Polygyny in Pre-christian Bafut and New Moral Theological Perspectives
Polygyny, commonly called polygamy, has been one of the main obstacles to evangelisation in Africa. After Vatican II many theologians began to question the traditional church policy towards polygamists and their wives who, after receiving the faith, asked for baptism. The two main solutions proposed were the baptism and the life catechumenate solutions. The present work studies polygyny in pre-christian Bafut and traces the history of the problem of polygynous converts from 1201. It suggests that the real obstacle to their baptism is polysex, not poly-marriage. In the concluding chapter, a solution is offered to polysex, according to which the polygamist, after baptism, becomes a special kind of monogamist.

Paul's Sexual and Marital Ethics in 1 Corinthians 7 : An African-Cameroonian Perspective provides readers with an innovative interpretation of Paul's pastoral and pedagogical approach and solutions to the multifaceted ethical problems presented to him by the Corinthian community, revealing a wide-ranging, complex, and flexible decision-making process. Alice Yafeh's analysis also illuminates two different evaluations of the same ethical problem may be simultaneously relevant where operating assumptions diverge : first as a community in pursuance of the goal of undistracted devotion to the Lord, and, second, as individual members who must pursue that goal within the specific lifestyles in which they have been called. The author argues that Paul's pastoral and theological approach, which is deeply motivated by a desire to inspire faithful Christian living and witness, can serve as a new model for evaluating pre-conversion polygyny ; a model that is oriented toward positive and substantive change in the lives of women and children. Consequently, the implication of Paul's approach and judgments for contemporary Christian communities suggests the same believing community may adopt different ways of faithfully living out the practical implications of Christian view of marriage extended by Paul in 1 Corinthians 7.

Is there no way of bringing the two together to avoid any form of duplication or multiplication of rite ? More so because the Church has always implicitly recognised matrimonial institution as a cultural product. The answer to the above question is located in the whole issue of inculturation. A process that successfully flourished in the Western civilisation and consequently influenced the teaching of the Church on marriage. The answer to our question seeks to establish a marriage rite where couples will genuinely experience the happy marriage between culture and Church. A marriage rite that will fulfil both the traditional and Christian demands.

The dissertation investigates the work of the Project in Partnership between Black and White which is based in Birmingham, England. The focus of this experiment in theological education is dialogical and intercultural within the British socio-cultural setting. This programme is compared with the Alternative Theological and Staff Development Experiment of Colgate Divinity School in Rochester, New York ; and the Black Church Experience, the Research in Black Church Studies and Research Study in Oral History at Garrett-Evangelical Seminary, Evanston, Illinois in USA. This study further probes into the trends in general education in South Africa and their influence on the socio-political dynamics and how these in turn influence education for mission. The research analyses these approaches in the light of the work done by the Programme on Theological Education of the World Council of Chruches. The enquiry points to the need to re-think our approach to theological education in all our pluralistic societies.

This collection of critical essays anchors itself in the Indian Ocean and explores the multiple ways dynamic exchanges have shaped this multilingual region of the world, from India to the Mascarene Islands to Southern Africa. Borders, edges and third spaces are revisited through the notion of the ecotone, a transitional zone between two ecosystems. If the term has primarily been used by biologists and ecologists, the metaphorical angle proves to be fruitful as it authorizes transdisciplinary approaches and empowers fresh perspectives. In French and in English, this volume aims to contribute to scholarship already published across various disciplinary fields and to participate in the development of Indoceanic studies. The authors of the volume rethink those ecotonal sites that are spaces of frictions as much as spaces of fusion. Les essais critiques réunis dans ce volume prennent leur ancrage dans l'océan Indien et explorent les multiples façons dont la dynamique des échanges a formé cette région multilingue, de l'Inde aux Mascareignes et en Afrique australe. Frontières, lisières et tiers-espaces sont revisités à travers la notion d'écotone, une zone de transition entre deux écosystèmes. Si le terme a été surtout utilisé par les biologistes et les écologistes, l'angle métaphorique s'avère particulièrement fertile en ce qu'il autorise des approches transdisciplinaires et rend possibles des perspectives nouvelles. En anglais et en français, ce volume vise à enrichir la recherche déjà publiée dans plusieurs champs disciplinaires et à participer au développement des études indo-océaniques. Toward a Contextualized Theology for the Third World
This study traces the origin of Jesus' Name Pentecostalism in Mexico to determine its distinctives as a Mexican movement. The movement has historically been called "Jesus Only" or "Oneness". While focusing on the Iglesia Apostólica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús, Iglesia Evangélica Cristiana Espiritual, La Luz del Mundo, and El Buen Pastor are briefly discussed. The Oneness doctrine of the Trinity is examined to determine its adequacy as a trinitarian theological model. The assertion is made that Western Christianity must accept and promote the use of alternative theological models in non-Western contexts in order to assist the Christians of the Third World to develop meaningful contextualized theology for their own cultures.

Vatican II opened the doors of the Roman Catholic Church for official theological dialogue with "separated brethren." The rise of the neo-Pentecostal movement and charismatic renewal caused the doors of the historical Pentecostals to open toward Christians in the mainline churches. This book discusses the historical precedents of the Vatican/Pentecostal Dialogue and reviews the ten-years Dialogue (1972-1982), with special attention given to the second five years. The implications of this Dialogue for ecumenism is also discussed. Volume Two contains all the documents from the second quinquennium, including the 16 theological papers and final report.

Christian Boltanski est né à Paris en 1944. Il est aujourd'hui l'une des figures incontournables de l'histoire de l'art contemporain français et international, auteur d'une oeuvre de référence qui a su toucher un large public. Depuis la fin des années 1960, sa pratique artistique polymorphe traite d'une manière singulière des thèmes de l'enfance, de l'identité, de la mort et du temps. A partir d'un vocabulaire formel et de matériaux simples - photographies, archives, vêtements -, il met en scène la rencontre entre mémoire personnelle et mémoire collective, faisant notamment revivre le souvenir des tragédies du XXe siècle. Son oeuvre, qui se déploie des arts plastiques au spectacle, offre une réflexion sur le statut de l'image, du témoignage et de l'art. L'essai rétrospectif de Catherine Grenier, historienne de l'art, directrice adjointe du Centre Pompidou, revient sur quarante années de création, du premier atelier sous les combles jusqu'à Monumenta au Grand Palais, retraçant le parcours d'un artiste profondément humain et humaniste. Jean-Hubert Martin, historien de l'art, porte un regard personnel sur Chance, exposée au pavillon français de la biennale de Venise 2011 et sur les récents projets insulaires de l'artiste. Hymns: The Making and Shaping of a Theology for the Whole People of God
The theological potential of hymns has never been fully exploited. This study shows how hymns communicate theology and enable those without a formal theological education to enter into theological debate. A nineteenth century collection of English hymns and some contemporary Bemba hymns from the Zambian Copperbelt are examined and compared, within their theological, cultural and social contexts, to discover their response to death, judgement, heaven and hell. From this comparison and a study of how hymns are used in these churches, a model emerges whereby hymns can be used to make and shape theology. This model is observed in a Zambian parish and is also shown in practice in an English parish. Finally, there is a reflection on the implications of this model for Missiology and Ecclesiology showing, among other things, the need for a radical reassessment of the relationship between professional theologians and the rest of the Church.

Leaf structure is central to plant function, and the implications of this, both to the plant itself and beyond, at the ecosystem level, are now becoming fully realized. This book addresses variation in leaf structure in detail, with reviews and analyses on specific aspects, and in so doing it encapsulates the state of current knowledge in this important area. The impact of leaf structure on plant furiction is certainly far-reaching - it is intimately connected with the rate at which the leaf fixes carbon dioxide, the rate at which the plant can grow and the efficiency with which the plant conserves nutrients. It is therefore related to plant performance in different habitats, and can be used to characterize species, to define functional groups and even to predict the response of species to varying environmental conditions. structure of component species on community productivity and nutrient cycling is an area of intense current research. The synergy created through the various approaches to leaf structure discussed in this book has produced a unique resource, from which it is possible to identify those issues and challenges that will be the most vital for the future.

La princesse Gwen aime la chevaleresse Bridget qui l'aime bien en retour. Art, le promis de Gwen aime quant à lui le doux Gabriel, le futur monarque et le frère de Gwen, qui ne sait pas si par hasard il ne serait pas aussi très attiré par le fantasque Art. Oups ! Ce n'est pas ainsi que c'est censé se passer. Il y a à l'évidence un énorme problème au royaume de Camelot, car Gwen et Art doivent se marier et avoir beaucoup d'enfants pour le bien du royaume... Or, Gwen et Art ne s'aiment pas, mais vraiment pas du tout. Comment ce petit monde va-t-il se débrouiller pour être heureux et ne pas détruire Camelot ?

The Moral Ideals of Care and Respect
Philosophers are in the process of constructing an environmental ethics theory intended to govern human conduct toward nature. Relying on moral philosophy or ecological theory to generate normative principles, philosophers have failed to pay adequate attention to human psychology. To address the question of responsible relations with nature via insights and methods from moral psychology means to validate environmental ethics theory with real-life human functioning. It also means broadening the psychological study of morality to include nature. An interpretive analysis of the study participants' moral deliberations and experiences revealed the moral ideals of "care" and "respect." These contrast with the moral ideal of "justice" which dominates environmental ethics discourse.

This bold work asks whether traditional Christian sexual morality, with its emphasis on sexual abstinence outside of heterosexual marriage, is harmful. Appealing to sociological studies, anthropological theories, and contemporary theological ethics, Hartwig develops a model of sexual virtue around the concept of a poetics of intimacy and applies this model to particular challenges faced by the divorced, married couples, gay men and lesbians, single adults, and people with mental and developmental disabilities. He concludes that mandated long-term and lifelong sexual abstinence for those outside heterosexual marriage is not only harmful, but compromises many features of Christian morality.

Métissage in New France and Canada 1508 to 1886
This book deals with métissage in New France and Canada in the period 1508 to 1886. Métissage is understood as a syncretistic process of cultural, social and political encounter and mixture of ethnic groups that resulted from mixed marriages and relationships. Those led to the rise of the Métis people in North America, which were distinguished as French-speaking Métis and English-speaking Halfbreeds. The process of mixture began in 1508, when first Indians were shipped to France with the intention to use them as multipliers of French culture on their return to the colony. In 1886, the Act of Savages legally distinguished between "Indians" and "Metis", thus marking the beginning of a mixed-blood identity in Canada that was differentiated from neighbouring Whites, Indians and Inuit. The theoretical approach of the history of concepts is employed in the longue durée to show the variance throughout four centuries.

The Christian theology of religions at present faces a crisis. What precisely is the task of the theology of religions ? Does it merely consist in interpreting the non-Christian religions as steps, phases or contributions in the light of Christianity ? Has one from the theological side conceded the maximum to the non-Christian religions by acknowledging them as anonymous Christianity (Karl Rahner)? This study is an exploration on how one shall liberate the religion of the other from anonymity : how one shall leave the other with his/her own name. En 1937 Claude Saint-Cyr qui a récemment inauguré sa maison rencontre le jeune Christian Dior qui n'est pas encore le couturier mondialement connu. A la suite de cette rencontre, le jeune prodige propose des dessins à Claude Saint-Cyr qui en sélectionne une centaine et s'en inspire pour ses collections.
