The Book That Grew

This book studies the historical, religious and political concerns of the Iraqi Shi‘i community as interpreted by the members of that community who now live in the United Kingdom and Ireland, following the 2003-2010 war and occupation in Iraq. It opens up a creative space to explore dialogue between Islam and the West, looking at issues such as intra-Muslim conflict, Muslim-Christian relations, the changing face of Arab Islam and the experience of Iraq in the crossfire of violence and terrorism – all themes which are currently emerging in preaching and in discussion among Iraqi Shi‘a in exile. The book's aim is to explore possibilities for dialogue with Iraqi Shi‘i communities who wish, in the midst of political, social and religious transition, to engage with elements of Christian theology such as pastoral and liberation theology.

The present volume is a collection of studies devoted to major issues in contemporary syntax and semantics : in particular, argument structure, ellipsis, negation and scope. The papers included, which represent a number of formally rigorous contemporary frameworks, bring out new facts from a large variety of languages as well as novel solutions to a broad range of analytic puzzles. Part One illustrates the major ways in which argument structure is used and conceptualized. Part Two provides new perspectives on ellipsis, applying concepts and tools developed for focus, questions and quantification. Part Three introduces a number of novel proposals for the representation of scope, considerably enlarging the empirical domain of scope relations. These studies are unusual in that they combine an enthusiasm for detailed syntactic and semantic data and a serious concern for formal rigor. They discuss data from a wide variety of languages, including Japanese, Bulgarian, French, Greek, English, Italian, German, Hungarian, Inuit and Western Austronesian languages. The main themes of the book include negation, argument structure, ellipsis, indefinites, telicity, presuppositions, modality and quantification.

Modern relationship researchers have revealed that scripts concerning pair bonding rituals are actually constituted in a manner so as to leave little to chance when romantic attachments are formed, intensify, and sometimes dissolve. In this introductory text, the authors discuss the basis of relationship scripts, emotions, imagery, and physiology of relationships including romance, friendship, work associates, mentors, and Facebook friends. They argue that people's expectations for relational development influence their communication, faith, and commitment in relationships. Misconstruing sexual or flirtatious intent, for example, is derived from having different scripts about attraction. The book also discusses abusive relationships including characteristics of abusers, stalking, and verbal and physical aggression. Designed for classes in communication and relationships, interpersonal communication, intrapersonal communication, and communication and cognition, as well as across disciplines in psychology, sociology, family studies, and social work, this text provides a comprehensive overview of how scripts and communication are used in relationships. In fact, the construction of a federal state inevitably involves the restoration of African historical consciousness. There is no national and federal identity without a common language. The unification of Africa will only be possible if it takes the measure of its linguistic unification issue. To a lesser extent but like Cheikh Anta Diop in his book titled the Cultural Unity, I was animated throughout this heuristic by the idea that only the true knowledge of the past can maintain the consciousness and the feeling of a historical continuity essential to the consolidation of a nation for the purpose of building a multinational state in line with its past. Like Cheikh Anta Diop, I build my sureness on the legitimate idea that a people who lost a significant part of their historical memory must engage in the investigation of their past in every possible way. This investigation can take the contours of a reconnection with its past through so-called old languages. But a people can not live only with by merely repeating of what others tell them about themselves. The investigation through its linguistic past allows especially a direct knowledge of oneself. In addition to the fact that this knowledge simply highlights its weaknesses, it allows also to become aware by an introspective and therefore reflective of its real abilities and strengths. It structures being and the consciousness of being to resist any form of servile and degrading ideology. This quest for the past, not founded on blind passion but objectivity, nourishes a healthy ambition for a real universalism. To know one's past is already to project one's future. To know one's past is to give oneself the capacity to be able to bring to others in a perspective of giving and receiving. To know one's past is to refuse intellectual guardianship and wait-and-seeism. To know one's past is to be reborn.

Protector as well as defender of the Congo Basin, he receives the blows and the backlash from mafia networks who wish to illegally exploit the huge ressources of this part of the Earth. It reveals to the donor community climatic conditions and to all human civilization the opportunities offered by the Congo (ecotourism, development of the pharmaceutical industry and the market Common Forest of Central African Countries). Peat bogs constitute for the Congo Basin the largest terrestrial reserve of organic carbon. They store twice as much carbon as other forests in the world. He calls on the conscience of climate hinders, because the peat bog is an essential source of ecological stability, a precious reserve of carbon and the cradle of unique flora and fauna to the world and its survival also requires the integration of local communities' indigenous peoples through sustainable projects. This book is a reference tool for understanding and analyzing the basin of Congo, its natural wealth, its legal and institutional framework, in the dynamics of climate-political leadership and its myriad opportunities for the planet. As a result, the author believes that the achievement of these objectives is dependent on climate-political leadership that the Congo Basin space exerts in the concert nations. In recent years, growing concerns over the strength of South Africa's democracy appear to indicate a population increasingly disillusioned and dissatisfied with the quality of its implementation. This book assesses the quality of democracy in South Africa after 20 years of democracy in order to ascertain whether or not this growing perception is valid. Since the inception of democracy in 1994 there have been countless procedural and substantive improvements in addressing historically entrenched political, social and economic problems ; however, there are serious issues that have emerged relating to the quality of democratic implementation in South Africa. Two existing analytical frameworks of democracy assessment, International IDEA's State of Democracy framework and Leonardo Morlino's tool for empirical research on democratic qualities, TODEM, are utilised to assess the quality of South Africa's rule of law and institutional capacity ; representative and accountable government ; civil society and popular participation ; and freedom and equality after 20 years of democracy. The book concludes cautiously that while South Africa faces many serious and threatening potholes in the road to a fully successful democracy, there is nevertheless much to applaud.

The work shows the usefulness and limitation of modern logic in the study of traditional metaphysical problems. As is the usual case in all criticism of analytic philosophers against traditional philosophy, word usage must be limited to what the human mind can know. The notion of timeless knowledge for example contradicts our normal mode of word usage and cannot serve as adequate in reference to knowledge be it that of man or of God. If timeless knowledge applied to divine mode of knowing then there cannot be human freedom.

Julien VERMEULEN : Hugo Claus à New York (1959) In 1959-1960, Hugo Claus spent six months in the US, Mexico and Cuba. In the course of his trip he wrote down a number of impressions and experiences which he later turned into a cycle of poems, entitled "Reportage" (1961). In terms of contents and style these poems differ from his previous work. Claus now uses a style which is less hermetical : apart from this remarkable transparency, a wide range of ironic expressions, ambivalent idioms, contrasting registers and playful characterisations constitute a lexicological diversity. The great number of assonances and the use of non-literary text registers also characterize these poems. In this way this cycle anticipates later work in which Claus systematically applies diverse collage techniques. The poems "N. Y. 1" and "N. Y. 2" are also an exceptional testimony of the feelings of isolation and vulnerability of the lyrical "I". In 1959-1960 bracht Hugo Claus zes maanden door in de VS, Mexico en Cuba. Tijdens zijn verblijf noteerde hij enkele indrukken en ervaringen die hij later in de gedichtenreeks "Reportage" (1961) uitwerkte. Inhoudelijk en stilistisch wijkt deze poëzie af van zijn vroeger werk. L'engagement artistique de Hugo Claus dans les années soixante In the spring of 1968 Hugo Claus was officially charged with public indecency. The fact that he had staged three naked men in his play Masscheroen, could not be tolerated by to the conservative judiciary in Flanders. The lawsuit caused a great fuss within the artistic milieu : art and literature had regularly been censored and something had to be done. Inspired by the activist élan of May '68, Claus and his colleagues chose to act upon their artistic commitment. Through cheerful happenings and poetic protest evenings they fought for the autonomy of art and literature. In het voorjaar van 1968 werd Hugo Claus aangeklaagd wegens openbare zedenschennis. In zijn toneelstuk Masscheroen had hij drie naakte mannen laten optreden en dat kon volgens de conservatieve rechterlijke macht in Vlaanderen niet door de beugel. De zaak leidde tot veel ophef binnen het artistieke milieu : kunst en literatuur werden eind jaren zestig veelvuldig gecensureerd en dat werd niet langer geaccepteerd. Aangestoken door het activistische elan van mei '68 besloten Claus en zijn collega's zich artistiek geëngageerd te tonen. Door middel van vrolijke happenings en poëtische protestavonden bevochten zij de autonomie van kunst en literatuur. Pieter VERSTRAETEN : Le corps du Christ. Le roman A propos de Dédé et le catholicisme Hugo Claus's short novel Omtrent Deedee [With regard to Deedee], which appeared in 1963, can be read in a variety of ways. In general, two slightly antagonistic interpretative models have been dominant so far : whereas the early literary analysis by Julien Weverbergh focuses on the symbolic dimension of the story, a commentator such as Bert Vanheste emphasizes the novel's connection with contemporary social discussions, such as the debates on the democratization of Catholic faith in the context of Vaticanum II (1962-1965). In this article I want to further develop the latter perspective by reading the book primarily as a commentary on Catholic faith, understood in its institutional as well as its ideological dimensions. In particular, I focus on the kind of priesthood the main character Deedee is embodying, on the relation between the priest Deedee and the young homosexual Claude, who seems to represent an alternative kind of priesthood, and on the process of transubstantiation, which plays a major role in all this. Finally, I relate the motif of transubstantiation to Claus's conception of meaning and symbolism. It appears that the religious sacrament as well as the signifying process are based on the interaction between the concrete and material on the one hand and the abstract and ideal on the other. In the end, in Omtrent Deedee, both categories are unmasked as mere social constructs, failing to do what they promise : restoring an original, sacral union or wholeness. Van Hugo Claus' korte roman Omtrent Deedee, verschenen in 1963, zijn heel verschillende interpretaties mogelijk. Grosso modo staan daarbij twee verschillende lectuurmodellen tegenover elkaar. Terwijl de vroege analyse van Julien Weverbergh vooral inzet op de symbolische dimensie van het verhaal, vraagt iemand als Bert Vanheste expliciet aandacht voor de betrokkenheid van de roman op contemporaine maatschappelijke problemen, zoals de discussies rond de democratisering van het katholieke geloof die plaatsvinden in de context van Vaticanum II. In dit artikel wil ik dat tweede perspectief verder uitwerken door Omtrent Deedee in de eerste plaats te lezen als een commentaar op het katholieke geloof, zowel op de institutionele als op de ideologische dimensie ervan. Ik focus daarbij op de aard van het priesterschap van het hoofdpersonage Deedee, op de relatie tussen de geestelijke Deedee en de jonge homoseksueel Claude, die een alternatieve priesterrol op zich neemt, en op het sacrale proces van de transsubstantiatie, dat bij dit alles een cruciale rol lijkt te spelen. Tenslotte verbind ik het motief van de transsubstantiatie met Claus' visie op betekenis en symboliek. Zowel het religieuze sacrament als het proces van betekenisgeving zijn immers gebaseerd op de interacties tussen het concrete en materiële enerzijds en het abstracte en ideële anderzijds. Finaal worden beide categorieën in Omtrent Deedee ontmaskerd als louter sociale constructies die er niet in slagen hun belofte waar te maken en een oorspronkelijke, sacrale eenheid en heelheid te herstellen. Tom SINTOBIN : Raconter en bafouillant, bafouiller en racontant. Traumatisme et narrativité chez Hugo Claus In this article two novels by Hugo Claus are analysed from the perspective of Trauma theory : Desire (1978) and The sorrow of Belgium (1983). Trauma destroys an individual's life-narrative and results in a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In Desire it is Didi that seems to suffer from it : she lost her human identity and her awareness of time, she is barely able to speek - which means that she has lost the plot that can give her life meaning and coherence. The reader is never told what exactly is the matter : all he gets are flashes, which are not sufficient to tell him the whole story. Moreover, he is confronted with the fact that the language of the novel is very ambiguous. These two characteristics - the unability to get to a fullblown story and the loss of language - the reader shares with a PTSD-patient, which suggests that this novel has a performative aspect : the reader lives through the same drama as that of the characters. In The sorrow of Belgium, uncle Omer is confronted with a malfunctioning language and ability to narrate. His problem manifests itself in repetition and in misunderstandings due to the ambiguity of words. The reader encounters exactly the same problem at the end of the novel, when a passage that seemed rather superficial at first sight in reality turns out to be full of meaning. However, there are characters in this novel whom one would expect to be traumatised that nevertheless do not show the typical characteristics. Above all the father, Staf, talks endlessly about the terrible things that happened to him, even so much that the members of his family are no longer interested. The feeling of the "surplus" of narratives, that are as a consequence not healing any more but aim at hiding something, is a feeling shared by the reader while he is reading this strange novel, which gets in its turn a performative aspect. In dit artikel worden twee romans van Hugo Claus, Het verlangen (1978) en Het verdriet van België (1983) bestudeerd vanuit het perspectief van traumastudies. Daarbij wordt een trauma gedefinieerd als datgene wat het levensnarratief van een individu vernietigt, met een Post Traumatic Stress Disorder tot gevolg. In Het verlangen blijkt Didi's pathologie daar nogal wat kenmerken van te hebben : ze is haar menselijke identiteit kwijt, haar tijdsbesef is ontregeld, ze kan amper nog spreken - zij heeft dus niet langer de beschikking over een levensnarratief dat haar bestaan zinvol en coherent kan maken. De lezer verneemt echter nooit precies wat er aan de hand is : hij krijgt slechts flitsen te zien en komt niet tot een sluitend verhaal. Bovendien wordt hij ermee geconfronteerd dat de taal van de roman wel heel meerzinnig wordt. Deze beide kenmerken - het onvermogen om tot een verhaal te komen en het verlies van taal - deelt de lezer met een PTSD-patiënt, zodat het verhaal in overdrachtelijke zin performatief is geworden : de lezer ondervindt het drama van de personages aan den lijve. Ook in Het verdriet van België komt er een personage voor wiens taal en verhalend vermogen hapert : Nonkel Omer. Zijn aandoening uit zich onder meer in herhaling en in misverstanden door dubbelzinnige woorden en blijkt ook de lezer parten te spelen wanneer die zich tegen het einde van de roman met een ogenschijnlijk anekdotische maar in werkelijkheid uitermate beladen passage geconfronteerd ziet. Nochtans zijn er ook personages waarvan men zou kunnen aannemen dat ze getraumatiseerd zijn zonder dat ze de kenmerken van een PTSD vertonen : vooral vader Staf vertelt honderduit over wat hem is overkomen, zelfs in die mate dat zijn verhalen niet meer interessant gevonden worden door zijn huisgenoten. Het gevoel van de overdaad aan verhalen, die niet langer heilzaam zijn maar iets verbergen, maakt zich ook van de lezer meester bij zijn lectuur van deze vreemde roman. Het verdriet van België heeft zodoende op zijn beurt iets performatiefs. Dirk VAN HULLE : Claus et la narratologie exogénétique. La cognition externe (extended mind) et les notes de lecture autour du Chagrin des Belges This article combines genetic criticism with a post-Cartesian approach to cognitive narratology, notably to the examination of literary evocations of the fictional mind. The case study is the genesis of Hugo Claus' novel Het verdriet van België. The exogenetic analysis of two extant notebooks shows how the author's reading notes contribute not just to the fictional cosmology of the novel, but also to the cognitive cosmology of the characters' 'extended' minds. The article argues that for Claus, as for many twentieth-century authors, the materiality of the avant-texte served as a cognitive model for the evocation of the workings of the fictional mind. Dit artikel combineert tekstgenetisch onderzoek met een post-Cartesiaanse benadering van de cognitieve narratologie, in het bijzonder het onderzoek naar vormen van literaire bewustzijnsrepresentatie. De gevalstudie is de genese van Hugo Claus' roman Het verdriet van België. Literarische Bilder aus dem französischen Exil Alongside her journalistic undertakings, literary works by Anna Seghers left trajectories of her residence as an immigrant in France between the years 1933-1941. In her literary works, the writer often depicted in a metaphorical way the world of immigration experiences : Sense of instability, isolation, life intimidations and also consciousness of replication of the immigrant' destiny. She brought a universal literary vision that corresponded to the biblical tradition and the world of the Greek and Roman mythologies. The author of this article, based on the selected literary works of Anna Seghers that were created in France, catalogues the universal experiences of the existence of the human kind, that in Seghers' works become mythical. Les textes littéraires d'Anna Seghers, qui complètent son activité publicistique, où elle décrit d'une manière métaphorique ses expériences d'expatriée, en disent long sur les années de son exil en France (1939-1941). La précarité, l'isolement, le danger de mort et la conscience de réitération de l'existence d'exilé font naître une vision littéraire universelle qui puise tant dans la tradition biblique que dans les mythologies grecque et romaine. A travers les textes littéraires retenus, issus de la période française, l'auteur de la présente contribution tente de concrétiser cette expérience atemporelle de l'existence humaine à laquelle Seghers donne une dimension mythique.

The objects of cultural transfers are innumerable. Their study is particularly important to understanding the medieval Norman worlds and their multiple interconnections with the Scandinavian world, the British Isles, Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean. While examining the processes of transmission, reception, adaptation, adoption, or rejection, this book highlights how these dynamics influenced cultures between the eighth and twelfth centuries. Various examples of both material (embroidery ; clothing accessories ; iron artefacts ; coins ; manuscripts ; funeral monuments ; sculptures, etc.) and immaterial objects (craftsmanship ; literary models ; language ; religious and burial practices ; ideology of power ; oath-taking, etc.) are studied, including some emblematic ‘monuments' of the Norman worlds (the Bayeux Tapestry ; the mosaics on the floor of Otranto Cathedral). Particular attention is given to presenting these objects in a context in which their reinterpretation in different socio-cultural environments could be better understood. The book also questions the role and the significance of the actors of cultural transfers (aristocratic elites ; churchmen ; merchants ; craftsmen ; authors ; copyists ; etc.), considering their status or their function, as well as their aptitude to carry transfers. It sheds light on relations and networks that have been thus far relatively unknown, and on the circulation of models that consists of a multitude of objects and productions. Finally, it contributes to the exploration of the contacts between different populations and the construction of their interactions.

Two long sets of scientific notes were made by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. Those transcribed here are concerned with natural history, and although in 1839 he drew on them quite extensively in writing his famous " Journal of Researches ", neither they nor his geology notes have previously been published. He was a superb observer, and recorded vividly and accurately his first impressions of the appearance and behaviour of the wide range of animals, from ants to ostriches, encountered during his travels. Often he performed little experiments on the creatures that he captured, and he was never happy until he had exhaustively explored the why and wherefore of every one of his observations. During the long periods on board ship, he carried out a thorough analysis of hitherto unrecognised features of the internal anatomy of a variety of marine invertebrates, and made elegant pencil drawings of them under his dissecting microscope. The volume also includes his lists of 1 500 specimens preserved in Spirits of Wine, and some 3 500 not in Spirits, with impeccably accurate cross references to the main notes. Although his notes were made strictly for his own use, and were often highly technical, they were well written throughout, and contain many highly readable passages. Only towards the very end of the voyage were his first doubts about the immutability of species consciously pressed, but here are to be found the first seeds of his theory of evolution, and of the important new fields of behavioural and ecological study of which he was one of the principal founders.

Modern scholarship often discusses Roman women in terms of their difference from their male counterparts, frequently defining them as ‘other'. This book shows how Roman male writers at the turn of the first century actually described women as not so different from men : the same qualities and abilities pertaining to the domains of parenthood, intellect and morals are ascribed by writers to women as well as to men. There are two voices, however : a traditional, ideal voice and an individual, realistic voice. This creates a duality of representations of women, which recurs across literary genres and reflects a duality of mentality. How can we interpret the paradoxical information about Roman women given by the male-authored texts ? How does this duality of mentality inform us about gender roles and gender hierarchy ? This work analyses well-known, as well as overlooked, passages from the writings of Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, Suetonius, Quintilian, Statius, Martial and Juvenal and sheds new light on Roman views of women and their abilities, on the notions of private and public and on conjugal relationships. In the process, the famous sixth satire of Juvenal is revisited and its topic reassessed, providing further insights into the complex issues of gender roles, marriage and emotions. By contrasting representations of women across a broad spectrum of literary genres, this book provides consistent findings that have wide significance for the study of Latin literature and the social history of the late first and early second centuries.

Parents who come from different language backgrounds often hope that their children will be able to speak the languages of both their parents. In families where this is the goal, the ‘one parent-one language' approach (Ronjat, 1913) is widely used. The ‘one parent-one language' approach is relatively effective in promoting active bilingualism among young children in a society where there is little support for the minority language. However, there is a general perception that maintenance of the minority language into middle childhood and beyond is difficult as during this period children's contacts with the outside world expand and the input in the majority language increases. This book examines the sociolinguistic environment and the nature of parental input for children from Japanese-Australian families, who have been exposed to Japanese and English through the ‘one parent-one language' approach in Australia. The research on which the book is based identifies factors which account for successful and unsuccessful cases of Japanese language maintenance of children from those families. The major part of this study involves discourse analysis of the conversations between four Japanese mothers and their primary school aged children based on audio-recordings over a period of 21 months. This qualitative approach is complemented by a quantitative study interviewing 25 Japanese mothers about their children's language experience.

This book argues that the Indian ascetic traditions have two independent sources, the one Vedic, the other non-Vedic.
