Une passionnante épopée moderne, scientifique et humaine : 4 années à sillonner les océans pour étudier et documenter la vie entre la surface et 174 m de profondeur, des avancées scientifiques majeures et l'invention de Capsule, un habitat sous-marin léger et autonome inspiré de Jules Verne. De 2017à2021, l'équipe d'UNDER THE POLE a navigué à travers l'Atlantique, l'océan Arctique et le Pacifique à bord de la goélette WHY pour étudier et documenter la vie entre la surface et 174 mètres de profondeur. Des glaces aux Tropiques, en collaboration permanente avec les scientifiques, ils vont s'immiscer là où les derniers rayons de lumière pénètrent l'océan et mettre ainsi à profit leur expérience des expéditions et de la plongée profonde pour mener trois missions novatrices consacrées à la connaissance d'une zone méconnue et pourtant essentielle à l'équilibre des océans : la zone mésophotique. Durant 4 ans, ils ont cherché la fluorescence naturelle dans les profondeurs du mythique passage du Nord-Ouest puis ils ont réalisé près de 1 000 plongées en Polynésie française pour une étude sans précédent des coraux profonds, avant de vivre sous la mer dans un observatoire sousmarin qu'ils ont imaginé et construit : la Capsule. Entre deux mondes raconte l'épopée de cette équipe emmenée par Ghislain Bardout et Emmanuelle Périé-Bardout, accompagnés par leurs deux enfants Robin et Tom, avec ses difficultés et ses richesses et leur volonté de plus en plus affirmée de consacrer leurs missions à la recherche scientifique, à l'éducation et à la sensibilisation, au service d'une meilleure connaissance et de la préservation des océans.

In the light of contemporary perspectives a good deal of traditional philosophical thought can be read as relating to the issue of 'Language versus Reality'. The chapters of this book vindicate this claim ; bringing together thinkers different both in temperament and interests like Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Aquinas, Heidegger and Gadamer they suggest that some of their major tenets reflect conceptual assumptions concerning linguistic meaning and reference. In trying to both identify and elucidate the assumptions at stake the author shows, both historically and systematically, that some of the problems experienced in the past as well as much of our contemporary concern with the same issue form a continuous line and a common endeavour ; and they have not yet come to an end.

Around these illusionists with no audience, the hidden alphas will begin to rise. Within a few months, alphas, forged in a new metal, invaded public space. How can it be explained ? In troubled times, the hierarchies of peacetime had left, suddenly, a place to the atomisation of individuals. Chaos then allows the individual alphas to rise to power. Like a pack of wolves, these alphas quickly take the lead of small human groups organising themselves into rival packs. The French Revolution is a striking example of this evolution : the masters of yesterday were relegated because of their unsuitability.

Ancient Greek by Its Translators
When not familiar with the language itself, most readers over the centuries have had access to the ancient Greek texts only or mostly through (Latin or vernacular) translations. Such an approach is not only indirect and mediated, but also distorted and even impoverishing : meaning then prevails over the linguistic form and substance of the texts themselves. What do later or modern readers read when they read translated texts written in an ancient so-called dead language ? They read a given meaning - sometimes unfaithful, often inaccurate - dictated by a genuine understanding, the blind continuation of tradition, or an untold hidden intention. The complex range of significances conveyed by meaning simultaneously reflects the time and space (called synchrony) of when and where a text has been translated, the historical learning and linguistic skills of the translators, as well as their ideas and style. As a contribution to the perennial debate about translation (mere literary transliteration vs. creative transposition), this volume aims at analyzing some striking cases of various (literary or not) texts translated from ancient Greek showing how much for the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries aesthetics and ideology matter as much as - and often even more than - rigorous philology.

«Die Welt war meine Gemeinde»- Willem A. Visser ’t Hooft. A Theologian for Europe between Ecumenism and Federalism
Willem A. Visser 't Hooft (1900–1985), Dutch pastor and theologian, was one of the most significant personalities in the Protestant Ecumenical movement. Deeply influenced by Karl Barth, and filled with a strong Ecumenical spirit, he was closely involved in the founding of the World Council of Churches, of which he was elected General Secretary. During the Second World War, many Protestants became convinced of the need for an international political system which, beside uniting the nations and peoples of Europe, would guarantee them fundamental freedoms and mutual respect for their historical, cultural and confessional traditions. The directors of the WWC were strongly committed to federalism, partly because of the political traditions of the states from which their member churches originated (Switzerland ; Great Britain and its Commonwealth ; the United States), and partly because of their conviction that a simple confederation of states, based on the model of the League of Nations, would be completely incapable of containing national ambitions. In spring 1944, Visser 't Hooft welcomed into his Geneva home the representatives of the European Resistance, who, under the leadership of Altiero Spinelli and Ernesto Rossi, signed the International Federalist Declaration of the Resistance Movements. These historic transnational encounters, aimed not only at coordinating military action or seeking diplomatic contacts but at exploring ways to "build" peace and re-establish the future of the Continent on new foundations, marked a profound break with the past.

Les informations classifiées sont des documents dont l'accès est restreint par la loi, à une catégorie particulière de personnes, dans le but de préserver le secret de ces informations. Une habilitation d'accès au secret, appelée clearance est attribuée, afin d'autoriser une personne à manipuler des documents classés ou une certaine catégorie d'informations, nécessitant souvent une vérification des antécédents professionnels, avant qu'elle ne soit octroyée. Ce genre de système hiérarchique du secret est utilisé par presque tous les gouvernements, ainsi que par de nombreuses sociétés privées, travaillant pour la Défense. Le but de la classification et le secret sont de protéger les informations, pour éviter qu'elles ne soient utilisées à de mauvaises fins (ou de mettre en danger) les objectifs de sécurité nationale. Aux Etats-Unis, une information ne peut théoriquement pas être classée par pure commodité, simplement parce qu'elle serait embarrassante, ou par le caprice d'un supérieur hiérarchique quelconque. L'information ne peut être classée que par rapport aux risques réels qu'elle pourrait causer, sur les objectifs de la sécurité nationale de l'Etat. La plupart des autorisations d'accès et la classification des informations, concernant le gouvernement des Etats-Unis, sont organisées en fonction de systèmes de classifications établis par le directeur de la CIA, et utilisés en vertu du décret 13292 (modifiant l'Executive Order 12958) promulgué par le président George W. Bush en 2003. Ce décret fixe les systèmes de classifications des informations traitées par le gouvernement et ses différents fonctionnaires et employés, par les entrepreneurs et les entreprises industrielles, lorsqu'elles travaillent pour la Défense, concernant l'utilisation de matériels ou d'informations classifiées. Atlas of the Lunar Terminator
This Atlas is based on high-resolution electronic images of the terminator area of the Moon under 47 different illuminations. Each image is displayed across two or three pages. Features as small as 1-2 kilometers can be seen. For each illumination, accompanying text describes the major features shown in each view, along with larger-scale images of selected areas, which are indexed with their positions and dimensions.
Two text chapters describe and illustrate the techniques of lunar observing and the types of landforms. Observing data are presented through 2010. Experienced observers will find the Atlas an invaluable planning tool, while beginners will gain an understanding of lunar geography and geology. There is an index of 1000 named lunar formations, cross-referenced to the images.
No other atlas shows the Moon under such a variety of observing conditions.

Nationalism in Education
The comparative Reader, with authors from 6 continents and 9 countries analyses, to what extent the nation concept is still at the heart of international organizations and agreements, under which circumstances nationalism rose in specific regions and cultures at different times, and, to what extent education was influenced by or used for nationalistic doctrines and policies. Case studies as well as systematic analyses illustrate, that education can hardly change its own socioeconomic and political context. However, education and educational policy can support a prevention of and balance to nationalism in the long run, if they counteract stereotyping and scapegoating, familiarize with overlapping and competing loyalties, and, encourage human rights, international cooperation and cultural relationalism.

Food and Agricultural Policies under Structural Adjustment
After more than a decade of experience with structural adjustment programs, the Hohenheim-Seminar of the European Association of Agricultural Economists "Food and Agricultural Policies under Structural Adjustment" brought together researchers and development experts to exchange research results and experiences ; to explore alternative approaches that might be more effective for growth, institutional development and welfare ; and to draw conclusions for food and agricultural policy design. The book consistently emphasizes that appart from agricultural prices non-price factors constitute in many countries the binding constraints to better agricultural performance. Improvements are needed in education, health, social services, transport and rural support institutions. Alleviating such constraints are longterm processes, and success cannot be expected overnight. At the same time, immediate actions are needed to protect the poor against negative effects of structural adjustment measures.

Andrea Sacchi and Cardinal del Monte. The Rediscovered Frescoes in the Palazzo di Ripetta in Rome
This fascinating and beautifully illustrated book presents for the first time the rediscovered frescoes painted by Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661) for the loggia of Cardinal del Monte's Roman palace near via di Ripetta, Rome. Considered lost by generations of scholars, Andrea Sacchi's fresco cycle has survived in a private apartment in Rome. Largely unpublished and rarely mentioned in recent literature, the frescoes underwent a revelatory restoration in 2010-11. For the past three years, the author was granted exclusive access to study them thoroughly - resulting in this monograph. Accompanied by beautiful and full photographic documentation, this study aims to compare the painted images with the detailed description given by the biographer Giovan Pietro Bellori ; to shed light on the iconography and style, above all with respect to the sources used ; and to integrate this key commission within Sacchi's early career. The cycle's iconography is explored with careful verification of early sources that now allows us to resolve some particularly complex problems of interpretation - above all those relating to alchemy. Cardinal del Monte's Palazzo di Ripetta housed a fully equipped pharmacological laboratory. Research on this cycle of frescoes has also made it possible to discover new archival evidence regarding Sacchi's date and place of birth.

In this series of papers, we investigate the relative index theorem from the point of view of algebraic analysis. On a complex manifold X, let M he a coherent Dx-module and F an IR-mnstruc-tible sheaf. The complex RHompx (M, RHom(F, Ox)) is the complex of solutions of the system of PDE represented by M in the sheaf of generalized holomorphic functions associated to F. A natural problem is to find conditions under which such a complex has finite dimensional global cohomology and then to compute the corresponding Euler-Poincaré characteristic. We prove the finiteness theorem when (M, F) has compact support and is "elliptic", i.e. : char(M) n SS(F) C TxX where char(M) is the characteristic variety of M, SS(F) is the micro-support of F and TxX is the zero section of the cotangent bundle. In fact, we give a relative version of this finiteness result together with the associated duality theorem and Künneth formula. Our methods rely upon results of functional analysis over a .sheaf of Fréchet algebras obtained by one of the authors. Next, we attach a "microloeal Order class" µeu(M, F) E H2dx char M+SSF (T X ; D) to any elliptic pair (M, F) and prove that, under natural assumptions, this class is compatible with direct images, inverse images and external products. In particular, we get the index formula : X(RP(X ; RHom(M x F ; Ox))) = f yeu(M, F) T2xx (M) = fTX yeu (M) U yeu (F). When F = CM and X is a complexification of the real analytic manifold M, our salts for the pair (M, F) give an index theorem for elliptic systems and we discuss its relations with the Ariyah-Singer theorem.

This study reconstructs Brittain's feminist theory, which mainly refutes assumptions made about women, supports companionate marriage, and demands the communal reorganization of child care and domestic work to enable a married woman to work outside her home. It compares her theory to her five novels. Doing so, it uncovers revealing feminist 'flaws', above all that marriage remains, the sine qua non for a woman's happiness. The study describes Brittain's way to the top as a formidable obstacle race, in which she constantly had to fight the men she loved, her children, her parents, and resulting domesticity in order to find time to write "the book of the decade". She reached her goal with the publication of Testament of Youth in 1933.

Physical scientists are problem solvers. They are comfortable "doing" science: they find problems, solve them, and explain their solutions. Roger Newton believes that his fellow physicists might be too comfortable with their roles as solvers of problems. He argues that physicists should spend more time thinking about physics. If they did, he believes, they would become even more skilled at solving problems and "doing" science. As Newton points out in this thought-provoking book, problem solving is always influenced by the theoretical assumptions of the problem solver. Too often, though, he believes, physicists haven't subjected their assumptions to thorough scrutiny. Newton's goal is to provide a framework within which the fundamental theories of modem physics can be explored, interpreted, and understood.
"Surely physics is more than a collection of experimental results, assembled to satisfy the curiosity of appreciative experts," Newton writes. Physics, according to Newton, has moved beyond the describing and naming of curious phenomena, which is the goal of some other branches of science. Physicists have spent a great part of the twentieth century searching for explanations of experimental findings. Newton agrees that experimental facts are vital to the study of physics, but only because they lead to the development of a theory that can explain them. Facts, he argues, should undergird theory.
Newton's explanatory sweep is both broad and deep. He covers such topics as quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, field theory, thermodynamics, the role of mathematics in physics, and the concepts of probability and causality. For Newton the fundamental entity in quantum theory is the field, from which physicists can explain the particle-like and wave-like properties that are observed in experiments. He grounds his explanations in the quantum field.
Although this is not designed as a standalone textbook, it is essential reading for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and researchers. This is a clear, concise, up-to-date book about the concepts and theories that underlie the study of contemporary physics. Readers will find that they will become better-informed physicists and, therefore, better thinkers and problem solvers, too.

Chronologiquement situé entre La Stratégie Ender et La Voix des morts - deux livres couronnés par les prix Hugo et Nebula en 1986 et 1987 -, L'Exil éclaire pour la première fois l'adolescence d'Ender et son entrée dans l'âge adulte, ces années de voyage relativiste dans les étoiles où il s'est mis en quête d'un espoir de rédemption. L'auteur y retrouve ses plus belles qualités de conteur.

Histoire hors normes de ce petit bonhomme simple, né à Nice, parti à la campagne au milieu des poules et des canards, revenant dans sa ville natale à l'âge de 12 ans. Et puis, atteint d'un important traumatisme crânien, il devint, à son adolescence, un antisocial, criant à sa liberté, passant par sa fenêtre, la nuit, pour aller regarder les étoiles au bord de sa belle Méditerranée, où déjà son insouciance s'ancrait en lui, poursuivi par la suite par cette inconscience qui ne le quittera plus. Un procrastineur était né. Une fois adulte, tout en travaillant, il fréquentera ces hommes côtoyant la mort ou la prison, payant très cher ce choix de vie pour lutter contre cette routine qu'il déteste encore, tout en en assumant les conséquences, gardant des séquelles à vie. Il naviguera dans tous les bars-restaurants et discothèques du 06, faisant des rencontres de folie, partageant des brèves de comptoir, se saoulant quelquefois à n'en plus pouvoir, mais toujours droit dans ses bottes. Il montera des expéditions punitives, bravera des hommes pour son respect, en punira certains. La nuit le fascine avec tout ce qui l'entoure, continuant à faire quelques entorses aux lois de la société, au nom du oui et de la parole donnée. Sans oublier ces belles dames d'exception, allant du flirt jusqu'à l'extase de l'amour, rencontrées au fil du temps, trop sacrifiées sur l'autel de la Liberté. Ces écrits sont pour elles aussi, leur demandant de lui pardonner. A ses enfants aussi, faisant bien sûr partie de sa vie, racontant cet amour incroyable ancré dans son coeur et ce bonheur indescriptible d'avoir pu les créer. 69 ans, toujours là à rire et à chanter, à la poursuite d'autres aventures, grisé par l'histoire de sa vie dans l'écriture, ne pouvant la résumer totalement en si peu de lignes. Then we find them reflecting in ourselves, because we are nature, though not identical with it.

Nolan et Sara doivent réapprendre à vivre l'un sans l'autre. Se lancer à corps perdu dans le travail est le seul moyen de ne pas se noyer dans l'océan des souvenirs. Le manque de l'autre est là, lancinant, mais il faut avancer. Nolan enchaîne les heures au salon de tatouage W. Ink, et Sara avance au jour le jour, encore, soutenue par son amie Nora. Mais la vie a un sens de l'humour douteux, et les oblige à se recroiser. Il l'a aimée à la folie, et a remis en question ses certitudes pour elle. Elle l'a aimé à en perdre la raison, et s'est brûlée les ailes. Seront-ils capables d'oublier ce qui les oppose, ou leurs différences les sépareront-elles définitivement ?
