Political Economy and Fiction in the Early Works of Harriet Martineau

This book examines the early work of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), writer, journalist and woman of letters. She became famous in the 1830s with her Illustrations of Political Economy, a series of 25 short novels popularizing the basic principles of Political Economy. Also discussed are her two shorter series of tales from that period, Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated and Illustrations of Taxation. With these works Martineau took part in an intense debate about the role of economic theory in English society. Drawing on such authorities as Adam Smith Martineau offered her readers the possibility of understanding the impact of the Industrial Revolution and its concomitant changes.

This volume asserts that there was tacit cooperation in the Nazi extermination of the Jewish population of Europe by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Second World War. Although the Allies publicly recognized the Nazi massacre of the Jews in the London Declaration of December 17, 1942, the policies they pursued allowed the genocide to continue. They did so, the author claims, in three ways : (1) refusal to publicly and personally speak about and against the Nazi extermination of the Jews ; (2) refusal to commit even one soldier, one plane, or one warship to any forcible opposition to the "Final Solution" throughout the Second World War ; and (3) obstruction of Jewish escape from Hitler's Europe. This book explores the motivation for the policies Churchill and Roosevelt pursued.

National Heroes and National Identities. Scotland, Norway and Lithuania

This book investigates the concept of the heroic, questions what it is that makes the national hero an indispensable appendage to any possible interpretation of national identity, and asks why scholars stop short before coming to terms with this elusive phenomenon. It finds answers by following heroic traditions in Scotland, Norway and Lithuania from the early modern period to the twentieth century. The book argues that heroic traditions – prevailing trends in situating heroes in national history – owe much to the early modern state. Both national heroes and the nation state had been conceived with a similar moral political mindset that looked for new ways to identify sources for commonality. The confluence of political theory and Realpolitik attested to three classical types of polities, i.e. civitas popularis (democracy), regnum (kingship), and optimatium (aristocracy), as found at that time in Scotland, Norway and Lithuania respectively. The author shows the varied impact these patterns had on heroic traditions. The long record of national heroes in Scotland is explained as a vestige of the legacy of civic humanism, the continuing traditions of the heroic king-lines in Norway are seen as a result of long-standing absolutism, while the belated arrival of national heroes in Lithuania is excused by the country's aristocratic if at times oligarchic past.

Une histoire éditoriale : The Conjure Woman de Charles W. Chesnutt

A la fin du XIXe siècle aux Etats-Unis, la littérature d'écrivains noirs était encore placée sous le signe du soupçon, et ses auteurs demeuraient des exceptions. En publiant son premier recueil de nouvelles en 1899 dans l'une des plus grandes maisons d'édition de l'époque, Charles W Chesnutt allait devenir un pionnier de la littérature noire du XXe siècle. Redécouvert dans les années 1960, méconnu en France, cet auteur figure aujourd'hui parmi les classiques de la littérature des Etats-Unis. Son accès à la publication dans une société profondément discriminatoire, au moment où l'édition américaine se constituait en véritable industrie et voyait se transformer la relation éditeur-auteur, nous pousse à interroger la complexité des relations entre éditeurs blancs et auteurs noirs. Cette histoire particulière éclaire plus largement un pan du développement de l'histoire de l'édition aux Etats-Unis, entre 1880 et 1910. Ancrée dans une double tradition française et anglo-saxonne, cette étude propose de retracer le trajet et la formation de cet écrivain africain-américain depuis son désir d'écriture, sa formation, l'apprentissage d'une profession, jusqu'à la matérialisation de son texte, et la diffusion de son premier livre. Au terme de cette trajectoire, c'est bien le passage par lequel The Conjure Woman devint livre qui se dévoile, révélant les mécanismes de la métamorphose du texte en objet de lecture.

Agnès DERAIL-IMBERT Eros et Arès : les enfants de la guerre dans Billy Budd, Sailor de Melville Cette étude se propose de lire Billy Budd, Sailor comme une fable juridique qui dramatise, dans un double contexte de guerre et de mutinerie, le conflit entre la violence d'une innocence exceptionnelle (Billy) et celle du mal absolu (Claggart). L'une et l'autre, hors la loi, recèle une menace insurrectionnelle que la souveraineté politique (celle du capitaine Vere), pour se maintenir, doit réprimer. Le jugement de Vere - l'exécution de Budd -, s'exerçant au nom de la violence légale, met en oeuvre une stratégie qui enrôle la puissance cohésive d'Eros au service de la loi mar- tiale, dans une opération qui vise à naturaliser et à sublimer la violence arbitraire de l'état d'exception. Against a backdrop of war and mutiny, Billy Budd, Sailor can be read as a juridical drama staging the conflict between the exceptional violence of utmost innocence (Billy's) and that of absolute evil (Claggart's). Both infringe the law and both are pregnant with a threat of insurrection which political sovereignty (captain Vere's) must eradicate for the sake of its own integrity. Vere's sentence condemning Budd to death in the name of legal violence partakes of a complex strategy whose aim is to summon Eros's cohesive power in order to buttress martial law and to naturalize and sublimate the arbitrary violence of the state of exception. Michael GILLESPIE The Picture of Dorian Gray as a Postmodern Work Despite the wide range of interpretative approaches to The Picture of Dorian Gray that have appeared since its publication, all seem to assume that a particular set of values or beliefs-traditional Judeo-Christian morality, cultural attitudes, nationa- list dispositions, or queer inclinations-is integral to Wilde's narrative. This essay challenges the value of any metaphysical reading by asserting that the world of The Picture of Dorian Gray is delineated in strictly physical terms and so is best as a Post-Modern work. Through close reading, this essay shows key points in the narrative that highlight the absence of all values and that underscore the view that characters behave according to strictly material considerations. In the end the essay concludes that Wilde presents a world as grim and bleak as anything found in the works of Samuel Beckett. Malgré les nombreuses interprétations dont a fait l'objet The Picture of Dorian Gray depuis sa publication, tous les critiques semblent penser qu'un ensemble de valeurs ou de croyances-qu'il s'agisse de la morale judéo-chrétienne, de positions culturelles, de dispositions nationalistes ou de l'homosexualité-fait partie inté- grante du roman de Wilde. NASSAAR Hidden Meanings and the Failure of Art : Wilde's A Woman of No Importance Complexity is the hallmark of Oscar Wilde's mature works. From "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" through The Picture of Dorian Gray and Salome, there is an incre- dible amount of complexity wherever we look. When we reach A Woman of No Importance, however, the complexity apparently disappears, and the play is usually read as a conventional Victorian melodrama. A deeper look at the play reveals veiled references to Farquhar, Hawthorne, Arbuthnot and Baudelaire. The refe- rences point to a deep hidden meaning in the play. Traced carefully, they reveal Mrs. Arbuthnot as a deeply corrupt woman who is unaware of the dark recesses of evil within herself. Unfortunately, this suppressed undercurrent of meaning is too dee- ply buried and very difficult to detect, which has led people in general to accept the surface meaning as the true one. The play is thus a stylistic failure, although its veiled thematic content is quite profound. La complexité caractérise les oeuvres d'Oscar Wilde, de "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" jusqu'à The Picture of Dorian Gray et Salome, alors que, dans A Woman of No Importance, celle-ci paraît moins évidente, la pièce étant le plus souvent lue comme un mélodrame victorien conventionnel. Cependant, si on analyse la pièce de plus près, on y décèle des références voilées à Farquhar, Hawthorne, Arbuthnot et Baudelaire. Nathalie SAUDO-WELBY Narratorial authority in Sarah Grand's Beth Book (1897) The Beth Book, a partly autobiographical narrative, is a feminist Bildungsroman told in the third person. Historical, religious and scientifc discourses combine to give authority to the narrator's vision of Beth, so that the narrator is fnally in a position to award Beth the title of female genius. Yet, very little is said of the con- tent of Beth's "art for man's sake ;" the title and the content of her non-fction book are not described ; and the novel's last words are the name of her "Knight, " a writer who believes in woman's genius to reveal man's own. Avoiding the most direct form of didacticism, Sarah Grand has shifted the emphasis away from Beth's message to women to the narrator's work of authorizing Beth to progress to her position of public speaker. In the process, this narrator is given a historical consciousness and a sex. The Beth Book est un roman d'apprentissage féministe au contenu en partie auto- biographique. Pierre LONGUENESSE Yeats et le mélange des genres : du texte à la scène Dans le projet de "théâtre de l'imagination" formulé par Yeats dès 1890, le Verbe poétique est porteur d'un pouvoir visionnaire, par la performativité de son énoncia- tion concrète portée par le corps de ce que l'on n'appelle pas encore, avec Georges Banu, un "acteur-poète" . Ce projet fait de l'écriture dramatique un objet multi- forme, où le drame n'a de sens que mis en tension par ce qui le "menace" dans sa pureté générique : la narration, le chant, la danse. ll conduit le dramaturge vers des collaborations audacieuses sur les scènes de ses créations, entre musiciens, compo- siteurs, et danseurs. En somme, loin de "menacer" son théâtre, ces figures d'un "hors-champ" artistique sont ce qui en constitue l'expression par excellence, puisque, par le théâtre, est dévolu au verbe le pouvoir extra-ordinaire de faire sur- gir, par sa physicalité propre, aussi bien le souffle du chant que le rythme du corps dansant. In the "Theatre of Imagination" conceived by Yeats in the 1890s, the poetic Verb is given the power to create visions through the concrete physicality of its uttering by the performing body of what Georges Banu will later call an "acteur-poète". This project transforms dramatic writing process into the creation of a multiform object, in which the issue of the drama is brought out by the tension between oppo- site mediums : theatre on the one hand, singing, dance, tale on the other hand... This exploration involves Yeats in original collaborations on stage with composers, musicians, and dancers. In short, these manifestations of an artistic "hors-champ, " far from threatening the drama, become on the contrary the core of its expression, as a new power is, on stage, devoted to the Verb : the extra-ordinary power to arise the pneuma of singing as well as the rhythm of the dancing body. Anne MOUNIC "To tell and be told" : war poetry as the "transmission of sympathy" War poetry raises a paradox : the destructive collective imposition which weighed upon each soldier during the Great War triggered off new individual awareness and led to a questioning of the values that had prevailed until then, and notably idealis- tic philosophy. Discussing the paradox, we shall oppose tragedy and the individual epic, catharsis and empathy, the choice of death and the choice of life. The Great War writings will be placed in their literary and philosophical context, before and after. Olivier HERCEND Cinema, the mind and the reader in Virginia Woolf's The Mark On the Wall Taking up David Trotter's Cinema and Modernism, this article emphasises the strong links that exist between Virginia Woolf's thoughts on cinema and the new techniques and notions that she develops in "The Mark on the Wall. " Indeed, her depiction of the mind's process fosters the image of a fragmented world, a succes- sion of images that come under no authoritative order or meaning : a mere mon- tage. But cinema also contains the promise of an artistic answer to the fragmentation of the modern condition. Through a renewal of textual co-operation, Woolf opens her reader to the possibilities of what I choose to call an "aesthetics of juxtaposi- tion. Influencé très tôt par Artaud et Stein, il ne cesse de faire référence au théâtre et conçoit son art comme une réflexion sur la théâtralité et la notion de performance. Ses Europeras, à la fin de sa carrière, permettent de mettre en avant la manière dont il a cherché à la fois à inscrire ses expérimentations artis- tiques dans le champ théâtral tout en faisant sortir le théâtre des codes mêmes de la scène. La place centrale que Cage donne au théâtre, bien qu'il ne produise que de très rares oeuvres théâtrales, témoigne de son désir de penser le théâtre non pas en tant que médium mais en tant que lieu d'expérimentation. This article addresses John Cage's ambiguous relationship with theatre throughout his career. Influenced early by Artaud and Stein, he often referred to theatre and understood his own art project as a reflection on theatricality and performance. The Europeras, written late in his career, testify to his attempt to associate his artistic experimentation with theater while pushing on the limits of theatre. The prominent position Cage gave to the theatre in contrast to the rarity of his theatrical work pieces is emblematic of his ambition to re-think the theatre as a locus of experimentation.

Jacques Offenbach was not only a composer of inexhaustible imagination, but also a virtuoso cellist. Even after his first years in Paris, he liked to perform as a musician again and again. To mark his 200th birthday in 2019, the Offenbach Edition Keck OEK publishes original compositions by the 'Mozart of the Champs-Elysées' for 'his' instrument plus piano accompaniment. This collection of 12 essays offers detailed and varied studies of the unique problematic construction of contemporary identities from a literary and cultural perspective. The Painful Chrysalis covers transcendental, relevant and polemic topics like the difficulty of growing up, classist and interracial struggles, narratives of displacement and exile, queering the world, power politics and the individual, troubling poetics of the self, politically contesting documentaries, or boredom and male anorexia. It ranges from British authors of very different origin (such as David Lodge, Radclyffe Hall, Paul Golding, Zadie Smith or Abdulrazak Gurnah) to Canadian and American women writers (such as P.K. Defaced! Money, Conflict, Protest

This fully illustrated catalogue is the first of its kind to examine the relationship between money, power, resistance and dissent. It accompanies major exhibitions at The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. War, revolution and protest are defining themes in all periods of world history, shaping national identities and influencing material and visual culture in myriad ways. The ubiquity of money makes it a powerful vehicle for diseminating the messages of the state to the public, but the symbolic and nationalistic iconography of currency could also be subverted or mutilated in powerful acts of defiance, rebellion and propaganda. Beginning in Britain in the wake of the American and French Revolutions, the exhibition explores the political and social tensions present in society, and communicated through the production or defacement of money, over the past 200 years. It contrasts the use of money by the radicals of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, such as Thomas Spence, and the Suffragette movement, with the money produced by European empires as they scrambled to dominate the rest of the world. The currency histories of the two World Wars reveal the subversion of the very nature of what money is, and highlight the role of money as the tool of occupation, imprisonment, resistance and remembrance. The coins countermarked during the Troubles in Northern Ireland hint at the polarised nature of political discourse and sectarian violence. The exhibition culminates with the work of contemporary artists and activists who use money to highlight the challenges of the modern world, both locally and globally - as a canvas, as a raw material, or as a powerful means of communication. From a unique coin commemorating the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 to a Syrian banknote refashioned to raise awareness of the refugee crisis, this publication showcases many newly acquired objects from the Fitzwilliam Museum collection, alongside materials from the Archive of Modern Conflict. These objects are enhanced by a number of important loans from museums and private collections, including the cannon used at the Battle of Mafeking, an exploded transit van and contemporary art works that take money, its authority and destruction as their theme. Each object constitutes a witness statement to its time and its conflict, and each section has its own story to tell. The chapters - by archaeologists, historians, curators, and artists - create a rich context for the more than 130 objects in the catalogue, most of which have never been studied in depth or published before.

Rock and Ritual

This book is the outcome of the analysis and discussion of the links between ritual practices and some natural spaces, particularly caves, but also rockshelters and stones. The articles gathered in this volume show very diverse contexts and researches, mainly from Bronze Age to Roman times. They offer new perspectives about religious landscapes as well as the role of these spaces in territorial organisation. Several contributions try to reconstruct ritual movements, regulated religious itineraries and social practices, whereas others focus on the circulation inside caves and rockshelters, considering the multi-sensoriality of these natural spaces, linked also with the material offerings. Rock & Ritual volume is another evidence of the complexity and variability of ritual practices linked to natural spaces.

Ce rare double portrait en pied vient seulement d'être attribué à Titien après avoir entrepris des analyses et une restauration minutieuses qui révèlent une belle peinture au style "non finito" avec de superbes touches d'empâtement totalement typiques au maître. Tout ceci est illustré et développé dans ce nouveau livre. Titian provided portraits for the greatest men and women of Europe, Charles V and Philip II of Spain primary among them. For years the Klesch portrait was dismissed as a workshop product - partly because poor condition hid its true quality, but also because it was not believed that Titian could have deigned to create one for Guidobaldo, whose father Guidobaldo della Rovere (1514-1574) and family had a long history of patronizing the artist. Recent research, however, has thrown Guidobaldo's geopolitical significance into relief. He was supreme commander of Venice, the Papal States and then Spain. He sent thousands of soldiers to the major conflicts of his day, particularly the defense of Malta (1565) and the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and his engineers were sought throughout Europe for their ingenuity. In this volume full of new research, Ian Verstegen reveals that Guidobaldo was not peripheral but central to Italian politics and was regarded at several points in history as a key figure who could bring peace or who could influence major conflicts on the Italian peninsula, particularly the War of Siena, and then Pope Paul IV's offensive war against Spain. Anne-Marie Eze gives the first comprehensive examination of the painting's provenance, outlining the portrait's vicissitudes and reception at different moments in its near 500-year history, reexamining received wisdom about its past ownership, and presenting new documentary evidence to expand on and fill gaps in our knowledge of its whereabouts. Finally, Matthew Hayes and Ian Kennedy reflect on the technique, date, recent conservation, and authorship of the painting, proving it to be a masterpiece that only the great Titian could have created.

«Phädon», or «On the Immortality of the Soul»

This is the first modern translation of Moses Mendelssohn's classic work of 1767, the Phädon. It includes Mendelssohn's own introduction and appendix, as well as footnotes and explanatory introduction by David Shavin. (Charles Cullen's translation of 1789 is the only other extant translation.) The "modern Socrates" of the German classical period, Mendelssohn has created a beautiful translation and elaboration of Plato's Phädo led to a revolution in thought, and a subsequent renaissance in Germany. The debt of the German classical period to ancient Greece is embodied in Mendelssohn's Phädon, as is the promise of the American Revolution. Lydia, lying between the Aegean coast and the Anatolian plateau, has been associated since Antiquity with the Pactolus river, which carried gold from the Tmolus mountain, and with the wealth of Croesus. Populated by Lydians and Maeonians, and marked by the presence of Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, it has attracted the attention of researchers since the end of the 18th century. This book aims to cover the chronology of Lydian studies from the protohistoric period to the beginning of the Byzantine period and to bring together the contributions of international researchers and scholars from a wide range of disciplines that includes history, archeology, epigraphy, and numismatics, and from different perspectives. The various studies discuss society, social structures, military aspects, economy, religion, arts, architecture, and material culture. Seeing loud. Basquiat and music

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, New York City was financially and socially bankrupt, but the art and music scene was flourishing. During these years, the downtown New York music scene - no wave, hip-hop, disco funk and club culture - shaped Jean-Michel Basquiat as both a musician and an artist. This catalog for a traveling exhibition explores how Basquiat's painting has parallels in his music (sampling, cut-up, rapping), and takes a new look at his production as a writer and a poet in light of his connections with the then-emerging hip-hop culture. This beautifully illustrated exhibition catalog of rarely seen photographs and images sheds new light on Basquiat as a musician, exploring how his art and music are related, and how they reflect on his identity as a Black artist in the United States, the downtown New York music scene, and contemporary culture.
