Charlotte Perriand et la photographie. L'oeil en éventail
Au cours des années 1930, parallèlement à ses activités d'architecte, de designer, d'urbaniste et de militante, la photographie occupe une place importante dans sa création. L'aventure photographique débute en 1927 et se clôt au Japon en 1940. Se déployant tout au long de la période pionnière, quand se développe la modernité, elle s'éteint sur l'espoir d'un monde meilleur anéanti par la seconde guerre mondiale. La photographie est pour Charlotte Perriand le " laboratoire secret " de ses recherches plastiques et philosophiques : c'est une " machine " à penser. Son oeuvre photographique, qui exprime les principaux thèmes et les interrogations des modernes des années 1930, s'inscrit dans le vaste mouvement des avant-gardes où peintres, architectes et photographes, parfois confondus, travaillent côte à côte dans une communauté d'esprit, où chaque expression s'enrichit du regard de l'autre.

Charlotte Perriand. L'oeuvre complète Volume 3, 1956-1968
Ce troisième volume de l'oeuvre complète (1956-1968) présente le travail de Charlotte Perriand au coeur des Trente Glorieuses, période pendant laquelle son statut de créatrice internationale va se confirmer. Dès 1956, Charlotte Perriand développe une collaboration soutenue avec la galerie Steph Simon, éditeur notamment de ses bibliothèques Nuage. Elle renforce ses liens avec Air France, aménage des agences en Europe, au Japon et au Brésil et conçoit les premiers espaces de travail en open space. A Genève, elle consacre plus de dix ans à la rénovation de l'immense palais des Nations, siège de l'ONU en Europe, pour en faire un outil moderne au service de milliers de diplomates et d'ONG. L'ouvrage illustre également son "art d'habiter" à travers des réalisations comme la résidence de l'ambassadeur du Japon à Paris, la maison du Sahara, son chalet à Méribel, son appartement à Rio de Janeiro, ou encore l'équipement intérieur du pavillon du Brésil à la cité universitaire, à Paris, avec Le Corbusier. Autre pays d'élection de Charlotte Perriand après le Japon, le Brésil, où elle se rend régulièrement de 1959 à 1970, occupe une place importante dans son univers. Elle y noue des liens d'amitié avec Lucio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer et les grandes figures du milieu culturel progressiste. En 1963, elle commence une mission sur le développement de l'artisanat dans le Nordeste, interrompue par le coup d'Etat militaire. Près de 800 documents, pour la plupart inédits, retracent une douzaine d'années de création dans les domaines du mobilier, de l'aménagement et de l'architecture de cette pionnière du design, et préfigurent son travail pour la station des Arcs en Savoie dans les années 70 et 80.

Charlotte Perriand. L'oeuvre complète Volume 2, 1940-1955
Le deuxième volume de l'oeuvre complète de Charlotte Perriand couvre les années de la guerre et de la reconstruction de 1940 à 1955. Invitée en 1940 par le gouvernement japonais en tant que conseillère pour orienter la production dans le domaine de l'équipement de l'habitation, Charlotte Perriand laissera une empreinte profonde dans l'histoire du design japonais, notamment grâce à ses conférences et à deux expositions, «Tradition, sélection, création» (1941) et «Proposition d'une synthèse des arts, Le Corbusier, Fernand Léger, Charlotte Perriand» (1955). Les deux séjours qu'elle effectue au Japon confortent la vision moderniste qu'elle a développée aux côtés de Le Corbusier et Pierre Jeanneret dans les années 30 et nourriront sa créativité dans les décennies suivantes. Charlotte Perriand participe aux grands chantiers de la reconstruction en France et en Afrique, et collabore avec les principaux architectes de l'époque, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Paul Nelson, Jean de Mailly, etc. Elle travaille également avec les Ateliers Jean Prouvé, assure la direction artistique du département meubles et dessine du mobilier, dont les célèbres bibliothèques Mexique et Tunisie et de nombreux autres modèles emblématiques des années 50. Cet ouvrage révèle la volonté d'une créatrice engagée de développer un nouvel «art d'habiter» placé sous le signe de la modernité pour tous et de la synthèse des arts : architecture, peinture et design.

Mon coeur s'accélère. Les chroniques de Charlotte II
Comment faire un voyage spirituel ? C'est après s'être sortie in extremis des griffes d'un pervers narcissique, que Charlotte s'est rendu compte des immenses dangers liés à ce type d'aventure (Cf. Mon coeur au ralenti, Les chroniques de Charlotte). Cela aurait-il mis un frein à sa soif de découverte de l'âme humaine et de son pendant surnaturel ? Pour Charlotte, "rencontre" est le synonyme "d'émerveillement", et la catastrophe psychique qu'elle a sue, jadis, éviter, ne pourrait-elle pas, finalement, n'être que le fait malheureux d'un ensemble de circonstances défavorable ? Le fruit juteux de l'aventure humaine ne saurait-être à ce point ponctué de personnalités destructrices... Car, le monde est beau, et la vie, Charlotte veut toujours la croquer à pleine dents, comme une pomme dont la garantie qu'elle n'est pas empoisonnée reste, en réalité, une donnée inconnue...

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN WORLD HISTORY. An introduction
In modern industrial society, the tic between science and technology seems clear, even inevitable. But historically, as James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn remind us, the connection was far less apparent. For much of human history, technology depended more on the innovation of skilled artisans than it did on the speculation of scientists. Technology as "applied science," the authors argue, emerged relatively recently, as industry and governments began funding scientific research that would lead directly to new or improved technologies. In Science and Technology in World History, McClellan and Dorn offer an introduction to this changing relationship.
McClellan and Dorn review the historical record beginning with the thinking and tool making of prehistoric humans. Neolithic people, for example, developed metallurgy of a sort, using naturally occurring raw copper, and kept systematic records of the moon's phases. Neolithic craftsmen possessed practical knowledge of the behavior of clay, fire, and other elements of their environment, but though they may have had explanations for the phenomena of their crafts, they toiled without any systematic science of materials or the self-conscious application of theory to practice.
Without neglecting important figures of Western science such as Newton and Einstein, the authors demonstrate the great achievements of non-Western cultures. They remind us that scientific traditions took root in China, India, and Central and South America, as well as in a series of Near Eastern empires, during late antiquity and the Middle Ages, including the vast region that formed the Islamic conquest. From this comparative perspective, the authors explore the emergence of Europe as a scientific and technological power. Continuing their narrative through the Manhattan Project, NASA, and modern medical research, the authors weave the converging histories of science and technology into an integrated, perceptive, and highly readable narrative.

Traditional marriage and Christian marriage rites presently exist as two distinct ceremonies in some parts of Africa. Is there no way of bringing the two together to avoid any form of duplication or multiplication of rite ? More so because the Church has always implicitly recognised matrimonial institution as a cultural product. The answer to the above question is located in the whole issue of inculturation. A process that successfully flourished in the Western civilisation and consequently influenced the teaching of the Church on marriage. The answer to our question seeks to establish a marriage rite where couples will genuinely experience the happy marriage between culture and Church. A marriage rite that will fulfil both the traditional and Christian demands.

Fuseli and the Modern Woman. Fashion, Fantasy, Fetishism
This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition devoted to a fascinating group of drawings by the Anglo-Swiss Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), one of eighteenth-century Europe's most idiosyncratic, original and controversial artists. Best known for his notoriously provocative painting The Nightmare, Fuseli energetically cultivated a reputation for eccentricity, with vividly stylised images of supernatural creatures, muscle-bound heroes, and damsels in distress. While these convinced some viewers of the greatness of his genius, others dismissed him as a charlatan, or as completely mad. Fuseli's contemporaries might have thought him even crazier had they been aware that in private he harboured an obsessive preoccupation with the figure of the modern woman, which he pursued almost exclusively in his drawings. Where one might have expected idealised bodies with the grace and proportions of classical statues, here instead we encounter figures whose anatomies have been shaped by stiff bodices, waistbands, puffed sleeves, and pointed shoes, and whose heads are crowned by coiffures of the most bizarre and complicated sort. Often based on the artist's wife Sophia Rawlins, the women who populate Fuseli's graphic work tend to adopt brazenly aggressive attitudes, either fixing their gaze directly on the viewer or ignoring our presence altogether. Usually they appear on their own, in isolation on the page ; sometimes they are grouped together to form disturbing narratives, erotic fantasies that may be mysterious, vaguely menacing, or overtly transgressive, but where women always play a dominant role. Among the many intriguing questions raised by these works is the extent to which his wife Sophia was actively involved in fashioning her appearance for her own pleasure, as well as for the benefit of her husband. By bringing together more than fifty of these studies (roughly a third of the known total), The Courtauld Gallery will give audiences an unprecedented opportunity to see one of the finest Romantic-period draughtsmen at his most innovative and exciting. Visitors to the show and readers of the lavishly illustrated catalogue will further be invited to consider how Fuseli's drawings of women, as products of the turbulent aftermath of the American and French Revolutions, speak to concerns about gender and sexuality that have never been more relevant than they are today. The exhibition showcases drawings brought together from international collections, including the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand, and from other European and North American institutions.

The Gershwin family estates, their publishers, and the University of Michigan have joined forces to produce The George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition-the first-ever scholarly edition of the Gershwins' music and lyrics. This all-new practical edition facilitates both study and performance, giving a wide audience of musicians, scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike greater insight into the Gershwins' art. The goal is to create clear and definitive publications that achieve the most accurate representations possible of the Gershwin brothers' unique and pioneering creativity. This all-new critical edition of the original 1924 arrangement of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue presents an authoritative transcription of arranger Ferde Grofé's handwritten holograph score preserved in the collection of the United States Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The edition represents as best as possible the piece as premiered by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra at his "Experiment in Modern Music" concert on February 12, 1924. Grofé prepared the score for the specific talents and timbres of the Whiteman Orchestra, largely from an ink fair copy of Gershwin's two-piano short-score manuscript. "Contemplation" est un clin d'oeil à la pratique toltèque éponyme. Bien qu'il n'en soit pas explicitement question ici, certaines photographies s'y prêtent à merveille ! Je ne suis pas photographe, j'aime parcourir mes albums photos depuis presque 20 ans et certains clichés me plongent systématiquement dans une humeur différente et le monde change. "Gazing" is a wink to the namesake Toltec practice. Although it is not explicitly discussed here, some of the pictures are perfect for it ! I'm not a photographer, I've been enjoying looking at my photo albums for almost 20 years and some shots always put me in a different mood and the world changes.

Cuckoos, Cowbirds and Other Cheats
Cuckoos and cowbirds are amongst the select bird groups renowned as professional parasites, who always lay their eggs in the nests of other species. Occasional parasitic laying is also widespread in many other birds, who gladly parasitise the nests of their own kind when the opportunity arises.
In this fascinating new book, Nick Davies describes the natural histories of all the brood parasites and examines the exciting questions they raise about the evolution of cheating and the arms race between parasites and their hosts. Brood parasites fill their armoury with adaptations including exquisite egg mimicry, rapid laying, ejection of host eggs, murder of host young, chick mimicry and manipulative begging behaviour: ploys shown by recent research to have evolved in response to host defence behaviour or through competition among the parasites themselves. While many host species appear defenceless, accepting parasite eggs quite unlike their own, others are more discriminating against odd-looking eggs and some have evolved the ability to discriminate against odd-looking chicks as well. How does this arms race proceed? Will defenceless hosts improve their armoury in time, or are there sometimes constraints on hosts which allow the parasites to gain the upper hand? And why are so few species obliged only to lay eggs in host nests? Have host defences limited the success of brood parasitism, or is it in fact much commoner than we suspect, but occurring mainly when birds parasitise the nests of their own kind?
All of these puzzles are examined in descriptions of the natural history of each of the groups of parasites in turn.
