Il est l'heure du thé pour Griffachat. Il remplit un seau d'eau, oh ! c'est trop lourd. Il le renverse presque aussitôt. Une flaque se forme puis l'eau s'allonge, s'allonge, comme un ruisseau jusqu'au prunier. Griffachat cueille des prunes couleur d'eau. C'est l'heure du goûter !

La pavillon de thé
1986. Une nuit d'hiver, à la veille du nouvel an, au coeur d'un vieux quartier perdu de Tokyo, dans le pavillon qu'il a fait construire au fond du jardin de sa maison, un homme pratique en solitaire la cérémonie ancestrale de la Voie du Thé. C'est un Français. Il vit au Japon depuis plus de vingt ans. Jeune diplomate nommé à l'ambassade de France, il a quitté son poste pour un métier plus lucratif, mais qui l'ennuie. Sa vie tourne désormais uniquement autour de la Cérémonie du Thé, qu'il a étudiée avec les plus grands maîtres. Il a aussi entretenu, dans les années soixante, une liaison clandestine avec une Japonaise, descendante d'une lignée prestigieuse de samouraïs, ce qui, dans la tradition nippone, la rend totalement inapprochable. Et quand la jeune femme s'est volatilisée, nul n'a songé à interroger ce Français, ni à sonder ses secrets... jusqu'à présent.

La maison de thé
Jacques Tournier a demandé à Hugo, un enfant de six ans attentif et curieux, de faire avec lui un voyage immobile. Ses questions sur ses souvenirs, ses rencontres, lui ont permis de mesurer ce qui sépare celui qui a presque fini de vivre de celui qui commence à peine. " C'est mon professeur d'innocence et je m'enterre dans sa mémoire. " La maison de thé est la dernière étape d'un parcours de vie, un lieu de paix où l'on se repose avant de se diriger sereinement vers le tombeau. Jacques Tournier s'y est attardé longtemps et a vu certaines images de son passé traverser les portants de toile, d'un mot à un autre, sans ordre chronologique, selon les caprices de sa mémoire. Il a revu ceux qui l'ont accompagné un temps. Des gens de théâtre : Gérard Philipe, Yvonne Printemps et Pierre Fresnay, Suzanne Flon. Il a réentendu le piano de Barbara, regardé de nouveau les toiles de Carpaccio, celles de Toulouse-Lautrec et celles de Chardin, retrouvé à travers la musique de Chopin, George Sand et Nohant, et la voix de Pauline Viardot qui l'ont entraîné vers d'autres voix de femmes. Mais aussi deux écrivains qu'il a découverts mot à mot, en les traduisant : Carson McCullers et Fitzgerald. Une vie de rencontres et de curiosités, celle d'une âme sensible au cœur de son époque.

Quand tout commence, Marie est une jeune femme légère et insouciante. Entre provocations et irrévérence, elle traverse la vie pleine de certitudes et d'assurance. Néanmoins, fragile et sans repères, au fil des rencontres, elle va peu à peu basculer dans la folie amoureuse. Plongée au coeur de la dépression, prisonnière de son amour obsessionnel et de ses névroses elle va devoir trouver en elle les ressources nécessaires à son salut puis à sa reconstruction. Un récit sur le souffle où la seule urgence devient la survie. La tasse de thé nous entraîîe sans complaisance dans les méandres d'un amour psychotique et destructeur. Un voyage dont on ne revient jamais tout à fait indemne !

Le jour de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste, à huit jours des calendes de juillet, en l'an de disgrâce 1348, la Bête immonde à la face hideuse nous avait saisi la main. Après avoir risqué ma vie et celle de mes compains de route à moult reprises, et franchi des obstacles que nous pensions insurmontables, mon fidèle ami, Arnaud de la Vigerie, disparut dans d'étranges circonstances. Je pris le commandement de la place à charge de la mieux remparer pour déboter un assaut anglais. En poursuivant mes investigations sur l'origine criminelle de la pestilence, je fus à nouveau victime de tentatives de meurtre et me heurtai à une épouvantable conspiration du silence. D'aucuns la baillèrent de leur vie dans d'atroces souffrances pour m'avoir mis sur la voie d'un incroyable secret. Alors que j'envisageai de signer le pacte du Diable avec la trop belle châtelaine de Guirande, l'épouse du baron de Beynac, j'appris trois nouvelles stupéfiantes. Des pans entiers de ma vie vacillèrent alors. De grâce, aidez-moi à trancher les têtes de l'Hydre de Lerne et à percer le mystérieux secret de l'Ordre du Temple. Pour découvrir l'emplacement du fabuleux trésor des hérétiques albigeois. Caché depuis plus d'un siècle. En 1978, Hugues de Montalembert a été agressé à New York par deux hommes venus le voler. Lors d'un affrontement violent, l'un d'eux lui a jeté du décapant au visage. En quelques heures, il s'est retrouvé aveugle. Cet ouvrage est le fruit de trente ans de réflexion sur les conséquences de cette nuit-là. Avec une concision et une force remarquables, mêlant la pensée actuelle aux extraits de son journal intime d'alors, l'auteur retrace, sans jamais s'apitoyer sur son sort, ce par quoi il a dû passer : accepter que la vie bascule brutalement, se rééduquer pour retrouver, autant que possible, une existence libre et indépendante, savoir se faire aider mais aussi savoir établir avec les autres une relation dans laquelle sa condition se ferait oublier. De façon étonnante, il a continué à voyager seul à l'autre bout du monde, et même à voir, bien qu'il ait perdu l'usage de ses yeux. Mi-témoignage, mi-essai, ce livre est aussi une méditation inspirée sur les ressources dans lesquelles nous pouvons puiser pour affronter les pires épreuves.

Il pourrait bien s'agir d'un androïde qui se serait émancipé de ses entraves techniques et tenterait d'échapper à tous ceux qui veulent sa perte : nous lirions le récit mouvementé de sa fuite, ses tentatives pour retrouver son âme soeur et la manière impeccable, cruelle et précise, dont il semble franchir tous les pièges dont sa route est semée. Dans ces conditions, il pourrait donc s'agir d'un roman de science-fiction... Mais alors une science-fiction des profondeurs, comme on dit de la psychologie, une science-fiction tout entière montée et jouée dans le corps souffrant d'un pauvre humain qui endure le martyre de l'enfermement en lui-même.

Sète #21. Posidonies, Edition bilingue français-anglais
ImageSingulières est un festival de photographie documentaire créé en 2009 à Sète. Chaque année un photographe est invité à porter son regard sur la ville et à produire une série d'images qui fait l'objet d'un livre. En 2021 la carte blanche est confiée au photographe suisse Hugues de Wurstemberger. Connu pour ses travaux qui soulignent les liens entre humain et territoire - qu'il s'agisse de ses enfants ou de peuples d'Afrique -, c'est à nouveau par le prisme du rapport à la terre qu'il a abordé sa résidence en arpentant les berges des étangs (Thau, Vic, Ingril...). A l'écoute de la nature, sondant les herbes folles des chemins et les posidonies lagunaires jusqu'à l'horizon, il transfigure la banalité de l'ordinaire, celui du quotidien des mareyeurs, grainetiers et autres rêveurs du bassin.

Charles Darwin's Zoology Notes & Specimen Lists from H.M.S. Beagle
Two long sets of scientific notes were made by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. Those transcribed here are concerned with natural history, and although in 1839 he drew on them quite extensively in writing his famous " Journal of Researches ", neither they nor his geology notes have previously been published. He was a superb observer, and recorded vividly and accurately his first impressions of the appearance and behaviour of the wide range of animals, from ants to ostriches, encountered during his travels. Often he performed little experiments on the creatures that he captured, and he was never happy until he had exhaustively explored the why and wherefore of every one of his observations. During the long periods on board ship, he carried out a thorough analysis of hitherto unrecognised features of the internal anatomy of a variety of marine invertebrates, and made elegant pencil drawings of them under his dissecting microscope. The volume also includes his lists of 1 500 specimens preserved in Spirits of Wine, and some 3 500 not in Spirits, with impeccably accurate cross references to the main notes. Although his notes were made strictly for his own use, and were often highly technical, they were well written throughout, and contain many highly readable passages. Only towards the very end of the voyage were his first doubts about the immutability of species consciously pressed, but here are to be found the first seeds of his theory of evolution, and of the important new fields of behavioural and ecological study of which he was one of the principal founders.

Moroccan tracks Volume 11. The sagho djebel
The Sagho djebel is the eastern extension of the Anti-Atlas, a volcanic mountain with granitic mamelons, basaltic organs, chaos of black shales, pink sandstones... at the gates of the Sahara. As far as the eye can see, large wild, arid spaces. A desolate land made for the lonely DPM. And for a thousand miles around, silence is the only companion. Absolute plenitude and the desire to take to the track. From flat expanses to rolling hills, from sharp relief to steep canyons : pure, original nature. The character is strong, rustic but the heart is soft. The colours are soft and gentle. Ochre, pink, brown, violet, the colour chart stretches in a gradation of shimmering pastels, sometimes accompanied by an overwhelming heat. Eldorado in the heart of the desert, rare are the oases ; modest green spots in the infinitely large, they are the reminders that we are on African soil. The wild charm of the Sagho is due to its exceptional geology : high cliffs and steep peaks, tabular escarpments and deep canyons in the middle of which caravans of camels and mules circulate. When you arrive on these immense plateaus, the lunar horizon is so vast that you want to go everywhere at once to see if it is really as beautiful elsewhere ! The Sagho also surprises by the richness of its lights : limpid like those of the nearby Sahara, or sometimes in half-tone, as in the neighbouring Dades valley. The Sagho is also the Morocco of the last Berber nomads, descendants of the ancient lords Aït Atta. In autumn, after leaving the snows of the High Atlas, they set up their dark wool tents on the slopes of the jebel until spring. They can neither read nor write, but they are sure of their way through the Atlas Mountains and the Moroccan desert. In the Sagho, they have built houses of unbaked stone, dug wells, planted almond trees, grown wheat, barley and various vegetables. Others built herds of goats and sheep, and caravans of camels. Towards the Sun. The Artist - Traveller at the Turn of the Twentieth Century
Bien qu'il y ait eu des monographies sur les artistes voyageurs britanniques du XVIIIème et du début du XIXème siècles, il n'existe aucune enquête de ce que l'écrivain Henry Blackburn décrivait de "voyage artistique" un siècle plus tard. A partir de 1900, le "Grand Touriste" est devenu un globe-trotteur muni d'un appareil photo et, malgré le développement de la photographie instantanée, l'enregistrement visuel immédiat en huile et aquarelle reste le plus répandu. Kenneth McConkey's exciting new book explores the complex reasons for this in a series of chapters that take the reader from southern Europe to north Africa, the Middle East, India and Japan revealing many artist-travellers whose lives and works are scarcely remembered today. He alerts us to a generation of painters, trained in academies and artists' colonies in Europe that acted as crèches for those would go on to explore life and landscape further afi eld. The seeds of wanderlust were sown in student years in places where tuition was conducted in French or German, and models were often Spanish, Italian, or North African. At fi rst the countries of western Europe were explored afresh and cities like Tangier became artists' haunts. Training that prioritized plein air naturalism led to the common belief that a well-schooled young painter should be capable of working anywhere, and in any circumstances. At the height of British Imperial power, and facilitated by engineering and technological advance, the burgeoning tourism and travel industry rippled into the production of specialist goods and services that included a dedicated publishing sector. Essential to this phenomenon, the artist-traveller was often commissioned by London dealers to supply themed exhibitions that coincided with contracts for colour-illustrated books recording those exotic parts of the world that were newly available to the tourist, traveller, explorer, emigrant, or colonial civil servant. These works were not, however, value-neutral, and in some instances, they directly address Orientalism, Imperialism, and the Post-Colonial, in pictures that hybridize, or mimic indigenous ways of life. Behind each there is a range of interesting questions. Does experience live up to expectation ? Is the street more desirable than the ancient ruin or sacred site ? How were older ideas of the 'picturesque' reborn in an age when 'Grand Tours' once confi ned to Italy, now encompassed the globe ? McConkey's wideranging survey hopes to address some of these issues. This richly illustrated book explores key sites visited by artist-travellers and investigates artists including Frank Brangwyn, Mary Cameron, Alfred East, John Lavery, Arthur Melville, Mortimer Menpes, as well as other under-researched British artists. Drawing the strands together, it redefi nes the picturesque, by considering issues of visualization and verisimilitude, dissemination and aesthetic value.

The Christian theology of religions at present faces a crisis. What precisely is the task of the theology of religions ? Does it merely consist in interpreting the non-Christian religions as steps, phases or contributions in the light of Christianity ? Has one from the theological side conceded the maximum to the non-Christian religions by acknowledging them as anonymous Christianity (Karl Rahner)? This study is an exploration on how one shall liberate the religion of the other from anonymity : how one shall leave the other with his/her own name. The model of thought employed in this study is gained through an analysis of the intercultural process of understanding, explained with instances from Africa and South America.

I started writing "Acacia thorn in my heart" after reading the book of a white South African woman about her childhood in the same region as mine but relating a completely different experience. She had maids, her father drove her to school and she played with real toys. I lived in the heart of the country, away from everything and had to walk five miles to go to school. I was born in Natal. My father rented a plot of land from a white owner to do market gardening. Although Indian families tended not to educate daughters, our parents decided that education was a priority for us. Despite financial difficulties, they were able to send us to school. We had to get up at five o'clock in order to catch the school train. In winter, as we were scantily clad, we shivered all the way to the station.

Harlem Blues. Langston Hughes et la poétique de la Renaissance afro-américaine
A l'origine écrites en 1943 pour l'hebdomadaire The Chicago Dcfender avant d'apparaître dans le New York Post de manière régulière, les histoires de Jesse Simple furent immédiatement appréciées des Afro-Américains. Bien que recensées parmi les "Cent Livres du Siècle" par la New York Library, ces histoires restent largement méconnues du public français. Les histoires de cet Ingénu de Harlem prirent forme une vingtaine d'années après la Renaissance de Harlem (1924-1930), cette révolution artistique qui révéla de nombreux poètes et écrivains noirs. Langston Hughes choisit ce contexte tout en évoquant le Sud, l'Afrique, le folklore et le blues pour donner naissance à son personnage le plus emblématique : Jess B Simple. Dans ce récit où s'enchevêtrent réalisme et poésie, apparence et réalité, signifiant et signifié, jazz et blues, humour et caricature, Hughes passe de la réalité vécue à la fiction pour offrir un regard de l'intérieur de cette période faste de l'histoire culturelle américaine et évoquer les vicissitudes des Noirs les plus humbles. Living in Two Worlds
This is a study of Singapore pastors' worldview & understanding of the epidemiology, symptomatology and management of possession behaviour. The pastors' accounts are compared with those from the scientific disciplines, and convergences and divergences noted. Factors shaping both the pastors' and the scientific discourses are examined. The pastors are shown to respond to competing scientific paradigms by reinforcing their two-worlds worldview. They either live mainly in the other world, or in each world at a time, or between the two worlds. Based on theological reflection focusing on epistemology, theodicy & cosmology, the author shows that the paradigm of living in both worlds simultaneously is the most appropriate pastoral response. The theological vision of the coexisting worlds and the pastoral task of unmasking and resisting evil in all its varieties and depths are then discussed.

Ancient Greek by Its Translators
When not familiar with the language itself, most readers over the centuries have had access to the ancient Greek texts only or mostly through (Latin or vernacular) translations. Such an approach is not only indirect and mediated, but also distorted and even impoverishing : meaning then prevails over the linguistic form and substance of the texts themselves. What do later or modern readers read when they read translated texts written in an ancient so-called dead language ? They read a given meaning - sometimes unfaithful, often inaccurate - dictated by a genuine understanding, the blind continuation of tradition, or an untold hidden intention. The complex range of significances conveyed by meaning simultaneously reflects the time and space (called synchrony) of when and where a text has been translated, the historical learning and linguistic skills of the translators, as well as their ideas and style. As a contribution to the perennial debate about translation (mere literary transliteration vs. creative transposition), this volume aims at analyzing some striking cases of various (literary or not) texts translated from ancient Greek showing how much for the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries aesthetics and ideology matter as much as - and often even more than - rigorous philology.

Les thés meurtriers d'Oxford Tome 2 : Beau thé fatal
Qu'est-ce qui a bien pu passer par la tête de Gemma d'aller au vernissage d'une exposition d'art contemporain d'Oxford ? Elle déteste toutes ces toiles prétentieuses et elle s'ennuie ferme... Jusqu'à ce que l'une des invitées, après avoir avalé une tasse de thé, se mette à convulser et tombe raide morte. Empoisonnée. Shocking ! Voilà qui fait tache dans cette galerie chic à l'ambiance minimaliste et feutrée. Dare-dare, Gemma flaire l'assassinat. D'autant qu'il y a une ombre au tableau : le propriétaire de la galerie ne pouvait pas voir la victime en peinture ! Aidée d'un charmant inspecteur et de quatre vieilles commères, Gemma plonge dans un mystère plus complexe qu'un plum pudding. Et surtout plus dangereux, car elle pourrait bien être la prochaine sur la liste du tueur...
