Les inventeurs. Essai
What do Christopher Columbus, Reneke, Zénobe Gramme and Louis Pasteur have in common ? They were all inventors. Well fine, but who invented the crab's claw, the suction cups and the flight of squids or the proboscis of blood sucking insects ? Is invention intellectual fantasy, an industrial tool or a fundamental biological reaction ? How is this riddle to be solved ? Should we go through the list of inventions or inventors ? Is it a question of circumstances or motivations ? Who is in charge ? The Material or the Spirit ? In order to try to find a way of answering these questions, first a few very different inventors and their inventions will be presented. A few paradoxes emerge from this first part. Then we will devote an entire chapter to an exceptional inventor whose extraordinary work revolutionized how we now approach this topic. Finally, what can be said about all the inventions like the wings of birds or butterflies, the eyes of fish or insects, the leaves of trees or the social organization of beehives ? In these cases, man is not the inventor. There are countless marvels like these in the world around us. Can we explain them ? This will be the subject of the third part of this essay.

To be or not to be, Ernst Lubitsch. Un classique dans l'histoire
To Be Or Not To Be a suscité une abondante littérature critique au cours de ces trente dernières années, et la récente mise au programme du film au baccalauréat a accru encore cette production. Mais le film d'Ernst Lubitsch est une matière inépuisable, surtout lorsqu'on l'approche avec un faisceau de méthodes capables de révéler ce qui était jusqu'ici resté dans l'ombre. Le lecteur amateur ou spécialiste, l'enseignant et l'étudiant de cinéma trouveront dans ce livre non seulement tout ce qu'on attend d'une étude du film en termes d'histoire, d'esthétique, de style, de contenu, mais ils trouveront bien davantage, grâce à des spécialistes d'histoire, d'histoire culturelle, de sociologie, de génétique, de philosophie, d'études germaniques. Tous analysent le film avec la précision critique qu'on devrait toujours attendre de la passion cinéphilique. Le sociologue Jean-Marc Leveratto nous révèle ainsi la version radiophonique du film, grâce à laquelle Lubitsch entrait dans le quotidien du grand public américain de l'époque. Jean-Pierre Esquénazi examine tout ce qui inscrit To Be Or Not Be dans la descendance du Dictateur, mais aussi tout ce qui l'en sépare ; Clélia Zernik passe pour sa part le film au filtre du thème de la répétition envisagée comme un motif philosophique. Le film a souvent été étudié sous l'angle de la théâtralité, mais l'influence du célèbre couple de théâtre formé par Alfred Lunt et Lynn Fontanne n'avait jamais jusqu'ici été étudié de façon aussi détaillée que le fait Marguerite Chabrol, comme une matrice possible du couple formé par Joseph et Maria Tura. Le riche point de vue de François Genton et Matthias Steinle permet d'approcher le versant germanique du film, parfois sacrifié à sa dimension de comédie "américaine". La question de l'engagement des Etats-Unis dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale est de nouveau mise sur le métier : Katalin Por examine en détail le contexte d'écriture et de production du film, Alain Kleinberger brosse un panorama des comédies qui constituent le cadre culturel, générique et cinématographique du film de Lubitsch, Jacqueline Nacache se demande si Lubitsch avait pour but d'expliquer le nazisme ou d'en exposer l'incompréhensible nature. Enfin, le film étant proposé à l'analyse des lycéens, Barbara Laborde examine le film à la lumière de la nouvelle épreuve du baccalauréat et en déploie les ressources esthétiques et théoriques que permet la confrontation des photogrammes. Au terme de cette lecture, on n'aura certes pas fini de découvrir tous les sens, exposés ou voilés, de ce film exceptionnel. Mais To Be Or Not To Be apparaîtra sous un nouveau jour à tous ceux qui l'aiment et l'admirent depuis longtemps, et ne manquera pas d'émerveiller ceux qui le découvrent et l'analysent pour la première fois.

Changer de vie pour changer le monde. 2000. Bien qu'Anne soit enceinte, Florian ne lâche pas son rêve : suivre l'appel de la Terre et monter une ferme en agriculture biologique. Chef d'oeuvre d'Ernst Lubitsch, To be or not to be est une démonstration de virtuosité technique, un sommet de la production hollywoodienne de l'âge d'or. Au-delà des stars qu'il mobilise, il représente l'aboutissement d'un savoir-faire collectif : l'imagination de Melchior Lengyel, la photographie de Rudolf Maté, la musique de Werner Heyman, le métier et les accents de Félix Bressart et de Sig Ruman, les seconds rôles fétiches de Lubitsch, contribuent à la construction de sa qualité artistique singulière. Mais To be or not to be est aussi bien plus que cela. Il donne une leçon d'humanité, fondée sur le plaisir de jouer avec la réalité qu'offrent le théâtre et le cinéma. L'approche anthropologique, ici, aide à mieux comprendre la forme de résistance esthétique à la barbarie que propose ce film, et surtout la manière dont il fait du rire une arme de dénonciation de la violence des Nazis et, au delà, de toute forme de totalitarisme. WHY SEX MATTERS. A Darwinian Look at Human Behavior
Why are men, like other primate usually the aggressors and risk takers? Why do women typically have fewer sexual partners? Why is killing infants routine in some cultures, but forbidden in others? Why is incest everywhere taboo? Bobbi Low ranges from ancient Rome to modern America, from the Amazon to the Arctic, and from single-celled organisms to international politics to show that these and many other questions about human behavior largely come down to evolution and sex. More precisely, as she shows in this uniquely comprehensive and accessible survey of behavioral and evolutionary ecology, they come down to the basic principle that all organisms evolved to maximize their reproductive success and seek resources to do so.
Low begins by reviewing the fundamental arguments and assumptions of behavioral ecology: selfish genes, conflicts of interest, and the tendency for sexes to reproduce through different behaviors. She explains why in primate species-from chimpanzees and apes to humans-males seek to spread their genes by devoting extraordinary efforts to finding mates, while females find it profitable to expend more effort on parenting. Low illustrates these sexual differences among humans by showing that in places as diverse as the parishes of nineteenth-century Sweden, the villages of seventeenth-century China, and the forests of twentieth-century Brasil, men have tended to seek power and resources, from cattle to money, to attract mates, while women have sought a secure environment for raising children. She makes it clear, however, they have not done so simply through individual efforts or in a vacuum, but that men and women act in complex ways that involve cooperation and coalition building and that are shaped by culture, technology, tradition, and the availability of resources. Low also considers how file evolutionary drive to
acquire resources leads to environmental degradation and warfare and asks whether our behavior could be channeled in more constructive ways.
Why Sex Matters is a compelling work of biology, sociology, and anthropology and a penetrating study of the deep motivations that underlie individual and social behavior.

In the modern world, computer systems are playing a greater and greater part in everyday life. From office work, to entertainment, to providing information, the personal computer is quickly becoming a more integral part of the home. However, most PC users have no idea how most of the parts which make up their computer work internally. I am one of those who find that the framework provided by the school curriculum in the United Kingdom is of great assistance in planning lessons and learning plans but the curriculum does not plan out the work for us. We therefore need to invest a lot of time and effort into developing schemes of work that will suit the people we are going to teach. For me, it is a fantastic opportunity to employ our imagination and creativity to make lessons useful and interesting for children of different abilities. It is why I wrote this book. This book is a foundation course for Advanced Computer Studies and designed as a blueprint to teach users with a basic knowledge of computer science. Computer science is a subject that combines the use of technology which is ICT (Information Communication Technology) and the creation of technology. To use ICT (the subject about how to use technology to communicate information) more effectively, we need to know how technology works. Computing or computer science will create a generation of young people able to work at the forefront of technology change. It is the umbrella term for the subject that comprises 3 elements : computer science, information technology and digital literacy. It is helpful to think of these as the foundations, applications and implications of digital technology. The new focus on computer science will provides a well-defined and rigorous academic discipline and a unique lens through which pupils can understand the world. Children must therefore be taught computing if they are to be ready for tomorrow technology challenges. Our ingenuity to invent new means of communicating with each other, our very human compulsion to communicate have driven the technological innovations of the past two centuries however still a lot remain to be done with the arrival of quantum computing. A more rigorous approach to computer science teaching will help compete across the full spectrum of digital industries. This can only be achieved by equipping ourselves with the foundation skills, knowledge and understanding of computing do the necessity to introduce "computational thinking" at school via the new national curriculum (programmes of study and targets), the 2014 national curriculum that introduces computing which will replace ICT.

The Transcultural Dictionary of Misunderstandings. European and Chinese Horizons is the result of an initiative which forges a radically new path for promoting transcultural understanding by studying culture-bound keywords. The stimulating idea is to create and address with intention that which is generally held to be by all means avoided : namely, misunderstandings. The experiment starts with a level of communication that is not political per se but cultural. Cultures have no rigid borders like nation-states. They are more dynamic and meandering, open to influence, and translatable. Like cultures themselves, keywords are saturated with history, long-term experience, values, and collective emotions. They carry a load of tacit knowledge and implicit axioms that have the advantage of not having to be unpacked, explained, or spelled out. Working through various semantic layers of keywords on both sides helps to create a more transparent language for transcultural dialogue. The creation of such a language is the effect of producing, exchanging, and working through misunderstandings on both sides. Within the framework of transcultural dialogue, misunderstandings turn out to be an innovative tool for mutual learning by seeing oneself through the eyes of the other. It is high time for researchers in various parts of the world to join forces and translate basic concepts from one language and culture into another. Every translation is a transformation, marking similarities and differences which can lead to an uncovering of new ideas, values, and cultural practices. This unconventional dialogue is a great source of inspiration because it works through hardened assumptions and misrepresentations, unsettles schematic thinking, and leads to unexpected insights and new points of contact. Poland attracts foreign investment. This holds also true for foreign enterprises involved in waste management. In order to do efficiently and successfully waste management-related business in Poland, it is of great importance to get acquainted with the following issues : general waste management situation, market conditions and business openings for waste management firms, and the legal framework governing waste management in Poland. Given that Poland hopes to be admitted to the European Union by the turn of the coming century, co-ordination and harmonization of the different national waste management programs are imperative. Therefore, for comparative reasons, the German waste management system and the waste management policies in the European Union are discussed as well.

And then all of a sudden he stopped travelling... He got a month ago a big long hat that belongs to the greatest witch that lived during the middle ages, "Moje Gayla". In fact, after being burned by the church, one of her relatives kept her belongings inside a wooden box... and in the twentieth century one of her grandchildren donated the box to "The Magic Square Museum" in London. Genius bought the hat at a public auction as an art relic to decorate one of his rooms. Could this weird neighbor be the reason of Socrates' psychological trauma ? Or maybe he is the one who will cure him ? And what has the hat to do with all this ?

J'y avais entassé un chandail, mon rasoir électrique, une brosse à dents, du papier à lettres, des photos et sans doute quelques bricoles dont j'ai perdu le souvenir. "
