The book addresses the question of whether, in an age of internationalisation and globalisation, cultural differences are still relevant to German-Irish corporate relationships ? The first three chapters establish the theoretical framework for the analysis by exploring the notion of culture, profiling the business cultures of both countries, and examining existing approaches to the study of parent company-foreign subsidiary relationships. In the following three chapters, using interviews carried out with two sample groups (fifteen German parent companies and fourteen of their Irish operations ; seven Irish parent companies and nine of their German operations), the parent companies in both groups are examined to see whether they demonstrate characteristics which are in keeping with their national business cultures. Their foreign operations are then analysed as is the parent company-foreign subsidiary relationship to determine whether any parent company influences are visible. The general approaches adopted by the two groups of parent companies to their foreign operations are compared and contrasted. Finally differences in national attitudes and values are identified and their impact assessed.

Ascidians are common marine animals present on all types of substrata but abundant and highly diversified in warm oceans. They represent a large portion of the underwater pictures taken by divers of the ORSTOM center in Noumea. One millimeter to some decimeters in size, cryptic or brightly coloured, motionless, often in the shade, ascidians are not well known, but are present everywhere. They are surprising not only in their variable shapes but also in their unique biological characteristics. They represent the boundary between invertebrates and vertebrates, although the adults look like stones or sponges. With a beautiful selection of photographs, the authors discuss the essential anatomy, the modes of budding, the pigments, and the spicules. The ecological requirements are detailed and symbionts, parasites and predators are reviewed. The relationship with man concerns fouling species on ships, their use as food end as a source of pharmacological products. The final section provides a key for the identification of the most common or spectacular species.

"Friendship and Love in the Middle English Metrical Romances" groups together a representative cross-section of the genre, according to variants of love relationships, and to ideas of friendship. The horizontal and the vertical structure of the relatonship are tripartite. The horizontal stages are attraction, separation-testing-trial, and reunion, the vertical spheres are the personal, social/political, and religious. All relationships fail into two types, the restorative-concordant and the innovative-discordant. These are defined by the relative position of the partners in the social-political sphere of their relationship. The groups of relationship are defined by the initially more active partner : forward heroine, fairy mistress, forward hero, mutual love, married love ; friendship, lords and retainers. Surveys of the Insular understanding of courtly love, and of Caxton's prose romances, complement the findings.

In this book English heterophonous/paronomasic/puns are investigated from a metaphonological perspective. I look into the ways and methods of native speakers' self-conscious metalinguistic manipulation of their phonological system/s/, as exemplified in punning. A phonostatistic analysis of nearly 4000 English puns is attempted in testing a hypothesis that the phonological representations accessed and generated in punning are significantly different from those used in 'ordinary' speech encoding. Comparisons are carried out against phoneme frequency distributions of running speech and those of spontaneous errors.In speech play, competence mechanisms are accessed which differ from structural competence à la Chomsky.

The 18 investigations collected in this volume, 4 of which are published for the first time, represent a cross section of the research in German baroque literature by the American scholar, Blake Lee Spahr. Individual issues of "German Baroque Literature" are discussed from a broad perspective, while specific problems are dealt with via a neopositivistic approach which highlights the limitations as well as the possibilities of American research in German literature.

This is a study of Singapore pastors' worldview & understanding of the epidemiology, symptomatology and management of possession behaviour. The pastors' accounts are compared with those from the scientific disciplines, and convergences and divergences noted. Factors shaping both the pastors' and the scientific discourses are examined. The pastors are shown to respond to competing scientific paradigms by reinforcing their two-worlds worldview. They either live mainly in the other world, or in each world at a time, or between the two worlds. Based on theological reflection focusing on epistemology, theodicy & cosmology, the author shows that the paradigm of living in both worlds simultaneously is the most appropriate pastoral response. The theological vision of the coexisting worlds and the pastoral task of unmasking and resisting evil in all its varieties and depths are then discussed.

Studies of the phonology of urban language varieties in the Labovian vein have generally concentrated on structural and statistical differentiation along the "standard"-"non-standard" dimension. In this work the author reports the results of an attempt to apply the relevant methodology and theory to a more complex situation involving the encroachment of an extraneous vernacular on a formerly rural area in England where prestige standard forms are also well represented. The dialectological findings are described in some detail, and innovatory perspectives on various methodological and theoretical issues are developed.

This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations governing wave-like and weakly dissipative flows. The focus of the book is on fundamental methods and standard fluid dynamical problems such as tracer transport, the shallow-water equations, and the Euler equations. The emphasis is on methods appropriate for applications in atmospheric and oceanic science, but these same methods are also well suited for the simulation of wave-like flows in many other scientific and engineering disciplines. The text discusses finite-difference, spectral, finite-element, and finite-volume methods. Also included are additional chapters on semi-Lagrangian schemes, nonreflecting boundary conditions, and methods for the efficient solution of problems that include physically insignificant rapidly propagating waves. Throughout the book the author has followed a middle course between the theorem-proof formalism of a pure mathematics text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. Although there are no formal proofs, the essential characteristics of the various schemes are mathematically derived in a style familiar to physical scientists. Numerical examples illustrating the theoretically derived properties of the various methods are presented throughout the book to establish a concrete link between theory and practice. The diverse forms that stars assume in the course of their lives can all be derives from the initial conditions : the mass and the original chemical composition. In this textbook the basic concepts of stellar structure and the main roads of stellar evolution are described. First, the observable parameters are presented, which are based on the radiation emerging from a stellar atmosphere. Then the bascphysics is described, such as the physics of gases, radiation transport, and nuclear processes, followed by essential aspects of modelling the structure of stars. After a chapter on star formation, the various steps in the evolution of stars are presented. This leads us to brown dwarfs, to the way of star changes into the red-giant state and numerous other stages of evolution and ultimately to the stellar ashes such as white dwarfs, supernovae and neutron stars. Stellar winds, stellar rotation and convection all influence the way a star evolves. The evolution of binary stars is included by using several canonical examples in which interactive processes lead to X-Ray binaries and supernovae of type la. Finally, the consequence of the study of stellar evolution are tied to observed mass ans luminosity functions and to the overall evolution of matter in the universe.

A new thematic theory is demonstrated in this book. Thematic theories and their antecedents (Gruber 1965, Fillmore 1968) are to account for morphosyntactic phenomena (concerning argument structures) whose determining factors are likely to be of a semantic nature/origin. But what is the relevant semantic information ? And how is it to be captured (and formalized)? As is shown by the wide variety of competing current thematic theories, there is no consensus upon these crucial questions. The novel starting-point proposed in this book is the creation of a semantic basis where traditional roles (Agent, Patient, Instrument, etc.) are dispensed with. Instead, a special comparative analysis of morphologically related argument structure versions will provide the relevant semantic information, which makes it possible to associate argument frames with rich internal structures via exact formal calculations. Abstract positions in these internal structures are substituted for thematic roles, in harmony with the spirit of Saussure's structuralism.

Walter Gratzer's themes in the stories he relates in The Undergrowth of Science are collective delusion and human folly. Science is generally seen as a process bound by rigorous rules, which its practitioners must not transgress. Deliberate fraud occasionally intrudes, but it is soon detected, the perpetrators cast out and the course of discovery barely disturbed. Far more interesting are the outbreaks of self-delusion that from time to time afflict upright and competent researchers, and then spread like an epidemic or mass-hysteria through a sober and respectable scientific community. When this happens the rules by which scientists normally govern their working lives are suddenly suspended. Sometimes these episodes are provoked by personal vanity, an unwillingness to acknowledge error or even contemplate the possibility that a hard-won success is a will o' the wisp; at other times they stem from loyalty to a respected and trusted guru, or even from patriotic pride; and, worst of ail, they may be a consequence of a political ideology which imposes its own interpretation on scientists' observations of the natural world. Unreason and credulity supervene, illusory phenomena are described and measured, and theories are developed to explain them - until suddenly, often for no single reason, the bubble bursts, leaving behind it a residue of acrimony, recrimination, embarrassment and ruined reputations. Here, then, are radiations, measured with high precision yet existing only in the minds of those who observed them; the Russian water, which some thought might congeal the oceans: phantom diseases which called for heroic surgery; monkey testis implants that restored the sexual powers of ageing roués and of tired sheep; truths about genetics and about the nature of matter, perceptible only to Aryan scientists in the Third Reich or Marxist ideologues in the Soviet Union; and much more. The Undergrowth of Science explores, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the history of such episodes, up to our own time, in ail their absurdity, tragedy and pathos.

These studies are linked together by a central theme, namely the state of exile created by the Nazi rise to power. Each novel is examined against the socio-political background of the exile scene. Traditional artistic concepts and ideologies, carried over into the new environment, reveal problems of form and content which are treated in detail through individual analysis.
