This volume asserts that there was tacit cooperation in the Nazi extermination of the Jewish population of Europe by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Second World War. Although the Allies publicly recognized the Nazi massacre of the Jews in the London Declaration of December 17, 1942, the policies they pursued allowed the genocide to continue. They did so, the author claims, in three ways : (1) refusal to publicly and personally speak about and against the Nazi extermination of the Jews ; (2) refusal to commit even one soldier, one plane, or one warship to any forcible opposition to the "Final Solution" throughout the Second World War ; and (3) obstruction of Jewish escape from Hitler's Europe. This book explores the motivation for the policies Churchill and Roosevelt pursued.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY IN CONTEMPORARY JAPAN
More than ever before Japan is committed to becoming a science and technology-oriented nation. With the challenge of the Asian economic crisis in the late 1 990s, there is pressure on the Japanese economy to change. Japan continues to turn to science and technology to safeguard its future, but there is more than one path to follow. A team of three leading scholars in the field explore the dynamic relationship between science, technology and Japanese society, examining how it has contributed to economic growth and the well-being of the Japanese people. They ask if there is anything distinctively Japanese about Japanese science, in terms of both its development and application.
This book presents a synthesis of recent debates by juxtaposing competing views about the role and direction of science, technology and medical care in Japan. Much of the book looks at government policy, the role of the private sector, and the response of concerned citizens. Other topics discussed include computers and communication, quality control and the automobile industry, the aerospace industry, the environment, consumer electronics, changes in medical care, and the role of gender.
Part I explores the features of the Japanese model of research and development. It differentiates between basic and applied research and considers the question of cooperation versus competition in national R&D projects. Part 2 focuses on the relevance of science and technology to economic growth, and Part 3 examines the impact of globalisation on the flow of science and technology in and out of Japan. Part 4 critiques the concept of 'national interest', arguing that supposed national goals are often determined by powerful institutional or corporate groups with particular vested interests.
This book is an ideal introductory text for students in the sociology of science and technology, the history and philosophy of science, and Japanese studies. Although the prominence of Matthew's anti-Jewish polemic has been widely recognized in recent years, curiously little attention has thus far been given to the contribution made by chapters 11 and 12 to this theme. Often dismissed as a loose compendium of controversy-stories, this narrative section actually displays a solid, thematic unity dealing with the tragic fact of Jesus'rejection by the covenant people, Israel. Matthew's usually thoughtful style is evident in these chapters as he proceeds in a quite independent manner to clarify the unexpectedly humble nature of the messianic mission, the consequences of its rejection and the identity of the true people of God.

The Biblical Vision of the Human Person
Although modern study of the Bible has made impressive philological advances, it lacks an adequate philosophical frame of reference that would link the symbolism of the Biblical narrative to the problems of human existence. The present work sets out to provide the germ of a philosophy of language and human consciousness that would serve as a basis for a proper exegesis of the Biblical text. Part One establishes the historical, philosophical and hermeneutical framework by examining the link between experience, symbolization and the structure of human consciousness as elaborated historically in myth and philosophy. Part Two applies this framework to representative anthropological texts from the Old and New Testaments in order to forge a link between the Biblical symbolism and the fundamental problems of human existence. Part Three draws attention to the implications of the inquiry for a philosophical anthropology and a more comprehensive hermeneutical framework.

Philip Freneau- Tomo Cheeki, the Creek Indian in Philadelphia
Philip Freneau (1752-1832) was one of the first Americans to gain wide recognition as a writer. He is generally remembered as the "father of American poetry," but his prose writings have not always received the attention they deserve. As the editor of three important papers in the late 18th century (The National Gazette. The Jersey Chronicle, and The Time-Piece and Literary Companion) and as a contributor to many others, Freneau produced a large number of political and literary essays. The "Tomo Cheeki Essays", which were published in 1795 and in 1797, constitute an excellent example of Freneau's prose work. These pseudo-autobiographical accounts of an Indian visiting a city of the Whites are based upon the model of the European "oriental tale," while simultaneously incorporating American subject matter. The essays are representative of a decisive period of American literary history, since they reveal both Freneau's indebtedness to European culture and his role in the process of overcoming this indebtedness in the beginning creation of an independent national literature. The present edition provides the first complete and separate modern collection of the essays, which gives the reader an opportunity to get acquainted with an important example of early American prose writing that has been virtually inaccessible up to now.

Italian Maiolica and Other Early Modern Ceramics in the Courtauld Gallery
This is the first catalogue of the collection of early modern ceramics in the Courtauld. The pieces in the collection showcase brilliantly the skill of potters and pottery painters working at the time of Raphael and Titian. Maiolica is one of the most revealing expressions of Renaissance art. Its extraordinary range of colours retain the vividness that they had when they left the potter's kiln. Italian potters absorbed techniques and shapes from the Islamic world and incorporated ornament and subject matter from the arts of ancient Rome. This new approach to pottery making, combined with the invention of printing, woodcut and engraving, resulted in an extraordinary type of painted pottery, praised by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists for 'surpassing the ancient with its brilliance of glaze and variety of painting'. The collection boasts a magnificent group of vessels made during the high Renaissance, the golden age of Italian maiolica. It includes precious and delicate Deruta lustreware with imagery deriving from Perugino and Raphael, as well as vessels painted in a narrative style of pottery painting known as istoriato. Highlights include vessels depicting episodes taken from the first printed Bibles of the Renaissance. Istoriato maiolica flourished particularly in the lands of the Dukes of Urbino, who promoted this craft by sending painted pottery to prestigious patrons across Europe. Emblems and devices painted on the pottery help us understand that they were meant to be used and enjoyed by the elites in Renaissance society, such as the Medici and other great Tuscan families. The catalogue will include two recent gifts to the Courtauld, a rare tile of the famous patroness of the arts Marchioness Isabella D'Este, and a refined dish painted with the story of Diana and Actaeon. All major Renaissance pottery centres are represented in the collection, including Siena, Faenza and Venice, as well as splendid examples of the mysterious pharmacy jars made at the foot of the mountain of Gran Sasso in the town of Castelli d'Abruzzo. These achievements of the art of pottery in the early modern period are completed by fine examples of Ottoman pottery, as well as examples of Valencian lustreware. Sani's introductory essay on the Victorian collector Thomas Gambier Parry will shed new light on the development of this fascinating collection, making links between Gambier Parry's artistic practice and his collecting and revealing new insights into his taste as a collector. Each detailed entry uncovers a wealth of new information on the provenance of the pieces.

Issues in the Philosophy of Language Past and Present
In the light of contemporary perspectives a good deal of traditional philosophical thought can be read as relating to the issue of 'Language versus Reality'. The chapters of this book vindicate this claim ; bringing together thinkers different both in temperament and interests like Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Aquinas, Heidegger and Gadamer they suggest that some of their major tenets reflect conceptual assumptions concerning linguistic meaning and reference. In trying to both identify and elucidate the assumptions at stake the author shows, both historically and systematically, that some of the problems experienced in the past as well as much of our contemporary concern with the same issue form a continuous line and a common endeavour ; and they have not yet come to an end.

Après la mort d'un ouvrier à Pittsburgh en 1904, un jeune Africain-Américain appelé Citoyen Barlow se présente à la porte de la maison de Tante Ester, un lieu de paix et de fraternité. Il demande à cette ancienne esclave de deux cent quatre-vingt-cinq ans de "laver son âme". Dans une ville en proie aux manifestations ouvrières au début du XXe siècle, le jeune Citoyen devra traverser "la grande eau" et retrouver la "Cité des Os" afin de se réconcilier avec son histoire, celle de sa courte vie et celle de son "peuple".

En rentrant en Bretagne pour me présenter à sa famille et faire son coming out, Florent ne savait pas à quoi s'attendre. Une chose est sûre, il ne s'attendait pas à devoir composer avec une invasion de morts-vivants. Ni moi non plus, d'ailleurs... Pendant un an, les choses n'ont pas trop mal tourné pour nous. Jusqu'à ce qu'un néonazi et sa bande de fanatiques investissent le supermarché où nous avions trouvé refuge aux côtés d'un groupe hétéroclite de rescapés de l'apocalypse et décident de massacrer tout le monde. Tout le monde... ou presque. Nous laisser pour morts était une erreur : moi et mon mec, on est des battants. Et pour étancher notre soif de vengeance, on est bien déterminés à survivre encore une journée. Reste à savoir si notre couple y survivra...

Blood of the virgin
Seymour, 27 ans, d'origine irakienne, est monteur dans le cinéma du Hollywood des années 1970. Films de série B, bandes annonces... il n'est que simple exécutant au sein des studios Revery. Or, Seymour se rêve cinéaste, et espère qu'il pourra bientôt réaliser son premier projet, Blood of the virgin, un film de loup-garou qu'il a presque fini d'écrire. Lorsqu'on lui propose enfin de le produire, le budget alloué est minime, on lui en refuse la direction et il s'en retrouve très vite complètement dépossédé. Perpétuellement rabroué lors des conflits avec ses collaborateurs et leurs egos, Seymour traverse en même temps une crise dans son couple, fragilisé depuis la naissance de leur fils. Tout semble lui échapper à mesure qu'il s'accroche. Dans un monde où les apparences deviennent identités et les vérités avancent sous le masque du non-dit, il n'a pas d'autres choix que de partir en quête de lui-même et de la femme qui partage sa vie. Cette histoire captivante et profonde sur le désenchantement du rêve hollywoodien s'enrichit de digressions géographiques et temporelles, de changements de points de vue et d'un découpage nerveux et cinématographique. Sammy Harkham réussit avec brio à nous plonger dans le quotidien de ses personnages, dont la sensibilité et l'imperfection provoquent immédiatement l'attachement.

There has been a heated international debate over Salman Rushdie's book The Satanic Verses ever since its publication in 1988. The present work examines the ways in which this affair has developed. From the beginning, one can find strong rhetorical emphases ; these are shown to argue for maintenance of meaningful boundaries. The thesis of Kuortti's book is that on each side of the debate, people use similar language to argue for the sanctity of their convictions. This is evident especially in the opposition between the arguments for the sacrality of Islam and literature. In the international exchange, how could we then find more respectful ways of acknowledging that we are not that dissimilar from each other ?

En 2006, les Emirats arabes unis décident d'entreprendre le projet fantasque de faire pousser une ville entière en plein désert. Masdar City, catégorisée "ville verte", a pour but premier d'atteindre le 0% d'émission de CO2. Ce projet pharaonique conçu par le bureau d'architecture londonien Foster + Partners arrive à l'heure où les préoccupations écologiques liées à la consommation d'énergie et la pollution sont grandissantes. Aujourd'hui, seulement quelques bâtiments sont sortis du sable : une université scientifique, des laboratoires de recherche ainsi que des sièges de grandes multinationales tel que celui de Siemens. "The City of Possibilities" présente une série de photographies réalisées par Etienne Malapert lors de son voyage à Masdar City, cette ville verte au pays de l'or noir.

Out of the blue
Lucie entre dans une école de cinéma, elle travaille dans une friperie, elle a vingt ans. Elle se regarde, se photographie, et sur les réseaux envoie son image. Son prof l'ignore. Elle voudrait être blonde comme l'autre, ses cheveux sont crépus. Elle découvre Out of the blue de Dennis Hopper, et Cebe, incarnée par Linda Manz, la fascine. Elle voudrait être Cebe parce que c'est une héroïne révoltée, violente et désespérée. Mais pas facile de se révolter comme ça, de nos jours. Lucie essaie, se fait un film. Elle joue la révolte la violence la passion. Avec la rage de réussir à Paris. Coûte que coûte. Et l'écriture cingle comme une gifle.
