Sur la page blanche, pour l'instant, un seul titre se détache : Des mondes meilleurs. Mais on apprend qu'Henri, son opposant le plus dangereux, a disparu et la rumeur s'installe peu à peu... Sur fond de crise économique, d'insatisfaction conjugale et de désir éperdu de croquettes de crevettes, s'imbriquent vies privées et destins politiques. Shakespeare is dead, get over it ! : C'est l'histoire d'une rencontre amoureuse : celle de William (antimondialiste convaincu) et d'Anna (actrice shakespearienne convaincante) que le hasard ou le destin dispose côte à côte lors d'une rétrospective des films de Jean-Luc Godard. Le cheminement d'amants ayant connu trop d'histoires d'amour nous mène, à travers réalités et fictions, des grottes de Hotton à Prague, de Stratford-upon-Avon à Bruxelles ou Berlin ou Beijing. Cette pièce hors du commun ressemble étrangement à la confession, en multiplex, d'enfants de notre siècle.

Der träumende Held. Untersuchungen zum Traum in der Literatur
Travaillant sur une multitude de rêves fictifs, Wilhelm Richard Berger met en évidence des structures mentales modernes, de Jean Paul à Arno Schmidt, de Novalis à Thomas Mann. En contraste avec la compréhension mantique du rêve qui est celle de l'antiquité et du monde oriental (par exemple chez Homère ou dans l'Ancien Testament), il décrit le rêve comme une orientation croissante vers la subjectivité du Moi moderne. Depuis E. T. A. Hoffmann, les individus, détachés de tous les points de référence métaphysiques, font exclusivement des rêves du domaine privé, alimentés par le subconscient. Aussi bien la vision symbolique qu'également le rêve post freudien d'accomplissement des souhaits ont perdu toute dimension prophétique et renvoient, au lieu de cela, de manière récurrente aux 'restes du quotidien' et événements vécus du passé qui n'ont pas été retravaillés. Prenant appui sur l'interprétation des rêves de Freud, Berger fait apparaître la motivation psychologique du rêve dans le déroulement de l'action de divers romans. Le centre de gravité de cette étude, qui déborde largement le cadre de la discipline, est constitué par la réflexion sur la question de savoir par quels moyens du domaine de la technique narrative les auteurs parviennent à transposer dans la logique discursive du mot ce phénomène essentiellement visuel qu'est le rêve.

The chapters of this book vindicate this claim ; bringing together thinkers different both in temperament and interests like Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Aquinas, Heidegger and Gadamer they suggest that some of their major tenets reflect conceptual assumptions concerning linguistic meaning and reference. In trying to both identify and elucidate the assumptions at stake the author shows, both historically and systematically, that some of the problems experienced in the past as well as much of our contemporary concern with the same issue form a continuous line and a common endeavour ; and they have not yet come to an end.

Reducing Disparity in Judicial Sentencing:- A Social-Psychological Approach
Researchers from diverse disciplines - e.g. sociologists, criminologists, political scientists, legal observers, and most recently also psychologists - have repeatedly observed that the unguided use of discretion has frequently led to vast disparity in judicial sentencing, i.e. large variations among sentences given for highly similar offenders and/or offenses. Employing a social-psychological perspective, this controlled experiment demonstrates the disparity reducing effect of discussion in sentencing councils. The report also critically analyzes the validity issues inherent in socialpsychological experimentation on legal decision-making.

A linguistic picture of women's position in society
A discussion of English and Polish gender systems, generic words, forms of address, referring expressions and other topics, provides evidence that in these two languages males and females are not treated equally. The main concern of this book is linguistic sexism. The data indicate that speakers of both languages treat male as the norm, attribute less desirable qualities to the speech and behaviour of women, stereotype women more than men, or simply make women linguistically invisible members of society.

As is the usual case in all criticism of analytic philosophers against traditional philosophy, word usage must be limited to what the human mind can know. The notion of timeless knowledge for example contradicts our normal mode of word usage and cannot serve as adequate in reference to knowledge be it that of man or of God. If timeless knowledge applied to divine mode of knowing then there cannot be human freedom.

Variation and Diachrony, with Early American English in Focus
This study of diachronic variation addresses two topics, the development of modal auxiliaries can (could), may (might), shall (should) and will (would), and the emergence of early American English as a new variety in the seventeenth century. Within the framework of socio-historical variation analysis, the author aims at accounting for diachronic change by examining the interplay of various linguistic and extra-linguistic factors in the light of evidence drawn from various corpora. The study concentrates on the language spoken and written in the New England area between 1620 and 1720, but to widen the scope in time and region, counterparts for comparison are found in the material included in the Helsinki Corpus of English Texts. The results indicate a gradual change (rather than a sudden re-structuring) in the system of the English modals from early stages on. Cumulative evidence is found for the rise of the forms can and will ; in early American English conservative (rather than innovative) tendencies characterize the development.

Frontier and Utopia in the Fiction of Charles Sealsfield
This study examines the work of Charles Sealsfield (1793-1864), the Moravian-American writer, whose fiction marked the first serious literary treatment of America in the German language. More specifically, Sealsfield's work is discussed in the light of his experience in America and, above all, in the light of his change of identity from Karl Anton Postl - Moravian monk to Charles Sealsfield - American writer. It employs two concepts - frontier and utopia - to show how Sealsfield was influenced by the antebellum tradition in America, and how he, in turn, used the governing myths and symbols of his time to create an important statement about the relationship between ideology and power in the Age of Jackson.

"Friendship and Love in the Middle English Metrical Romances" groups together a representative cross-section of the genre, according to variants of love relationships, and to ideas of friendship. The horizontal and the vertical structure of the relatonship are tripartite. The horizontal stages are attraction, separation-testing-trial, and reunion, the vertical spheres are the personal, social/political, and religious. All relationships fail into two types, the restorative-concordant and the innovative-discordant. These are defined by the relative position of the partners in the social-political sphere of their relationship. The groups of relationship are defined by the initially more active partner : forward heroine, fairy mistress, forward hero, mutual love, married love ; friendship, lords and retainers. Surveys of the Insular understanding of courtly love, and of Caxton's prose romances, complement the findings.

The Regulation of Rental Contracts in the Housing Market
In many countries (part of) the rental housing market is subject to regulations concerning determination of rent and security of tenure. The author provides fresh theoretical analysis of these measures by taking into account special features of the housing market, like indivisibility, mobility cost and incomplete contracts. The impact a rent ceiling has on contracting, the allocation of the housing stock, rationing cost and on rents in the free housing sector is examined. In some cases tenure laws provide for tenure security and rules for the updating of rent while leaving the initial rent for new leases freely negotiable. The analysis shows that the efficiency of the market could be improved through this type of regulation.

Black and White Speech in the Southern United States
This study compares the pronunciation of the stressed vowel nuclei of black and white southerners interviewed for the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States. The informants from Maryland (two pairs), Virginia (seven pairs), and North Carolina (seven pairs), were all interviewed in the period 1933-1939 by a single field worker, Guy S. Lowman, Jr., and were matched as closely as possible for age, education, social class, and geographical proximity. The principal findings of the study are that systematic differences exist between black and white speakers in the pronunciation of the stressed vowels, on the phonic or subphonemic level. This is the same type of variation that is used to characterize dialect differences in the United States. The differences in speech, however, while systematic, are not categorical : i.e., there are no speech features examined that exist solely for black or white speakers. Another finding was that regional variation in speech was less apparent for black speakers than for white speakers.

This book assembles the revised papers of an international conference and thus offers a comprehensive comparative overview of the participation and litigation rights of environmental associations in Europe. This is supplemented by a compilation of the relevant statutory law in force. Besides the legal background, the focus of interest is above all on practical experience with participation and litigation rights from the point of view of the environmental associations.The contributions show that the effectivity of group actions is extremely high. In none of the analysed countries were there the slightest indications of any undue strain being placed on the judicial system by this instrument. There can be no doubt that the participation and litigation rights of environmental organizations are important instruments in reducing the enforcement deficit in environmental protection. With a view to the fact that Europe is growing more and more into one entity, the need of participation of environmental NGO's on the European level becomes a pressing necessity.

1992 - the quincentenary of the "discovery" of America by Columbus - for the participants of the Greifswald conference this did not mean to celebrate but to reflect on the effects and consequences of this clash of cultures. The conference dealt with questions and problems of intercultural relations, racism and multiculturalism in North America and Great Britain. Various papers analyze the achievements of minorities and their contributions to an increasing understanding of minority-majority relationships. Examples range from the general (Native American literature in the USA, women writers) to the specific (Canadian Métis, problems of Pakistani children in Lancashire).

Tiepolo in Milan. The Lost Frescoes of Palazzo Archinto
Tiepolo in Milan : The Lost Frescoes of Palazzo Archinto brings together preparatory drawings and paintings, as well as documentary photographs, to commemorate an extraordinary fresco cycle by the Venetian painter Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770). Painted for Palazzo Archinto in Milan, the frescoes were destroyed in a bombing during World War II. The catalogue accompanies an exhibition at The Frick Collection. In 1730-31, Tiepolo undertook his first significant project outside the Veneto, frescoes for five ceilings in Palazzo Archinto in Milan. The paintings were commissioned by Count Carlo Archinto (1670-1732), likely in honor of the marriage of his son, Filippo, to Giulia Borromeo. Tiepolo's mythological and allegorical scenes-Triumph of Arts and Sciences ; Apollo and Phaëton ; Perseus and Andromeda ; Juno, Fortune, and Venus ; and Nobility-were painted in some of the largest rooms of the palazzo. Unfortunately, the palazzo was bombed during World War II and its interior completely destroyed. Only a series of black-and-white photographs, taken between 1897 and the late 1930s, preserves the frescoes' appearance, but a number of preparatory drawings and paintings provide precious information, including three painted sketches (Triumph of Arts and Sciences, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon ; Apollo and Phaëton, Los Angeles County Museum ; and Perseus and Andromeda, The Frick Collection). Three drawings from the British Museum in London, the Museo Civico in Trieste, and the Sinebrychoff Art Museum in Helsinki are the only related graphic works. These-along with other drawings and prints by Tiepolo and some books- have been reunited for the first time in order to bring to life these extraordinary works of art. On view at The Frick Collection from April 16 to July 14, 2019, the exhibition is curated by Xavier F. Salomon, Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator at the Frick, with Andrea Tomezzoli, Professor at the University of Padua, and Denis Ton, Curator of the Musei Civici in Belluno. Included in the publication are essays on Tiepolo's work in Palazzo Archinto (Salomon), on the role of the frescoes in Tiepolo's career (Tomezzoli), on the intellectual world of the Archinto family (Ton), and on the architectural history of the palace (Kluzer).

De mon exclusion du système scolaire à ma carrière professionnelle, je veux témoigner de mon parcours et dénoncer les injustices tout en portant l'espoir que les mentalités évoluent et que le handicap et plus largement la différence soient pleinement intégrés dans notre société.

Si l'interdisciplinarité constitue l'interrogation fondamentale posée dans cet ouvrage, elle y est abordée à travers le prisme de interdisciplinarité, manière nouvelle d'interroger des champs de connaissance et de pratique d'origines diverses dans une démarche de pensée collective. Il ne s'agit ni d'un ouvrage didactique, ni d'une description méthodologique systématique proposant une recette immédiatement applicable, mais plutôt de l'exploration des pistes offertes par un cheminement intellectuel original, inspiré par l'idée qu'au point de départ de l'interdisciplinarité se trouve une réflexion critique sur sa propre discipline. Les chemins explorés dans cet état d'esprit se doivent de diverger quelque peu par leurs colorations disciplinaires, pour se rejoindre dans l'esquisse d'une manière nouvelle de concevoir les objets de recherche à partir des décalages, des incompréhensions et des méconnaissances souvent inhérents au dialogue entre différents domaines du savoir.

La filière noire. Dynamiques du polar "¨made in Africa"
Alors qu'il fait le bonheur de lecteurs amateurs de littérature populaire en Europe et en Amérique depuis sa naissance au dix-neuvième siècle, le roman policier débarque en Afrique un siècle plus tard où il connaît aujourd'hui un développement spectaculaire. Apanage de quelques auteurs spécialisés au départ, il est désormais pratiqué par tous, y compris par des auteurs issus de la littérature majusculée, connus pour d'autres inspirations. L'engouement pour ce genre – pourtant marginal mais qui a désormais droit de cité – ne s'explique pas seulement par le fait qu'il offre de singulières perspectives sur l'homo africanus vu à travers le prisme d'une réalité criminelle; il marque tout aussi bien la volonté des polaristes africains de s'investir dans le genre et de le renouveler tant par la mise en exergue de problématiques culturelles inhérentes à la sociologie de leur environnement que par l'exploitation du potentiel illimité des ressources d'une narrativité orale. Telle est ici dressée la cartographie d'un territoire jusque-là inconnu, mais qu'arpentent sans complexe les auteurs de cette filière noire, membres à part entière de la grande famille du polar.

La maison individuelle est l'habitat préféré des Français. Cet ouvrage présente 40 maisons construites par des architectes entre 2000 et 2020 qui rendent compte de toutes les tendances architecturales des vingt dernières années en France. Les maisons sont réparties en cinq thèmes : les maisons écologiques, les maisons de ville, la quête esthétique, la tradition réinventée et l'inspiration industrielle. Alors que nous sommes confrontés à une crise de civilisation industrielle et à une mondialisation devenue chaotique, il nous faut réouvrir les champs du possible. C'est ce que nous propose Jean-Joseph Boillot avec ce voyage en utopies. Voyage dans l'histoire longue et universelle des utopies et des grandes traditions culturelles : taoïsme, bouddhisme, esprit des griots, christianisme social... Voyage aussi sur les pas de l'auteur, qui nous entraîne à la rencontre des utopies concrètes, de l'agroécologie indienne à l'esprit coopératif africain en passant par les montagnes sacrées chinoises jusqu'à son petit village normand. De cette double traversée intellectuelle et géographique, Jean-Joseph Boillot tire une typologie commune et des leçons. Et si l'utopie du XXIe siècle était tout simplement celle de la sagesse ? Le soir du monde. L'an mil en Lorraine
A l'automne 999, Guillaume, neveu de l'évêque de Metz Adalbéron, rentre en Lotharingie. Il a accompagné l'empereur germanique Otton III parti s'installer à Rome dont il a fait sa capitale. Il découvre une contrée isolée, en proie à la peur suscitée par les rumeurs de fin du monde, tandis qu'une inquiétante procession emmène une foule d'hérétiques, de déshérités et d'esprits terrorisés vers un futur incertain. Les abbayes d'Epinal, de Bouxières et surtout de Gorze, qui rayonne alors sur l'Europe entière, les châteaux de Dieulouard et de Sierck... sont le théâtre d'étranges confrontations et de controverses théologiques auxquelles participent érudits lotharingiens, irlandais, lombard et souabes, sous le regard intéressé de voisins avides de richesses plus terrestres. A cette époque, malgré ses reliques et ses miracles, le clergé catholique peine à évincer les croyances populaires, toujours empreintes de magie.
