then Pope Paul IV's offensive war against Spain. Anne-Marie Eze gives the first comprehensive examination of the painting's provenance, outlining the portrait's vicissitudes and reception at different moments in its near 500-year history, reexamining received wisdom about its past ownership, and presenting new documentary evidence to expand on and fill gaps in our knowledge of its whereabouts. Finally, Matthew Hayes and Ian Kennedy reflect on the technique, date, recent conservation, and authorship of the painting, proving it to be a masterpiece that only the great Titian could have created.

Et, chaque fois, la même passion pour raconter les premiers moments. De là est née l'idée de ce livre. Nous sommes allés cueillir des histoires pour en faire un bouquet de vies. D'abord, dans le cercle de nos proches et de nos amis, qu'ils soient anonymes ou célèbres. Mais, à peine achevé, un récit en appelait un autre. Chacun connaissait quelqu'un dont la rencontre était étonnante, émouvante, incroyable, stupéfiante... Rarement enquête fut plus plaisante à mener. Rarement livre plus agréable à écrire. Ourse & Lapin : Un intru dans la vallée
Le printemps est arrivé et tous les habitants de la forêt se réjouissent... Enfin, presque tous. PANG PANG PANG ! Lapin, toujours aussi ronchon, ne supporte pas ce bruit. Qui ose lui casser les oreilles ? Ourse, sa nouvelle amie, va lui apprendre à observer le monde qui l'entoure et à l'accepter tel qu'il est.

Lofts
Lofts nous offre un tableau complet de l'une des aventures architecturales les plus étonnantes de notre siècle : non seulement on a assisté à la transformation et au réemploi d'anciennes constructions industrielles à des fins d'habitation, mais également à de véritables bouleversements dans la philosophie de la vie domestique. Dans une époque où l'on prône le réemploi des anciens bâtiments (voir chez le même éditeur, L'Architecture transformée), il était inévitable que l'on songe à transformer d'anciennes usines, souvent dans le centre-ville ou proches du centre-ville, en lieux de vie. Et comme souvent, ce sont les artistes qui ont lancé le mouvement - pour la simple raison, avant tout, qu'ils étaient à la recherche de vastes volumes à bas prix, et que seules ces anciennes structures correspondaient à leur désir comme à leur budget. De plus, pour tout esprit rebelle - artistiquement ou politiquement -, il y avait sans doute une certaine satisfaction à mener une existence en tout point à contre-courant du modèle bourgeois classique. Mais on s'est aussi aperçu que ces grands volumes pouvaient être agréables à vivre et présenter un charme particulier, en dépit de quelques inconvénients (la difficulté à chauffer, notamment). Et c'est ainsi que, nécessité faisant loi, s'est créé ce qui est à la fois un style d'habitation (avant tout urbain) et un mode de vie qui, marginal et contestataire à ses débuts, n'a pas tardé à être récupéré par toute une frange de la population, soit par goût, soit par snobisme.
Outre une histoire du mouvement et de la culture du loft, cet ouvrage nous présente une belle palette d'exemples concrets de ce type de lieux de vie, photographies et commentaires à l'appui, qui donne un panorama très complet de leur diversité, de leur ingéniosité et des solutions, qu'ils apportent chaque fois à des problèmes particuliers.
Par la qualité de la présentation et des commentaires des deux auteurs, comme par le choix de sa documentation photographique, Lofts est à la fois une étude remarquable sur la naissance d'un genre et un document sur la manière dont il s'est développé et épanoui. Tous les amateurs d'architecture devraient y trouver leur bonheur.
