Sculpteurs

Standing women of Venice/Femmes debout de Venise ; Standing black woman of Venice/Femme noire debout de Venise. Edition bilingue français-anglais

Barbara Chase-Riboud is a French-American sculptor, poet and novelist. She lives in Paris. She met Alberto Giacometti in the ? early 1960s. Throughout the decades, both artists have traced different paths as sculptors - as man and woman artists too. Their dialogue rests on points of contact : the work on matter and bronze, a passion for Ancient Egypt and writing. This confrontation between Giacometti, whom one considers as "streamlined" and classical, and Chase-Riboud, "tangible" and baroque, also reveals a shared passionate attention to the representation of the body. This exhibition, the rst in France for Barbara Chase-Riboud since 1974, offers us the gaze of a woman artist on the oeuvre of Alberto Giacometti with whom she is in sympathy.

The 40-odd studies revised for this volume explore the sometimes harmonious, often contentious relationship between French theatre and Christianity. Most focus on rather ancient works, from the Middle Ages to the era of classicism, but the 20th century is glimpsed at through the works of Péguy, Claudel and Mauriac.

Civil Society versus State In Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese Tradition Proceeding of the American-European Symposium, Paris, May 29-31 The study of the social nature of man has been given a new dimension by work like those of Jürgen Habermas that no longer simply analyze the relations between the individual and the group, but that take into account both the effects the members of a group acting freely and spontaneously among themselves have upon the organization of a community and the constraints the very structure of the group exert upon itself, and these two aspects of the problem are now seen as interacting dialectically. How is a civil society created in the context of state rule ? How do the private and public sectors intrude upon one another ? What cultural and ideological conditions are necessary to create a given form of civil society ? A colloquium of specialists on East Asia who gathered together in Paris in 1991 tried to find at least partial answers to these questions as they concern the history of societies in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. This collection of the papers presented - in English and French - gives us a striking panoramic view of some of the most characteristic forms of the social systems of ancient, medieval and China, of feudal and post-feudal Japan, of traditional Korea and of Vietnam in the seventeenth century.

Cognitive Perspectives on Language

The papers collected in the present volume show that the terms cognitivism and cognitive, so common in present day linguistic discourse, do not refer to a single theoretical mode or approach to language. Firstly, the papers show that cognitivism is a lively research area accommodating a wide spectrum of approaches. Secondly, they address a number of issues ranging from grammaticalization, event structure, semantic representation, equivalence, image schematic representations and lexicography to poetry, metaphor, metonymy, and national mentality. Some of the contributions deal with the linguistic phenomena in one language, while others take up a cross-linguistic approach.

Les voix d'un seul peuple. Voices of one people

Influenced both by Yoruba poetry and European culture, Thony Babarinde sings and praises harmony, peace and unity. A powerful ode to the uniqueness of the quest for freedom in every society. This poem underlines his interconnection between Yoruba, English and French language.

Wilmotte - Murano

This book, published in the wake of the "Agua e fogo" - "Water and Fire" - exhibition, highlights the work of French designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte in collaboration with Murano's glassblowers and craftsmen. Wilmotte's " Vessels " collection is a blend of nostalgia and modernity. Its 60 creations (chandeliers, table lamps, wall lamps, vases) are inspired by the designer's childhood memories of contemplating his father's pharmaceutical laboratory. Using the transparency and malleability of glass, each piece is delicate and refined, emphasising symmetry and balance - themes that Wilmotte is very fond of in his work. Alessandra Chemollo's photographs, shot exclusively in Venice, suggest a journey through the city, its craftsmen's workshops and its reflections. Architecture and craftsmanship are thus merged, in a quest for continuity and complementarity.

- In 1945, the French artist Jean Dubuffet coined the oxymoron "Art Brut" to designate works made by autodidacts on the margins of official art circles. Dubuffet went on to form a collection of such works, which in 1971 he donated in its entirety to the City of Lausanne, where the Collection de l'Art Brut opened in February 1976. Published for the fortieth anniversary of the museum's inauguration, the present volume retraces the birth of the Lausanne institution and addresses the key moments that have marked its development. It casts new light on the first event of its kind to be held outside the walls of the Compagnie de l'Art Brut, entitled L'Art Brut and presented in 1949 at the Galerie René Drouin in Paris. Revisiting this event afresh is a perfect opportunity for assessing the critical impact of an exhibition that broke new ground at the time.

Studies in Elizabethan Audience Response to the Theatre

The aim of this volume is to apply the findings of volume 1, the actor-character relationship in documentary evidence of Elizabethans, to a set of plays particularly teasing to the visual sense : the female page plays, in which a boy actor presents a female character in male disguise. The study concludes that such transformations were often intentionally deceiving. As a consequence, the homoerotic aspect deserves further consideration, which results in an analysis of the ways in which male sexual disguise and feminine men or boys were related in the power structure of Elizabethan society as expressed in (literary) texts. A detailed analysis of the individual plays points out where, when, and how authors used the device of the female page, distinguishing between the several theatres and groups in Elizabethan London.

Studies in Elizabethan Audience Response to the Theatre

The aim of this volume is to give an analytic description of how Elizabethan Spectators in documentary evidence responded to the theatre performances they watched or knew to be about. It also considers why they responded in that way. Opposing dual consciousness to the reification of the character (its 'ideal presence'), the author concludes that Elizabethan spectators were predominantly interested in the characters' 'ideal presence'. Why they were, is explained by relating their statements to the Renaissance theory of visual perception, (demonic) transformation, and ideas on acting.

The Threat of Logical Mathematism

The present survey of the critique of mathematical logic in Germany at the turn of the 20th century attempts to answer several interesting questions : How did the contemporary German philosophers see the role and significance of logic ? What kind of relationships did they claim to exist between logic, mathematics, linguistics and psychology ? Pulkkinen starts by giving a historical survey of the development of German logic 1830-1920 as it appears against the background of German academic philosophy. Next he studies the interrelationships between logic and psychology, logic and linguistics, and logic and mathematics. After this the author presents the general features of the reception of mathematical logic in Germany between 1880 and 1920. This is followed by a more detailed account of the arguments of three individual critics : Fritz Mauthner, Heinrich Rickert, and Theodor Ziehen.

Ancient Greek by Its Translators

When not familiar with the language itself, most readers over the centuries have had access to the ancient Greek texts only or mostly through (Latin or vernacular) translations. Such an approach is not only indirect and mediated, but also distorted and even impoverishing : meaning then prevails over the linguistic form and substance of the texts themselves. What do later or modern readers read when they read translated texts written in an ancient so-called dead language ? They read a given meaning - sometimes unfaithful, often inaccurate - dictated by a genuine understanding, the blind continuation of tradition, or an untold hidden intention. The complex range of significances conveyed by meaning simultaneously reflects the time and space (called synchrony) of when and where a text has been translated, the historical learning and linguistic skills of the translators, as well as their ideas and style. As a contribution to the perennial debate about translation (mere literary transliteration vs. creative transposition), this volume aims at analyzing some striking cases of various (literary or not) texts translated from ancient Greek showing how much for the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries aesthetics and ideology matter as much as - and often even more than - rigorous philology.

Mehersthan Memoir (Meher Baba)

Mehersthan Memoir (Meher Baba) This book is dedicated to the unique One who has assumed a form and name to lead the play of universal existence. He throbs in our loving heart ; He breathes in our living soul. He sings in our fervent spirit and he thinks in our purified mind. That infinite Ancient One from his supernal height, bends towards us to embrace us in his love, and to feed our soul with the nectar of his bliss. Blessed are they that have the mind to know him, the heart to feel him and the love to live in his consciousness ! He may have been born to human parents in Poona, studied in a college, played cricket, left home, have seen great souls, sat alone silent, spoken in gestures, written books - but that is not his history. Many live such a life ; many scholars write books ; many saints sit in contemplation ; many monks leave home for mountain resorts ; but they cannot be one like him. Millions of bulbs challenge in vain the darkness of night. One sun rises and the night dissolves into his golden light. One sun rises and the night dissolves into his golden light. We have seen monks, yogins and saints. Some live alone for peace. Some open Ashrams and collect donations to run them. Some comercialise their name and form. Some display miracles to surprise human minds ; some offer boons ; some predict the future ; some curse you when you do not offer them what they want. Some seek pleasure and treasure. But who seeks God and finds God in the self to awaken God-awareness in other men and women ? Who says "I am God and you are God too"? Who rises above the prattle of words, the rattle of weapons and battle of ideologies to the lofty peace of supersonic silence and pours his blessings from the dizzy height of the soul in tune with God ? Who is he that embraces all in the heart and awakens the soul which has none of the human creations of caste, religion, race, pedigree nor colour ? Editions ASSA, Christian Piaget

A Life of Her Own

This study reconstructs Brittain's feminist theory, which mainly refutes assumptions made about women, supports companionate marriage, and demands the communal reorganization of child care and domestic work to enable a married woman to work outside her home. It compares her theory to her five novels. Doing so, it uncovers revealing feminist 'flaws', above all that marriage remains, the sine qua non for a woman's happiness. The study describes Brittain's way to the top as a formidable obstacle race, in which she constantly had to fight the men she loved, her children, her parents, and resulting domesticity in order to find time to write "the book of the decade". She reached her goal with the publication of Testament of Youth in 1933.

The Gay Agenda

The "gay agenda" is a rhetorical strategy deployed by the religious right and other social conservatives to magnify fear and hostility of queers. Queers are accused, among other things, of strategizing to recruit children into sexually deviant lifestyles ; dismantling family and marriage as cornerstones of civilization ; and forcing the entertainment industry and court systems to do their bidding. Queers certainly do have an agenda but it is not the one that the religious right claims it is. It is to assert their presence in the public space ; claim and name their identities ; and strategize for social justice in law, schools, and workplaces. The Gay Agenda : Claiming Space, Identity, and Justice claims and reclaims the language of "agenda" and turns the rhetoric of the religious right on its ear. The contributors provide insightful and sharp commentary on gay agendas for human rights, marriage and family, cultural influences, schooling and education, and politics and law.

-- The excavations (French Ministry of Foreign Affairs/IFAO) carried out at Domitianè/Kainè Latomia (Umm Balad) in 2001-2003 have added to our knowledge of the occupation of the Eastern Desert of Egypt in Roman times. This site, located in the Porphyrites massif, has a rock deposit of "granito verde fiorito di bigio" (diorite), the attempted exploitation of which led to the construction of a fortlet by the army under Domitian. It served as a base for the quarry workers. Although very mutilated, the gate inscription indicates a date of construction around 88-92. This early state does not seem to go beyond the beginning of Trajan's reign. The praesidium was probably abandoned thereafter, until around 146, when it was reoccupied only for a short period of time, before being abandoned again. The examination of the two quarries provides a lot of information about the organisation of the exploitation works, but the scenarios that we can establish about their respective histories remain largely speculative. The commissioning of Kainè Latomia finally ended in failure, probably due to the poor quality of the stone. However, some blocks were sent to Rome where they were first used for the decoration of the Domus Flavia on the Palatine.

Claude Gillot. Satire in the Age of Reason

This scholarly publication presents the work of the designer, painter and illustrator Claude Gillot (1673-1722). The first volume on the artist in English, it accompanies a major exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum that explores Gillot's inventive and highly original draftsmanship and places his work in the context of artistic and intellectual activity in Paris ca. 1700. The history of eighteenth-century French art under the ancien régime is dominated by great names. But the artistic scene in Paris at the dawn of the century was diverse and included artists who forged careers largely outside of the Royal Academy. Among them was Claude Gillot. Known primarily as a draftsman, Gillot specialized in witty scenes taken from the Italian commedia dell'arte plays performed at fairground theaters and vignettes of satyrs enacting rituals that expose human folly. The book will address Gillot's work as a designer, painter, and book illustrator, and advance a chronology for his career. Crafting a timeline for Gillot's life and work will clarify his relationship with his younger collaborators Antoine Watteau and Nicolas Lancret. Through an artistic biography and six chapters, each devoted to an aspect of his oeuvre, Gillot's role in developing quintessential rococo subjects is established. We follow Gillot from his start as the son of a decorative painter in the bishopric of Langres to his arrival in Paris in the 1690s, as the city and its secular entertainments flourished apart from the royal court at Versailles. Myriad opportunities awaited artists outside official channels, and Gillot built his career working in the theater and as a painter and designer long before seeking official academic status. His involvement with writers, playwrights, and printmakers helped define his sphere. Gillot's preference for theatrical subjects brought him critical attention, and also attracted talented assistants such as Watteau and Lancret. Gillot came to prominence around 1712 working at the Paris Opéra and as a printmaker and illustrator of books, lending his droll humor to satires. By 1720, Gillot was enlisted to design costumes for the last royal ballet, one of the final projects of his career. He died nine months after his most celebrated pupil, Watteau. The sale of his estate, which including his designs and many etched copper plates, provided material for printmakers and publishers and ensured Gillot's lasting fame among print connoisseurs. His oeuvre as a draftsman and painter, however, was largely forgotten until drawings and canvases began to emerge in the first half of the twentieth century.
